"Red's Dream" was also a single on the Roulette label. I found one at a

Subject: Re: the Wild Thing on Elektra

from a 1990 ish of " Record Hunter " magazine, from an article and interview
with Elektra Records president Jac Holzman:
Not everything Elektra released was memorable: there are projects that
Jac hopes the world will forget. At the mention of a band called THE WILD
THING, he let's out a moan. Yet he remains unrepantant about signing a band
of silk shirted Chicanos with their hair piled up to the ceiling, carefully
plunking out the hits of the day to a boogie beat. " I wanted to make a dance
record that was right for the moment, I wanted to do it and had fun doing it
but it turned out to be an embarrassment for me. Everybody thought I was
carzy to do that but since it was my money I could do whatever I damn
pleased".
And did Jac personally groom The Wild Thing ?
" No, that's how they looked ! I found them playing in a little club and
that was their thing. They took hours to do their hair - which was hardly
surprising - but I thought they were interesting musically. Everybody
considered The Wild Thing to be my greatest lapse of taste, " but Holzman's
laugh suggest the regrets don't run too deep.
I remember buying the LP " Partyin' with " when it came out ( hey it was on
Elektra so I figured I oughta at least check it out ) and returning it the
next day for a I think the second Buddy Miles Express LP which was definately
better, which gives one an idea how bad The Wild Thing LP was. But I'll bet
if I heard the Wild Thing Lp today, I'd get a great nostalgic laff outta it
whereas that second Buddy Miles LP hasn't aged too well ( still like the
first one tho' ) around here. Somewhere I have an article on The Wild Thing
from Hit Parader around here but can't seem to find it. They sounded like a
zillion other discotecque dance bands at the time and looked like Wayne
Cochran on acid, with their hair ( which still looks like wigs to me or else
those guys must be responsible for half the hole in the ozone with the amount
of hairspray they musta used ) that reached up the ceiling and wore satin
ruffled shirts . Only two of 'em actually looked to be Chicano, the other two
looked like a big white Charlie Daniels lumberjack type guy with a beard and
moustache and the other was a skinny white guy with a bad goatee, who looked
like the kind a kid we used to beat up for his lunch money in the alley
behind the milk machine.
Looking at a pic of them today reminds me of a time in Key West a couple
years ago. I was walking by Margaritaville, and heard this great rockin and
rollin ' noise blastin' out of the place, which surprised me because I was
expecting to hear bad Jimmy Buffett tunes spewing from the place, and all I
heard in the other clubs was the usual house annd dance stuff. Anyway I go
runnning to check this great obviously live rockin noise out and there on the
stage are these guys that when I first looked at 'em I thought hey it's that
band Wild Thing, cuz they all looked like Wayne Cochran on acid or real
hopped up moonshine, or The Wild Thing as they had these HUGE white pompadour
wigs on. I realized quickly it wasn't, cuz these guys were really good !!!
It turned out to be The Strangemen from Boston ( didn't someone just post
that Wild Thing were from Mass also ? ) and I managed to coerece my friends
with beer ( who are into bad boy bands and teen divas and dance and house
stuff ) to stick around long enuff for me to buy their CD " Channel 2000 ".
As for The Wild Thing ...
They were groomed for the top, but it was a case of hair today gone tomorrow
....
                                                                Maureen

Then this morning as I open up Izzy's (after spending the night in the

sitting on the counter! Awful album ,all covers but I'm curious about them

Well said, Linda.

Besides... It's also possible that said friend will want to dig further
into the Pretty Things' discography.

Heck, that's how it worked for many of us (with a variety of groups). At
least a couple people I know were big fans of The Cramps and wanted to know
more about the songs they were playing. For others (including myself) it
was seeing a local band play great rock'n'roll and discovering who did the
originals either via the band or via college radio, etc., then getting the
records and finding whole new worlds opening up.

Personally, I just like trying to turn people on to things they haven't
heard.. Letting them know there's tons of other music out there besides
what they hear on the radio. In 1993, I'd blast the first Swingin'
Neckbreakers' LP for my then 12-year old cousin at full volume in the car.
We'd be drivin' home from the beach singing "Saturday's Best" at the top of
our lungs. When the Guns 'n' Roses cover of a Dead Boys' song came out, I
mentioned to him and his older brother that they oughtta hear the
original... And I played them a Dead Boys' tape. They loved it.

I've also turned some of my students on to garage/punk/power pop, etc.
Granted, not the large majority, but there's always some that are willing
to give things a listen. Most recently, that's been The Monks. Sure, some
kids think they're absolutely horrible, but a few others are absolutely
NUTS about "Complication". (Kinda like yours truly.)

- - Blair

(Oh yeah, this past summer I was singing Jonathan Richman's "I'm A Little
Airplane" to my then-18 month old niece. Over Christmas, my sis-in-law
mentioned that the song was on Sesame Street. And my soon-to-be 2 year-old
niece is in love with it.)

Dunno where they started, but by the mid 60's the Wild Things had
established themselves on the Tidewater, Virginia scene, played clubs, and
hooked up with Frank Guida of SPQR records. "Weird Hot Nights (Suffer
Baby)" came out in mid '66; by years end, they were on the road again, a
quick stop in NYC, then up to Beantown, where they resided for over a year.
They were a real band, not a label creation, etc.

Subject: Re: Wild Thing (Elektra) -- EEEEEK!!!

I recently got a copy of Fuz Brains #8 which has a brief interview with Wild
Thing guitarist Poncho Vidal from around 16 years ago. There's not much on their
early days, but some interesting stuff about the Elektra period. Some excerpts:

Rev. Joe (Fuz Brains): How did you come up with your hair style?
Poncho: We got it from Elvis. We started combing our hair like Elvis. As our hair
grew longer it started to look like this (pointing to a picture). The more we
teased our hair, the more it looked like one of those beehive hairdos. Our
manager bought boxes of hair spray to keep our hair in place.

Rev. Joe: How did you get up to New England [from Virginia]?
Poncho: Our drummer was from Milford. So, we ended up gigging out up here a
while.

Rev. Joe: How did you get on Elektra?
Poncho: Well, we were living in New York City. We built a reputation on our
image. We used to party with all the Village rock stars, The Chambers Brothers,
Jimi Hendrix....Elektra picked us up around that time.

Rev. Joe: How did your first album do?
Poncho: Not too well, I think it ended up being sold in grocery stores next to
the fruit and vegetable section. Right after the album, we changed our name to
the Bad Guys. We met up with some Hells Angels and started to party with them.
Then we got bad. Elektra was giving us a lot of advance money, so we were staying
at this luxury complex in Cambridge and partying with the Hells Angels. We
started doing reds, tequila, LSD; we ended up getting busted.

Rev. Joe: What happened?
Poncho: One day the Hells Angels didn't have a key to get into our apartment, so
they broke down two doors to get in. We weren't on good terms with the local
police, so they busted us.

Wild Thing recorded a second album but when they had a falling out with their
manager after the bust, Elektra decided not to release it, and the band split up.
