Hey,

Apologizing in advance for my horrible memory, but weren't the Factory on
some other TV show? I'm thinking they played the psychedelic band on one
Get Smart episode (they were called the Groovy somethings in the show, but
I think the credits said Factory). Somebody here must know...

Subject: Mac database

As a non-computer person who's been trying for years how to put up a
database on my website that would mirror one I would keep on my Mac, I've
been told repeatedly by experts that Filemaker Pro (5.0 or later) is the
only way to go. But you still have to set up the database format (which
could I suppose be done, saved, and made available for FTP download), and
then find a server who could host it. And to search the database, you'd
need a cgi script on the client side (which could also be downloaded, or
incorporated into a website.

I hereby volunteer to host the Mac version of "Searchin' for Shakes" on the
Bomp website (with all credit and links to Hitomi, of course) for the
conveniece of those among us who continue to "think different." In
addition, I have some very substantial databases of my own (British rock,
US garage, girl groups, surf music, etc, etc) that seem to be more complete
than what's available via Delirium). But I've never been able to sort out
the technical hurdles. Given the fact that Bomp is hosted by the
ever-helpful Wilson Smith, I don't think there'd be a problem with the cgi,
and I believe Filemaker is compatible with NT and UNIX based databases, so
I'm guessing it could be worked out, if someone with the slightest bit of
savvy had the desire to guide us thru it.

Help, anyone?

Hello everyone!
I've stumbled upon two CD:s by some group called Dust, but I don't know if it's any good. One is from 1971 and the other from 1972, the
covers are horrible (one with skeletons and the other with some kind of vikings, I suppose), All Music says it's psychedelic hardrock,
but that's all. Is this anything worth getting? What do they sound like?
Thanks,

Yeah, I was under the impression that The Blues Magoos were not together, but
maybe what you hear thru the grapevine is correct, and they are. I'll try
and track down Pepe (anyone got an email or tel. no. on him?) and explore the
possibilities of having them perform at CAVESTOMP!2000 Nov. 3,4,5. Thanks

The Factory also were on an episode of F-TROOP. (What were a 1960s long-hair
band doing in the 19th Century Old West? . . . uh, don't ask . . .)

I recall an old GET SMART episode where Larry Storch plays a psychedelic
villain called "the Groovy Guru." His plan for world domination involved a
hypnotic rock 'n' roll message that will be sent to the nation's teenagers via
a group called "The Sacred Cows" (the lyrics, if I remember right, went "Kill,
kill, kill/It's a thrill, thrill, thrill . . . ") But I don't know if "The
Sacred Cows" actually were musicians of note, or just actors. They didn't get
much TV time.

finally break down and get TV Land! I may have to move to a town that
has it. Move it! Move it! Move it!

I just saw this band from Rochester called the Riviera Playboys last
night. How come nobody ever mentions them on the list? These guys were
the best fuckin' garage band I have ever seen and I've seen the Lyres
over 60 times! I'm pissed that I missed the first three songs. They
opened with Journey to the Center of the Mind. They all played
Daneclectros. (At least until the bass player broke his input jack, then
he just ripped one of the basses hanging from the ceiling! CDs for $5, T
Shirts for $7! And nice guys too that aren't stuck on themselves. They
were like an older and friendlier version of the Swingin' Neckbreakers.

Who cares if my girlfriend is moving out in two weeks? I have a new
favorite band! Doesn't that put things on this list in perspective? :)

Look for a new White Trash Music very soon!
Hear Alex Piandes and I on "On The Town" this Wednesday! We may even

WMFO had their "Greatest Hits" garage covers CD from about 2 years back,
but it of course was paid the ultimate tribute. That is, that someone
deemed it worthy of stealing for the trade-in value or simply keeping it for

Yeah and the announcer had to tell you it was a Quinn Martin production, in

Yeah, i hear you on autographs and they would look riduculous on a cd but
fuck, it's just a rehashing of tracks readily available elsewhere (and as
far as vinyl vs. cd - aren't the tracks digitally remastered anyways?). I
know many people love collecting these things, and i'm glad that labels like
Norton keep this stuff alive, but just like their jukebox series, this has a
very limited market.

As far as the posters are concerned, i think there would be a market for
these things. Wouldn't it be cool to have some glossy cardback
reproductions of various sleeve art/photos? They would be framable,
signable, and labels could spare the vinyl! Of course the asshole that
eventually does this will print a limited numbered pressing and charge
everyone out the ass.

