Hi everyone

My name's Neal and I'm back on this list after
finishing uni. In the meantime I have set up a email
mailing list called Pop On Top which deals with
Australian power pop, garage and punk rock bands. If
anyone is interested then they can simply email me. I
also have set up a webpage at

http://www.zip.com.au/~danny/popontop/

however it is still under construction. Hopefully the
reviews will be up soon. I have also set up a page at
MP3.com with some cool downloads if anyone
isinterested;

Hi everybody:

My name's gary apollo, see it says here on my name tag,
and i'm back on this list after finishing my g.e.d.

In the meantime, I've set up uh (sic) email mailing list
called Bands That Never Networked which deals with groups
that ignorantly called themselves the Viscounts, the Others,
the Boys, the Interns, the Mark I thru Five...you know, bands
who ain't got a clue. Where are the damn lawyers when you need
em to figure out who's who?

Actually, i have issues with: the Scientists,
the Sunnyboys, Marv Benton, the Valentines (not the UK group),
the Atlantics, Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs, the Cherokees, the
In-Sect (great name or what!), the Mising Links, Daddy Cool,
the Spinning Wheels, (the) Throb, MPD Ltd. (as opposed to UN-
limited), how rebellious Larry was without being part of "Larry
& the Rebels"), anything on "Kicks Volume 1" or the "Ugly Things"
series, the Saints, the Church, why Split Enz had the BEST hair-dos
for only a coupla albums, why anyone would give a FUCK about
Richard Davies, why bands like the Hoodoo Gurus & the Lime Spiders
made conscious decisions to suck upon signing to major labels....

OK. Weary of being a smartass. If this mailing list of yours is
more than just you and me kibbitzing, lemme know and i'll join.

monday i got friday on my mind,

I'm late catching up on posts, but…

This happened - wish I coulda been there! It was December '68. I found this whilst surfing an awesome VU site - www.members.aol.com/olanden/vu.html

"Live, at this time, the band was incredible. They were super-tight, confident, very powerful, and loads of fun! One night the MC5 opened for The Velvets; this was when the 5 were at the height of their politically active period and they were accompanied into town by a whole troup of leather-clad White Panther crazies and a raving MC who after their dynamite set exhorted the audience to tear down the hall because it was not large enough to hold their energies and take to the streets. When The Velvets came on, Lou spoke first to everyone present, saying, 'I'd just like to make one thing clear. We have nothing to do with what went on earlier and in fact we consider it very stupid. This is our favorite place to play in the whole country and we would hate to see anyone even try to destroy it!' The Detroit contingent was stunned by this remark and the thunderous applause that followed it.

The Velvets played especially well that night..." Rob Norris, Kicks Magazine, 1979

And here's a stroll down memory lane for you, fbrandon: www.trussel.com/f_mel.htm

I know JJ Rassler moved to Boston from Philly in the early 70s, but I think we're the senior citizens of the Boston contingent

i never saw the MC5 at the tea party---but lou did tell me he loved playing
the place (as much as lou loved anything back then)---is lynn the only other
boston bomper who goes back that far---L-do you remember the MC5 playing a
show there?---if so, it would've been 70 or so--i do remember seeing a copy
of their Live at the Grande Ballroom EP in the WBCN studios (wish I had it),
but Stephen the Seagull would only play the "brothers and sisters" version
of kick out the jams on the air...

Frank Black And The Catholics "Pistolero" (SpinArt)

First off, I would strongly suggest that no one who reads this purchase
anything else from SPinArt. Having said this, I am very impressed with this
album. Frankie has abandoned his old "alternative" (whatever that means)
sound for a rougher more rock type sound. The song writing is pretty damn
good too. The album drags a bit at times; but great songs like "Bad Harmony",
"I Think I'm Starting To Lose It", and the genius "I Want Rock And Roll" make
it all worthwhile. There are also plenty of "almost as good" songs with only
one or two so so tunes. Grade: A minus

(Disclaimer: This review has an eccentric weakness for almost everything
Frank Black.)

Thanks, Greg, for the info regarding Beachwood Sparks and Smallstone. I am really looking forward to getting my hands on those albums.
Last time I saw Smallstone was at the Purple Onion up here in SF - they played with Twink.
They should be stoked to have Jeff Davies as their new guitarist. The BJM's loss is Smallstone's gain, I guess. There's a band called Dura Delinquent you all should check out if you can - they've gotten very early 70s Stonesy lately but still have their Iggy-inspired stage antics and trashy rock n' rollage going on. Dig.

Hey Frank, and everybody:

Yeh, i'm back for a bit. Am in this "staying-up-all-nite with a bottle of
Jack and researching UK obscur-o pop bands 1963-66" mode. Actually, i've
got a few questions for y'all coming up in a later post.

Love to "shake em up", but don't confuse my sarcasm with "nastiness".
Just like to get half-in-the-bag and do my "homework" and scan Bomp posts
when i'm stuck on a group or record.

Fucking weird how you don't have to explain that to fellow New Yorkers
(I'm in Cali now, talk about "eggshells", christ!).

I've been all over the place lately from 60's soul artists like Geraldine
Hunt on Calla, to 70's funk like Willie Hutch's post-Motown output to
early 70's jazz like Freddie Hubbard on Blue Note to early 80's new wave
like Holly & the Italians (prod. by Richard Gottherer! Never knew that!)
to the aforementioned Liverpool/London beat scene.

Whither ElleOhElleLay? Dunno, write her. Or i will. Is Jane Fondle still
around? Who else is awol?

Subject: Viscounts, Others & Mickey Finn

Hi, guys:

Coupla questions:

Mickey Finn and the Bluemen: "I Still Want You" (Oriole (UK) 7" 1940)
Mickey Finn: "Night Comes Down" (World Artists (U.S.) 7" 1048)
Mickey Finn: of T.Rex

All the same guy?
Ya got release dates or years on the first two?
I'm *guessing* 1965 and 1969, respectively. The latter date since he
joined Bolan inbetween 7/69 ("King of the Rumbling Spires" & 1/70 ("By
the Light of the Magical Moon").
Any OTHER Mickey Finn (the T.Rex one) solo records?
For that matter, any other Mickey Finn's??

- ----------------------

The Others:

A NY (?) group who did "Can't Stand This Love, Goodbye" (RCA, 10/65)
and "First Time I Saw You (RCA, 2/66).

Then there's this OTHER Others (sheesh....) from Pennsylvania who did
"My Friend the Wizard" (reissued on "New England Teen Scene V.2).

Same band, different groups? I won't mention there's a THIRD "Others"
who did "Oh Yeah" on Fontana (reissued on the 2-LP "Beat Merchants" set).
Whoops, i guess i just did.....

- ----------------------

The Viscounts:

A group who did "Harlem Nocturne" on Madison, 1960.

Another (?) group who did "Journey to Infinity" on Teen Times, 1965
(reissued on the "Surfin' in the Midwest" compilation).

ANOTHER group who did "Where Did You Belong" on UK Columbia, 1964
(reissued on the Charly compilation "60's Lost & Found V. 3).

Three separate groups????

Thanx in advance.

Nope, all different guys. Night comes down Mickey Finn is Mick Waller who
played guitar on Steve Marriott's awful solo album.
