Hello BOMP!ers. This week, 2 of the requests I received (out of 3) were
for a repeat play of Circus Maximus' "Wind" and Chicago's "Lowdown" (from
somebody who's been listening to C & S from just about jump street. Oh
well...). An unusual week indeed with several disjointed sets, missed
segues, etc.
I had some trouble hooking up to WFMU on WMFO's terminal after my
broadcast, so I missed Evan Davies' return to New York's airwaves.
We're signing up for our shows this week. While it's highly unlikely
that C & S will be moved, replaced or forced to alternate weeks, it's quite
likely that the broadcast will be shortened to 2 hours (from 7-9am (EST)) to
accomodate increased demand for air time from the (Tufts University) student
population. No biggie, makes the broadcast more manageable, I.M.O. Your
support nonetheless is appreciated...

I have seen "Hard Rock Zombies" and it is indeed an
absolute piece of crap. I actually saw it in a
theatre
in 1985 and the movie was just so bad it wasn't funny.
Horrible songs, lousy photography, lousy acting,
incredibly lame attempts at satire, even lamer
attempts at horror...I walked out before it was over.
The movie also felt like it ran on forever. I
remember walking out at about the 90 minute point and
it still wasn't over. It played for only a week and
it was gone. I even remember ads for it being run on
TV, but it still bombed pretty badly....and deservedly
so. If you ever see this film in the video shelves,
run as hard as you can in the opposite direction.

'Sos' isn't a word I know, but it's probably "sus" which I thought meant
"their" but probably is the formal version of "your." Now if carino is
actually spelled "caNino," I think that's Spanish for "Canine," so it's
obviously a "Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf" reference.

There was a record collector one of the Mexican culture newsgroups who
would go on at length about Orfeon A Go Go and Mexican bands, but like

Carino, with a ~ over the n, means affection or fondness, according to the
Spanish-English dictionary in the back of my Webster's Unabridged.

>Unlike the famous 60's amp, most Vox guitars were sort of junky

I dunno, an acquaintance who was a huge vox collector (and NOT a garage
fan!) had nothing but bad things to say about the post-SuperBeatle vox
amp product. but then again, I once lifted up the cutest little vox amp
I ever saw and he flipped, explaining, there are only 5 in exsitance and
that's worth over $4000. collectors! he did have like 15 early vox
amps though, so stopping by his place was like going to a showroom.

>I'm so cool, I didn't even have central a/c in New
>Orleans. ;-) Just window units, and just in the
>bedrooms. Ceiling fans downstairs.
>I'd go w/out a/c before I'd go without heat

While I have never been, when my girlfriend was in New Orleans this
summer the "heat index" was 118 degrees F (just to explain a little to
the Europeans). A co worker from Biloxi, MS told me he was happy not to
need his Roach Hammer up here. (roach hammer? how big are the roaches
down there?)

CD storage:
I recently topped 800 cds (damn CDR trading- I'm still waiting on 30 cds
in trades to come in). I'm very close to moving to a photo-album-type
system, at some point it gets to be a problem to fit in all the jewel
cases. If anyone has an ingenious system to deal with large amounts of
CDs let me know.

In case of death:
 >Donate them to a sound recording archive or cool non-profit radio
station?

My current plan is to ask my sister to sell the collectibles and donate
the commons to the radio station I worked at. I heartily suggest people
make attempts to strike deals with Research Museums like MoMA, or maybe
the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (or experience music project) and even
more important than the records, donate all your printed matter like
fliers, zines, letters, etc. I am most happy to have a large collection
of letters from minor bands in the 80s/90s, many of which detail their
label dealings, management, what musicians showed up at shows of theirs,
etc- very cool stuff if you could imagine finding it for 60s garage
bands today. You should set up a written deal with the museums first.
I forget, unfortunately you only get to take a portion of the value off
your taxes, which is an annoying law, but what can you do.

I really, really hope that those of you with labels who ever need to
clean out your files separate out any cool correspondence & fliers and
mail that off to some place that will keep it for 50 years.

>I'd be very curious to hear what you think are the best records to hear
while stoned

I have never been stoned, what's it like? Is it like being drunk? I
have often-repeated this story. a friend was tripping and looked at me,
"Dude," he exclaimed, "you look like you're BREATHING." Well, I would
hope I was.

Did anybody else forget the superbowl was today? I talked to a
supermarket clerk this morning and made the somewhat unpardonable male
gaff of not knowing the Rams left Los Angeles a few years ago. So I
have to go do something macho to make up for not paying any attention to
sports.

Subject: richmond jazz fest 65? & tv & video questions

No really, I really wasn't born until 1968, but yes I know about this.

I always thought Batman was the first show to be on twice a week, but I
heard about Shindig doing this too, because I think the Shindig Live
from London special was their new fall season show done split into 2
episodes shown on the same week in Sept/Oct (non-video-collectors will
still recognize this as the Who "Live From Richmond" material- I
think). and I thougth they ended the episode by saying something like,
"In two days catch the next part of Shindig live from london with the
Who."

