Not to take away business from an establishment you probably frequent
regularly, BUT...................you COULD (!lightbulb!) order straight
from the source, Bomp!

Funny you should mention it... why yes, the Scram gang is in the process of writing the true story of Hanna Barbera music, and in fact the whole dang bubblegum genre, for publication as a Feral House paperback sometime in the not too distant future. Chris Davidson and Becky Ebenkamp are our resident TV-rock scholars, and they have turned up some wild facts about shoulda-been and kinda-were stars like The Impossibles, Cattanooga Cats (the REAL heirs to the Parsons-era Byrds!), Josie and the Pussycats, the Beagles, the Chan Clan and of course the B. Splits. Trust me, you're all going to be amazed.

Kim

out soon: Scram #11, featuring Greg Shaw and Gene Sculatti on sixties rock zines, Johnny Ramone spills his guts, The Chamber Strings, Danish industrial parks, The Embrooks, Bob Newhart in concert, "My Boss... Kim Fowley?!" and more.

The Banana Splits were the Gold Star studios (of LA) session musicians
featuring Barry White on some vocals. I'm sure someone in in the
process of writing the true store of hanna barbera music.

The roaches are about the size of field mice. I used
to use a riding crop to knock 'em out of the air (yes,
they fly, and they fly around your house if they get
in, and I had a couple fly at my head!), and when I
knocked 'em down, the cats would finish 'em off.
Great source of amusement, these roaches/palmetto
bugs.

Evan, as great as the Hatebombs are, as a Floridian I must take exception to
that statement. There are plenty of excellent bands in the sunshine state,
but some are probably just not strictly garage, (or too well known outside
their town). . . . I don't live down there anymore, but go visit often and
keep in touch with old pals in eff-ell-lay. . . . Recent releases worth of
note --

Rob McGregor - "Valentine" --new CD from the leader of Gainesville veteran
outfit Grain, reminds me of Neil Young and Crazy Horse at their most
distortion-drenched.

Panthro UK UNited 13 (I have no idea what the name stands for) - "Sound of a
Gun" --Naked Raygun-esque punk attack, also from G'ville.

Again, neither of the above two are really garage, but they're definitely
rock 'n' roll. . . . BUT THEN . . . . There's Miami's Trash Monkeys, who
have been around for what seems like forever, and are still plugging at it.
They used to do an amazing cover of "Yummy Yummy." To this date, I still
don't think they have a full-length CD or LP out. They're definitely
Bomp-worthy, as are Ft. Lauderdale's Drug Czars. Check out their 7" "Go Go
Satan!"

But none of this is to detract from the greatness of the Hatebombs, with
whom I greeted 2000 at the Kit Kat in Orlando. . . .

When I first moved to DC from Fla., one of my housemates was from San
Francisco, and she ran away screaming at the sight of a large roach! I just
stepped on it and went about my business, since I'm used to much bigger,
anyways. They do leave a mess when you stomp on them, though.

what was it with interviewing people in their hotel rooms? With all the

I will sadly mention that when Deniz Tek played in DC, the crowd was
maybe 100 people and he was stunning, just fantastic. When I told
people what they missed they said they didn't recognize his name! I
mean, it's DeniZ, how can you not recognize that? So if they get the
crowds in europe they should just go for it.

favorite garage gigs:
#1. Cramps- New Years 1988- Warner Theater, DC (I broke up with myu
girlfriend like 10 days earlier and it was an amazing fresh start)
#2. A-Bones/ Fender Benders - DC Space, DC 1990? The A-bones played a
monumental set, people were collapsing on the floor from dancing too
hard, Billy(?) or maybe the older guitarist rode on their sax player's
shoulders, they played for nearly 2 hours. AND, AND, the original
Wraymen opened as the Fender Benders, a band name they used either
before or during their back up stint with Link (I may be confusing shows
here) and it was the first time I really saw people play truly old-style
guitar. in the sense that every modern garage guitarist just can't
copy. people were drenched with sweat from all the dancing. How long
has it been for me to be at a show when the crowd was drenched with
sweat from too much dancing?
3. Cynics - Roxy, February? 1988. The first Cynics headliner show I
saw, they opened for a DC band and they were great but still shaky in
(Nov 87?) but by the second show they did (which may actually have been
at the Safari Club in DC, I forget) they were doing really well and
personel arguments were at a minimum.
4. ? and the Mysterians, Black Cat, DC, 1998? I am not sure when this
show was, but it was the first time I saw them since I missed the
cavestomp show. Again, they played nearly 2 hours with non-stop
intensity.
5. Cynics/Brood - DC Space Summer 1988? A very good show for both
bands, a scenester event for me, I remember this amazing crowd with
everyone talking to each other. There was a Cynics/Vile Cherubs show
that was really good that same year. They played approx 8 shows in DC
in 1988.

I edited out all the non-garage shows.

Joan Jett/Mia Zapata/ Mia's murder
>No. There was a huge article about the case in the Seattle Times one
Sunday
>about a year ago (?), probably on or about the anniversary of the
murder,
>and as I recall it seemed pretty hopeless.

without saying too much, she had been fighting with 2 different guys
before she died and unless one of them confesses there is not enough
physical evidence to charge. ther ewill be no real "movement" on the
case if you catch my drift. the cops think they found the guy AFAIK,
but there's no real evidence.

Joan's band with the Gits was Evil Stig. The gits band without Mia was
the long name- Dancing French Liberals of 42 or something. Joan is from
around where I grew up.

see, i knew i'd get some heat on this---if it helps, my office is in a music
distributorship so people do have the occasional clue in regard to hip-hep
and happening, cool, boss and bitchin' tunes----and remember, a record can
be popular and still be cool---if this list isn't founded on hits like "96
Tears", "Psychotic Reaction", "Hey Joe" and "Heart Full of Soul" then
somewhere I made a wrong turn in 1970 when I first stumbled across Who Put
The Bomp----jeez, I can be a master of sarcasm also, but the fact remains
that a good record is a good record and this is a good record.

soul, blue eyed soul, and dusty springfield etc---just got a new pop release

really harkens back to Dusty in Memphis (which is a truly great
disc)---anyway, i've just go to recommend I Am Shelby Lynne---former ten
degrees out nashville type singer who sounds like she got whuupped by a
soul stick from mussel shoals---well done disc---third time though and
people are sticking their head into my office asking "who is that?"---check
it out...---okay, back to the bomp diaspora...

I second that recommendation. Shelby Lynne is one of the very few Nashville
acts worth listening to. The others are Who Hit John, The Shazam and The
Phanton V.

Subject: the Gits

The project Joan Jett got involved with the members of the Gits
is called Evil Stig and there is one CD out.

I'm not going to talk on the murder (it's been seven years now) but
I still listen to the Gits a lot, probably more often than any other
band really. On the internet there was a touching article on Mia
by an ex-member of the Gits, and if you are a Gits fan and haven't
checked that, you really should read it. But that article disappeared
for some reason (it's on one of the stupid geocites pages) and
I couldn't find it again right now. Anyway, I have it in my computer
so let me know by e-mail if any of you are interested in.

The only good Gits-influenced band in my opinion is Tilt with
Cinder Block, whose lyrics are very smart with full of imagination.
Their new album called "Viewers Like You" is the best work
they have ever done.
