Oasis Singer More Hated Than Saddam

LONDON (Reuters) - Swaggering Oasis singer Liam
Gallagher is hated more than Iraqi President Saddam
Hussein, according to a popularity poll published
Friday.

The survey by Madame Tussaud's, the company famous for
its waxworks museums, placed Gallagher just behind
Adolf Hitler and former Serbian leader Slobodan
Milosevic (news - web sites) on its most-hated
personality list.

Gallagher, whose quickfire temper has led to shouting
matches with flight attendants, fans, fellow pop stars
and the media, last year divorced from his wife,
actress Patsy Kensit.

Hussein, who led Iraq into the 1991 Gulf War and
topped the most hated or feared poll last year,
finished fourth on this year's list.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair (news - web sites),
dogged by a recent slide in popularity at home,
finished fifth behind Hussein. Blair was a no-show on
the favorite politician list, which was topped by
outgoing U.S. president Bill Clinton.

For the survey, Tussaud's asked more than 800 visitors
to vote in eight separate categories for personalities
who have been immortalized in wax in one of its
museums.

Britain's Princess Diana, killed in a 1997 Paris car
crash, retained her title as the favorite figure
category, but lost to actress Catherine Zeta Jones
(news - web sites) in the most beautiful person
category.

Pop singer Robbie Williams, who is embroiled in an
ongoing war of words with Liam Gallagher, won in the
hottest superstar, favorite entertainer and favorite
artist categories.

Williams, who has topped pop charts in Britain with
his radio-friendly sound, recently challenged
Gallagher to a televised boxing match with the
proceeds going to charity.

1) Excuse me if someone else said this already, but I think it was Blue
Oyster Cult who did the "O.D." song. And they were good, once---I'm no BOC
expert, but I kinda like their earlier stuff, pre-"Don't Fear The Reaper."

2) And yes, REO did start out as your typical speedway hard-rock band before
they got so slick. The only reason I have their second album is because of
"Golden Country," an extended guitar showcase which is like an American
"Stairway To Heaven." I have no use for the band after this (and a 1979
guilty pleasure called "Only The Strong Survive"). Minus these two, I agree
with most everyone else on this list that they stink!

Yup, it's called "Mr. T's Commandments" and if I'm not mistaken, it
was produced by Ice T. It's one of those things I look for every
now and then on ebay but can never seem to find. I remember hearing
one of the songs from it years ago and thinking it would be a fun

Which reminds me of ANOTHER idiotic game invented to relieve the tedium of
record store inventory (much easier to play the 'Da Midnite Special')
Take any song title and replace the word 'Love' with 'Lunch' (yeah, you can
do it with band names, too)
Loverboy=Luncherboy
Love to love you baby=Lunch to lunch you baby
He lost his love on our last date=
well, you get the idea. I know it's STUPID even adolescent, but if you hit
just the right title, the results can leave you unable to breathe.

Bingo. Here's the awful truth: I've seen both sides of this badly-weighted
coin firsthand. Anyone in the NY area who's of, ahem, "a certain age" will
remember my cousin Pete Fornatale. He started at WNEW-FM in 1967...back when
the DJs played whatever the hell they felt like. They actually kept this
wonderful moment for about five years until everything got rigidly formatted.

As it happens, one of the, uh, "pioneers" of the Rigid-Formatting movement
was Peter Salant....a guy who I actually played in a band in high school
with. He became a "Programming Consultant" and made a whole lot of money. I
think he probably still does it, unless he's retired.

some of the opera that they threw in. I guess maybe it's the two sounds
mixed together, the harmonies & stuff mixed with the hard rock of the music.
Not that the bands are similar, but
TRex and Sweet had the same thing going on. It's kinda like a musical tease,

seriously, the public gets what the folks in charge think they want...and
since most aren't as adventurous as the folks on this list, they put up with
the lesser of many right of the dial options. Factor in the large companys
which own several stations in one market (infinity broadcasting owns 7-8
stations in NYC alone) and it makes for a pretty homogenous spew coming out

Subject: Re: Ides of March

Alan, you are correct in throwing around the wimp rock label regarding
the early Ides of March, but the band surpassed this moniker (and their
dorky image) to produce some great garage pop as heard on the Sundazed
reissue. First, I cannot understand why "Girls Don't Grow on Trees" was
not one of the bigger hits of the mid-sixities (and also now with the
current garage scene). It begins with a "Western Union" guitar intro
and then bursts into one of those bright and catchy 50,000 watt Windy
City choruses. The song rides off into the unseen sunset with galloping
guitar chords like last heard on "Come on Down to My Boat" by Every
Mothers' Son. Its sound (and universal sentiment) is strong enough that
it's possible to imagine this flash of brilliancy being modified to meet
both Muzak and hard-core punk standards. Both the mono and stereo
versions of "Girls Don't Grow on Trees" are available on "Ideology."

The rest of the disc presents the Ides as a pretty versatile and
sometimes compelling '60s pop band. The harmonies, modulations, and
creative bridges have the strength to take listeners beyond the
redundant. While lead singer Jim Peterik is no Steve Marriott, the
exuberance levels of their Dave Clark 5-ish "Sha-La-La-La-La-Lee" would
not be met until the Japanese band Sunnychar covered the same song some
thirty years later.

The mis-steps include the "Out of Limits" riff-off (that was so common
back then) found on "I'll Keep Searching," a less than stellar take on
the daunting (made world famous by the Walker Brothers) "The Sun Ain't
Gonna Shine Anymore," and the inept and pedestrian "Like It or Lump It."
If you can put up with some wimp factor and moments of brass, you will
be rewarded with some of the best garage pop to come out of Chicago's
exciting mid-sixties era--when these sounds were floating around on the
WLS & WCFL airwaves and moving the kids from Evanston to Evansville.

