Okay, seeing the Lyres and GG Allin in the same post
gives me to opportunity to ask if anyone knows if
there's any truth behind a story I was told recently.

I was told that, at a recent show (maybe New Year's
Eve) of I *think* the Real Kids, Monoman got up on
stage and "did" a head of lettuce. Supposedly it was
a response to Carly Carioli of the Boston Phoenix and
his recent editorials about Jeff and the Lyres. Um,
has anyone else heard this story? Did it really
happen? I heard it from a source that I am not sure
is reliable (I don't know the person too well).

The Paramount? The building's still there, but I
think it's empty. The combat zone is limited to one
porn shop and one strip joint now, I think. Unless
it's after midnight, when all the prostitutes come
out.

There's a Chinese restaurant that used to be a porno
movie house. Uh, gross.

Subject: Girls In The Garage: NOT!

Had to chime in on this post citing the first Girls In The Garage comp::

>>Hey...
Number 1 is the best...the Denise and Co, Belles, Continental Co-Ets and the
great "I'm on your Prey" by the Glass Opening are all fabulous<<

The Denise & Company track is listed as "Take Me As I Am" on the comp,
probably sourced from a 5th generation cassette dub of the 45. Truth be
told, that ain't the correct title. The song is "Boy, What Will You Do
Then". Penned in mid 1965 by Denise Kaufman of SF, backed in the studio by
the Answer of "I'll Be In" fame. Far as I know, only one person has this 45
(it ain't me, damn it!)

The Glass Opening don't belong on a Girls In The Garage comp, because there
ain't no chicks in the band! The lead singer was in fact a pre teen guy,
not a girl. The 45 came out in 1971 (yup, believe it folks) after the debut
Glass Opening 45, which was a split single. The G.O. did "All Those Lies"
on the Dondee label in 1970, with a different group on the flipside. A
Verycool minorkey organ mesmerizer (at least for me).
The other tune by the Glass Opening is the topside to "I'm On Your Prey",
called "My Heart Is Heavy". It's got the kid vocal, but a real late 60's
heavy guitar sound. Krunch!!

I always thought it funny how "I'm On Your Prey" was tagged as by a girl
garage group. If you listen, the kid sez "Keep It Up Now GIRL, I'm On Your
Prey..." I think the same sex preference woulda been toofarout a concept in
1971.

Yeah, I saw him a couple of years later. It wasn't
INCREDIBLE, but it wasn't awful either. I remember
that he DID rap, he DID "modernize" things. He
shoulda just kept with what he was famous for . . .

Robby, Night Flite was a 2 or 4 hour slot on Friday or
Saturday nights on USA. The show Peter Ivers hosted
was "New Wave Theatre". You can still find "Best of
New Wave Theatre Vols. 1 and 2" sometimes on video.

I watched Night Flite RELIGIOUSLY. I tape tons of
stuff off there, but alas the tapes did not withstand
the tests of time and mulitple playings.

OH, yeah, and Peter Ivers was murdered. He was either
stabbed or bludgeoned to death. Horrible way to die,
either way.

And on that note . . .

Non bompish, melancholy, etheral folk sort of like Tim Buckley, but with a
different voice. Syd Barrett's solo albums might be another comparison. He
did 3 albums, plus one of outtakes. If you like him, they're all worth
hearing.

Larry, Snazzy,
Steven Weed was in the Velvet Illusions.

Some more that spring to mind:

Don Johnson (Miami Vice) was in Horses - 2 45s on White Whale in '69.

TV game show host Chuck Woolery was in the Avant Garde who had 3 45s on
Columbia 1967-1968. Titles include - 'Yellow Beads', 'Honey & Gall',
'Naturally
Stoned' - mainly orchestrated pop with hippie vibes.

Chevy Chase was in Chamaeleon Church, who put out an enchanting soft-psych
LP - vastly under-rated in my 'umble opinion. Evocative writing from Ted
Myers
who continued the mood set by his and The Lost's 'Violet Gown' - a Boston
and
60s classic.

Trippin' across to the best gigs thread -
my #1 is undoubtedly the Paradise in Boston, March 1999. The Lost,
reunited
after 30+ years for their one-off gig, delivered a stunning set, sandwiched

between the Rising Storm and the Remains. I could go on and on about this
life-event of a gig but I'll spare y'all (though I've indulged on the
Fuzz, Acid
and Flowers website!).

#2 - Bevis Frond, Steppes, Chemistry Set at the Freakbeat Freak Out gig,
Greyhound, Fulham Palace Road, 29/12/89. Underground ecstasy with
coloured sugar cube handouts.

#3 - a possibly contentious and definitely non-Bomp choice: - Genesis,
Trick Of
The Tail tour - 1976, Hammersmith Odeon, London. The press had already
written
Genesis off following the departure of Peter Gabriel and pens were poised
to
condemn them further when it was announced that they'd continue with Phil
Collins
steppin' forward into Gabriel's role. Well, sod the lot of 'em, Genesis
were fantastic
and Collins delivered a kick up their collective asses. Alternating between
frontman
and drums, he was accompanied on a second kit by the Yes' talented Bill
Bruford.
This appetising combination climaxed with an awesome 'Los Endos' - the roar
that
greeted them at the end lifted the friggin' roof off. Memorable and
spirit-lifting.

 Max Myndblown

Snazzy asked about famous people in 60's groups.

1. Jerry Mathers of "Leave it To Beaver" fame was in Beaver & the Trappers.

2. A briefly famous person in a band was Steven Weed. Weed was Patti
Hearst's boyfriend when she was captured by the SLA. I don't remember what
band he was in, though. (Not The Weeds, however.)

