Indeed, the Byrds and the Hollies were obviously well past their prime in

As I said earlier I love Free, but I am more than likely to switch the dial
when they play " All Right Now " cuz I've heard it a zillion times, now if
they'd play " The Hunter " or " Fire and Water " ... as for Queen, I love the
first LP, and bits of the second Lp and Sheer Heart Attack LP as well but I
think they lost it after that, a little too overdone and over blown ( no puns
intended ) for me, but their early stuff was great, AC 30's on ten an' all
!!! ... and CSN&Y, hey I like the first 2 LP's, and the live LP and a good
chunk of Neil Young's early solo stuff, and the first David Crosby LP is not
a bad LP either ( if someone told ya it was actually a lost session by ex -
members of The Byrds, Love, Moby Grape, Beau Brummels and other " kool "
artists and not Crosby with members of the Grateful Dead and Jefferson
Airplane, I think more people would actually dig it ). The actual problem
with a lot of what we hear by these bands is really that we all get sick of
hearing the same tracks over an over whenever we turn the radio on.
I seem to recall that many " Classic Rock " stations used to ( and many
still do I believe ) subscribe to a service that actually told them not only
what to play, but even what time of the day to play it. Before that time many
early FM Rock stations used to play an incredible variety of stuff in the
late 60's early 70's, and the DJ's even told ya what they were playing, this
if I remember correctly was before it became " Classic Rock ". This
programming format was what actually later developed into what is now known
as " Classic Rock ". And yes it is designed to appeal to the widest possible
mainstream demographic, because what it all boils down to is that the station
doesn't really care that a small percentage of their listenership may want to
hear something other and more than the 3 or 4 " approved " songs by an
artist, what the station really wants to do is appeal to the widest possible
demographic audience ( within that genre of music whatever it may be ) so
they can get good numbers in the ratings, so they can crank up the ad rates,
and sell waterbed, lasik eye surgery, and car etc etc ads. Which means that
we're gonna get stuck hearing " Turn the Page " Hotel California " "
Aqualung", " Money ", " Barracuda " Stairway to Heaven", " More Than a
Feeling "," Smoke on the Water " et al til they're bleeding out our ears. The
best solution is to just turn the damn radio off except to listen to the
traffic report, then jam a cassette or a CD ( or maybe an old Sabbath 8-
track ) into their respective players with something you really like on it,
so you don't have to hear stuff like Kansas and Foreigner and Toto and post
"Meddle" Pink Floyd and the rest of all that horrific stuff.
AUGH !!! I left my Dead Flowers Transworld tape back at the house !!!

I've heard this kind of thing before. If a DJ attempts to slip in a good
song, the station loses a thousand mindless listeners who won't hear the
next car sale ad. The sponsor pulls out, the DJ gets sacked, and a more
"compliant" guy is put in his place.
I've heard that international 'classic rock' playlists are determined by

Not after the time I went on a school trip to Italy and allthere was on the
planes stereo system was music provided from Columbia / Epic Records . The
rock music " channel " had The Hollies on it and tho' I loved the early
stuff like " Look Thru Any Window ", I think I must have heard " He ain't
Heavy " maybe 500 times, which was easily 600 times too many. Luckily me and
my friend got the "waitresses in the sky" to give us a mess of those little
bottles of scotch and gin which eased the pain considerably. On a happier
note, during the trip, we all went to Pompeii, and the tour bus had a small
record player in it ( with a tonearm that felt like it tracked at about 16
tons ), and the only records the driver had were The Zombies " Time of the
Season " and Deep Purple's version of "Hush ", so we got to hear them all
day. I even got to be DJ after waking up after zonking out from a drunken and
stoned stupor while tripping in the back of the bus, and upon seeing the
smoke from the funnels of the big ships in the harbor in Pompeii, I started
running up and the down the bus aisle yelling to everyone that the volcano
was gonna erupt. So I had to sit up front with the teachers and chaperones
for the rest of the trip that day until after we stopped for dinner and they
forgot about me after my friend Vinnie pulled an even sillier stunt.

after the immediate singles box & the disappointing planet records CD, i
am wondering if anybody knows if there has ever been a complete marmalade
reords discography put together? this label sounds like a prime candidate for
comprehensive reissuing - sounds like a lot of good stuff was on
marmalade...the blossom toes, brian auger & julie driscoll, & the odd
interesting-sounding single i've come across in the tapestry of delights
book. i wonder, though, if this wouldn't be a licensing nightmare; the
blossom toes stuff has only (that i know of) ever come out (legit) on a
long-outta print japanese CD, and that brian auger recently bought all the
rights back to his old stuff from whoever had owned them previously. does
georgio gomelsky still own the rights to all this music?
aside from the quality of the music, there is a historical angle to any
reissue of marmalade stuff, too, as this was one of the earliest british
indie labels.
anybody know anything about this? i haven't been able to turn up anything
on the web - not so far, anyway.

