Do the Dialtones have anything out? I heard about em and wanted to check 'em
but can't find nuthin'. Also, is there a good place in sweden to order
swedish records? I used to order from flaky ol' sonically speaking but they
went bankrupt. Thanks

Uhhh . . . I was gonna talk about this really cool Vertical Pillows
show in Hamtramck . . .

never mind . . .

Jeez . . . Lynn . . . was the Stones show really better than the
Beatles on Ed Sullivan? or the Sonics' first public gig? And what
about the time you saw ? and the Mysterians at the Ionia, Michigan
Free Fair in 1966 (opening acts: Iggy and the Iguanas, MC5 and the
Unrelated Segments!)?

I'm not nagging . . . and you're not bragging . . . it's just that
I'd give my eyeteeth to have seen any of these shows . . . well,
except for that Sting thing . . .

Greetings,

Since we are talking about various shows we liked,
I'll add my two cents worth. In 1985, I saw U-2
in Hampton, VA. I was more looking forward to the
opening act, the Red Rockers. However, Lone Justice
opened for U-2 instead. Not a bad show, but I really
wanted to hear the Red Rockers live. By the way,
what became of the Red Rockers?

That same year I saw REM with 10,000 Manics opening
up for them in Raleigh. Afterwards, I didn't go to
anymore shows for years. I lived in the an extremely
rural part of North Carolina, which severly restricted

my travel. In 1992, I saw Ride with the Pale Saints
opening up. The Pale Saints were great!

The best show was My Bloody Valentine, when they
opened
up for Dinosaur Jr. I think I lost some of my hearing
that night from My Bloody Valentine, but it was worth
it. That was also in 1992.

Another show that in a lot of ways might have been
better was the Sleazefest Festival at the Local
506 in Chapel Hill. It made my whole evening to
hear the Fleshtones live. I met Peter Zaremba and
company later that night. I was even lucky enough
to have some pictures taken with them, although
they were drunk as hell that night. Satan's Pilgrims
was a decent psycho-surf band that same night.

BRING BACK IRS The Cutting Edge,
Melvin Little

God, what a title !!!! terrible !!!! well, unfortunatly, we were so purists
that we kept playin "Mary Ann" just the way is has to be, i.e Dee
Ranger's.... but you know, playig in shitty & cold caves is hard during the
winter in switzerland (can't imagine how it is playing during the eternal
winters in Sweden !), so, well, we're so lazy that we gonna wait till the
spring to see if the girls still worth playin in a band (hum... 'tho you
better be a techno DJ these days rather than a garage punk if you wanna have
a boobsy summer - don't know if it's the right term, hope you understand me)

Wow some extremely cool rock'n'roll experiences being shared. Makes me think
I was born too late reading Lenny's & Lynn's reminisces. Anyway it's a very
difficult ask to pick the ultimate shows but here's some memorable ones.....

X (the Australian one) over many occasions in the mid to late 80s in Sydney.
Amazing band that still play around to this day & are as incredible as ever.
I pick this era as it was my formative gig-going years & I was being
constantly blown away by many great Sydney bands (New Christs, Died Pretty,
Hoodoo Gurus etc).

Johnny Thunders, Mosman Hotel Sydney 1986 or 1987. Got to witness one of my
all-time heroes in the flesh (with Jerry Nolan as well). Incredible.

A jaunt to the USA in the early 90s gave me the opportunity to see the Lyres
at CBGBs late 1991 which was very cool. But the most interesting (?) or at
least memorable ones were GG Allin at the Khyber Pass in Philly around
July/August/September 1991 (the most extreme 'performance' I've ever seen- &
I can still smell the poop....) & the Dwarves at the Gaslight in Hollywood
around February/March 1991. 15 minutes of chaos as Blag went beserk throwing
tables, chairs & anything else he could get his hands on & the security guys
actually backed off, no doubt unwilling to take on a guy who appeared
totally nuts, despite being twice his size. I heard later that pictures from
this show ended up in the sleeve of the second Dwarves album.

Also, the Radio Birdman reunion shows a couple of years back were incredible
for me as I was too young to have seen them in their 1976-78 heyday.

There's my 2 cents worth........

Karl.

Bomp is the best mailing list I have ever been on...I've said that time and
again...also I am actually having quite a good year if you must know. It is
just that in my opinion while there are some people who like to talk about
many different genres...many people on here are mostly 60s oriented, despite
countless arguments I've heard against this. And this is fine. I don't feel
I'm harming anyone by making another mailing list. If you ask me...Garage66
mailing list is probably much closer to Bomp! than REALRocknroll may
be...although Bomp! is still far broader then Garage'66. I also love Bomp!
and plan on never unsubscribing.

Does anybody have any info on a St. Louis band from the '60's that ht
the carts with a song titled "Gales Winds"? They were called the
Egyptiam Combo. The reason I'm asking is because there is a CD out
titled "The National Releases '64-'67", and I'm wondering whether it's
worth gambling on. Anybody?? Thanks.

