Well the one the following year at L'Elysée Monmartre in Paris was a
rock'n'roll riot. Gordon had long gone to survey those "DT Shadows" and the
band were being helped out by Andy Shernoff on bass. The atmosphere in the
hall was "party party" with the punters throwing streamers on the stage and
dancing like mad. The 'Tones arrived clutching massive illuminated pumpkin
heads which they then place around the stage. Indeed, Z-man placed one
directly in front of the kick drum and you guessed it, Billy's kit ignited
ten minutes into the set. I shall never forget the look of consternation as
a security man ran onstage and was held back from the blaze by a gleeful Z.
"Burning Hell" indeed. The reason why this show was so damn memorable was
because it was the first Super Rock show I had seen in three years and I was
totally knocked out when they played two songs which I had sent them six
months earlier ("Steam Engine" - the Monkees and "Outcast" - the Animals).
Words cannot convey the emotion I felt as Strengo screamed that old Monkees
nugget. What a night, what a show, and the cheap little hotel with the
blood stains on the bedside table only added to the tawdry ambience of the
affair.

Other fave shows in no particular order:

Barracudas, Milkshakes, Prisoners - Hope'n'Anchor 83-84
Thee Headcoats - The Western Rooms & DWC
The Creation - 90s reunion show at The Garage
Jessie Hector getting onstage with the Clique at The Western Rooms

And a ton of others...

I'm 6600 messages behind. MM tastes like bilgewater, btw. JD tastes like tapwater.
Where do a brother go from there? Everclear? Ugh. VSOP? Yes!

Anyway, the reason why i'm here:

Am looking to trade for copies of Record Collector (UK music zine). Have lots to
trade in return (gee, ya think? http://apollojams.com), and i'm hoping someone
will bite the bait so i can bone up on my studies. Am hip deep in the 2nd and 3rd
level Merseybeat stuff these days. Hey, didja know there was a UK
label-orchestrated Mersey "revival" attempt in early 1965, as things started to
slow down before the next big wave? As Research into the Unknown goes, it's some
fascinating shit. Finding the music is a bitch tho, but i gots all three volumes
of the Jap. PRT label's "British Beat Anthology" cd's to keep me warm, for now.
Unfortunately, i'm finding a LOT of stuff not compiled yet (?) that i'd like to
hear. Whether it sucks or not is immaterial. Ultimately, i'll be the judge, capish?

>From here, i go on to the "Rubble" series, but that's a period & a post for
another time.

You gots "Record Collector" zine, fanboy? Hook me up. Don't TELL me i was the only
one who actually subscribed to it during the 80's! Damn. So far, the ONLY zines
i've found who get hip-deep in this shit are "The Rock Marketplace" and "Record
Collector". Has anyone picked up the torch, however faintly it's burning?

Actually, this has been designed before, around 1982 or so if memory
serves. It was based on the linear tracking turntables that were also
popular around that time, most of which used laser sensors for tracking --
my Technics linear tracking turntable randomly won't play 7" records. More
importantly though, it doesn't work to $56,000 standards.

If laser optics are employed, the laser will be defracted by any dirt
particle in the record, thereby decreasing quality. To get peak
performance from this turntable then, you'd literally need a clean room,
and I don't just mean you've picked up your paisley shirts up off the
floor. Then again, I guess if you can afford a $56,000 turntable, you can
afford to transform part of your 3 car garage into a clean room.

Moving into the infra-red area may be better for this, as it would pierce
dirt particles. Still, to get that right, somebody would have to do some
heavy studies on what kind of dirt particles are commonly found in records
(no doubt taking nicotine, dandruff and pot resin into account).

I also remember being at the San Francisco MOMA a few years back and seeing
an exhibit of home made turntables. One of them was laser driven (playing
some old German marches 78 I recall) where the laser was beamed through a
syringe about 4 inches over the record. The sound quality was far less
than stellar.

