Hey Alan,

Don't go there. I unfortunately picked this up a while back and it's awful
boogie-rock. And I'm sure the Cavestomp '97 crowd wasn't exaggerating when
they unanimously declared it's re-creation an utter travesty.

Stick with the Raw & Alive in the Cellar CD recorded in the 60's.

Rocky.

Sixties vol.21' and noticed the original version of 'Baby I Still
Need Your Loving' by It's Them, as later covered by the Lyres (call me slow,
I own both records for something like a decade, but never noticed that I had
both versions).
Anyways what I'd like to know is if there is a better soundin' version of
the It's Them tune around somewhere, 'cause this version on
'Highs' sounds as it was taped off some MW radio show back in the 60s,
anybody knows ?, Mike ?.

Thanks,

Jeroen

Hey J,

Look for it on an upcoming "Teenage Shutdown"...I slotted that one for
inclusion, and it won't sound like it was recorded via a pay phone.
As soon as the Crypt empire settles their financial woes, Tim will start up
with releases again.
I know he sunk a lot of money into the new digs in jersey. He invited me
over, but I'm waiting until they get heat!

And the manager of current coolsters, the Greenhorns, was a member of It's
Them.
The Lyres also covered "A Girl like You" from the first It's Them record,
when they were called "THEM" ("Don't Look Now" / "A Girl Like You" released
on the King label in December, 1964). 'Them' were forced to change their
name due to the "national act" from Ireland, but from what I've been told,
the guys from the Cincy area kept playing locally as "Them", and the only
time the "It's Them" moniker was invoked was on the 2nd 45, "Baby (I Still
Want Your Loving)" released on the Toy Tiger label in late 1966.

I can't believe it's the DJ's on those stations that are to be blamed. (Not
completely, tho' they'd be better served keeping their mouths shut most of
the time.) It's gotta be the people making up the playlists... Some of the
DJs sound like they've loved some of these bands for so long. No way they
could be such big fans and only like a couple songs. Funny thing is, the
people they're playing the same stupid songs for are probably *also* big
fans of many of the groups, meaning *they* know the other tracks and
probably have favorites there.

Does the public want what the public gets?

ok, maybe this is too obvious, but has anyone mentioned the mighty REO
speedwagon? REO suckwagon? SUK shit-wagon? whatever. holy dog shit, did those
guys suck!! those guys were to 70s-midwestern-arena-rock-cliches what charles
schultz was to "peanuts." i am not sure that i can adequately describe the
sheer horror that was this band, that wussy guy with the big hair that sat at
the piano singing those power ballads, and that stupid-looking dickhead that
played lead guitar - i remember being about 8 and seeing them on TV and
thinking "jeez that guy is REALLY ANNOYING. why does he make those stupid
faces when he plays his guitar?"
to me REO and styx were to shitty 70s music what the beatles and stones
were to great 60s music - past fuckin MASTERS.

We're going to have to disagree. And I know there are people out there
who'll think I'm nuts, but I *like* Queen. (Well, OK, not the "Hot Space" -
or whatever it was called - era, but much of the earlier stuff.) Yeah, I
know it can be overblown, etc., but I really like some of their melodies
and the way everything came together. And I mean *really like* them.

I'm actually kinda glad The Mooney Suzuki aren't doing that Maxwells gig,
'cuz now I don't have to choose between them (w/The Gold Diggers - starring
JT & Dave from the O. Sins) and The Real Kids / Waldos who're supposed to
be at The Continental that night.

But I'm really bummed about the Friday night thing at the Bowery Ballroom
not happening. I think that would've been huge for them. But at least now I
can go up to the 107th floor of the World Trade Center that evening (1/12)
and see The Neanderthals.

Yes, yes!!! I have never been a Queen fan, aside from tolerating maybe a
couple of they're less bombastic and rocking tunes and even people I know
with outstanding taste, like my pal Art Fein, who generally likes mostly
rockabilly and swing stuff, loves Queen!! I find Brian May's guitar solos
kinda grating, and the psuedo-operetic sound of most of their stuff drives
me bonkers! And don't get me started on stuff like "Another One Bites The

I absolutely loathe REO as well. Several years ago the lead shrieker Gary
Richrath was supposed to play here in Ann Arbor at some fairly large venue
(him being such a big star 'n all), and the ticket sales were so pathetic
that the gig was cancelled. Old Gar', having nothing better to do, showed
up in town anyway - my then brother-in-law was managing the local Red
Lobster at the time, and got a photo of him and Gary together when he came
in for supper! It was very gratifying to think of this as some sort of
payback for all the pain he caused me with his awful music.

Yes, there stuff was reissued on CD last year. I don't remember who did it
but it is pretty widely available.

You're right about "Peace of Mind," but "Man's Gotta
Be A Man" was the B-side, not the A. "Goodbye Babe"
was the A-side.

I also have a Castaways LP with German Liner Notes from the early 90's
...even some of the song titles are in German! Sound quality is terrible
too! but it was just too weird to pass up...

