Sorry to chime in late but I just caught up with this from a backlog of
mail...Rob and Deniz have always been close friends. That relationship
doesn't have anything to do with Birdman no longer being a functioning unit.

Just so no-one gets their hopes up, Rob was asked to sing for Deep Reduction
on a forthcoming (April) European tour, but I don't think it's happening. I
understand he has no desire to play in the States, anyway. Touring Europe is
more his bag.

If you want them to play at your festival/Club this year, please don't wait
to the last minute get in touch now! thanks (beluga@wineasy.se)

More stuff from the dialtones coming on:

The Dialtones – So Many Girls 7" (Fro 020) Out 15/2 One split 7" on Beluga
and already The Dialtones got snatched up by Screaming Apple who recently
released their debut album. And you will understand why. Kick ass rock 'n'
roll with more hooks than the entire set up of the Hellraiser trilogy. Some
compare this Swedish band to Devil Dogs, we just call it cool punk rock!!

Dailtones The - The Dailtones (LP) (Screaming apple)
There's a brandnew rock'n'roll sensation coming from Sweden called the
DIALTONES and this time it's not just another bunch of cock-sucking
hard-rock clones. What we're talking about here is REAL r'n'r in the
tradition of such fabulous bands like the DEVIL DOGS in DMZ. In fact these
3 young guys could become the new DEVIL DOGS, playing exactly those totally
energetic, wild rockin', super catchy 120 seconds anthems the New York
based was wellknown for. 12 action-packed examples of a truely extatic, hot
& sweaty r'n'r blast are delivered here and if you believe in the power
of youth and speed and know that it can become a delicious, but very
dangerous cocktail, this one's for you, daddy-oh!

The DIALTONES - see her tonite 7'' Yep, another Rock n Roll killer machine
outta the deep woods of Swedenland. Omph...the return of the DEVIL
DOGS??? Uh...yeah...you can get the impression while listening to the
fast, wild and pretty energetic songs of the DIALTONES. You might know
the guys from their debut release, the split-7'' with AEROBITCH, where
they convinced with 2 hot and sweaty blasts. And that was just the
beginning of a young bands rock'n'roll career, that’s for sure. Here
they go with 2 songs and a playing time of less than 3 minutes. The title
track see her tonite is different to the version on their just released
very first album on Screaming Apple Records. Gimme one minute is
exclusive. This one-sided piece of black vinyl is ltd. to 500 and comes
with a 2-coloured sticker.

Aerobitch / Dialtones - Split (Beluga)
Awesome release by two awesome bands.
Aerobitch, just think of powerfull punk'n'roll with screaming girl vocals
over heavy guitar action.
Dialtones, two short and sweet tracks, kissoff! 27sec and 45rpm 1,26

HEY,

Don't tell me Soundtrack of Our LIves have split!!!! Caesar's Palaces new album
is called "Cherry Kicks"
it'll be out in march I think. I've heard two songs from it and they're just
mindblowing. Slightly less punk more
versatile more pop more psych- just better than Youth is wasted on the young.
And that was pretty great
already. "I'm Gonna Kick you out " was THE new garage song for me. I better call
Dolores-Isse in Gothenburg
to check this soundtrack rumour out. Tobba is putting a new Barbwires 7" out
soon but he can tell you more about it.
Caesar's Palace is the one record I'm really looking forward to. About finnish
scene: the most exciting piece of news is the
fact that we're recording a minialbum (9 tunes) for GEARHEAD, due in may. I just
saw the cover design and it's amazing
(by Chris Imlay of HI-Fives).

ONe more thing:

According to their crosstown rivals The Strollers the Roadrunners have split up.
Any sould fan should also chect out a dolores 45 by REVELATION from Stockholm.
Sounds like the Supremes 1964. Pretty good.

