Hi there, for the past couple of weeks I've been freakin' out on Thee
Michelle Gun Elephant's "Rumble" 10 inch and "West Cabaret Drive" 45.. so
the problem is, I can't seem find any of their other releases anywhere.
Does anybody have an idea how to get for example "Gear Blues" or the new
single "GT400" - without having to order them from Japan (European stores
preferred) ??? Thanks.

Hell yeah - who puts these things out anyway? I've lost track of how many
times that extremely common Mixed Emotions 45 (which isn't that great,
anyway) has been "comped" in the last couple of years.
If it's so expensive to put out vinyl comps, why don't these compilers
just do CDs? For 500-1000 copies, it only costs about $2 per "unit" (at
the most) with booklet. The argument is that vinyl is better, but these
guys use the poxiest quality available - their LPs are like flexidiscs.
And - irony of ironies - the darn things are all digitally remastered
anyway. That pretty well defeats the notion of "vinyl purist" altruism. I
also agree that if you don't have the original singles - or direct DAT of
same - leave it to someone who does. They'll get around to it.

One more comment on DAT's (don't wanna even get started with DAT vs CD vs
vinyl, analog vs digital). The DAT's that I've heard sound like crap. The 45's
that aare digitally recorded to a DAT end up having a lifeless flat sound as
if all the energy was taken out of the record. This could be the recording
skill of the DAT creator. There are exceptions to this rule but I have yet to
hear a DAT recording of a 45 that beats an analog transfer. Tony

Hi:

The best record stores in Chicago are the two Reckless Records (one at
Broadway and Belmont--with good garage stuff--the other in Wicker Park at
Milwaukee and North). Also check out the stores on Clark, Hi-Fi
Records and Second Hand Tunes (both have good comps), both south of
the end of Broadway. Unfortunately I don't have addresses and since I
drive in to the city from the burbs I don't take the el. But you
should be able to find these easy. Good luck and have fun!

entitled "I Need Less."

Also a decent capsule review of ? & the Mysterians' "More Action."

Subject: The Vipers: Outta the Nest!

Greetings,

I just received in my mailbox several hours ago
the CD version of the The Vipers' "Outta the Nest."
My memories are coming back. I remember my first
exposure to the Vipers. I was 15 years old. On
the readio, I heard "Borrowed Time." I thought
it was actually an asthenic 60s gem, but it was
recored the very same year, 1984. Later, DJ Carol
Taylor played their version of the Standells'
"Medication." Believe it or not, the Vipers's version
is better. My favorite song is "Tears (Only Dry").
"Tears" sounds like something that should've been on
"Rubber Soul" or "Revolver." It's very Beatlelesque.

Perhaps, it might be silly to mention, but I remebered
the days when I had the Mop Top Haircut, the Paisley
Shirts, the tight tapered Levis, with the shiny black
Beatle boots. From there, I turned to a skinhead,
a goth (Barnabus Collins/Peter Murphey wannabe) except
I was bit chubbier than they could ever be. From
there, I went to a very low key "college radio" fan
type of attire. Yes, I dressed the preppy alternative
look, modeled after the Smiths. It was so low key,
that I continue it to this day. The only thing is
different about me is that I wear Buddy Holly glasses.
Lately, I've been thinking about returning to my
Mod roots.

Take it easy,
Melvin Little

Yep, it's true. I watch Gomer Pyle USMC and last night (on TVLand)
there was a really great and bompworthy episode in which Gomer got
manipulated into taking the Colonel's daughter to a swingin' go-go
club! There was a live band onstage and they sounded really great...
they were playing a cool minor-key folky type tune like something you
might expect to hear from the Leaves or the Byrds. The band was even
listed in the closing credits...they were named The Factory. I am not
familiar with them, so can somebody clue me in....was this a real band
with commercially released recordings or what?

Oh yeah, Rob Reiner had a role as a partying beatnik who asked Gomer a
bunch of pesky questions about the military like, "So, like, do they give
you room to do your own thing, or do you haveta make the scene with
everybody all at once?" Gotta love that Hollywood beatnik lingo....

There was a band called the Factory based in California way back about that
time, played kinda folk-rock stuff, had Lowell George and (I think) Richie
Hayward before they put together Little Feat.

One of the reissue labels (Rhino?) put out a CD of their stuff 5 years or so
ago. Good light-rocking folk-rock stuff but not anything Featish. The last
cut had Frank Zappa and it sounded very Mothers-ish. George played briefly
with Zappa somewhere in there.

Not sure if they're the Factory from Gomer, but sounds like the right style.

Aargh! I wanted to get that clip, didn't know it was on. The Factory
featured Lowell George (Little Feat) and had a couple 45s on UNI ca. '67.
They cut stuff with Frank Zappa that wasn't released at the time, though
in '93 a cd appeared on Bizarre/Straight and Edsel with most of their
recordings, including the tunes from Gomer Pyle, "Lost" and "Candy Cane
Madness." It's really good! You wouldn't look at it and think there was
some cool '60s garage on there (though it isn't all necessarily garage),
but there is.

Delerium's web site has more info on them - it's where I got most of the
above info!

I think the Teenage Shutdown comps really set a
precedent on what could and should be done. These
comps also illustrated what the buyer should demand
and expect.

I very much agree with you. It amazes me that I bought
the Norton Pretty Things' EPs for about $6 each, but I
spent (and I feel like such a loser when I think about
it) $20 on that reissue of a Birds' EP.

definitely a new sound for them...I gave it one listen through and there
are a few really good songs. Possibly one lp would have been
better....still not as good as the singles. And what's with Rip Off,
isn't this the same label that can't press b sides to their 7"'s...and
now a double album?

Frank Sutton portrayed "Sarge" on this long running show, constantly
flustered with Gomer's antics.
He did at least one album that I know of, maybe Greg can enlighten more on
this one. Jim Neigbors (spelling?) did numerous easy listening records, as
well as in his "Gomer" character.

why were those Pretties EP's were put out in the first place? Same material
as on all those cool CD reissues. Put your money towards something else, I
say.
Norton should have spared the vinyl and just put out glossy posters of that
cool packaging.
