Where to begin:

Anything by Alanis Morisette
Anything by Shania Twain, especially "Man! I Feel Like
A Woman"
Anything by Celine Dion, especially that friggin
"Titanic" song
"Livin' La Vida Loca" by Ricky Martin
"Macarena" by Los Del Rio
"Good Morning Starshine" by Oliver
"Venus" by Frankie Avalon
"Tie A Yellow Ribbon 'Round The Ole Oak Tree" by Tony
      Orlando and Dawn
"Feelings" by Morris Alpert
Anything by Jennifer Lopez
"Believe" by Cher
"Afternoon Delight" by Starland Vocal Band
"Don't Speak" by No Doubt, or anything else by that
crappy band
Any of Pat Boone's remakes of Little Richard and Fats
Domino songs.

There are many, many more, believe me. Sorry, but I
can't pick just one. The overwhelming blandness of
the above-mentioned songs and artists just robs me of
both sanity and breathing space.

worst LP{call it Elvis shit after the infamous bootleg}2, bad song hall
call it say after Elvis worst say song of the shrimp, etc,

i love witchfinder general but would never call them psych! they were like a
punk-rock black sabbath (i.e. similar sound/imagery, super sloppy). great
band, great (ridiculous) album covers. oh, and they were around in the early
'80s, not the late '60s/'70s, so you could hardly call them contemporaries of
sabbath...

btw, anyone got a copy of their 7" EP they wanna sell?

This LP has been out of print in the UK for years due to an age-old dispute
between Shel Talmy (original producer) and (I guess) the Oo's management.
The original mono issue (Brunswick 1965) is really hard to find in good
condition, and the one legit reissue, also in mono (Virgin 1980) is getting
kinda scarce too. There are bootlegs knocking around too. There is no
domestic CD reissue available, although of course one can easily find the US
version on MCA, titled "The Who Sing My Generation" and featuring a rubbishy
cover, different track lineup and fake stereo. Ugh.

Magic Bus is just a quickie compilation put together by US Decca. It's
easily findable on CD.

Meanwhile the band's second LP "A Quick One" and their third, the pop-art
classic "Sell Out" are both on CD everywhere and I would recommend both too!
The recent "BBC Sessions" set, featuring some (but not all) of the band's
60s/early 70s BBC stuff, is also worth getting. There is a double vinyl
edition as well as the CD. Coolsville!

Hope that's useful,

In mono,

Let me clarify my dislike of this...this...guy. His singing is on-key,
albeit overwrought. He turned "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay" from
wistful reflection to wrenching exorcism. What brings me to loathe level
is the fact that he was quoted as saying that his versions "improve" on the
originals. I don't mind paying homage (heck, the King's English do
covers!), but when Bolotin (his real name. What are you hiding!?) thinks
that his misbegotten wheeze is an improvement on Otis Redding or anyone
else he covers, then one realizes that his head is constricting his brain
and forces out ego. Probably makes his hair curly, too.

I wouldn't have minded had he said that he TRIES to improve on the
originals. That just warrants a "good luck, mate" and a half-smile. It's
rare to improve on what he deems to cover. One person did improve on an
Otis Redding original and Redding even admitted it. When he heard Aretha
Franklin's version of "Respect", he smiled and said, "That little girl
stole my song from me!". I rather like his version, too, though.

Loathe,
Brian Phillips

Do i detect SARCASM in that little question? Hmmmm???? :)

You're right, tho.

Hey, we're just taking a breather from all the hard info of the past few weeks. Go
to the Bomp Site and bang up the BompList Archive if you want an instant fix of
garage and psyche talk. Basically, right now, we're a bunch of garage/psyche
FANATICS who enjoy going off on a tangent now and again. Scroll back in the
Archives and you'll see what i mean. It is, however, nice to see that everyone on
the List isn't myopic with the garage/psyche stuff, and actually have many other
interests and strange thoughts that make the List more fun and less like
"homework". A balance of the two works best for me, personally.

Actually, i got a list of questions which i'll post in a minute that'll take us
back into the "core" of the List, if not necessarily "6ts garage or psyche", as
you put it. Hope you, and the Listies cans assist.

Subject: NEW QUESTIONS! back to work, kids! :)

The first question, perhaps best answered by Greg?

1) The Sire double albums: I have:

3701 (History of British Blues V.1)
3702 (History of British Rock V.1)
3711 (Roots of British Rock V.1)

What OTHER collections of this kind were on Sire?
Were there Volume 2's of anything, etc. etc.?
Numbers and titles and if 2LP sets or not, etc. etc.
- -------------
2) In the 80's, a label put out a Sorrows (UK mod band)
compilation.

What label and number? I seem to remember it was a UK
label, but beyond that, i dunno. And has any of the
Don Fardon or Miki Dallon stuff gotten compiled anywhere
yet?
- ------------
3) I figure by now there MUST be a book about early
60's UK producer/artist Joe Meek. Any pointers? I'm about
to score some stuff from Lenny (2 hours+ of rarities and
one-off singles) PLUS i have the Razor & Tie JM collection,
and i'd like to do some homework. Any links to online Meek info
would be cool too.

Speaking of Michael Bolton buying the Isley Bros. catalog & "improving" the

Geez, I kinda like Alanis, particulary that first song ("You Oughta
Know")...People I'd like to kill whenever I hear their music include Lionel
Richie, Kenny Rogers, Alabama, Oak Ridge Boys, Journey...well, I could list
artists all day (remember Richard Marx?), but the question was about
specific songs. Another horrible Helen Reddy one was "Angie Baby"..."We
Built This City" by Starship..."We Are the World"..."Ebony and
Ivory"..."Muskrat Love" by the Captain & Tennille...Well, it's a lot easier
for me to list artists rather than songs: Christopher Cross, Michael
McDonald, Loverboy, Billy Joel, Phil Collins, Toto, Huey Lewis, Color Me
Badd, Supertramp...

