Big Beat released a two volume set entitled "The Major Bill Story" about
12-15 years ago. The albums were co-ordinated by Alec Palao before he
headed out west. Volume #1 is dedicated to Larry & The Blue Notes and
includes different versions of "Night of The Sadist" whereas #2 comprises of
various teen combos from the Charay label. The second volume also includes
a great version of Them's "Little Girl" performed by The Elite. I have both
albums and would be happy to tape 'em if anyone is desperate for this stuff.
Send a blank C:90 etc.

I assume that you're Swedish and therefore you should buy the book "Stora Popboken" by Hans Olofsson. There you'll find all the information that you need to know about Annabee-Nox and Swedish 60's music. Check out the story about the misunderstood singer Carlo Lind who did a sexchange operation and thereafter refused to leave his apartment.

BOOK THESE GUYS FOR CAVESTOMP!!!!

The Gruesomes were the equal of ANY of the garage bands from the 80's scene.
You have your Fuzztones, Chesterfield Kings, Cynics...
I'll take these guys anyday. I'm not saying that I don't like the other
groups (I do), but the Gruesomes really ARE/WERE a true teenage garage band.
There weren't any groups with members under 18 that could come close to the
enthusiasm and energy blasted about on stage. I haven't seen another group
since even come close. The Gruesomes were woefully unappreciated here - many
don't know they made 3 LP's in the late '80's.

Mop Top Mike

>>>Hey everyone!
>For any followers of the Tyrants of Teen Trash...here's some news!
The GRUESOMES will be playing their first show in something like 10 years in
Toronto at the Horseshoe Tavern on March 4th. It's kind of a strange night,
the gig is part of the horrid Canadian Music Week so there are 4 other bands
playing but the Gruesomes will be closing the night and playing for 2 hours!
  Yippeee!

In a 1971 edition of NME there's an article on the Vox Discotape, with a
great picture of a very hairy guy using one. "How You Can Be The Whole
Show: More and more entertainers are going into the private deejay
business, in which you can offer yourself and your turntables to a
function, taking along the records and getting the dancing going. Now Vox
bring out a new console which combines record reproduction with tapes,
called the Vox Discotape, which is offered in easily assembled kit form at
£250. It comprises two Garrard SP25 Mk III turntables, with cue and pause
facilities, Shure M3D magnetic cartridges and diamond stylii. Also, a tape
cassette unit which can be used taping records, such as old 78s, and
playing tapes as well as records during the evening. The mixing controls
are sliders and each channel is monitored by headphones and volume level
metre, eliminating any loud blasts. The amplifier delivers 50W rms into an
8 ohm load. Finished in leather cloth, in blue, red or white, the whole
packs away neatly for easy transportation." Despite spending my life in
thrift stores and second hand markets I've never ever seen one...

Do you know how I might buy a copy of this book from the United States? I'm
trying to learn Swedish, and I have a copy of the 2-CD set by the same name.
Having the book would give me some Swedish that I'd want to read and
practice much more than the school books that I've got.

I saw the ad for the book in the CD box, but since the guy here in the
States who sold me the CD couldn't get the book, I thought I wouldn't be
able to find it.

Is there somewhere on the web that I can order it with a credit card and
have it sent to me here, or maybe another way?

Thanks.

Running late & gotta go to work so this is gonna be fairly short. Most
people around these parts are unaware that The Headless Horseman still
sits at 626 SW Park Ave in downtown Portland 90% intact. It's now a
bistro called The Brasserie Montmarte and still has the great oak bar,
split level hardwood dance floors, & the little stage sticking out into
thin air above the lower floor. Me and the local dickheads used to lean
on the rail and watch Fred Cole of The Weeds toss his tambourine into
the air hoping he'd miss and it'd crack some luckless bastard on the
head dancing below. Never happed, tho.
This is a must-see for visiting garage-niks & stop #1 on Bob's Portland
Garage Tour. Some good reading on this era can be found in a book called
Dance Halls Armories and Teen Fairs by Don Rodgers which can be turned
up easily by using a book search service like http://www. Amazon.com.
The Norton Records reissues liner notes are also a must-read.
And lastly does anybody out there have any Redcoats or Red Coats 45's on
Dunhill? The only song title I'm sure of is 'Where Do We Go From Here'
from 66. Got lots to trade or $$$.
Once had a copy in my hand but drummer Pat Primiano (struggling hard)
ripped it back out saying it was the only one he had. And I don't think
I've ever gotten over that, which is probably why I usually keep a beer
can in that hand. Bob

Subject: garage perspective

actually I think the idea of having no exposure to top 40 60s sounds and
walking into garage probably gives someone a fresher perspective on song
construction than someone who has all the top 40 major label stuff
drilled into their heads. I was a big fan of oldies radio in the 80s
but I went from buying strictly punk records in 82-85 to buying punk and
60s garage records. I didn't have money to spend on stuff I could hear
on the radio. And in some senses, is having the Shadows catalog as
interesting as having the reissued comps, did they make music that is
better appreciated in the 1990s or for the 1960s?

