Subject: Astroslut at Sci-Fi festival

This will be showing up in the next issue of White Trash Music, but I
figured I'd share it with the Bomp readers because at the rate that my
zines come out, it may be 2016 by the time it gets published:

I made it to the 25th annual 24 hour sci-fi festival at the Coolidge
Corner Theater in Brookline, MA. I lasted for 15 and 1/2 hours and made
it through Death Race 2000, one of the greatest films of all time and
maybe Stallone's best. I also witnessed Astroslut's performance. I
thought they played an excellent set. You had to be right up front to
get a good sound mix. The back of the theater gets muddy sound because
of the balcony. They even had go-go girls on scaffolding, albeit loose
and unsteady scaffolding, about 15 feet high. Lots of people in the
front were taking videos of Jane Fondle's voluptuous body. Some of the
people in the back didn't seem to get the gist of what was going on, but
that was OK. There wasn't many that couldn't relate to a six foot tall
redheaded amazon woman oozing sexual tension. She really needs to make
her own movie, or at least a band video. I hope she sold a lot of stuff
and made some new fans. I don't know how they'd fare with a garage band,
as they're music is very lounge and jazz fusion influenced (Did I say
her band is phenomenal?), but they're definitely have some subtle
influences in rock and new wave. I'd be kind of scared to open a show
for her cuz this band has their act down very soild. They especially
have a heavy Blondie influence. This is the stuff Debbie Harry should
have been playing after Eat to the Beat came out. They are one of the
few bands out there that I see using a Moog synthesizer onstage. So
hat's off to White Trash Music's rock babe for the end of the millenium,
one of the easiest choices I ever had to make. Catch them if you can and
tell them MJ sent you.

For me growing up in southeastern Wisconsin in the mid-Sixties it was WLS
in Chicago (and later it's lesser-powered counterpart WCFL). You had
megawattage firepower, great variety, some famous jocks (Ron Riley, Art
Roberts, et al) and support for the local bands (Shadows of Night, New

If I read you correctly I think I gotta disagree. I think the number of
folks/kids/whoever with the moxie to seek out the less obvious alternatives
to the mainstream broadcast (or netcast) drivel are still a tiny minority.
Doesn't that almost require that you consider these alternative sources the
"true underground?"

Hey, this is a great tool, Gary. I've been relying on the Saturn V
Featuring Orbit site's list for a while, and have cobbled together my own
cheat sheet (not yet posted on the RRR web page) to the same end. But the
apollojams radio links are lookin' real good and useful too. We appreciate
Radio Rumpus Room being included BTW -- we're in great company there.

Ha -- last summer I was visiting relatives in St. Louis during the Gateway

Machine for two hours. I had the phone at the ready to give'em a call but
was stymied 'cause kopper & co. never passed out the studio number.

How about this one? I haven't tried the live feed for a while, but they
have a killer listing of archived shows... try guest hosts Zippy Caplan of
the Litter, the Chesterfield Kings with Mark Lindsay, interviews with Jerry
Miller of Moby Grape, etc.

RealAudio like this is the way to go, I think. You got the convenience, you
got the universality of the software.

I really dig the www.reelradio.com '60s airchecks -- it's a tremendous
source, and the personality of a lot of the jocks is undeniable. It truly
freaks me out that we can tune this stuff in 35 years after the fact!
Jeezuz, it's like being some space critter pulling in these old radio waves
from out past Aldeberan! I do think though that in the glow of nostalgia
it's easy to gloss over the constant and overriding COMMERCIALISM of these
vintage radio shows. If the netcast shows truncated songs, or stepped on
the heads and tails of them like the "boss jocks" did I know I'd switch to
another station -- or URL. That's not to say the folks putting out today's
community/college/netcast garage/psych/surf shows don't have something to
learn, presentation-wise. I listen to a lot of this radio (some netcast,
and some airchecks off cassettes) and while I hear a lot of terrific
setlists I'm not hearing much in the way of interesting patter -- a lot of
it is pretty dry. Personal prejudice here: 35-40 minutes of unbroken music
doesn't necessarily the optimum listening experience make either. Between
Jean and myself on Radio Rumpus Room we've made some headway in regard to
'tween sets chatter, but it's not all that easy to get it right. You gotta
balance out the time for tunes with the time for yakkin', and know when to
cut the mic before you've crossed over into blathering self-indulgence.
Personally, I see these shows as much as a resource as temporal
entertainment, so we tilt toward livening it up with information, but
staying away from the deadening, encyclopedic sort. But the MAIN thing, and
where you can hardly go wrong if you're a programmer/jock on one of these
shows -- YOU GOTTA LET YOUR ENTHUSIASM SHOW! Your love of this noise has
gotta be OBVIOUS to the folks who are listening. It's gotta flow and be
part and parcel of the tunes or all you've got when all is said and done is
a nice mixtape. And as Gary has indicated, great radio is so much more than
that.

Ron

Deke is probably the most talented performer I have ever had the privilege
to see live and 2 feet away... I was right up at the front of the stage (my
ususal spot, right next to Blair, right in front, stage right) and close
enough to watch those fingers fly! The highlights of the show were "peroxide
blond" and "my name is Deke" although I thought all of the material was
great. For their second encore, they did a tribute to Deke's 2nd guitarist,
Bobby Horton - a version of Gloria only subtituting B-o-b-b-y for gloria!
Even their goofy takes were fantastic. I also loved when Deke (resplendant
in old fringed western shirt with pearl buttons - grand ol opry style) Plus,
they kept cracking the worst jokes... It was a fantastic show - amazing
musicianship, great material, and really charismatic performances all
'round. If they come to your town - you gotta see 'em!!!!

I agree, they are great but the price is way too high. I think they made a

Kind of a similar thing to the reissue of the Slaves 45's years back. Tony