Which actually brings me to another question. You can almost always
find footage of british bands playing in a club with a
horizintally-striped piece of cloth behind the band. What club was
that? I heard it was the Marquee Club in London(?) but heck if I know
because... that Who footage is (I think, it's not in front of me) also
in front of that same cloth tent thing, which would make me think it's
the Richmond Jazz Festival (and then perhaps actually in a large tent).
But I have some color footage of the Animals in the same situation, and
that looks like it was 1 or 2 years earlier than the who (64 instead of
66).

So which location is it and was this shown in the UK as well? where the
richmond jazz festivals broadcast anywhere or made into films like the
NME Pollwinners?

And what's the deal with this "Small Faces Movie" called 'Dateline
Diamonds?' I was told the Small Faces actually act in it, but that
seems unlikely. and does anyone have copies of the Dutch beat films
like "Beat It" (1966)? Anyone know any Brazilian film collectors who
could talk about the Brazilian teenage rock music movies? A big
Uruguayan film collector (this internet is so esoteric) told me that
none exist because of military repression at the time, but another
person gave me titles in portuguese. anyone? I fear one of these rock
movies was a brazilian TV movie, which doesn't bode well for finding it
anywhere since the trendy TV Globo in Brazil went out of business in
like 1969 & their film library was sold in lots- according to this dude
at the national archives of Brazil. Anyone have info on "tv movies"
made about bands in UK/Europe/Asia/Latin America? I know Mutantes and
other brazilian Psyche bands recorded tv commercials and I've seen like
a 5 second clip of one of them for Shell Oil, anyone know about other
non-US bands recording TV commercials in the 1960s? Am I getting cabin
fever after all this snow? Should I calm down now?

Not much chance there. Saw them a bunch of times when they reformed a couple

there's very little chance of some members speaking again (let alone

Subject: RE: richmond jazz fest 65? & tv & video questions

My tuppence worth regarding this info: (another lurker speaks.....)
I've seen the vertically (?) striped black and white cloth behind the
Experience and the Who (doing 'So Sad About Us' and, I think, a badly-mixed
version of 'My Generation' (very quiet Pete unfortunately) on a real bad
documentary about the Marquee (Introduced by a very 80s looking Dave Dee I
seem to recall.). Some friends and I were recently discussing this footage.
(It turns up on UK music shows at fairly frequent intervals-speaking
relative to cool clips generally and not in proportion with the shameful
amount of shit that pumps out the ol' cathode-ray masquerading as music.)
The sound on all three clips is weird in some aspect on each one. (e.g.- No
fuzzbox when the Experience do "Purple Haze". Did Jimi leave it at the last
gig or has some TV guy gone "Too loud!" ?)
Re: the potential Richmond reference. (This being filmed is mentioned in at
least three of the Who tomes I own.....). The footage of the Who doin'
"Shake'n'Shimmy" in The Kids are Alright (Am I getting confused here ? Back
me up someone!) is from this festival and very fine indeed. (Not least of
all for seeing Pete, so moved by the emotion and excitement, just give up
playing and shimmy away!!)
A little vague. Sorry. Haven't watched any of these vids for a while now.

And what's the deal with this "Small Faces Movie" called 'Dateline
Diamonds?' I was told the Small Faces actually act in it, but that
seems unlikely.
Anyone have info on "tv movies"
made about bands in UK/Europe/Asia/Latin America.
Don't think the Small Faces act in it, but only heard reports about this
one. I do know their "Ogden's..." era TV special which featured the "Song of
a Baker" recently unearthed for a BBC "Sounds of the Sixties" strand. Lots
of embarrassed miming.....
Not strictly TV movie question, but do any UK-Bompers (or anywhere, I'm just
being lazy regarding conversions) have or know either, 'Death May Be You
Santa Claus' (feat. John and Yoko, the Second Hand et al.) or, 'Better A
Widow' (with the awesome 'Mike Stuart Span', (I never tire of hearing these
guys!) as referred to in their Tenth Planet comp liner notes (cool pic-but a
mite nippy!). I would love to even just hear a little more about these.
Whilst I'm here....anyone else got a favourite obscure track surfacing in a
movie soundtrack moment ? I remember the Pretties gracing a Richard
O'Sullivan (?) (Man About the House guy) cheapy horror flick (early 70s) at
a groovy party with, if memory serves correct.. "I See You".
Go-go.

Hi-
And thank you for your interest in appearing at CAVESTOMP! The dates are May
12 & 13 in NYC. I'll not burden you with our budget constraints, but I will
tell you that coming from The UK, though we are not able to even cover your
expenses to do a show like this, CAVESTOMP! offers the same mayhem, goodtime,
and overall insanity as the Grind. (I use them as an example only because
you've done The Grind and therefore know what I'm drawing a comparison to.)
Though our headliners have yet to be confirmed, I assure you this will be an
"event!" In addition, we record our shows on 32 tracks of ADAT and release
highlights of each CAVESTOMP! on CD. Let me know the absolute least amount
of $ you need to do a show like this and I'll visit your site, do some
checking, and see what our budget will allow. Again, I appreciate your
interest and just want to be straight with you from out of the gate as to
what we can & can't do. Your thoughts?
- -Jon

Yeah, Mo at Cavestomp would be killer. She is always great live. I also
like Bill's idea of asking the Bongos. Richard is a friend of mine and he'd
probably love to do it.