What made performers back then THINK they could follow up a hit with a ripoff
of the same song? "Goodbye Baby" is obviously "Liar, Liar" turned inside out.
But I LOVE when artists (used to) do that, even if the followup was never a
TENTH as big as the hit. Other notable examples:

"These Boots Are Made For Walkin'" by Nancy Sinatra
<<spawned "How Does That Grab You Darlin'">>

"Vehicle" by the Ides Of March (UNDISPUTED BOMPLIST FAVE!!!) (heh heh)
<<spawned "Superman">>

"We're A Winner" by the Impressions
<<spun off "We're Rollin' On">>

"Land Of 1000 Dances," Cannibal & the Headhunters
<<"Nau Ninny Nau">>

"Let's Dance," Chris Montez
<<"Some Kinda Fun">>

"Wooly Bully," Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs
<<"Ju Ju Hand">>

"Get On Up," Esquires
<<"And Get Away">>

"Skinny Legs & All," Joe Tex
<<"Men Are Gettin' Scarce">>

"Simon Says," 1910 Fruitgum Co.
<<"May I Take A Giant Step Into Your Heart">>

"I'm Your Puppet," James & Bobby Purify
<<"You Can't Keep A Good Man Down">>

HONORABLE MENTION: The Turtles, who kept repeating themselves with different
songs ("It Ain't Me Babe" = "Let Me Be," "Elenore" = "You Don't Have To Walk
In The Rain," "Happy Together" = "She's My Girl," etc.)

IF IT AIN'T BROKE DON'T FIX IT: the Newbeats churned out several songs that
aped "Bread & Butter." Tony Joe White must have rewritten "Polk Salad Annie"
numerous times. Jumpin' Gene Simmons' self-titled Hi album included his 1964
hit "Haunted House"...plus other songs that reworked the same basic riff.

I've heard it, and apart from a version of "I Just Want To Make Love To You"
based on Foghat's rendition, I think its' pretty good. Keep in mind that this
is not exactly primal 1966 punk, but a few of these numbers wouldn't sound
out of place in the repertoire of Brownsville Station or some other
high-energy Detroit rock band of the period.

I recently lost a CD inside my CD player. It's one of those five disc players, and the disc must not have been slotted properly and slipped off the tray and into the mechanism. The CD player still works, and I don't really care about retrieving the CD (an "alternative" Xmas comp which I can certainly do without), but I'm wondering what kind of damage I might be causing by leaving a disc inside there. Can it cause an electrical fire? Is it worth attempting to open up or taking to a repair shop? Any thoughts or advice are quite welcome.

Thanks,

The first great album of 2001 is available now!

Simply titled "The Montgomery Cliffs", this third album by the Long
Island trio is a revelation. It jangles...It rocks...It pops...It's got
more hooks than Betty Page's lingerie. You'll need a crowbar to pry it
from your CD player. It's that good.

12 songs. 37 minutes. No hidden tracks. No padded extras. Just one of
the best albums you'll hear this year (or next) chockful of carbonated
jangle pop, muscular power pop, and anthemic rock, with a side trip or
two into Americana-land.

This is the one your ears have been craving for.

Ha, the one Mad Dog "classic" that kills me is that awful REO Speedwagon
song where the singer keeps going "doo doo doo da da doot" for what
seems like an eternity. Can't remember the title but it seems like it
had a street address in it or something.

Dog used to play a record everyday at 5 pm that he'd then "blow-up".
Usually it was some real stiff but occasionally (like the scmuck he is)
he'd blow-up something better than his entire playlist like the Go-Go's
"Head Over Heels".

About the only cool thing I ever heard him play was "Friday On My Mind"
every so often on a (what else?) Friday afternnon. In fact, I remember
him playing it about a dozen years ago, before I knew the song and being
so impressed with it that I immediately went out and found it on CD.

All of those are definitely on the Noise Junkie's
Extermination List of Horrible Music. Here are a few
more (in no order of "preference" (hahahahaha)).

1. Journey (Need I say more?)
2. Styx (Ditto).
3. Michael Bolton (The dunderhead DJ at my younger
brother's wedding played Bolton's version of "When A
Man Loves A Woman," instead of Percy Sledge's. It's
really sad that people only know these songs by
rip-off Bolton's versions. Die, Michael Bolton,
Die!!!)
4. Crosbutt, Stilted and Numbnuts, ooops, I mean
Crosby Stills and Nash...no wait, I was right the
first time.
5. Jethro Dull
6. John Cougar Menstrual Cramp (A BIG reason to hate
being from Indiana)
7. Rolling Stones "Steel Wheels" era and beyond (At
this point, they always sound like they're gonna keel
over and die. Let's hope it's soon.)
8. Richard Harris' "MacArthur Park" (7.5 minutes of
true self-pitying torture)
9. Barry Manilow
10. Almost all prog-rock bands, especially Emerson,
Lake and Palmer and Yes)
11. Starshit's "We Built This City" ("We sold out and
we're glad we did!")and "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now"
(woefully deserving to be the theme song of the
dreadful film "Mannequin")
12. Pat Boone (Hearing his version of "Ain't That A
Shame" has left a permanent imprint on my mind, and
not in a good way.)
13. Santana's latest, Grammy Award-winning pile o'
steaming crap.
14. Toto (Another in the "blandest of the bland"
sweepstakes)
15. Rush (Shows you anyone can have a career warbling
pseudo-philosophical songs in a bad Alvin Chipmunk
voice)
16. Gwen Stefani and No Doubt (This woman and this
band make me physically ill.)
17. Ricky Martin, Shitney Queers, Christina
Aguillera, Jennifer Lopez, Celine Dion, NSUCK,
Backstreet Boys, and all the rest of those pre-fab
plastic pre-teen pop acts. (Really makes you glad
you're not a teenager now, if this swill is all you
get.)
18. Motley Crue (self-explanatory)
19. Jackson Browne (Dullest of the dullest of the
dull. How anyone can register the slightest emotion
for this musical dullard is beyond me.)
20. Eiminem and Kid Rock (further examples of the
massive dumbing down of America's youth. Defend 'em
all you want, but I will not bow down at their
altars.).

Full of hate (as usual),
