I always took that to mean it was the Marquee as well, and the new-ish book
"London Live" supports that. That was The Marquee's photo calling card.
There was a striped awning at the Richmod Jazz Festival, but I'm not
certain that there was any connection between it and The Marquee. Although
I think "London Live" may have also mentioned a connection between the
Marquee ownership and a national Jazz organization, which was responsible
for the RJF. I'll double check the book.

GoGo asked:
"And what's the deal with this "Small Faces Movie" called 'Dateline
Diamonds?'>And what's the deal with this "Small Faces Movie" called 'Dateline
>Diamonds?'

Quoting from the "Room For Ravers" website:

	http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/Martin_Payne/

The Small Faces appeared in a film in 1965 called Dateline Diamonds. What
does anybody know about it?

Christopher Dolmetsch and Kent Benjamin help out.

This was a low budget spy thriller released about October 1965. The Small
Faces appeared in a club scene in the original line. The Small Faces
perform I Got Mine. It's not live, but they did record an additional song,
apparently, for the film, a version of Don't Stop What You're Doing with
Jimmy Winston vocals. This was included on the French EP for What'Cha Gonna
Do About It . It was omitted from the 1996 CD reissues with French EP
tracks, allegedly because one of the band didn't particularly care to
include bonus Jimmy Winston tracks.

I ever saw and he flipped, explaining, there are only 5 in exsitance and
that's worth over $4000. collectors! he did have like 15 early vox
amps though, so stopping by his place was like going to a showroom."

hmmm did he have a vox "gyrotone" ? it was a small rotary speaker cabinet
similar to a simple leslie cab. dates around '65 i would say. i've only ever
seen oneofem. possibly a prototype or trial or something, since there
definitely weren't many made.

then someons said:

"Which actually brings me to another question. You can almost always
find footage of british bands playing in a club with a
horizintally-striped piece of cloth behind the band. What club was
that? I heard it was the Marquee Club in London(?) but heck if I know
because... that Who footage is (I think, it's not in front of me) also
in front of that same cloth tent thing, which would make me think it's
the Richmond Jazz Festival (and then perhaps actually in a large tent).
But I have some color footage of the Animals in the same situation, and
that looks like it was 1 or 2 years earlier than the who (64 instead of
66)."

ISTR this is indeed the old marquee club in wardour st london w1. that
striped hoarding thing was there for years and years. it was actually made
up to look like a tent .... marquee ... geddit! the venue was used by german
t.v. ("beat club"), among others, in the mid-late 60s for band sessions.
ythere is a famous session featuring the who and hendrix for example from
around march 67, introduced by dave lee travis. don't go looking for the
venue now, though, since it closed in the late 80s and was demolished. that
space is now an expense-account eaterie called "mezzo". bet your feet don't
stick to the floor there like they used to in the marquee. <g>

Subject: NW 60s Loose Ends

Before I move on to The Redcoats, let's tie up some loose ends from the
last post. (that's code for I gotta dig thru my shit) I want to make it
real clear that going to NW teen clubs in the 60s was NOT an
underground movement but was kind of a high school ritual, with
different clubs being dominated by the schools that were in closest
proximity. The Headless Horseman was mostly kids from Wilson High (where
I went), Lincoln High, & Cleveland from just across the river. It was
owned by Mr. Matlack who had kids there (Cleveland). The local stars
were looked upon as just as good or better than most national acts of
the day. The success of The Raiders added legitimacy to this feeling.
There was a whole string of 2nd tier bands like The Bards who played on
the undercards at the Armories and bigger venues. This was true at the
Sonics show I attended. Although the undercards of the Wailers & Sonics
shows run together in my memory (due to the fact that they were both at
the PSU Ballroom & the fact that even in those days I liked to drink
beer) I can tell you with a degree of certainty that early Portland
Psych band The Warloks were present at one of these shows.
SOP for us was to start early (after school), find a wino to buy us a
couple 8-packs of 8oz Country Clubs and duck down the loading entrance
on the side of the Portland Art Museum in the Park Blocks which run
north-south thru the city and right down the center of he PSU campus and
get lit. From there we would head south about 6 or 7 blocks to the
Horseman, or across the street to PSU.
And this was just what we did the night of the Sonics show. I think they
had two supporting acts, and played about an hour. I'd have to look at a
time line, but I think they had just released You Got Your Head On
Backwards Baby and were touring to support it, so I'm pretty sure they
played that. I do remember hearing The Witch, Psycho, I'm A Man & some
covers. I think the thing that struck me about them is they were real
clean cut looking in matching collarless jackets ( kind of early 60s NW
look) and the guy that looked like the front man (sax player Rob Lind)
did little or no lead vocals.
Gotta go, but I'll add that the Fanz Only LP has 6 songs, 3 from Salem
66 & 3 from the Seattle
reunion show (the 2 common ones + Lucille which is STUNNING. Bob