Just got back from a tour of Sweden... The Union 69 album "Holiday 2000" is
out right now on Bad Afro. The Rockets have a new 7" out on Bad Afro as
well. The SOULS have not disbanned but they are having trouble with the
label so it might get a while before there will be new material out. The
Turpentines are about to release their second album on White Jazz in a
matter of weeks... The Roadrunners have split up, but The Strollers seem to
be very much together (there was a rumor of them splitting up as well).
Royal Beat Conspiracy is very active recording new material but they are
still looking for a label - they have 4-5 albums worth of unreleased
material in the can! The Hellacopters will be going to studio in April to
record their next album and a split-10" with the Flaming Sideburns... which
reminds me of Finland. The Sideburns will record their first real album in
May/June and there's couple of new singles coming out on Safety Pin & Bang!
very soon. Thee Ultra Bimboos are just finishing their next album "Four Fans
Can't Be Wrong", due to come out in March/April. There's also bunch of
interesting new releases by bands like The Festermen, Ulamatic and Deepspace
Sexchange. Thee Mighty Hypnomen have their album finally out in USA.
And if you guys ever wanna make it up here, do it next summer! We are
organizing Gearfest parteeees in Helsinki (22/6) and Stockholm (24/6) with
kool Scandinavian bands like The Nomads, The Hellacopters, The Robots, Thee
Bimboos, The Sideburns, Hypnomen and much much more.

actually I have long been aware that I have thrift store curse. I stick
to garage sales because of that. while everyone was doing thrift stores
I was driving to 4 or 5 garage sales a weekend. one reason I like ebay,
I can pay for items that I was always too cursed to pick up- and some
ebay categories sell for like 1/10 of their "book value" because the
books were inflated..

How about your top 3 gigs? This is a fairly impossible task, but:

1) Husker Du at the Living Room (around 1989)
2) Lyres at Nightstage (around 1988)
3) The Cramps at The Channel (Dec. 31 1987)

Any other Bostonians at those shows?

This post has nada about The Maker, but seeing Joan Jett listed here, I wondered
if ANY knew of the project with The Gits she was involved with (I'll leave out

contributed to some benefits, but never heard anything again. Zapata made

No. There was a huge article about the case in the Seattle Times one Sunday
about a year ago (?), probably on or about the anniversary of the murder,
and as I recall it seemed pretty hopeless.

Greetings,

"A Million Miles Away" is a great song by the
Plimsouls; however, I just purchased "Groove
Groovieist Hits" by the Flaming Groovies.
They have a good renedeition of "A Million
Miles Away" as well as the Hoodoo Gurus'
"Bittersweet."

Question? I was wondering if Bomp Records still has
their compilation from their first 20 years in print?
The title escapes me. I use to have it, but I lost it
when I moved several months ago. It was my first
exposure to the pre-Lyres, DMZ. I forgot the early
band's name that Greg Shaw belong to, but this early
Beatles style imitation was one of the best I heard.
I believe it was the second song on the compilation
after the excellent "You Tore Me Down" by the Flaming
Groovies.

Getting back to the soundtrack of "Valley Girl."
I actually think that "I Melt With You" represents
what's best about the more mainstream New Wave
sounds. It's every bit as wonderful as the more
obscure "Eye of the Lens" by the Comsat Angels.
If anybody's really into college radio alternative
of the early 80s, I seriously recommend Rhino's
"Post Punk Chronicles." All three volumes are good.

Peace,

The 20th-Anniversary retrospective is called Desination Bomp
and yes, it's still in print.

oh god, yep, Caesar's Palace are one of the MUST-HAVE in any decent record
collection... "Youth Is waisted On The youth" was a more than good Lp (the
vocals are just purely perfect ), but I was more than ever astonished by the
7'' tthey issued a few months ago on Dolores, called something like "Shake
It"... It seems that they came back to their punkish roots (stuff like there
was on "Rock De Puta Mierda"), the 3 titles on that EP are just pure
demented goldish garage-PUNK.
I can't wait to hear how they sound now..."less punk, more pop, more psy"
???? something inbetween "Youth...." and "Shake It" ??? Wouldn't be a
surprise for dudes like that, for which Love and the Seeds are the main
references !(although they sound rather different !) Anyway, we'll see...
bythe way, on which label is it supposed to come out ? Dolores ? Uppers ??.
Caesar's Palace, a band we could easely call "the futur of garage punk",
they're so far away from the typical 1-2-5 or Louie Louie cover, these guys
are just more than 5 years ahead of their times ! I just wish we could talk
more of that kinda bands on the bomp list, cause they're simply one ofthe
best of their times, they've got the balls to kick the garage dinosaur right
in the ass and give him a chance to pass the next evolutionary test. Give em
a listen and you'll throw all your fuckin Detour Rds right in the bin.

