I see someone's already provided info on this. It's one of the few recent Aust
'60s punk comps I actually haven't been involved with, but it's obviously full
of killer stuff. I haven't seen it around yet, but I understand the tracks are
all from master tapes.

PS: The Film & Sound Archives here in Canberra sold off their massive non-
Aussie record collection to the public last weekend. Something like 100,000 45s
& LPs spanning the late '50s to the '80s. There was not ONE solitary good
record in the bunch...

I like "Five Leaves Left" The string arrangements are really pretty. A
newer band called Belle and Sebastian have a similar sound to Nick Drake!

You're telling me! I was surprised at the condition of a lot of the records
too - masking tape on the seams, writing all over them, the vinyl itself
scratched and trashed, but still with $5-$10 price tags! Some archivists
these guys....

never a
bad show. They're always amazing." Well, that night... they weren't.
For
one thing, Gordon was M.I.A. (I yelled out - without thinking of the
pun -
"Hey Peter, where's Gordon?" He had no clue.) And the great Bill
Milhizer
could barely stay on his drum stool. 'Twas not Super Rock at all. >>

Blair, I saw the Fleshtones about a month later in Baltimore, and I can
report that same lameness. In fact, if I remember correctly Gordon
quit the band right around the time you saw that show (I asked Zaremba
about that very issue in August and he seemed to remember October '88
being his last show--though I've since read show reviews from '89 that
mention Gordon, so...). Anyway, Fred Smith was playing bass about as
woodenly as you could imagine, Gordon was gone...wow, I remember
thinking that night that the Fleshtones were hanging on by a thread.
The fact that they are still around playing great, tight shows is, as
we all know, great and amazing.

(BTW at a Bayou show in DC around '86/'87 Gordon stormed off the stage
during a song, walked out the front door, and never came back...).

Hey Blair-
No apology necessary, we weren't just in need of improvement, WE SUCKED! And
that Bethlehem PA. show (from what I can remember, because we drank ourselves
into near blackouts) was even worse. Not a period l'm at all proud of. I
look back on that time and cringe with regret and embarrassment. After that
Bethlehem show, I was never able to look JT in the eye again. That following
morning we were guests on Bill Kelly's show on WFMU and someone called in,
and on the air said, "I saw you guys last night!" And I said, "Yeah?" And
he said, "Yeah... you were frightening!" I'll never forget that. Live and
learn...

Greetings,

I'm going to get "Outta the Nest" by the Vipers!
I remember Carol Taylor playing the hell out of the
Vipers on WNOR FM 99. Eventhough WNOR played mostly
mainstream boring rock, they had a kick ass Punk/
New Wave/60s and 80s Garage Rock Show hosted by Carol
Taylor. She'd played the best music anyone could
ever played. I lived in Ahoskie, NC, but the radio
station was in Norfolk, VA. I heard many local
greats like the Waxing Poetics and the Mockers.
She even played the Bangles when they were actually
post punk and cool. The only time I was irritated
with her is when she made a negative remark about
the Smiths. Morrisey rules!

This is a great list. I'm glad I accidently stumbled
across it. It's bringing back to the days of the
cool radio stations and what not. College radio isn't
what it used to be.

Keep the Garage Loud!

Hi
I just heard a bunch of songs off that gigantic new Stooges box on WFMU. And
they all sounded pretty great. Has anyone bought this monster? Is it worth
going deeper in debt to pick up?

Subject: Fave Gigs

Here's a few of mine...

REM / English Beat / Squeeze - Nassau Coliseum - Long Island (1982)
The first "farewell tour" for Squeeze, and first time I ever saw REM.
Don't recall much about 'em, other than I dug their jangly guitars.
English Beat were fun, and Squeeze were great.

Ramones - My Father's Place - Long Island (1983)
My first Ramones gig, circa Subterranean Jungle. I got a bloody nose
during my first slam-dancing excursion and wore it like a badge of honor.
: - )

The Vipers - The Dive - NYC (1984/85)
Saw 'em a few times at this small joint, which seemed to be the home of
NY garage rock in the mid-80s. Totally blown away by Surprise Surprise,
Cheated & Lied, and the most amazing cover of Shot Down (featuring J.
Weiss on sax).

Hoodoo Gurus - The Ritz - NYC (1986)
Blow Your Cool tour - great show with the most rockinest Aussies at their
peak.

Husker Du - The Ritz - NYC (1987)
The only time I ever saw them, during the Warehouse Songs & Stories tour.
They opened with New Day Rising which was the most powerful rock and
roll sound I'd ever heard.

Dead Kennedys - West Catasaqua Playground Building - Allentown, PA
(1987?)
Lots of fun, tiny place, tons of youngsters, sweaty punk rock, stood
right in front of the band and joined a few other guys in trying to hold
back the masses from pitching onto the band!

The Secret Service - CBGB - NYC (1987/88)
They played a number of shows there, the best of which was probably
11/20/87, while headlining to a full house. Wayne Manor at his most
soulful and probably their best demonstration of power and volume.

Peter Gabriel - Festhalle - Frankfurt, Germany (1992)
An awe-inspiring performance during the Secret World tour, amazing
theater combined with passionate music. Special bonus for my first live
show outside the U.S.

The Montgomery Cliffs - Cafe Tattoo - Baltimore (1997)
After being away from rock & roll clubs for a number of years, this
3-piece band from NY with sharp suits and skinny ties reminded me why
seeing a great live band is one of the most enjoyable experiences one can
have.

Bruce Springsteen - MCI Center - Washington, D.C. (1999)
The first and only time I've seen "The Boss" and he did not disappoint.
3-1/2 hours with a legend...

I would probably have a ton of Mosquitos gigs on my list, but perhaps my
favorite was the first time I saw 'em at Sparks in Huntington (early '83,
I think). I bought a demo tape and snagged a free T-shirt tossed into
the crowd by their manager "Brother Scotto" Savitt. Another favorite was
their record release carnival at Irving Plaza. One memorable gig was a
show they co-headlined with The Vipers at The Ritz in March, 1985. They
played often at Irving Plaza, which was nearly the same size, but this
felt like they had stepped up to the major leagues - too bad they didn't
stay there. : - (

Be seeing you,
Bill
