Ha, there's also a ton of Chubby Checker soundalike
twist records. I picked up "Do the Twist" by Tubby
Chess at a flea market last month.

And let's not forget The California Poppy Pickers...

Actually the single fades out before the "weirdo soloing". And I
wholeheartedly agree that the Zombie "flop" singles were just as commercial
as "She's Not There" & "Tell Her No". "Is this the dream" - What a Hook!!!

According to the Washington City Paper website, the, ahem..."Moonie" Suzuki is playing at the Black Cat on Saturday night (the 6th), with a band called "Beans".

I suppose if a group of Bompers wants to show up, I'd definitely dive in. However, I'm stuck defending some of y'alls freedom (gack) this weekend, so it would probably be a really bad idea....sick, tired, and NG...what a combo!

<<what's so wrong with using categories to give a general idea of sound
when talking about music on-list? is it so horrible to
describe/introduce something in the most basic, quick-to-the-point
terms like freakbeat, garage-rock, garage-punk, brit-r&b,
country-rock, soul, rockabilly, and so on? shit, it gives people a
basic idea of where the music falls and then with more research the
details of the sound fall into place. for example, if someone
mentioned the sorrows or the attack on list, and said they were a
freakbeat band, yeah, it would be pigeonholing them, but it would also
give a general idea to many of what they might sound like and if
they're worth investigating further.>>

While Nipper provided a great overview (and support evidence) in the
chain vs. indie store discussion in digest #9, I should have noted the
regional economic conditions in my "bottom line" sentence. The "$11 to
$14 range" for new domestic CDs is based on prices paid or seen at two
Tempe, AZ independents and one pseudo-independent record store. Like
citrus, rent, and home prices, new CDs at independents may be cheaper
here in the Phoenix area when compared to other major U.S. cities. At
this time, prices are lower here for many "commodities" due to wages
being below average for a major city.

Which reminds me, a fellow guitar player and myself were trying to come up

Our musical tastes are as far apart as the moon and Alfa Centauri, but we
did agree on these:

"Stairway To Boredom" (I say insert any Zep song, but this one makes me
vomit profusely)
"All Right Now"
"Layla" (the original is bad enough, but how about the prozac shufflebeat
rendition?)
"Whipping Post" (In my book, there is "blues", and then there is
"BLOOZ"...)
"Aqualung" (no comment)

There are a lot more, but these were across the board victors. And likely
your older brother's all time fave songs.

Hey all--Had a great time spinning records today with my buddy, Jim (he's
the rhythm guitarist in the punk band I play for, Big Meat Hammer, and he's
also station manager for WMPG). A big ol' tip of the Bomp bowler to James
Bond and Raymondo for tuning in and e-mailing in some requests, too!

Here's how we spent the afternoon:

Wipers--Land of the Lost
Spacemen III--Land of the Lost
Nobody's Children--Good Times
Volcano Suns--Nightmare County (they don't do too much for me, but I had
forgotten about the Mission of Burma connection--although MoB never did too
much for me, either-- a bit too artsy for me)
The Dirtbombs--Little Miss Chocolate Syrup
Jr. and the Soulettes--Momma Love Tequila (anyone know anything about them?
This was Jim's, and they look very cool--Jr. was 10, and his 3 Soulette
sisters 9, 7, 6 (IIRC) at the time of this recording!)
White Fluff--Vegatable Binge
13th Floor Elevators--I've Got Levitation ("live," lol)
T. Valentine--Hello, Lucille, are you a Lesbian? (hahaha; this actually
generated one complaint--not from a woman, but from some dude who apparently
doesn't realize that in street jargon, a "freak" is a way kinky chick!)
Fur--Sex Drive
Captain Beefheart & his Magic Band--Diddy Wah Diddy
The Troggs--Come Now
The Litter--Action Woman
The Parliaments--Fish & Chips
Hawkwind--Orgone Accumulator
Pink Fairies--Do It
NY Dolls--Who are the Mystery Girls
Music Machine--Talk Talk (request)
The Gonn--Blackout of Gretley
Richard & the Young Lions--You Can Make It
The Elastik Band--Spazz (a dedication!)
Edith Massey--Big Girls Don't Cry
The Fuzztones--Green Slime
Syd Barrett/Pink Flayd--Leave Lucy
The Driving Stupid--Horror Asparagus Stories
The Golden Cups--LSD Blues
Blue Cheer--The Hunter
Jimmy Castor--Hey Leroy, Your Mama's Calling You
DMZ--Boy From Nowhere
Blowfish--Live at the Rat promo (exceprt)
Monks--How We Do Now (live at Cavestomp)
Thee Michelle Gunn Elephant--Culture

and that, as they say, was that!

