Subject: RE: Dean Carter & the Lemon Pipers

Dean Carter was from Danville, Illinois, not Chicago - he made 3 45's for
the labels owned by Arlen Miller (Milky Way; Tell International). "Run
Rabbit Run" is a good rocker from '66; followed by the 2-sider "Rebel Woman"
/ Jailhouse Rock" in '67. Both are on the Milky Way label. "Mary Sue" is
another rocker which came out on Tell International.
Dean may have made a couple more singles prior to these, I don't have any
details.

As for the Lemon Pipers, "Quiet Please" was their first 45, but the Carol
label 45 wasn't released until after "Green Tamborine was moving way up the
Billboard charts in January 1968. "Quiet Please" first appeared on the Dana
Lyn label based in Cincy, OH in the summer of 1967. It is the same version
as the Carol release.

Subject: NW 60s: `66 Showdown! The Redcoats VS The Gamblers

In the early part of 1966, having just turned 16 I started hitting the
teen clubs on a regular basis. This got turned up a couple notches when
I hooked up with a fashion conscious freshman named Cathy from Cleveland
High at The Headless Horseman. In June we went to The Teen Fair in the
underground bunker-like convention hall at the Portland OR Memorial
Coliseum. 3 stages, films like 'Endless Summer', dance contests (which
we placed 3rd in & won boots from Mier & Frank, Go-Go for her, Beatle
Boots for me) and a ton of bands, most of 'em playing for the exposure.
Jim Valley had left Don & The Goodtimes for the Raiders after recording
Blue Turns To Grey in January so the town was wide open. Into this void
stepped The Redcoats, an all-star (mostly) garage band made up of
(Gentleman) Jim Dunlap vocals & Larry Roberts bass of Gentleman Jim &
The Horsemen (one of the house bands at the Horseman), Dave Maitland a
Drake Levin-like lead guitarist from Mr. Lucky & The Gamblers, Doug
Morrison on Hammond organ, and surprise surprise my Wilson High
classmate Pat Primiano on drums! Now nobody had any idea Pat played but
he turned out to be a wonderful, showy, noisy, rim-shot happy drummer
who, if memory serves, reminded me something of Bob Bennett or maybe
Dave Clark. They debuted as co-headliners (along with The Midnight Sons
who had just released 'Draft Time Blues') of the fair and were loud,
gritty & showy doing a NW spin on the (then) new Brit-Invasion style. A
Raiders stage act meets The Zombies, Spencer Davis & The Animals, hence
the Redcoat gimmick. The kids loved 'em. They never had to work their
way up the local ladder... they started at the top headlining the large
halls & regularly selling out the Horseman. Along with Mr. Lucky & The
Gamblers, they owned the town. We believed in them.
So how good were they? Real fucking good.
Until some 45s turn up the closest point of comparison would be the Mr
Lucky & The Gamblers 45 Take A Look At Me/I Told You Once Before. The
latter features (I'm pretty sure) Dave Maitland's wonderful Colin
Blunstone-like voice. Having him in The Redcoats gave the band a
devastating one-two vocal punch, something no other area band had at the
time. Just when you were getting into Dunlap's Eric Burden-isms on Gimme
Some Lovin', Gin House Blues or some other chestnut of the day, up would
step Maitland with I Must Move or Tell Her No. They could harmonize, and
they had originals, although time has blurred my memory on this.
Sometime later in the year drummer Pat P. came up to me in school and
proudly told me that they had a recording contract. This is borne out by
Don Rogers in 'Dance Halls Armories & Teen Fairs': "The winter of 1966
saw the group signing with Dunhill Records. The label released several
singles by the group, but all failed to make the charts". The 1st single
was called 'Where Do We Go From Here' (an original?) w/the lyrics "Well,
you've got to move to the left & right, You gotta hitch-hike baby
hitch-hike" Timeless teen bullshit... promoted endlessly by them from
the stage. No local Jerden release. Impossible to find in Portland.
Hell, impossible to find, period, which makes little sense since the
road to Dunhill (ala The Goodtimes & The Gamblers) went through Jerden,
who leased to them. The only thing that I can think of is that Maitland
or whoever was running the show knew someone at Dunhill from The
Gamblers association with them & decided to bypass Jerden, counting on
Dunhill to push the record, which thy never did. Big mistake. Jerden
would have put the record on every station & in every store in the area,
thus giving it a chance to break out. Which is why nobody but a few NW
garage-niks remember them, and we are all the poorer.
Next: Rehearsals & the Dec. 3rd 1966 Loser Gets Their Heads Shaved On
Stage showdown with Mr. Lucky & The Gamblers at The Wooden Shoe! (No,
I'm not making this shit up).