That's easyŠand kinda obvious fr me at least. Stairway to Heaven! Aaaaaccckk. If i never hear it again blahblahblah. I don't need to kill anyone tho, or maybe any fucker that plays that song in my life again. Page, Plant etc. couldn't really help themselves with Satan hanging around and all that recording-in-Aleister-Crowley's-castle bull. Also, has anyone seen the Dragnet episode where the 2dicks stumble upon some kinda POT party and find a baby floating in the bathtub, um like dead man? Whoa, intense, for me at the tender age of about 12 or so. Didn't affect my future pot use OR ability to bathe babies!

Don - a 100pp+ paper on Jack Webb. Wow! Now seems like a good
time to mention that a Jack Webb biography came out late last year,
"Just the Facts, Ma'am: The Authorized Biography of Jack Webb, Creator
of Dragnet, Adam-12, and Emergency" -- by Daniel Moyer. It was published
by an outfit called The Eugene Alvarez Company. Have you read this??
I don't have it yet, but if the birthday hints I dropped in my wife's direction
were successful, it will show up pretty soon. Incidentally, I went to Amazon.com
to get info so I could correctly quote the title and found that photocopies of
Jack Webb's will are being auctioned on the site as well.

Someone else asked if Dragnet is currently runnning on TV Land and the
answer is yes, each weeknight @ 9PM, followed by a half-hour of Adam-12
at 9:30PM. Webb was the exec. producer of Adam-12, so if you like
Dragnet and the J. Webb style, chances are pretty good you'll like Adam-12, too.

<<but until I get a copy of "Roach & Roll" my life

Ivan, I only have one copy of Roach and Roll, unfortunately. Do you
remember the Roach Motel/Charlie Pickett goof of "We're an American Band" at
Flynn's... I think they were playing with Gay Cowboys In Bondage that night.

THE MAVERICKS: Saw their very first show in late 1989, at Churchill's
Hideaway... back then it was Raul Malo, Ben Peeler on guitar, and two
members of Nuclear Valdez. They actually started out as a Nuclear Valdez
side-project, with Raul (their old buddy from the Tomboys and the Basics)...
a chance to do some of their favorite old country songs and other covers
like "Born on the Bayou". How they grew in such a short period of time, as
Raul's songwriting developed. They returned to Churchill's to cut their
first MCA video (for "Hey Good Lookin'") -- they stuck a marlin on the stage
to make it look like a country bar, instead of the punk place Churchill's
was! I was one of the dancers during the video shoot, but didn't make the
cut on the final video. It's interesting that with NO COUNTRY SCENE in
Miami in 1989-90, the Mavs played a lot of punk and rock venues and were
completely accepted due to the INTENSITY with which they played their music.
They played some strange bills in those early days (i.e. opening for Run
Westy Run at Washington Square). Both the Mavericks and Marilyn Manson
began their careers opening for the same band! (The Goods)... the first
official Manson show was March 1990, also at Churchill's. The Goods got
them the gig... since Brian Warner (Manson) had written a piece about them
for "Tonight Today" magazine.

Bompers,

I tend to avoid commercial radio like the plague, but I'm sure the crap
quotient is as high as ever since the 70's. Where I work, I sometimes walk
by the radio playing the oldies station and happened upon two real all-time
rock stinkers in my book:

"We Built This City (On Rock & Roll)" by Jefferson Starship Hard to believe
these were some of the same folks who wowed us with stuff like "Somebody To
Love" and Greasy Heart"..

"Open Arms" by Journey Again, I could handle these cats with Mr. Greg
"Black Magic Woman" Rollie singin' and the guitar-wanking prog/psych attack
of the early albums, but Steve Perry's power ballad whining is completely
intolerable!

Great examples of the art of "selling out".

By the way, the first time I heard Michael Bolton's name, I thought UFO's
first drummer had started a solo career! Same with a guy named Bobby
Caldwell...thought it was the amazing Captain Beyond/Armagedon drummer.
Anyone else have those silly head-scratching mistaken identity experiences
(ala mis-heard lyrics)?

El Squirrello.

Anything by The Smiths. At all. There's very little music that I honestly
detest but Morrissey should be tortured for the pain and suffering that he
caused me in my teenage years.

How could I ever forget this one? This is one of the
most odious records ever made in my book. No other
record I've ever heard says "We sold out and we're
glad we did" quite like this one. May it rank as a
nasty blot on their permanent records forever.

YES! I coudn't agree more. I had to endure this
loudmouth on the radio all through my high school and
college years. More reason not to reminisce about the
80s. And the stench goes on forever.........

Spreading loathing throughout the land,

Brian

Ever since "Everyday People" came out on that Toyota
commercial, I've hated that song, but I don't wanna
kill Sly. Every time that song comes on the radio I
change the channel and think that even after that
commercial, there are still alot of people (people who
are my age)who don't know who Sly & The Family Stone
are, but they know that freakin song. I also hate
"Under The Boardwalk" (both the one by the Drifters &
the one by Petula Clark), wait a minute, I dislike
almost all songs by the Drifters.

I've read Mr. Morrissy had many nice things to say about the NY

There's something amazing about Armagedon? Sorry, but as far as stinkers by
people who were good in the sixties go, that album is slightly better than
Steve Marriott's solo album.