Actually, I think they have been mentioned once or twice before. I was
lucky enough to have them send me a promo copy of their disc for review
when it came out some time back. Probably 'cuz I knew a couple of the guys
from when I was at the University of Rochester in the mid-80s. Back then, I

couple killer 45s.) And I knew Dave Anderson as the man behind Saxon

In fact, I got an e-mail on Valentine's Day morning from Dave telling me
the R. Playboys were gonna be at Manitoba's that afternoon/evening for a

Since the release of the "Greatest Hits" CD, the band has had a couple of
lineup changes and are starting to sound more like the Projectiles again(and
that's a good change.) When they started, the Playboys they were kinda
polished as is evident on the CD, but lately they've become a lot tougher
sounding.

Since the CD, drummer Christopher Earl(aka the Squire of The Subterrain)
left the band(He made a guest appearance last night with his other old band
the Hi Risers.) He was replaced by Tom Marionetti, ex-drummer for the
Fertility Rite Brothers. Also, they added Jerry Flanagan on second
guitar(also from the FRB's.) I'm sure Blair must have seen them back in the
80's. They were probably the best garage band in Rochester from the mid to
late 80's(along with the Projectiles.) These guys definitely give the
Riviera Playboys extra energy.

It's unfortunate that the Fertility Rite Bros never released anything while
they were together. A few years ago they did put out a fantastic cassette
only collection of live and studio tracks. Last year they also released a
four song 7" and reunited on Hallowwen 1998 for a one-off show.

Oh yeah, check out Hasil Adkins sporting a Fertility Rite Brothers T-shirt
on the cover of his Achy Breaky Ha Ha Ha LP.

I was going to pst yesterday, but I haven't actually dug the record out of
whatever box it's lurking in, this is what I remember, the sargeant is
screaming at Gomer, "WHAT STINKS?" and "OUT, OUT, OUT!" It's on a Placebo
records (Phoenix, AZ) compilation from about the mid '80s. The music is
sorta Boyd Riceish (subliminal, like the record he did when he took a
recording parents were supposed to play for their kids "and you will pick
up your toys, and you will be happy" and added music to it) industrial, but
hypnotic, not jet engine in your face, industrial. And no I can't remember
the band's name and as soon as I get my hands on the actual record I'll let
you know more.

I'd pick Godz 2 over Contact High. 2 has their attempts at being a rock
band: Radar Eyes, Soon The Moon, and Permanant Green Light. Contact High has
some good moments too, but not an electric guitar to be heard.

Both albums are heavy on the weirdness and dissonance, so if you're not into
that, you might want to avoid them. Third Testament is the one to get if you
have to hear everything. Some nice moments, but half of it sounds like
songwriting demos, and the other half is weirdness and dissonance that isn't
quite as interesting as it was on the other albums.

(digging out Placebo files)......

Went thru what i had/taped from the Placebo label. Sounds like something i would
have kept, i was very into that 'sampling over beats' thing, but nope: either
decided not to keep it or never ran across it.

Perhaps i can narrow it down tho. Placebo compilations:

"Amuck" (1982, TOO early)
"This Is Phoenix V.1" (1984, doubt it, still too early for widespread sampling)
Volume 2 (1985, maybe, never owned it)
Volume 3: "More Coffee...." (1986, that'd be about right, if we're talkin' sampling)

My copies of the albums are in storage. Anybody have "This Is Phoenix Volume 3"?
I'd check THERE.

They are psychie hard rock. They have some fine
moments. Not as crunchy as say Sir Lord Baltimore....
Sorry, not in a describing mood. Both albums are kind
of different and can't recommend one over the other
but would buy them again if I had to.

One note, the drummer, Marc Bell, went on to become
Marky Ramone. I think he also drummed for the Voidoids
as well.

Hey Greg - I would totally be into helping you out
with this stuff. To get the FileMaker Pro databases to
work on a CGI over the web, your' web server has to
have FileMaker Pro on it as well. However, it should
be no big deal to export the FileMaker Pro files to a
text format and write a cgi that goes around that for
searches and stuff.

I do this shit for a living and its become old hat.
Someday, I'll have all my debts paid off and will
stick it to the man with raw fucking RnR.

I would also be interested in obtaining these two CDs,
but were there any CDs of Wimple Winch stuff? I
thought that there were only a comprehensive LP
release.

I tend to agree, except that "Radar Eyes" is a true masterpiece. Still, I can
vouch for one thing: when stoned, all Godz albums turn into something very
different and rather amazing.