The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, PA has his personal archives which
would be the most likely place for that film to reside. When I was last
there (and carrying archivist credentials) they showed me his autograph
album, which is just F*cked up to see photos pf ALL the huge 1940s
glamour actresses photos signed "To Andy Warhola." A twisted AMC
network dream. And I think I also saw this great correspondence he had
with Divine in the early 70s talking about the making of the John Waters
empire from circa 1972. but don't trust me 100% on that one.

I was there for their VU exhibit which had the paperback, groupies
singles, Beechnuts singles, etc. But they didn't really show any films
besides the common ones. If he really did do the screentests on
everyone that walked into the Factory then, well, they'd have a ton of
film already.

Hanna-Barbera Records in Scram's book-
so, someone finally found Tom Ayres? ya talk to Kenny Laguna?

Here are some of my favorite shows. Anybody there with me?

- -Boredoms first (?) in Boston at the Middle East ('95ish). I couldn't stop
smiling the whole time. 2 drummers (one happening to be super cute). A
trumpet. And what's his name hanging off the ceiling. At another show the
same guy was running around sans pants and underpants. Nice.

- -Pixies during maybe their first real tour at Sheehan's in Northampton,
Mass. They only had enough songs for half a set so they played some songs
twice. What a show for the about 25 people there.

- -Casper Brotzman upstairs at the Middle East about 5 years ago. Walked in on
this one very late. The smell of his smoking amp was yummy.

- -Sebadoh at Katinas in Northampton when they were amazing ie. their first
couple years. Total punk. Lots of switching of instruments with some
inspired playing in a pretty inappropriate setting.

Wipers, Lyres at the Channel who knows when, Replacements...

hmmm---velvets at the tea party with warhol---i saw them (and him) there
more than a few times---i never knew if it was really andy or his
professional double (now what was his name) that he would hire to sppear on
the "scene"---Nico was stunningly beautiful at that point---remember the 20
minutes in Chelsea Girls where she painstakingly trims her bangs...upstairs
at the tea party was an office some guys from the fort hill/mel lyman
community used and the early filmakers cinematheque started there---i saw
those films, joined a class and was doing a lot of hand painting and
scratching on filmstock---ended up being asked to do backing films for a
show the velvets did in beantown at an old glamorous but past it's prime
movie theatre near the combat zone---showed the movie Tha Happening (theme
song by the supremes), then a diana dew fashion show, then the
velvets---three nights in a row of this---great fun----speaking of films
with music, in the late 70's, the edmonds theatre (seattle) showed movies
and had bands for one whole summer---i still remember seeing rock and roll
high school and then the Heats (nee Heaters)---two showings, two sets---why
don't more places try this combination---but i digress

I'm not very familiar with the music of Adrian Belew, but I'm looking at a
list of his song titles, and it looks like this could be almost any of his
songs! The guy seems to have had some kind of rhino fetish..."Final Rhino,"
"Sexy Rhino," Lone Rhinoceros"...He had one minor hit single, called "Oh
Daddy," which featured his daughter...

I think the most enjoyable show I ever saw was the Rubinoos (opening for
Elvis Costello) at the Paramount in Seattle in early 1979. They were
amazing, though quite a few of the Elvis fans didn't like them. Others
worthy of note:

- --Louis Armstrong, Seattle 1964 or 65. I was about 5, and I guess my mom
didn't want to go so my dad took me. I barely remember it, but I do
remember that the songs I was familiar with were "Hello Dolly," "Mack the
Knife" and "When the Saints Go Marching in."

- --22 years ago today, 2-3-78, my first rock concert, the Ramones at the
Paramount. I saw the Ramones three more times in the next five years, but I
really can't remember one being better than the others.

- --September 1987, Western Washington State Fair in Puyallup, The Monkees.
When they came to Seattle in 1967 my dad wouldn't take me (he wouldn't take
me to see the Beatles in '66 either), so 20 years later I got to see them
(without Mike) and it was not a disappointment. A wonderful show.

- --Labor Day Weekend, 1998, Seattle's Bumbershoot festival--On separate days
I saw ? & the Mysterians and Buck Owens. The ? show was like a religious
experience; Buck's was a very different vibe (duh) but just as enjoyable.

It's *impossible* to whittle down the BEST gigs one's been to in a short
list, especially when you go to shows constantly since the age of 15
and the trip you take via the shows is like an ongoing (still) musical
adventure that never stops evolving or expanding. I purposely left
off most Bomp/Crypt/Estrus/Lookout/Norton/, Peek-a-Boo, etc, etc,
Bomplike bands, for we all see these bands constantly. My list contains
shows that were SUPRISINGLY stunning to ME in some way. The shows I
glean the most fun from are usually energy-driven(except the haunting
DCD and GBV shows) Standing at a show sans energy good or not, drives
me mad. I can listen to beauty and behold it w/ my own ears at home,
seated comfortably.