At least in my neck of the woods (Northern Virginia), virtually every radio
station has reverted to playing the same top 20 hits of whichever genre
they're peddling ... Regardless of whether you're listening to a '60s
station, '70s, metal, "alternative" (whatever that means), etc., its the same
old stuff day after day.

Coupled with the fact more and more bands seem to delight in sounding alike
(be they angry young white guys, angry rappers, or Faith Hill wannabes (my
personal vote for the greatest threat facing American society), it's no
surprise I seldom listen to commercial radio anymore.

This probably sounds kind of dumb, but I truly miss the days when radio
wasn't nearly as regimented. I can remember hearing DJs play Zepplin, Al
Green and Roger Miller back to back. Mind you I'm not a big Zepplin or
Miller fan, but it was kind of neat not knowing what you'd hear next. These
days you can probably guess what the next song in the rotation is likely to
be ...

Kudos to Jon Weiss and Blair who stood up for those of us who found the fast
loud rockin' side of Queen quite refreshing in the early to mid 70s. As a
junior high degenerate in that era I found rock n' roll salvation in songs
like Death On Two Legs and Sheer Heart Attack (found on the News Of The

rockers were penned by drummer Roger Taylor. Brian May's wall of VOX amp

recorded. So there!

Here in the Baltimore/Washington area, we have a station that
proclaims it's "progressive, free form". No playlists; dj-driven. Sounds promising,
huh? Well, it's butt-awful. The house band (as they call it )
is the Grateful Dead. And ALL the DJs absolutely
go ga-ga over jam bands... it's a steady diet of Phish, Government
Mule, Widespread Panic with some boring blues and Sarah
McLachlan-type breathy female singers thrown in... get the
picture?

You'd think a radio station that is truly progressive and
free form would hire a DJ with different musical taste, but nooooo.
To be fair, some of the DJs will play Bomp-worthy tunes here and
there, but it's not worth the torture to have to listen to all the
other crap in the meantime. Ya know, I'd almost rather listen to classic
rock -- at least I can tune that out, but that jam-band stuff makes me
feel like ripping off my head and throwing it at the radio.

there's no doubt in my mind he's put out some great
albums over the years: "Rust Never Sleeps,"
"Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere," "Re-Ac-Tor,"
"Freedom, "Ragged Glory," "Tonight's The Night," etc.
I love that guitar sound he has when he and Crazy
Horse decide to rock out. He has put out some bad
music over the years (who hasn't?), but when he's at
the top of his game, there's no one else like him.

Okay, flame away!

I'm not as down on Queen as a lot of people, either,
because while they had a lot of excesses (I can live
50 lifetimes without ever having to hear "Bohemian
Rhapsody" again), they've also got moments that
explode, like "Sheer Heart Attack" (off "News of the
World") and "Tenement Funster" (off "Sheer Heart
Attack"). So, yeah, they have their good points.

I know you disagree, Brian, about adding Queen...but if we add Queen, Led
Zeppelin, Elton John, and Foreigner to your list...I think it's a pretty
DEFINITIVE Classic Rock Suck List. I can't believe I forgot to mention Rush
and Queen. AAARRRGGHHHH!!

