Which begs the question: How many LP/singles do you all think a band or
an artist have in them before they tank artistically/stylistically? I'm
talking on average. There's an awful lot of "I digs" with the qualifier of
liking the "early stuff" or "before the <insert title here> LP" when you see
such threads arise on The List. I'm guilty of this myself. I say EVERY
band that's been together a year or so has at least one LP's worth of good
stuff (say 12-14 songs with 1/2 being originals and the other 1/2 being
covers that they've mutated into originals...)

I did a search on Allmusic.com and some other web sites, but there was
limited info on them. However, I did find out that they recorded for GNP
Crescendo Records and a "Best Of" is still in-print! It was also
interesting to discover that Kim Fowley handled their arrangements. I
just read about Joe's tragic auto death in 1966.

I know I recignize that voice! So I peek around his shoulder to get a look
at his face...but I'm blinded by the gold chains!!! Mr.T at a Hockey Game in
Calgary??? Anyway...half way through the game they train the cameras on
Mr.T, and send some guy down with a mike to talk to him. So there's Big T on
the big screen in the middle of the arena...they ask him "So what do you
think Calgary's chances are of beating Anahaim tonight?"...and T replies
"Lemme just say...If anyone thinks Anaheim is gonna win...I PITY THE FOOL!".
Classic!!! Not being hockey fans...we spent the game videotaping Mr.T...

Just heard something on NewsRadio 88 here in the NYC metro area about a
poll taken in Great Britain dealing with songs people could do without ever
hearing again. It seems 100,000 people were polled about the very subject
we've been discussing lately. Their choices included tracks by Elton John,
Celine Dion, and The Spice Girls. So, I wonder, what will be the result of
this poll's findings?

Some more:

SOUL SURVIVORS: Expressway To Your Heart* = Explosion In Your Soul (the
B-sides were better)
JEWEL AKENS: The Birds & The Bees = Georgie Porgie
STEAM: Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye = I've Gotta Make You Love Me = What
I'm Saying Is True
LITTLE MILLIE SMALL: My Boy Lollipop = Sweet William
BILL DEAL & RHONDELS: May I = I've Been Hurt
MARVIN GAYE: Can I Get A Witness = Ain't That Peculiar
GEORGE McCRAE: Rock Your Baby = I Get Lifted (the disco sound alike list
would be a mile long)

*"Expressway To Your Heart" and "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me" (DeeDee
Warwick/Madeline Bell/Supremes & Temptations) are in some ways the same
song. Did Gamble & Huff get lazy? That "shower you with love and
affection" bit is in both!

interviews that the springfield set and "decade 2" or whatever he's calling
it now will be out "some time." yeah right! i wish he would put the stuff out
already. i first remember him mentioning the decade 2 set in the 80s. now
it's supposed to be something like a 10 disc set with a video or something
like that.
there was quite a lot of discussion on the byrds newsgroup a while back
about a release date for the springfield set - maybe someone there has a
better idea of what's up w/ this. i am about this close to ordering the
stampede bootleg from midnight, except it's listed on the website, which is
about as good as assurance as possible that it's not in stock.
oh well, back to "buffalo springfield again" for the millionth time!
i do run across some springfield outtakes and stuff on napster from time
to time; it's worth a look, while we're waiting (and waiting).

There ought to be a "Songs we Taught the Lyres" comp (is there?)...looks like
it'd be a double-record.

Judy Collins got those cool eyes. I'd give her the hose, even today.
Mary Travers, maybe twenty years ago when PP&M got back together but not
now, unless she hits the gym. Joan Baez, Diamond and Rust era with
shoulder length hair, yeah, but not now. Joni Mitchell? Alex and I could
tag team her and get all the neuroses out of her system.

Judas Priest actually covers Diamonds and Rust (!). Joan Armatrading?
Only if she has nice feet.

Maybe theyll sing on my solo LP, MJ and the Fabulous Facials Sing Songs

Well, in response to something-or-other, I characterized the early Blue
Oyster Cult as one of my favorite "Guilty Pleasures", and got this answer:

<< Never understood why people would call BOC a 'secret' pleasure. Come on!
You don't have to be ashamed! >>

Well, I used the wrong term, maybe. Not a bit ashamed! You did have to
laugh off the Meltzer/Pearlman lyrics to some extent, but those first three
LPs (especially "Tyranny & Mutation") are just some of the best stuff EVER.
They used to play very frequently in NYC at the "Academy Of Music", (later
the "Palladium") on 14th Street. Saw 'em there several times. They were
fabulous. And it's quite correct to opine that without those 3 albums, we
would never have had Radio Birdman.......at least not in the form it took.

"Pain" is by Arizona's own Phil and the Frantics, the flip to the Rabbitt
pressing of "I Must Run." It's also on Bacchus Archives' Phil and the
Frantics CD compilation (recently reissued in Spain as a nifty vinyl 10-inch
record). "If You Want My Love" is probably the Nightcrawlers' song, but I'm
too unfamiliar with the Lyres catalog to hazard guesses about the others.

I love T-Bone myself. I used to torture my guitar player from my first
band with that riff. "Got mashed potatoes / Ain't Got No T-Bone" That's
all the lyrics for about 6-8 minutes or so. Also Shots was great. It was
once played on Heavy Metal From Hell on WBCN! Southern Pacific got
airplay in Boston. That's what made me buy the album. I remember an
article about Neil in Record Colector (I think) and it charted Neil's
albums in terms of popularity with his fans. His career had a ton of ups
and downs. The interesting thing about Reactor was that many thought it
sucked, while many others thought it was genius!

Subject: Tarred With The Queen's Brush

........well, Jon's post last night inadvertently made it look like it was **
I ** doing the Queen-bashing.......no no no! He and I have, however,
disagreed in the past (at length) over which Queen Era was the most
sublime........Weiss favors the "News Of The World" time, specifically the
song "Sheer Heart Attack", and frankly that's about where I was getting OFF
the bus.......I love the hippy-drippy songs on "Queen II" and especially the
killer rockers on the LP "Sheer....."......for God's sake, if "Stone Cold
Crazy" and "Now I'm Here" don't move you, you can't really be listening past
all the baggage......

And, about that baggage: Jon is quite correct in affirming that the whole
airy-fairy-opera thing was a big joke that most of us just didn't get. I
mean, Freddy DID put out a solo record under the name "Larry
Lurex"........BEFORE Queen hit big. Also, I saw them in January of
1976......literally one week after "Night At The Opera" came out, so
"Bo***ian Rh***ody" wasn't a big deal yet (thank goodness)......they really
were a lot of fun, and taking the piss out of themselves quite frequently
throughout the show.......the encore was a vampy cover of "Hey Big Spender"
segueing into a frenetic double-time "Be-Bop-A-Lula"......at warp
speed.....played just exactly the way the British punks would have played it
MANY MANY MONTHS later.......Freddy was wearing a bathrobe and Roger was
wearing one of those multicolored George Clinton wigs. I have pictures!
This is NOT a band taking itself too seriously!

This made it all the more upsetting for me when they put out crap like "We
Are The Champions", "We Will Rock You" and "Radio GaGa." They really did
seem bloated and irrelevant by then. Or maybe that was ANOTHER joke that we
didn't get.

Oh well,
"Keep Y'self Alive!"

Only version I know of this was by Sandy Sargent (hope I spelled her last
name right)--cute as a button with some dynamite moves, too!

And what about "Zebra In the Kitchen"? (Standells, from the movie of the
same name).