You said it Pekka !!! Pretty good is an euphemism, don't know anything from
these guys- where's the fuck are they comin from ??? - apart that they got
the sound !!! excellent, really...
Talking about Dolores, you've forgotten to indicate that every bi-ears
species on earth should be subscribed to the Dolores Rds fan club, cause
I've till now never heard a shitty side coming out of their factory. From
what I know, the label is run by Samie, from the Backdoor Men &
Livingstones... the guy has still a rather good taste in music, you can
believe me !!! For infos bout the club, go to the Hot Stuff mailorder page
(http://www.hotstuff.se) or ask Trevor at Beluga if he carries the 7''.

Subject: The Make hers...all done (long!)

First things first...its called Rock Star God, and it's a double
LP, so says the advance sleeve, and remember its on Sub Pop...right, so at
this time you may go ahead and presume what you may as things have
definitely CHANGED! I've no word, at the moment, on any Joan Jett
connection...but Suzi Quatro would been cooler!
Okay, I've heard it through twice now...and GLAM is the
perrrrr-fect description, but it's not "Glam Punk"...in fact, there's NO
real "punk" action to be found, its all about R-O-C-K! Uh, and you die
hard fans, well, you'll just DIE as the Makers have completely left the
safety of their garage, there are no f-f-fuzzed out barnstormers. And this
time its a "concept" record, as the last seemed to feel, but the sleeve
actually states THIS is a "concept" work, however, the narrative wasn't
incredibly distinct, which is fine as repeated listens may benefit from
such discoveries.
Personally, I like the record, its STILL the Makers! And the only
"issues" I have is Rock Star is NOT quite as buoyant as Psycho Sexulalis
was, Rock Star has a longer running time and, I feel, if it had been edited
to a single LP they may've kept the record from kinda dragging (Dave Crider
[Estrus' king bee] sequenced Psycho, so they say)...but the decision to
support the narrative may have insisted the time run longer. Otherwise,
the production isn't quite as dramatic...this is a very commercial
"product"...oh, did I mention this time there are even some almost
indie/gothic touches! HUH?!?!?...I know, and there are back up singers,
some Hammond and horns...its GLAM like T REX, NOT Bowie/Iggy!
Honestly, tho' no matter what he plays, Jamie is a fookin'
brilliant axeman...and now that he THANKFULLY cut his hair (its now kinda
in a back combed mullet) folks won't congratulated me on HIS good shows
anymore!!! Uh, we could be brothers...its true! Every time they played
out the punters would come up to ME shake my damn hand with a "Dude, you
guys ROCKED!"...WHAT, like, even as I'm wearing different clothes (usually
a GIANT parka) and sportin' very DRY hair (he always gets so sweaty when
they play)! Shit, I've even had complete conversations with strangers he'd
meet elsewhere...its almost got me into fights on the East Coast too! Oh
well...enough of my ramblin'...
Lastly, I was shocked to somehow acknowledge this LP as a
reflection of what's been happening, for the hipster kids, in Seattle
recently...as there (in '98/'99) has been a huge undercurrent of GLAM
metal, '80s pop type, fed by those "in the know" types. Remember most of
the kids who now dig the '80s glam didn't grow up gettin their titties
twisted or their noses busted, by be-mulleted A-holes! For them its all
new, while '70s glam is kinda reserved for the older "punks"...who dress
like Teddy Boys!? Right, anyways, its weird as the Makers certainly came
out of the '80's fightin' that mentality, so why the concessions?
Whatever, I guess its not the same...but...maybe all things are fogiven in
Art.

>will it be better than the recent Lord High Fixers

in terms of it rising above the LHF's latest, I reckon thats a matter of
taste...tho' there's no conssession to hip hop!