1. Journey (Need I say more?)
2. Styx (Ditto).
3. Michael Bolton (The dunderhead DJ at my younger
brother's wedding played Bolton's version of "When A
Man Loves A Woman," instead of Percy Sledge's. It's
really sad that people only know these songs by
rip-off Bolton's versions. Die, Michael Bolton,
Die!!!)
4. Crosbutt, Stilted and Numbnuts, ooops, I mean
Crosby Stills and Nash...no wait, I was right the
first time.
5. Jethro Dull
6. John Cougar Menstrual Cramp (A BIG reason to hate
being from Indiana)
7. Rolling Stones "Steel Wheels" era and beyond (At
this point, they always sound like they're gonna keel
over and die. Let's hope it's soon.)
8. Richard Harris' "MacArthur Park" (7.5 minutes of
true self-pitying torture)
9. Barry Manilow
10. Almost all prog-rock bands, especially Emerson,
Lake and Palmer and Yes)
11. Starshit's "We Built This City" ("We sold out and
we're glad we did!")and "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now"
(woefully deserving to be the theme song of the
dreadful film "Mannequin")
12. Pat Boone (Hearing his version of "Ain't That A
Shame" has left a permanent imprint on my mind, and
not in a good way.)
13. Santana's latest, Grammy Award-winning pile o'
steaming crap.
14. Toto (Another in the "blandest of the bland"
sweepstakes)
15. Rush (Shows you anyone can have a career warbling
pseudo-philosophical songs in a bad Alvin Chipmunk
voice)
16. Gwen Stefani and No Doubt (This woman and this
band make me physically ill.)
17. Ricky Martin, Shitney Queers, Christina
Aguillera, Jennifer Lopez, Celine Dion, NSUCK,
Backstreet Boys, and all the rest of those pre-fab
plastic pre-teen pop acts. (Really makes you glad
you're not a teenager now, if this swill is all you
get.)
18. Motley Crue (self-explanatory)
19. Jackson Browne (Dullest of the dullest of the
dull. How anyone can register the slightest emotion
for this musical dullard is beyond me.)
20. Eiminem and Kid Rock (further examples of the
massive dumbing down of America's youth. Defend 'em
all you want, but I will not bow down at their
altars.).

May I also add to the Queen Shit Parade "We Will Rock You", the wonderful
piece of crap they cut with David Blowmie - "Under Pressure", and that disco
delight "Another One Bites The Dust", and finally, their tenth rate attempt
at Rockabilly "Crazy Little Thing Called Love".

Hey now...that was a song by the mighty Blue Oyster Cult off their second
(and dare I say it) classic album "Tyranny and Mutation",. It's my fave
BOC record, but I like most of 'em. And considering the long list of
stinker classic rockers, I'd say "Don't Fear the Reaper" holds up pretty
well as an exception.

As for REO Speedwagon, Lenny is sorta correct in that they were more
straight hard rock (albeit with keyboards) long before they hit it big with
the awful power ballad stuff. I honestly don't mind the early Speedwagon.

I know I possess way too much knowledge (and quite a few records) about all
this 70's rock stuff, but as I've mentioned before, we've all taken
slightly different paths to the garage (or wherever Bomp-worthy place we
happen to be at now).

wishin' folks got to hear "Stairway To The Stars" instead of "Stairway to
Heaven".

Ah yes...one of the worst Beatles moments. I hated that repetitious ending
(over 7 minutes on AM)!). And unfortunately, Lennon *repeated* the formula
on "Give Peace A Chance". AAAAArRRRRGGGGHHHHH!

It was announced years ago in "ICE" magazine that
"Re-Ac-Tor" was supposed to come out on CD, along with
a few other albums, but so far, it hasn't
materialized. Of course, that one cries to be out on
CD. Until then, I still got my vinyl copy I got for
Christmas when I was 17.

Yes, it is on Plum. I have it, and it was a huge disappointment. The first
couple of singles and B's are good(though not as great as "Liar Liar").
After that, the quality drops off considerably. I'm not too crazy about the
Fontana singles. Bit the worst is yet to come. This Cd is padded out with a
bunch of horrible "contemporary" tunes. This is culminated by the godawful
"Liar Liar 2000". Yes, it is as bas as you can imagine.

If you were thinking of buying this thing, I seriously consider listening to
it first, if possible.

I have an old issue of Musician magazine from about 1979 where Metheny
mentions his childhood faves as not only being the usual crew of jazzbos, but
also "She's Not There" by the Zombies and "Dirty Water" by the Standells! I
ain't saying he's a closet garage-rocker*** or anything, but between this
fact and the anti-Kenny G campaign, Metheny gets a beer on me. (And if it
means anything to you, the article was written by Dan Forte, a/k/a surf
guitarist Teisco Del Rey.)

James
***Metheny did release an album called AMERICAN GARAGE, with a cover photo of
what looks like stainless steel trailer homes.

As pointed out, a song can be well-crafted and still
suck. Good for you if you like it. We "hipsters"
always need someone to stick it to us. Sounds to me
like if you need to be straightened out on something
like that, you're incapable of making up your own mind
in the first place.

Oh, I'm sorry, you were being sarcastic. Wouldn't
have guessed it since your tome sounds as whiny as it
does.

Now, let's all get out our incense and love-beads and
stand in a circle holding hands, while The Grateful
Dead plays a half-hour long version of "Turn On Your
