Yep they were a Philly band who sold a wack of records locally apparently.
The material ranges form show-biz style tunes to folk-pop to things like
"Nut Rocker"...

The big hit was "Won't Find Better Than Me" when the band became known as
NEW HOPE.
They have some of the most stunning harmonies you'll ever hear and I got to
wonder if any of them were ever choir boys?
Story I heard is the piano player Karl Hausman went on to be oneof them
Disney boardwalk piano players or something,, Dunno for sure.
Certainly anyone on the list from PA should have heard these guys...

Attched here is a review of the cd from MOHAIR SWEETS # 5 (latest issue)
The Kit Kats: It's About Time (Jamie/Guyden Double CD) Incredible harmony
vocals and material that runs from soft-rock ("He Was A Friend Of Mine,"
"Let's Get Lost On A Country Road") to rock'n'roll slowies/oldies (their
classic "Puddin 'N' Tain," "Sea Of Love," "Nut Rocker"), to show tunes
("Favourite Things"), to sublime folk-pop (the stunning hit "Won't Find
Better Than Me"). Running the same path, for the most part at least, as
groups like the Association and Mamas and The Papas, the Kit Kats were also
able to come up with some unique numbers that are reminiscent of DDDBM&T or
even the Move. As a working band the Kats played upwards of 200 dates a year
and with that many days working you get your chops together. Piano player
Karl Hausman is nothing short of amazing here and John Bradley's stunning
voice, capable of everything from bass to high-tenor, is a signature sound
that few will ever forget. While the material may not be to everyone's
taste, you have to hear "Won't Find Better Than Me" at least once, cos it
really is nothing short of knockout. (Visit Jamie/Guyden at:
http://www.jamguy.com for info on the Kit Kats and more.)(Disc 1: 17 tracks,
46:58 playing time. Disc 2 is enhanced: 13 tracks, 40:31 playing time + 1
CDR movie for all you fortunate enough to have a computer.)

Ciao for now... as I'm back to lurking...

Does anyone remember an episode of "Dragnet" in which Friday and Gannon
(a/k/a Col. Potter) visit a Timothy Leary type? The episode has some cover
story as to why they are at the guru's house, and the show is basically a
series of diatribes, first by the guru, then by Friday. Of course, the cops
argument wins in the end.

The kicker is, the guy is never accused of any crime, much less convicted.
The little closing segment about the guy's sentence refers to a crime he's
later arrested for.

Is "Dragnet" on TVLand? I wouldn't want to sit through much of that
stiff-necked show, but that one I'd watch again.

I was listening to this top 100 of 1967 for WPGC in washington, DC over
the weekend. pretty whacked stuff, "1967 was a great year and I just
know 1968 is going to be the best year ever." yikes.

but the ridiculous part to me was that over and over again, in between
at least half fo the songs, the DJ said, "would you believe... song
number 54." or, the catchphrases off that show must've driven people
nuts, 'cuz this guy didn't know when to quit..

>Also funny how they tried to add an air of
>legitimate drama to it by presenting an hour long show in "acts,"
convenantly
>segmenting the show up for ads.

yeah, I think Quinn was trying to lend an air of legitimacy to the
forced segmenting by the network, the act structure in TV has been
pretty much set for 30-40 years, one fo the reasons little kids can
watch old sitcoms and totally understand them, the act thing is really
strong in the 1990s where it's really prescribed by the networks that
the jokes go here, here and here, with a nonsense trailing joke during
the credits, etc. Frasier never budges from a minute-by-minute
structure. Seinfeld actually made reusing the same structure an art.
The characters did the same thing in each show, but like the Ramones,
made 3 chords work really well in their favor.

Basically, I think, if you do stuff on the cheap, it will end up
sounding cheap (ok, if you're
a band wanting to sound that way, maybe not ok if I'm paying $30 for
a re-issue).
With all the mastering technology out there, it's insane what's
possible. You could
transfer vinyl onto analog tape and "warm" it up further using
various methods (there
is a great piece of studio gear from Hamilton, Ontario called a
"Tubetronix" that I used on
my next cd that looks like a panel from a 40s rocket ship or
something but it warms everything up).
After that, you load it into ProTools for mastering and editing and
if the engineer knows his stuff,
you can come out with something sonically superior to the original.
Mastering is where everybody
cheaps out and/or don't know what it is, so yeah, hooking up a DAT
player to your turntable and
pressing cds from that will pretty well sour things for everybody.

better than the one made circa late-'80s/early '90s. Despite the stiffness

At the outset I really thought we were in for trouble...I guess they
really wanted to get the point across that Murry was not a nice guy.
But, after they established that fact it was almost good....and after
that Little Richard flick, it was quite a relief.

and at least they both had killer soundtracks!