Andrea, the Smears did indeed do a cover of "I'm on Your Prey" on their
SMEARS IN THE
GARAGE ep. As a matter of fact, this Smears album was talked about a few
months ago on this
list, mostly in regards to their Billy Childish cover, "Cum into My Mouth."

Thinking of three fave gigs (or even a handful) is pretty hard (to narrow
down), but there are several that stick out in my mind. And I didn't even
start to go to shows much @ all till a year
and half ago! Here 'tis (in no particular order):

1. Las Vegas Grind, Halloween '99. Probably the best time I've ever had
anywhere, anytime. Scores of great bands, cheap drinks, tons of beautiful
girls, and an unbelievable camardie and good
vibes among everyone I met (esp. w/the bompsters). Fave bands: the
Trashmen, Untamed Youth,
the Breadmakers, the Embrooks, Shutdown '66, and the Phantom Surfers.

2. the Eyeliners/the Groovie Ghoulies, San Antonio/Austin, April '99. Two
fun nights of seeing
two great live bands in two different cities. First night was @ Wacky's,
second here @ Emo's. So
great my brother's b-day and the first night of the shows gave me an excuse
to go to San Antonio.

3. ? and the Mysterians, Electric Lounge, Austin, March '99. The same show
Ayssa mentioned
earlier, an amazing and incredibly great show by these unstoppable guys.
The Sons of Hercules also put on a great set opening (the best I've ever
seen them do). A shame this place is now closed. (Also almost met Alyssa
that night, got her offlist e-mail too late, though).

Other honourable mentions (all Austin shows, '98-'99): Thee Headcoats,
Emo's; Girl Trouble, Emo's; the Jewws, 33 Degrees (free show); the
Shakewells @ the Fuzzclub;and Bob Mould @ Liberty Lunch.

As far as most disappointing shows, I'd say the one that let me down the
most was Sonic Youth
@ the now defunct Liberty Lunch last year. I guess it's understandable,
since their equipment had
just recently been stolen.

First show can't remember, but it may have been Aerosmith in Dallas in '88.

I guess I don't want to ask about the secret sauce! This reminds me there
is this place here called
the Ritz, which used to be a movie theatre back in the twenties and thirties
(and probably for years
afterwards). It later became a porno house, and it now is a dance club.
Weird, man!

Zaremba is, so I don't know if he'd want the ones he's not hosting. I spoke
with him earlier this evening about Andrea's tape.

Now WE would be interested. Email me offline about dupe prices and mailing if
it's a possibility for you.
I wouldn't mind having that.

Joe, what are you talking about? this is that other Don Smith in the
DC
scene, right? right?>>>>

Well, I dunno. Actually I was responding to your bit about the A-Bones
(?) and "when's the last time I wrung my shirt out at a show" bit (or
words to that effect). The Woggles draw some perspiration from me
these days, that's for sure....

Are you talking about their October 84 show with Peach of
Immortality/Tony Perkins & the Pyschotics and Vancouver 5/DOA pals
Shanghai Dog opening? I was at that show, but clueless to local shows
in 1983, the 1984 show was my first club show with multiple bands I was
a little winded by the time Husker Du came on.>>>>

Yeah, I think so. What I remember most is some scenester kid came on
stage to sing with the band and forgot all the words the second he got
on stage.

<<<<The Godfathers 1988
my avorite part of their U of MD show was I was trying to get them to
do
a station ID for MUC and they were acting weird and all of the sudden
just formed a tight circle and started urinating into the middle of it
(this was outdoors), basically freaking everyone out and scattering the
fans. they appologized and said they didn't get a dressing room.
They
always did a great live metal/mod version of the beastie boys fight for
your right to party. yes I said "metal/mod.">>>>

Right, and I think they were asked about "S.T.B." and gave some
flippant answer....

Which reminds me I've got some great MUC ID's I should dig up.
Fleshtones, Bongos, etc. I'm an English professor now and when I think
of what "I" was like in my lit classes spending most of my time
planning my noon-3 afternoon shift at MUC, I'm constantly amazed I get
any responses at all from my students....

That was a great evening, was it not? I have never seen so many genuinely
HAPPY people in one place, and the smiles by the guys in the band lit up my
heart, it was so great to see such a HUGE turnout and such support and
admiration for them. And ?...................dancin' & prancin' like nobody's
business. What a hoot.

yep, they had a clarity and energy that has been unmatched of late. They
opened for The New Bomb Turks last Sunday. I think I already illuminated THAT
evening for you.

Did you go to the other show @ The Lounge as well? The Sons opened then as
well, with The Sir Finks, I think, the shows were just a few months apart. Joe
Emery or Scott may remember.

> A shame this place is now closed.

One of the Fastball guys sister ( I think Miles' ,not sure) owns it, and every
other week there's a different rumour on what is to happen. I loved that venue,
away from the 20 or so odd clubs and venues on 6th St. and the flotsam and
jetsam you have to mill through on the way to our particular
hangouts. If Austin had a bridge and tunnel crowd, their destination is
definitely 6th, we would have to call them the Highway and Farm Road crowd.

> (Also almost met Alyssathat night, got her offlist e-mail too late, though).

Yep, ships in the night. Didn't meet until the Swap & Bop, best damn vintage
flea market EVER, with great bands to listen to while bargaining in the bazaars
of some of the grooviest vendors. They should have more than one a year. All
right, nuff thoughts. On to catch up w/more mail. later.

PS........What's got YOU home tonight? No shows, fetes, or my otherwise usual
mayhem of some sort...............Chris gave me bronchitis, so I am fidgety,
feeling odd at home, stir-crazy, but no shows to miss really, friends in Hot
Wheels, Jr playing at Hole in the Wall, but other than that............lucky I
got sick when I did. Good night to be ill.

I don't remember that at all--maybe they played two shows?