Jim's on every week in this slot (Thursdays from 3 pm-5 pm EST) on
www.wmpg.org and does a great show, so tune him in when you can!

On paper, the thought of a lone voice (Carl Craig) singing against an upright

Yes, I'm very much aware of what Italian 60's lovers think of Rita Pavone,
I've discussed this also a few years back with some members of The Others,
and some other Italian Bomper whom I don't remember the name, sorry! I
understand that you consider her oldies, because yes, she has done a lot of
crap, but come on! This one is a stomper! And yes, if it's got fuzz and
farfisa (or whatever comes close to a farfisa!) and if it rocks, it's
garage! And that's what Il Geguege has! I know she's a bore now, I've heard
her "modern" version of the song too, it sucks, but I was so happy when I
finally got that 45'!

I guess it's an exotic thing...I'd be just as perplexed if you would go apes
over an early Celine Dion album. Although not quite the same thing, believe
me...

The Zombies are one of the Top 5 British bands of all tyme, but I think
the reason they weren't more popular is because most of them looked kind
of daggy... although I'm thinking of the Beach Boys now...

I'm almost completely with you there, Mike. But "All Right Now" doesn't
bother me as much as "Hotel California". (But, then, that might be 'cuz of
certain guys I went to high school with who thought The Eagles were the
greatest thing ever.) And, as Mike knows due to a discussion on another
list, I rather like some Led Zeppelin stuff... But "Stairway To Heaven" may
be my most hated song of all time. Besides the fact that it's played a
gazillion times a day, the damn thing takes *forever* to actually GET
anywhere! If that Stairway is what it takes to get to Heaven, burning
forever is starting to look mighty good.

Man, Blair you hit my nerve, I loathe the Eagles, with "Hotel California"
being right up there with "Margaritaville" by JBuffett.
Someone mentioned "Brother Louie" by the Stories, I remember seeing them on
the Real Don Steele show or was it ABandstand?? Anyways, they appeared on
this special edition of one of those shows and looked like bikers meet the
longest haired hippies imaginable....pretty humorous acutally. I think Coven
of "One Tin Soldier" fame was also on there as well. Still remember girls
dancing to 'Devil w/a blue dress' and Real Don Steele throwing them in and
out of the dance ring and the cameraman went berserk with the zoom on the
camera. Tony

Subject: Hipsters bands wanted

Hey bompers,
We had a cancellation and are looking for a band to play Hipsters
Saturday Jan 13th in San Diego. I know it's very short notice, but if you
are in a 60's type combo and happen to be in the area, please email

uglythings@znet.com

It's a great venue to play at.

Thanks Tony

The first rock'n'roll show I ever attended was the Ramones with the Lewd
opening, Feb 3 1978. I never thought about it before, but I guess they were
the first rock group I ever saw live--but I really don't remember much about
them.

Enough of this talk about labelling this or that, let's get back to fun!!!
Hey, let's hear some of your most bomp-worthy TV faves!!!
Mine is definitely Astroboy, especially the one where the robots get
possessed by rock n roll aliens and start twisting to a most Ventures-like
cover of the Aboy theme song!!!
GA-ROOO-VEYY!!! I also remember one episode where the cartoon cavemen walk
accompanied by this drum beat that sounds like stripper music.

Since you asked, it was Lulu's "To Sir With Love."  This was Nov 4, 1967;
"Desiree" peaked that week at #98. I was an 8-year-old with a new
transistor radio (and now I'm a 41-year-old who got a book for Christmas
that reprints all Billboard's Hot 100 charts from the 60s). Also on the
chart that week:

#2 Sam & Dave--Soul Man
#3 Vikki Carr--It Must Be Him
#4 Soul Survivors--Expressway to Your Heart
#5 Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell--Your Precious Love
#7 Strawberry Alarm Clock--Incense & Peppermints
#16 Hombres--Let it Out (Let it All Hang Out)
#20 Buckinghams--Hey Baby
#58 Ohio Express--Beg, Borrow & Steal