The "Downtown Soulville" comp is 100% killer soul

of real raw blues...as it should be, since all the

The lyrics sung by the Sacred Cows--some of the most brilliant of all time I
might add--were:

Thrill Thrill Thrill
Kill Kill Kill
Make the scene
Bump off a Dean

And then another line that ended "bump off a square" and "that's the
word/hate is in."

They all wore Viking horns and wool Viking vests, with beards and
sunglasses. I seem to remember there was no bass player and the guitarist
had a blonde Tele. I also had no idea they could be a real band, but they
were definitely the perfect vehicle for disseminating the Groovy Guru's
message of mass destruction.

The Factory also were on an episode of F-TROOP. (What were a 1960s long-hair
band doing in the 19th Century Old West? . . . uh, don't ask . . .)

I recall an old GET SMART episode where Larry Storch plays a psychedelic
villain called "the Groovy Guru." His plan for world domination involved a
hypnotic rock 'n' roll message that will be sent to the nation's teenagers
via
a group called "The Sacred Cows" (the lyrics, if I remember right, went
"Kill,
kill, kill/It's a thrill, thrill, thrill . . . ") But I don't know if "The
Sacred Cows" actually were musicians of note, or just actors. They didn't
get
much TV time.

well there is plenty of documentation for that, right down to drunken
beligerant Murray busting into the studio. But a question arises in partII
where they show Brian burning the master tapes and mock ups for the Smile LP
in his fireplace. Kinda glosses over the fact that Capital Records put the
kibosh on it. Plus the kind of gave the impression that the record company
didn't release Pet Spunds, which we know isn't the case.

Folks,

This show marked our fifth annual "Day The Surf Stood Still" mid-winter

Subject: Beach Boys Reissues

I thought the below information taken from "The Big Takeover" List
might be of interest to the Bomp Brian Wilson (Beach Boys) listeners.
The vcr is taping the conclusion of the ABC tele-biography as I write
this, so I'm not able to offer my final opinion on Beach Boys: An
American Family. While watching the first night, I was wondering why
Murray Wilson had a East Coast accent if he was from Kansas?

The good news below is that Capitol will be back with the 2 albums on 1
compact disc format and "Sunflower" will be re-issued. When I lived in
the Detroit area, I was able to pick up the two for ones that were still
in print from Canada. Sean O'Hagan of the High Llamas frequently cites
"Sunflower" in his interviews after the obvious 65-67 period. It will
be interesting to hear this recording after not buying a vinyl copy for
$12 at Car City Records back in Michigan. Unlike the late seventies
stuff which is common at every garage sale and thrift store for
quarters, the early seventies BB recordings are harder to find at
non-collector prices.

>From Phoenix with sun,

Ted L.

For those of you wondering if the Beach Boys' early 1970s albums would
ever be reissued on CD, it looks like they will. According to latest
issue of ICE, Capitol has licensed those albums from the group and will
be
putting them out this spring as 2 albums-on-1 disc packages. They will
release SUNFLOWER and SURF'S UP together; CARL & THE PASSIONS and
HOLLAND
will be on another set (the latter including Brian's fantasy piece "Mt.
Vernon & Fairway" which was originally included as a 7" EP); and the
live
album IN CONCERT will be on one disc. No bonus cuts will be included,
as
Capitol is saving those up for a separate unreleased/rarities disc.

Later in the year Capitol will also reissue the 60s BB albums in the
2-for-1 format they came out as in 1990, deleting the single album discs
currently in print. All releases will include original artwork and
liner
notes, and in the case of SUNFLOWER, they used the original 2-track
master
tape that had been mislabeled and lost in the archives (and which had
not
been used for the original vinyl release or any of the subsequent
reissues).

ICE's article includes an interview with the man in charge of the
project,
Capitol's A&R head of reissues, Paul Atkinson--the same Paul Atkinson
who
was the Zombies' guitarist! He says he wants to make sure all these
reissues are done right, and that the fans aren't given short shrift.
Might he be using his own group's box set as a guideline on how to do it
right? One can only hope so.

Could someone translate this sort-of confusing quote?

"Later in the year Capitol will also reissue the 60s BB albums in the
2-for-1 format they came out as in 1990, deleting the single album discs
currently in print."

Is this to say that the "2-for-1"s have been OUT of print, and that the TEN albums
in the FIVE "2-for-1" series have been available as TEN "1-for-1"s in the interim??

I base this on my ownership of FIVE "2-for-1"s.

Surfin' Safari/Surfin' USA
Surfer Girl/Shut Down V.2
Little Deuce Coupe/All Summer Long
BB Today/Summer Days
BB Concert/Live in London

Were there MORE in this series?

English is my first language. Esperanto my second. Record-company speak, my third.