   * Guided By Voices, I-Beam, SF (1994) hardly anyone was there, before
GBV became critics darlings. Beautiful, untouched, surreal, SHORT,
one of THE best shows I've ever seen. Since many itmes, new
line-ups, sans the olde magick and not the same intimacy.
   * New Model Army/Lords of the New Church (San Jose, '87, second time
on acid, egads, was NMA ugly, cuz that acid was good, scared the
     pants off of me)
   * Roky Erickson with Speedy Sparks and The Soul Benders, Antone's,
Austin, 1996 at a beneift for his brother. Only one song, but it
     was HIM.
   * Butthole Surfers, Austin, first time, 1986 (venue?  I was 18, can't
     remember, INSANE)
   * Circle Jerks, Theatre Gallery, Dallas, 1984(snuck out, lied to
     parents)
   * Preservation Hall Band, Stern Grove, SF (no one in the band under
     80!)Dixieland at it's best
   * Pixies, Soul Asylum (before they went off &...)Warfield Theater,
     1991 (LONG show,worth it)later that year saw Pixies, Jane's
Addiction. inverse experience. leave that be.
   * Stevie Ray Vaughn, Austin, 1987, sev times, all exceptional
   * Stiff Little Fingers, I-Beam summer, 1989, SF *(couldn't believe
     it!)
   * ? and The Mysterians, twice in '99, Electric Lounge, Austin
   * Overwhelming Colorfast, SF, Brave New World, NYE, '92, (Chris
     proposed)
   * Buzzcocks, I-Beam '91,SF (nostalgia done purrrrfectly)
   * Wesley Willis, Chameleon, SF, ('95?, Braves had just won world
series, and he head-butted me for good-luck and read me his
     McDonald's poems outta his notebook)
   * Bellrays, Emo's, SXSW '99!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Best of 99 by far.
   * My Bloody Valentine, SF, Kennel Club, 92, (still ongoing jokes
     about this outfit?)
   * The Descendants, Santa Cruz, The Catalyst, 1986
   * Arthur Lee's second Bottom of the Hill SF show, '95
   * Sebadoh,(biggest indie guy shleprock gathering ever!)BOTH. SF
   * Pavement, see above!
   * Hellacopters, Nomads Emo's '99 packed to the gills,
     rocked.......HARD.
   * Hi-Fives, Sinister Six, Purple Onion, '95 (mayhem ensued) lived at
     the PO practically for yrs.
   * American Music Club, Private Party, 17th & Capp St, SF '96
   * MCM and the Monster, Paradise Lounge, SF, 93
   * Quadrajets, Austin, 99,Emo's
   * Poopoo Peepee Pants, Nightbreak, SF, '92
   * Imperial Butt Wizards, Nightbreak, SF
   * The Abe Lincoln Story, (The Als)Brave New World, SF '95
   * Tom Waits, Paramount Theater, Oakland, '96
   * The Cramps/Sonic Youth, SF Warfield, '89(seen both bands tooo many
     x's)
   * Candy Snatchers, Purple Onion, SF 1995, Bates Motel, '98(I include
     them even tho seen'em 10+x's)
   * Dead Can Dance (crowd very Death in June-ish ,but OH, so lovely)
   * Third Bardot,The Hate Bombs, Vipers, and the more obnoxious bands @
Cavestomp '99(didn't adore my hubbies Gravedigger set
     alas........oops)
   * Jad Fair, Paradise Lounge, SF, 1996
   * Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, SF, Kennel Club '94 or '95
   * Thee Hypnotics/BJM, SF Bottom of the Hill, 1995or '94
   * Leaving Trains, Lime Spiders Nightbreak, SF, 1993-6
   * Sister Double Happiness, Kennel Club, SF,1990(& sev other times)
   * Psychic TV, Celebrity Skin, Austin, 1989 or 88
   * Mermen, Cake, and The Loved Ones (Oakland's), Fillmore, SF 1996
   * The Damned, SF 89, Austin, '98 and '99(for sap factor alone)
   * Man or Astroman? for the first time, '(seen 'em countless since, a
     little luster lost)

I'll stop, there IS no way to keep listing, it would go on
forever........ I've left our Royal Trux type stories due to band drug
use, left out all the wonderful hardcore shows, the stoner rock
contingency (, lips, olivia tremor control, neutral milk hotel), the
psychobilly pomadour ansgst rockers, bands from our hall of flyers and
posters from SD and LA, lotsa Crawdaddys, Tell-Tale Hearts, (Gravedigger
Five and Morlocks of course), The Answers, my very young penchant for
Echo and The Bunnymen along w/The Minutemen, Jazz, Performance Art,
Industrial, UltraNoize, (how bout those Boredoms?)Aggro, Nostalgia,
(saw Cheap Trick last summer and LOVED every second)
goes on ad infinitum. Yeah, I prefer garage, garage punk, mod, psyche,
and the indescribable indies, but these shows all took me totally
unaware and that is the greatest thing, being pleasantly suprised by
great music.

I realize this was supposed to be 3 great shows and limited, but I can't
cut things short, apologies.
I'm going to dream about the scads of shows I neglected to mention, but
you'll all be glad I mercifully ended this when I did. Felt good
remembering.............what I could glean from my brain that is.

~ALYSSA