I am surprised though, that there were plenty of neo-garage bands in the
late 80s/early 90s who only listened to 80s bands like the Chesterfield
Kings and maybe had one or two pebbles records. And I'm not naming
names... but there was one band that I talked to and I gave them a tape
of the first 2 back to the grave lps and they were like, ehh, it's
crude, but the the milkshakes did it better.

version of "The Gambler" by Roky Erickson out there on
any bootlegs?! (More flames!)

Does anyone have the background to the studio musicians or possible group that provided the tunes for the Beagles and BS's.

I do know that Barry White contributed on at least one song. I'd heard that
way back in the late 70s, so my sister still had some singles she'd saved,
and I looked. One song had B. White listed as the songwriter. We listened to
it, and it was very definitely his deep voice singing, too. Don't remember
what song it was, now, and the records, I think, are long gone.

Subject: Intro: Where can I find a Vox Organ?

Greetings,

I should introduce myself on this list. My name is
Melvin Little, and I'm a lover of punk rock/new wave/
gothic/sixties and modern garage rock/post punk/60s
British beat/50 rock n roll. I collect constantly,
and I'm always in search of good shows and wonderful
radio stations in my travels. Eventhough it's a
mainstream dance club, I'm an 80s DJay. Admist the
junk that existed in the Reagan era, I also put
in my mix of oddities that these young kids aren't
exposed to enough. I would and could play anything
from the Lyres to Joy Division in an evening. Some
people inquire about my music. That's gratifying.
If anyone on this list happens to be in Raleigh, NC
on a Wednesday evening, I work at the Five-O Cafe
on Hillsborough Street, across the street from
North Carolina State University (NCSU).

I'm thinking about forming a garage band. There's
a friend and myself that's interested in doing the
same kind of low tech minimalist material that's
found in "Pebbles", "Beyond the Calico Wall", the
more obscure tracks of "Nuggets", and "Battle of the
Garage Bands Part I and II." What I'm in dire need
of would be some Vox equipment. I am interested in
findng a Vox Continental Organ in mint condition,
with a Vox amp. I have a synthesizer, but I want
to be authenic as possible. If anyone can help me
out, I would appreciate it.

Here a laundry list of my favorite bands from the
various eras:

The 1950s:
Bo Didley

The 1960s:
Most of the British invasion bands of the mid 1960s,
garage psychedelic rock.

The 1970s:
Some of the glitter rock early seventies, most punk
and new wave bands of the latter 1970s.

The 1980's
most punk, post punk, and new wave bands, as well
the majority of the garage rock revivalists.

The 1990s:
Very few bands

I look forward to the posts on this list.

Subject: Re: Intro: Where can I find a Vox Organ?

Melvin asked where to get a Vox Continental...

My suggestion - once upon a time - would've been, "try eBay." Thing is,
you'll probably be horrified at the prices at this point. You might try
http://www.voxshowroom.com and see what people are asking for in the ads
section on there, but - again - they might be kinda high.

So... what would I do? Keep my ears and eyes open. Check old music stores
(ones that've been around for eons.) For instance, up here in northern NJ
where I reside, Robbie's Music in Wayne probably still has some old combo
organs (tho' I doubt they still have any Vox organs, otherwise Dave Amels
or I would've grabbed 'em).

Also check local flea markets (Susan Mackey of The Omega Men and Cellar
Dwellers got a few at those) and garage sales. Then there are newspaper
classifieds, be they the regular papers or your local weeklies. About ten
years ago, I saw a listing for an old wooden Wurlitzer from the late 50s
and passed on it 'cuz I figured it'd be completely wrecked. Instead, I told
my pal Dave Amels about it and he got it for 25 bucks. (And it worked
fine!)

You might also be interested in asking questions of other combo organ
enthusiasts. If so, go to OneList.com and search for the ComboOrgan list
(which also includes some other Bompers).

If you're not limiting yourself to Vox, might I suggest the Elka Panther?
It's got some great sounds. I'm also a big fan of Farfisa (mainly the Combo
Compact and Compact Deluxe models) and Acetone (esp. the Model Top 8, which
I have.)
