>flies---hope it wasn't something i said...

First off, I don't appreciate your tone, mister!

Just kidding.

The tan gent with a tangent is here, just not posting as much. Yes, the
King's English are indeed Richard Ward and Company (the company being Jason
Alley, Robby Poore, Brian Poust and that...other fellow) headed to Missouri
and I oughta know, I woik wit dese guys!

I have been unusually silent, because of work and also, for the last week of
January, I was out of town. I went to the Sundance Film Festival (I saw
Danny DeVito, John Lydon and Roger Ebert and that was just the first
screening I went to!). Also (*warning* non-Bomp content!), there was a
concert I went to for a friend of my wife's and mine, Glenn Horiuchi.

He is a musician. He plays piano and shamisen (it looks like a
three-stringed banjo but plays like a shamisen). The concert consisted of
Jazz, Avant-Garde music and one classic Japanese piece (this featured a
dancer!). With the exception of the vintage piece, all of the compositions
were his own. Almost all of the songs had political tendencies, as he was
instrumental in the Redress and Reparation Movement for the
Japanese-Americans interred in U.S. concentration camps. His music is
challenging, daring and thought-provoking (who else would juxtapose
shamisen, saxophone and tuba?). One piece starts out with him plucking the
strings of the piano and he even yelled at the piano (if you hold the loud
pedal down, the strings resonate). It was quite a show.

It was made further resonant by the fact that Glenn is in stage four of
cancer (ironically, he is the same age as my brother and suffering from the
same disease that killed my father). It was uncertain whether he was going
to show up to the concert, let alone play, but he summoned up the strength
to do it and he was great. I have most of his albums (he has about 10,
within the space of 11 years!) and I am a tad ashamed to say that this is
the first time I have seen him play live, but I am glad we did.

After long, good political fights, great music and just being a nice guy
with a wife and son, due to a combination of machismo and horrible
misdiagnoses by his HMO, he gets to suffer from a malady that robs him of
his strength and brings him pain.

During the concert, if you had just walked in, you wouldn't have known it,
except for his saying that he was tired on occasion. He has a great sense
of humor (and a LOUD laugh) and we listened and laughed (in between songs,
we laughed at his COMMENTS) with him.

One thing that he said that night sticks with me. In a Los Angeles Times
blurb, it mentioned that Glenn Horiuchi is going to be at his benefit
concert and you should see him because he is a great musician and he is a
terminal patient. Glenn said, "Well...we're ALL terminal!"

That's something to think about.

I don't think The Wards resubscribed to Bomp after their Winter Holidays.
However, the King's English is indeed fronted by Richard. Fellow bompers
Brian Phillips, Robby Poore and Brian Poust are also in the groop. They

Are the Conquerors playing through the midwest or is
this just an isolated show?

I once saw them listed as playing here in Chicago in
some particularly random hole in the wall. So, I
treked through the icy rain, showed up 2 hours early
(the ad was wrong), waited and then found out that it
was the wrong band. Same name, but a local rockabilly
band that didn't do their homework when forming a few
months earlier. They were OK but it was still such a
disappointment. I told them but I don't think they've
changed their name because I've seen them listed
since.
Has something like this happened to anyone else?
Apparently, I was the only fool that made that mistake
that night.

almost got excited about the Ugly Ducklings until I

Hey Billy thanks for helping me make a decision. Last ngth I saw that
Rockjit Scientist had the boot in question for $17 but now I don't think
it's worth it even though I prefer vinyl to cd. I'll get that in some form
other than my cassette some day.

And Lee, yes please do show us the Get Back discography if it's no trouble.
And make sure Dean gets in at least 3 copies of the Menace one at Soapbox.
One for me, one for him and one for Masayo.

I dunno how I got this but can anyone help. Has anyone heard of a record by "Thee Wytches" from Salem, MA? I was doing research a couple of years ago on Teddy and The Pandas and thought "Thee Wytches" may have opened for Teddy at the Salem Amory. They may have had a single that received air play on WMEX.

Thanks
Mark

The following is the e-mail I recieved.

"My name is Stan Morrow and I have been informed that you are a collector and
expert on 60's bands, especially obscure "garage" type groups. I have an
inquiry for you concerning a band I believe were called "Thee Wytches".

Recently I bought an old dilapidated house in Salem Ma. While renovating the
attic, I came across a collection of reel to reel tapes and some notebooks.
I believe the notebooks were engineers notes and some lyric sheets for "Thee
Wytches" and are dated 1966, 1969 & 1970. Out of curiosity I took these
items to my brother who happened to have a working reel to reel machine in
operational condition. We were surprised to find a rather sophisticated
sounding production that seemed to be more than home recordings. There are
three separate albums worth of music here but I have never heard any of this
stuff on the radio. I'm wondering if this band recorded under an assumed
name and may be someone famous. From the notes I've seen, the band members
names are not familiar to me, but I'm not an expert in music.

