I need verification for this. I can't BELIEVE a record label would put these
albums together with any hope in hell, besides holding on to copyrights. I don't
doubt YOU, forgive me (i'm a Beach Boys fan, k?). What the hell was Capitol
thinking? Is this for real? Numbers. Facts. Please. These are like, "2-for-1"s

The ABC flick was pretty good, but as most "retrospectives", it tended to
exaggerate certain elements. I'm sure Mike Love took out some of his demons
in setting the scenes with Brian and his "leeches".

The one "music" point that bugged the shit outta me was the scene where
"Brian" sits at the piano, and plays "In My room" for "Marilyn". The
producers used a recent take from Brian, cut in the 90's (I call those
versions from the "marble-mouthed" Brian era). I could tell it was a later
recording, but I'm sure most of America (those who live and die by People
Magazine) don't care or could tell.

As for the Summer Dreams movie done in 1990, I quite enjoyed this, factually
inaccurate or not. More comedic than anything. It tended to focus on Brian
and Dennis, the two tragic figures (at that time).

While it was great to see the Sunrays scene with Murry in the studio in last
night's movie, it was LAME to hear a faux pas version of "I Live For The
Sun"...I hate 'made for movie' remakes that aren't true to the original.
The lead studio singer couldn't even hit the hi notes that Rick Henn could.
And a BIG GAFF for not depicting the drummer as the lead vocalist (Rick was
the drummer and lead vocal in the Sunrays). The movie had the guitarist
singing. Another Mike Love gaff? Although Mike Love's biggest crime is
continuing to float the Beach Boys life raft that has long since deflated...

It did seem to be "mike love friendly". I am not the most knowledgeable
beach boys fan but didn't mike love initially hate "good vibrations"? I
recall reading somewhere that love thought that "vibrations" was too arty
and tried to kill its release. I may be wrong about that but i recalled
reading that last night as the telemovie showed love graciously helping
brian to write the song. tom.

Let me also say these records really cook. Very close to a cross between
really fast early Black Sabbath and "Back in the USA" era MC5. With a goofy
attitude. They didn't make demons and wizards hard-psych, that's for sure.
Very tongue in cheek.

And Marky Ramone was about 16 at the time, so I hear.

I don't watch that much TV, but this was an exception. Not bad fare, tho' I wished they explored the Beatles vs. Beach Boys a bit more. I thought some the likenesses were not half bad. I am very glad they used the original tracks.

Did they really torch that red T-Bird.......?

I can't say I think so. Their strongest point were
the singles: "Hey Little Bird," "What The New Breed
Say," "Are You A Boy...." and "Moulty." I once
listened to the old One Way reissue of the album and
was not impressed. Maybe this new Sundazed reissue
might change my mind, though.

The first two-fers in question came out on Brother/Reprise first and
Brother was the Beach Boys' own label under Reprise ("And now, Frank
Sinatra and the Beach Boys sing...?"). My guess is that since these sold
rather poorly at the time, folks would get more for their dollar and they
would at least sell SOMETHING. Being on Brother, perhaps (but not
definitely) the Beach Boys OK'ed this. I haven't heard all of any of the
six albums, so I cannot say how I feel about this artistically. I am also
quite sure had Capitol (who re-released the double sets) issued each album
by itself, people would have called them greedheads for trying to gouge
people for what was once a two for one deal.

As for the third album, Mr. Apollo put a ? after "Stack-O-Tracks" and I
don't know whether that meant "Why did they bother reissuing this?" or
"What is this", but for anyone's information, it is a "Play Along With the
Beach Boys" record and had been out of print for many years.

Adrian Lloyd of "Lorna" fame was in Adrian and the Sunsets and the Rumblers.

According to Delerium's site (which means if Glynis Ward, Tony Sanchez or
Mike Markesich want to correct this...), this was the Sunrays' personnel:

RICK HENN drms, vcls
VINCE HOZIER bs, vcls

Gimme a break! They were/are best friends, and both of them rabid horndogs.
(Also both married, but that never stopped 'em.) When I was hanging out
with them a lot in the '70s, "Eddie" was married to a beautiful, sexy girl
and they were always going at it. One time in London, I ran into them and
subsequently introduced them to some groupies I happened to have met.
Didn't see them again for several days...