Re the old-middle-new school arguement. CAVESTOMP! attempts to put shows
together you don't normally get a chance to see. As good as some of the
current bands out there are, they are out there touring on a pretty regular
basis. (And we do invite a good number of them who do wind up on the bill
anyway.) On the other hand, "legends" like "?", The Monks, Standells, and
Remains, hadn't played in decades before they played CAVESTOMP! So no
offence to any of the current keepers of the flame, but before it's too late,
let's experience some of the bands that inspired us to pick up guitars in the
first place!

Another fine week, another fine show...

Not a lot of totally new stuff this week -- primarily the domestic reissue
of Fifty Foot Combo's CD (Belgian surf, courtesy of MuSick) and some more
loud and impolite items (a Wailers demo, and more crazy stuff from the
"Wolf Call" Golden Crest vault raid) from the good folks at Norton.

As always, many thanks to the artists and labels responsible for producing
tonight's music, and to the loyal listeners who encourage us to air it
every week!

(For over five years now, Radio Rumpus Room has been broadcast Fridays at
9-10:30 p.m. on KFAI Fresh Air Radio, FM 90.3 Minneapolis and 106.7 St.
Paul. The show also streams live in RealAudio, and as always, our last
three shows are archived in their entirety -- also in RealAudio. YOU CAN
HEAR THIS SHOW RIGHT NOW -- just head for the Radio Rumpus Room webpage
for all the ear-poppin' goods!)

Here's what went down in the Radio Rumpus Room on Friday, January 21, 2000:

SAVVY SHOW STARTER (ALWAYS LOCALLY RECORDED!)
Replacements -- Buck Hill (Hootenanny; Twin/Tone)

As everyone knows, in the Twin Cities we don't have much of a surf, we have
little ski hills. The Replacements recorded this instro ode to the local
"Buck Hill" back in '83, for their second LP, "Hootenanny."

Lavenders -- White Lightnin' Effin (Cuca Records Rock 'n' Roll Story; Classics)
Volcanos -- Bad News (Takin' Out the Trash: A Tribute to the Trashmen;
Double Crown)
Trashmen -- Bird Dance Beat (Live Bird '65-'67; Sundazed)
Wade Curtis and the Rhythm Rockers -- Puddy Cat (Mama-Meow-Mow) (7-inch;
Norton)

Richie Valens -- Ooh! My Head (Rockin' All Night; Del-Fi)
Chavez & Chaney -- Fine Little Girl (Rare L.A. Tracks; Bacchus
Archives/Dionysus)
Wailers -- Dirty Robber (Unissued 1958 Demos 7"; Norton)
Rockets -- Moovin' 'N' Groovin' (Wild Rock & Roll Instrumentals; Collector)
Gino -- Hand Clappin' Time (Wolf Call!: Tall Cool Ones From the Vaults of
Golden Crest; Norton)

Curtis Hobock -- Tom Dooley Rock & Roll (7-inch; Dee-Jay Jamboree)
Freakwater -- Good for Nothing (End Time; Thrill Jockey)
Volebeats -- Tequila Y Bunuelos (Ain't No Joke; Gadfly)
Supersuckers with Steve Earle -- Before They Make Me Run (The Greatest Rock
and Roll Band in the World; Sub Pop)

Bob Dylan -- Visions of Johanna (Blonde on Blonde; Columbia)
White Lightning -- Coming Down (Strikes Twice 1968-1969; Arf! Arf!)
Mickey Newbury -- Just Dropped in (Nights When I am Sane; Winter Harvest)

Miracle Workers -- I'm Hung Up (Moxies Revenge; Get Hip)
Answers -- I'll Be In (Teen Jangler Blowout; Teenage Shutdown)
Luv'd Ones -- Up Down Sue (Truth Gotta Stand; Sundazed)
Flamin' Groovies -- Between the Lines (Now; Sire)

