Subject: Limited Edition Comps SUCK

Those who posted about the high prices of limited edition comps are right
on. I can offer the following observations, since I am involved in
compiling and/or providing information for various garage "comps"...

Although I don't buy every comp like I used to in the glory days back in the
80's, I try to keep up with all of the goings-on and releases. Limited
Edition comps were common in the 80's, featuring 45's sourced from cassette
tapes. Only a few were worth your hard earned bucks back then (some of
note: both 'Off The Wall' comps by collector Jim Atwood, and the 'Nightmares
from the Underworld' - Canadian garage set by Andre G. 'Tho volume one
sounded like TOTAL shit). People were anxious to get the music out, so that
the songs could be heard by the burgeoning scene. But that was the 80's.

We've come a long way since that time - the garage sounds of the 60's have
achieved some mainstream notoriety thanks to quality reissues by Sundazed,
Norton, etc, and the Rhino Nuggets CD set. Unfortunately, many of those
great garage 45's will never be available for legal reissue, so the "bootleg
comps" of these singles are a necessity. But that does not mean the quality
(as in Sound, not selection, as selections are a matter of personal
preference), packaging, and availability should be compromised.

I was approached by someone who was preparing several comps of U.S. garage
groups and wanted to "hire" me to research the bands and provide some of the
original 45's for mastering. I was warned by several people not to bother
with this "compiler", since he failed to fill orders for his other releases.
When I scanned the list of 45's scheduled for issue, I immediately realized
that this person did not "own" or have access to the original 45's for the
majority of the tracks. Some of these 45's came from cassette copies that I
had dubbed for one fellow collector. The "compiler" became very angry when
I suggested that he did not have some of these 45's, and proceeded to engage
me in an e-mail "pissing' match. I told him I refused to be involved with
someone who is not up front and honest - there was no way he could have some
of these 45's, and would not admit his source for the material were various
3rd generation cassette copies. When I asked for label scans on a couple of
45's for proof, he dreamed up another excuse as to why he couldn't 'send
them' until AFTER the comp was completed.

The days are OVER for limited edition comps. The guy I mentioned above
claimed to be a fan of the music - maybe he is, but why insist on shitty
sound and miniscule pressings? He said he couldn't "afford" to press more
copies, but would increase his output on future releases. This is just a
LAME COP-OUT excuse to spend little, profit lots. Anybody who knows such
will tell you: the more records you press, the cheaper the cost. Limited
editions of 300 or 400 copies are the result of greed, and the desire to
make the comp "out of print" before it even comes out. Comps like Project
Blue (most sound like shit), Lost Generation (Volume 1 sounds great, but it
was out of print before I could get it), Time Won't Change My Mind (cool
sounds, flat sound quality) were likely done on a shoestring budget, but at
$15 and up for one copy. In my mind, these releases are on the same level
as cassette tapes. The latest Project Blue comp has a few 45's that are
still around in quantity (Mixed Emotions, Saints, Freddy & The Freeloaders).
I haven't heard this comp yet, but I'll bet these are the only 45's mastered
from an original copy. Some other cuts came from dubs of original singles
that came from me indirectly (Monarchs), while others were leaked out from
unreleased tapes (Rave Ons, Aardvarks, Modds).
This could've been a high quality comp if approached and executed in a
respectful manner.

Why do we still have to shell out $25 for some comp pressed in a quantity of
400 copies? There is no reason other than greed and laziness/lack-of-knowhow
(it bugs the shit out of me when people complain about Teenage Shutdown, or
Fuzz, Flakes & Shakes, but cough up a night of bar money on some shoddy
comp). People responsible for these limited editions like to think they are
contributing to the legacy of the music, and that they have some sort of
"right" or "obligation" to compile these obscure 45's in any manner they
choose. I hope most people will agree with me that the only "right" these
compilers have is to do the job right, and give the music the respect it
deserves by presenting a package sourced directly from the 45's, and made
available via at least 1,000 copies. As for the whining excuse of "I can't
afford it", well, do us all a favor and leave the comp scene to those who
know what they're doing.

Mop Top Mike

I agree.. a great new sound (at times a hint of pop) for the
Registrators...definitely a new sound for Rip Off. Beautiful
packaging for the LP, though I'm pissed that the CD has an extra
track.

So do all the CD versions of Rip Off records have
extra tracks? I know the Zodiac Killers has an extra
track... I think the album kicks ass but I refuse to
by a CD if it comes out on vinyl. Is there an MP3
kicking around?