I'm perfectly happy with my Technics 1200, but if there's money burning
holes in your pockets, I bet you'll get better sound quality out of
something in the $1-3000 range.

it has the entire 1-2-3-4 ep on it (lipstick on your collar, river deep

just kills. (although this comp doesn't have LIES)

I don't know if this is true for every single one of these things, but my
copy of this boot cuts out a second or two of the opening track on each
side. I'm sure some people wouldn't care, but I think it sucks. Also, the
labels look as if somebody re-drew the Harvest logo with a magic
marker....crappy. I should have known better, I've vowed to stay away from
reissues that boast of "added bonus tracks" and it's incorporated into the
original artwork (The Get Back! Label being an exception). I've seen the
Saints record advertised as "semi-legit" but I'm positive it's as boot as
they come. My recommendation is to stay away unless you don't have these
songs in any other format.
While we're on the subject of reissues and boots, does anybody know what the
deal is with Get Back! Records? They seem to have licensed a zillion
classic punk and psych records. I've scoured the net for a label
discography and have come up empty handed. Anybody have any info? Are they
completely on the up and up?

this was a great show, and i saw many other great shows there, but i say
good riddance to the elec lounge. the layout of that club was great, but i
can't begin to relate all the nightmares i had both playing that club and
attending shows there.

more often than not they'd charge more at the door than they advertised.
they paid bands embarrassingly little money (one time we filled in an
unadvertised show as a favor to the club and got some friends from san
antonio to drive up and play w/ us and they tried to pay them $20!). i also
saw them turn the PA off on bands at the end of the night to make them get
offstage, and once almost got into a fistfight w/ a soundman onstage (when
we were actually playing a benefit!).

funniest thing when they had the big fire there that kept the place closed
for 4 months -- the fire was caused by a short in one of the refrigerators.
other guitarist in my band pointed out the irony: "that's funny -- i can't
remember ordering a beer there that wasn't lukewarm as soon as they handed
it to me."

things at that club got to the point where most of the cool bands in austin
wouldn't play there, and sadly, when cool bands did there were so many
people who absolutely refused to go there the bands would be playing to an
empty house.

Oh my gosh!
The Glass Opening are boys? That's hilarious!
Although I like the idea of them being chicks better...I know it's "Keep it
up now GIRL, I'm on your prey" but that actually made perfect sense...I
always thought the singer was after some other girl's conquest, ya know, a
better look out chicky'cause I'm gonna git'im kind of thing. Oh well...but
thanks for letting us know, and also thanks for the info about
Denise'n'Co...it's such a great song and it's best to know the real story.
I'm really sad that the Glass Opening aren't girls! Darn it!
Bye for now,
Erin

I bit the bullet last week & ordered it. Gonna have to avoid the landlord
for the next few weeks as with shipping to Australia it came to $160. That's
about $240 Australian. Compare that to the $80-90 Australian the Nuggets box
set me back. Ouch. But it is the Stooges we're talking about & one of my all
time fave albums. 7 hours worth of a 36 minute LP. Should be interesting....

I'm really happy that my older brother took me to see Kiss in San
Antonio during their "Destroyer" tour even though I was just a wee 'un.
That was my first rock show and an impressionable one at that. I can't
remember but I think The Plasmatics may have opened.
A good show is any show where Iggy takes off his pants, which is just
about all of 'em right?
I saw Nirvana's first show at COCA in Seattle, not that anyone cares. I
didn't pay them much attention at the time, definitely didn't think they'd
end up where they did.
I was lucky to see one of the last show's Roy Orbison played just a
month or so before he died. Now I always try and see the old legends when I
can, just in case it's their last performance.
I went to an Elvis show in Texas but didn't actually see it because I
was still in my mom's womb at the time.

Evan,

I believe the Compulsive Gambler's first album "My Gamblin' Days Are Over"
(Sympathy) may be out of print but you should definitely try and lay your
hands on a copy. I like it better than their new album, many hard rock
influences throughout.-vic

now there is a thread....my band opened for the Original Sins in a now

got paid in food and bar, which they learned was a mistake, but they shorted
the Sins by $100 bucks than what was offered cause the owner decided he

Agree with Peter as well. I remember reading about this technology via
newsletter outta Japan about 3 or 4years ago. The reason the price was
outrageous was that the creators couldn't get a company interested enough to
invest into it. I finally got to see it at an audio tech convention in
Vegas 2 years ago. It was pretty amazing but received little if any interest
from anyone there. They demo'd it with records that were wrecked minus
condition and they played beautifully although I was told back then that the
sound that was delivered was digital quality, so it did sound a bit tinty
(like CD's sometimes do).
It would be hilarious if such a thing caught on and were mass produced,
suddenly all record lists would'nt have to list condition because they all
would play mint.
Weird thought.
Oh, one thing, the laser arm was stiff and could not be easily moved.