I hope you and Tim get into high gear real soon again with the TS

Like You" released on the King label in December, 1964). 'Them'
were forced to change their name due to the "national act" from
Ireland, but from what I've been told, the guys from the Cincy area
kept playing locally as "Them", and the only time the "It's Them"

something different, I want to barf. F the hippies, ahahhaha DC has not had a
decent station in years, and despite having many colleges in the area, has no
decent college stations either(I know most stink, but at least you have a
chance to hear something good every few semesters on College Radio). My tape
player in the car got gaffed up two weeks ago, it is torture!

They (along with The Other Side from Pottstown) were THE band to see! Hartman
would pre-tape his guitar parts on an echoplex and play harmony with himself!
They sounded even better live than on their records, and used to play local
teen clubs like The Country House, Railroad House, and Dillsburgs'
Psychorama. They were especially adept at playing anything, and even though
only a three piece, could do Beatles to Iron Butterfly (almost all area
bands played covers...The Legends were one of a very few who played a tiny
amount of originals...the others was East Coast Left and Loose Enz). Another
thing that stood out about the Legends was that they all were pretty
straight...I was seeing these guys between 1968 and 1970, and Dan and Joe
Callerio (the bassist) kept their hair pretty short for the time , which was
not the norm at all (Other Side looked VERY freaky, as did the
Morrison-inspired singer for the Shades of Doubt).

I think Metheny made a cd of skronky guitar noise, I can never remember the
title though. I wouldn't mind picking that up, I think it is similar to
Sonic Youths more Avant stuff.
Neil YOung good, David Crosby bad! I love Reactor, I think it is one of the
lps Neil Doesn't want to have come out on cd, he says it won't sound right. I
despise David Crosby for many reasons, and if I was so inclined, a bullet to
the back of his head would not be out of the question. I try to ignore him,
but when I play some Byrds stuff, I seem to hear Triad, easily one of the
worst songs commited to vinyl or Kompakt disk. The selfish sentiments in the
lyrics of that song make me want to puke. Coffe was really strong today, I am
really venting!

I KNOWWWW, I KNOWWWWW (LOVE BOC)... Freudian slip!!! I meant "Dead at

band that went on to do bloated piano rock! Hell, it ain't EASY remembering

misattribute Bloodrock's DOA to 'em, too!).

You know, I'm less likely to spin his CSNY and Crazy Horse stuff than the
rest of it (love Buffalo Springfield, the rockabilly thing he did with the
pink suits where he covered Mystery Train, and yes, I liked the Rust Never

tune from that lp with Pearl Jam (haven't heard the rest of it, but the one
that got airplay here was ok (sounded like Neil, not like PJ)... admire him
for having Sonic Youth open for him (I HATE them, but I admire him for doing
it; challenged the fuck out of his audience) and to be honest, don't think
I'd find myself SPINNING "Trans" BUT... I admire him for trying it... he
just hasn't seemed to get OLD and STUCK like so many of his peers... I'll
admit I don't own much or any of the stuff I just copped to liking, but
credit where it's due, I respect him...

Never understood why people would call BOC a 'secret'
pleasure. Come on! You don't have to be ashamed! I always
kinda saw them upthere with Alice and the Stooges (with whom
they played). OK, that might be to much praise (probaly read
too many 'Black to comms'), but really i think they're one
of the greatest, dare i say it, early 70s protopunk bands,
and yeah, i know their later stuff pretty much sucks. But
the stuff they did as Stalk Forest Group or those live '71
recorings, wowie. And i even think 'This ain't the summer of
love' is pretty punkrock (well, probably because it's a song
by the mighty Imperial Dogs)

ps. oh yeah, radio birdman did some boc songs and got their

(Note to self: I never thought I'd spend even 30 seconds of my adult life
defending Queen, and it stops after this. This is a promise I make to
myself, my friends, and family.) Yeah, Roger Taylor did write (and sing high
harmonies) on many of their songs. The song "Sheer Heart Attack" alone,
would've been enough to earn them honorable mentions had they stopped right
there. It's a scathing sonic assault that predates speed metal by...oh, only
a decade or so. Legend has it, that after seeing his first "punk" band in
some pub enhanced by some very serious drinking, Roger staggered home to his
state of the art recording facility (remember, these are "rock stars" we're
talkin' about) and tossed off Sheer Heart Attack to show the "kids" how it
oughta' be done- if it was to be done at all. To this day, I've never heard
any band even attempt a serious cover of it. What a great song!

Now back to our regularly scheduled programming: Can anyone tell me more
about The Heathen's out of Youngstown, OH, who in 1966 put out the 45 "She
Did Me Wrong" b/w "Why, Why?, Why?" on the local label, Soaptown Records, of
which only 200 copies were pressed?

Count me out of the anti-Pat Benatar camp. She's a guilty pleasure of mine. I still love "heartbreaker" and "hell is for children". And I'll admit to liking a few of Heart's songs, before their 1980s revival.

another reason to take Pat Metheny off the most hated
list: abhout 5 or 6 years ago, he made an album so
good that his label refused to release it. although it
is not bompworthy per se, it is an excellent
guitar-noise album if you are so inclined to that type
of thing.

I think that album was called "Zero Tolerance For
Silence" and it was released on Sonic Youth's label.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

Be there!

Bzzzt! Wrong answer. It was written by Stephen Stills.
Maybe you're thinking of "Woodstock"?

BTW, I was wrong, it was written by Stills for Judy
Collins, an old flame of his. I was thinking of "Our
House", which Graham Nash wrote for Joni Mitchell.
It's tough keeping track of who was banging who in
that circle...