I thought it was pretty great. Especially the casting. At first I wasn't
sure about Brian, but as the facial hair grew, he looked more and more
authentic. And the house in Bel Air looked very much like the one I visited
in 1973. Even the minor rolls were well-cast, though Nik Venet was
heavier-set. Diane Rovell looked very, very close to the real Diane.
Incidentelly, I think there was more to this story than ever came out. The
Rovell sisters were VERY flirtatious, and had a kind of sister-act they did
together, which they'd probably been doing all their lives, and likely got
Brian hooked with--dangling the hook that he'd get 2 girls for the price of
one! This is just speculation of course, but in the movie, when the 2 girls
take Brian up to their bedroom (with parental approval!) there are some sly
looks going around. I ALWAYS had this impression, on the basis of the short
time I knew the "menage".

More authenticity: Bruce mentioning the Ripchords (nice touch). I was
almost sure they'd used Tim White's book as source material, but it wasn't
in the credits as far as I was able to see. The only anachronism I spotted
(and period films are always full of them...) was the meeting with Nik
Venet at Capitol in 1973. It's true, Capitol did decide to put out the old
stuff then, but the BB were meanwhile at Warners being very active with
Brother Records--not exactly has-beens. And Nik himself was no longer there
at all; he was at United Artists, where I worked with him in 1972-73 (and
years later bought his BB gold records, when he was for some reason
destitute... but that's another story). The only other "off" fact I spotted
was Hite Morgan renaming the Pendletones as the Beach Boys--it was actually
promo man Russ Regan who gets the credit for that. But I can understand the
dramatic reasons for telescoping a minor event like this.

One of my favorite parts was the record company meetings where Brian used
tape recorders to answer Venet's questions. Don't know if this really
happened, but what a great idea! I think I know somebody who can make use
of it right now...

All in all, a real blast. I wish I'd taped it.

And the amazing "Party/Stacks-o-Tracks" combo CD is still available from the
BMG record club! "Stack-o-Tracks" is just the instrumental tracks to a bunch
of their songs--no vocals, although I understand that you can hear some
faint traces of the singing they erased on some songs!

You're right about the casting, Greg. The Brian actor even got his
talking-out-of-the-side-of-the-mouth mannerism down quite well.

Looked to me like Denny just smashed the window of the 'Vette (was it a
'Vette or something more exotic; not sure now). Like at least the actor (if
not the character) was careful to only hit the window!

Speaking of TV, anyone pick up the strains of "Pictures of Matchstick Men" in
the background of the TV ads for the New Saturn sedans? The premise of the ad

Yeah, the first four were notoriously poor sellers in my old store. They sat and
sat, even at $3-5 a pop. Bin filler, basically. Each has one or more trax that *i*
liked, but i'm real patient with the Boys and kept an open ear to find something
of merit on them, ie. "Wild Honey", "Darlin'", "Do It Again", "I Can Hear Music",
etc. (i'm going on memory here).

And definitely knew about Stack-O-Trax. Was amused that it even GOT reissued, tho
am certainly not complaining about the comprehensive approach. Even popped for
that Japanese cd combining "Rarities" and the wretched "Medley" album, which i've
long since dumped.

Heard THAT, Greg. I'm so used to these network music-bio's being so *wincingly*
bad that i had it on in the background while doing 'puter work and reading Bomp
posts, then kept turning around for this cool thing or that cool thing, going:
"damn, damn. WHY aren't i taping this???"

Lenny? Ari? Up for a trade? I imagine with its' four hour length, they probably
won't get around to re-broadcasting it any time soon. Or until VH-1 or the Family
Channel grab it, as they did with the Jackson 5's lengthy bio-pic.

ps: i'm glad you've stopped lurking, btw. Whither Barnes, Sculatti, Mendelssohn
and so on? Apologies if any of them are dead or something, i haven't been keeping track.
Don't tell me they think they're too "old" for this! It's fun! Like a daily
mini-issue of a good fanzine with breaking news (new Sundazed stuff), reviews
(people reviewing 45's they picked up over the weekend), consumer cautioning
(so-and-so's compilation has lousy sound, etc.), and opinions opinions opinions.
Dig it! :)

I'm weeks late again. . . . Evan, get the first four (My Generation, Happy
Jack, Sell Out, and Magic Bus) and "Meaty " as well, 'cuz it's got tracks
not on any other LP, mainly "I Can't Explain," "Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere",
"Pictures of Lily" and "The Seeker."