Dwarves Offer Help to George W. Bush on the Road to the White House

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- In the wake of Hillary Rodham Clinton's
decision to use Billy Joel's ''Captain Jack'' as her campaign theme song,
the well-loved punk band The Dwarves submitted their song, ''River City
Rapist,'' to George W. Bush's bid for the Presidency.

Blag Dahlia of the Dwarves stated, ''The first lady's decision to adopt a
song depicting drug use and masturbation is an exciting step in the
direction of honest politics. We feel as musicians and poets that 'River
City Rapist' is a perfect fit for the Bush campaign.''

While the Dwarves did not write the piece with Bush in mind, they do feel
that the line: ''I'm the River City Rapist! I'm gonna rape the USA!'' fits
the tone of the Bush campaign perfectly.

The Dwarves, whose album ''The Dwarves Come Clean'' will be released by
Epitaph on March 7, will donate use of the song for the duration of Bush's
march to the Presidency.

Fortunately, I've seen so many great shows that I find it really hard to just
name a few...
Here are some of my fave highlites:
1. CRAMPS at PRIVATES in NYC (right around when Psychedelic Jungle came out):
Me and a girlfriend were tripping, and the Cramps were slower than usual
(as the / Jungle stuff is) and the light show was great (or APPEARED to
be!)...Never heard
    'em sound so great!
2. DEAD BOYS at CBGB (around '77 I believe)...I'd never heard of 'em! I went
to see the
Dictators, and the Boys opened. They actually SCARED me! Most "in your
face"
Rock & Roll I ever saw! Stiv fell into my lap!
3. FUZZTONES at NEUROCK FESTIVAL, BELGIUM (Summer 1987): A giant festival
featuring lotsa big names like the Mission I believe. The Meteors were
late and
The Fuzztones had to go on in their place....even though about 10,000
people were
glad they did, about 7 really nasty skins up front harrased the band
throughout
the set: throwing beer bottles, lit cigarretes, etc. Finally Rudi
Protrudi took a
flying leap off the stage, feet first, into the biggest skinheads'
face!!!! I've been a
    Fuzztones fan ever since!
4. IGGY POP at PEPPERMINT LOUNGE (NYC, maybe 1980?): During his set, Ig made
the
club owner pay him cash on stage! Then he threw it at the audience (he
had
thrown a mic stand a little earlier...I was sure he was gonna kill
someone!)
At the end of the show, the band left the stage and only Ig remained. He
stripped
completely nude, and strutted that giant weapon (no, not the mic stand!)
around
for about 5 minutes, sneering at the audience the whole time!

    GOD BLESS ROCK & ROLL!

while they were moonlighting during their Specialty days as the
Upsetters on the Little Star label. It has recently been comped on

Thanks Alyssa-
I appreciate you taking the time to explain most acccurately some of the
hurdles and obstacles that present itself when 'disinterring' some of these
legends, in an effort to get them back on stage the 'logistics' can be
fiendish.. Even some of the new bands can be a challenge. I also really
appreciate everyones suggestions and interest in who's gonna' play, and hope
you will all keep those ideas coming. If it wasn't for some of the outside
suggestions I've gotten in the past, like those that come from Blair
Buscareno, some of the bills might've been less than interesting. Btw, any
contact numbers that come with these suggestions are always very helpful.

The Shaggs are not possible (already tried) and The Shangri-las are a great

and it turns out he also works with Suzi Quatro! Apparently, The Pleasure

Subject: Gents/Best

Received a strange record in the mail yesterday. The cover says "The Gents:
'We Gotta Get Outa [sic] This Place'", but on the A-side there's a band
called the Best, while the Gents can be found on the B-side. The album is
released on RPC Records from Camden, New Jersey. And that's it! Absolutely
no info on the sleeve.
So who are these guys, and what's the story behind this release?
Are these Gents the same who did "If You Don't Come Back" on T. Shutdown 4?
Doesn't sound like it.
And by the way: the sound quality is awful.

So, can anyone enlighten me?