Fifty Foot Combo -- Dimitrius (Go Hunting; MuSick)
Pollo Del Mar -- South of the Border (The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea; MuSick)

And that was that -- next week, "Dance CRAZE!" (If your eyes don't pop out
when you say "CRAZE!" you're saying it wrong!)

a lot of good authentic '60s footage to make up for it. Plus, they made up

Don,

According to the CD liner notes from their "Kaleidoscopic Compendium "
collection, a guy by the name of Marvin Lagenoff managed them in their
early days. However, just right before the time they signed with Mercury
Records it appears that Bob Wyld and Art Polhemus took over both
production and management duties for the boys.

Yeah, I'm not big on Pinball Wizard either. To me the highlights are "I
Can't Explain," "Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere," "Substitute," "I'm a Boy," "A
Legal Matter," "My Generation," "Pictures of Lily," "The Kids Are Alright,"
"Happy Jack" and "I Can See For Miles," all UK hits from 1965-67.

Not seeing concerts but what got me into garage was listening to the
Sire 2-LP Nuggets while coming down from what, at that point, was the most
harrowing acid trip I'd ever had. I remember thinking that this was
the most perfect music outside of the blues. I still remember hearing the
opening tone of I Had Too Much To Dream move from one speaker across the
room to the other and thinking that the song must have been created with
my exact situation in mind.

the two lps that followed are great as well "a quick one" and "sell-out".
after that townshend begins to take it deathly seriously and the
bell-bottoms show up. but for snotty mod stuff their first 3 are the
essential ones. tom.

oh i very much agree. i think that my statement over
the original sins is the fact that i prefer the work
brother jt has done since the sins. maybe a bit
weirder but more consistant. i do love the original
sins, but some of their work to me is not up to the
level i think could have been achieved. hell, the
sins were one of the first contempory type garage
bands i first discovered when i started doing collage
radio in montana in the early 90's. not even
attaching them to any "garage" class, i just liked
them. pretty much that still hold true for the music
i like and listen to now. so for that, i think mo
tucker would be fantastic to see. how about with jad
fair? and then there is also lothar and the hand
people, the fugs, the godz, the troggs, and/or pere
ubu. just something to trip past the doormat.

for some reason i have always loved "the seeker". i
know the lyrics are a bit cheezy, but the riff is
fantastic. absolutely townsend. my real problem with
the song is the production. not really up to the who
sound. almost as if it was a throw away song.
by the way, the quadrajets do a reved up cover of the
song. production there sounds like shit as well. but
then again, it is the quadrajets.

in my opinion, it's an essential for all record collections.

While I like the most recent Bro. JT stuff, the O. Sins stuff is way more
up my alley. I'll admit that I don't think they did a truly *great* record
after _Move_, but even after that most were damn good (with _Bethlehem_
being my favorite of the later recordings).

I guess I'd say that if you gave me a choice of listening to The Original
Sins thru '91 or '92 and compared it to anything JT has put out on his own,
I'd jump right to the O Sins material. That's not knocking Brother JT, just
saying that it's not as much my style.

In regards to Cavestomp, I believe getting The Original Sins (and I mean
JT, Ken Bussiere, Dan McKinney, and Dave Ferrara, tho' I'd be perfectly
happy with Seth Baer on drums, too) would make far more sense. The O. Sins
fit the 'Stomp vibe where I don't really think Brother JT does.

One man's opinion,

Blair

Jon,

I absolutely luv the Bongos, but I sorta agree that they ain't quite
Cavestompish in terms of their sound or approach to the music. Would be
better suited to a Popstomp where the likes of Let's Active, Game Theory,
20/20, the Beat, the Db's and the Romantics could re-live the halcyon days
of 80's power pop.

Nah, for the middle-school, Cavestomp needs acts like the Not Quite, early
Plan 9, Stomachmouths, Miracle workers, Gruesomes, etc.. But the Slickee
Boys might work well.

Was I dreaming or did I just see a Farfisa Combo Compact (grey) being
played by the band backing William Shatner in a Priceline.com commercial?
(Not sure if it's in all of 'em, but in the one with "We Gotta Get Out Of