I've included a copy of the cassette for you to examine, as well as a copy
of some of the pages from the notebook. The band members were Eric Mars and
Ray Bates on guitars, Jeff Coogan on bass and Jason Howard on drums. No
vocal credits were listed. If you look on the copy of page 3 you'll notice
that "All songs by Mars & Bates, copyright 1966" is noted. I think the album
was either called "Hitsville" or "Brew" depending on where you look.

Most of the second and third reels have been damaged by mildew over the
years, and I'm taking the extra step of having them repaired in case they
are worth something.

Please get back to me when you can. I'm curious to find out any information
you may have. Please do not post my address on your website because I really
don't know any more than what I've told you.

Sincerely
Stan Morrow

No apology necessary, as it turns out; I was just about to e-mail you
privately to tell you that the message with that discography bounced because
it was too big! Also, it looks like the tabular formatting got a little
messed up, so even if it went through it wouldn't have been that easy to
read.

Maybe you could post it somewhere on the Dead Flowers site (or elsewhere on
the web) so that people who want to see it can take a look...? Even if it
were shorter I don't think it would look too good in e-mail.

Thee Headcoatees "The Sisters Of Suave" (Damaged Goods)

Thee Headcoatees have broken up and left us with this final collection of
A and B sides. Nothing mind blowing but this is definitely among their best
stuff. Right up there with "Punk Girls" and "Girlsville" and WAY better than
the last album. There are some lagging moments but overall this comp is
pretty damn fluid. There is an excellent cover of The Ramones' "Swallow My
Pride" and the Childish originals of "I'm Happy", "Evil Thing", and the
outrageous "Come Into My Mouth" (a play on an old Mighty Caesars song "Come
Into My Life") are all top notch. It is worth the buy if you got extra cash
to spare after getting your most important record needs taken care of first.

My pleasure Squeaky. As somebody else said, the Know Your Product comp is
great. There are different versions of some of the songs than appear on the
US release of Eternally Yours, so I would suggest hunting down a vinyl copy
to go along with the CD comp. I think the comp also deletes one or two
songs from I'm Stranded, which is a bummer. Nonetheless it is the best
collection of theirs I've seen short of the LP boxset that came out in the
late 80's/early 90's. But then you had to deal with all their later crap.
Ugghh.

Please tell us if this is a reality, or email me offlist if you get confirmation, for some gals & I wanted to use that name, as we are sorta witchy (think, Good Witchery, not bad), as a side project moniker for some time now..

It's not like names haven't been utilized and recycled again for modern bands before (Charlatans, Cynics, etc), but still, I've always thought it sort of tacky, espcially when the band name you take is even semi-prominent in the genre you love. Some disagree, saying it's "honoring"those that have gone
before...........whatever.

I dunno, it's sort of like the habit of garagesters changing last names constantly. This I really don't give a rat's ass about, it's such a prolific practice, but I wonder, DOES this irritate anyone? And will anyone who thinks so, SAY so............Wondering. Where's Murray's I-don't-give-a damn-what

Mark:
Please tell us if this is a reality, or email me offlist if you get
confirmation, for some gals & I wanted to use that name, as we are sorta
witchy (think, Good Witchery, not bad), as a side project moniker for
some time now..

It's not like names haven't been utilized and recycled again for modern
bands before (Charlatans, Cynics, etc), but still, I've always thought
it sort of tacky, espcially when the band name you take is even
semi-prominent in the genre you love. Some disagree, saying it's
"honoring"those that have gone
before...........whatever.

I dunno, it's sort of like the habit of garagesters changing last names
constantly. This I really don't give a rat's ass about, it's such a
prolific practice, but I wonder, DOES this irritate anyone? And will
anyone who thinks so, SAY so............Wondering. Where's Murray's
I-don't-give-a damn-what
anyone-thinks sass when I need it?

'jes my opinions,

I love this kind of stuff (tough vocal group R&B from the 50's)- I have tons
of it. The problem is that if you like it, then I can recommend over 500 more
CD's/Lp's for you to buy. Then you can start buying 60's soul after
that........I strongly recommend the really gritty Little Charlie & The
Sidewinders on Soul-Tay-Shus and the Andre Williams 60's stuff on
Soul-Tay-Shus (both are available on LP!) They were just released.
Stay away unless you want to go broke. Stick to only one music style, and
master that one so you can call yourself an expert.

I would recommend it because you probably don't have anything else like this
in your collection. Jackie's crying, begging, and pleading are very intense.
But there is so much more. I was kidding about the sticking to one style,
