When Les Sexareenos go back please give them a big
round of applause as they had to face all sort of
handicaps during their Spanish tour ans still managed
to play smashing shows. Especially that New Year's Eve
one, I never danced so much!! I was nearly dead but
that didn't stop them... As someone pointed out it
felt great to dance with "White Light/White heat"!

Once I was in a train and there was a very normal
looking guy with a walkman in front of me. He went to
the toilet and I told my girlfriend "I'm sure he is
listening to Dire Straits". "Nah, how can you tell"
she said. Later the guy went to the toilet and left
his walkman on the seat. I grabbed it and checked what
it was... I was right!!!

I actually love "Don't Fear the Reaper" it reminds me a bit of the Byrds,
Moody Blues (post Denny Laine stuff) or the Enfields  for that matter;
although, I could do without the guitar break.

Actually, this happened in my area a couple of years ago. This atrocious
classic album station got together about 50 of us in a hotel ballroom in
suburban Kansas City and had us "grade" the results of their playlist. They'd
play three or four-second snippets of a song and we were supposed to circle in a
number that corresponded to how we felt about it. #1 was something like Really
Like It and #5 equalled Hate It, Take It Off The Air with 2, 3 and 4 being
gradations in between. Suffice to say that about 90% of my marks fell into the
'5' category.
After a couple of hours of this and also after many others had already left,
someone FINALLY asked those of us remaining what we'd like to hear that wasn't
on their little pre-approved list. But we couldn't write it down and give it to
them; instead we had to shout out song titles and hope that someone took a
mental note. Well my voice doesn't carry too well and am sure that my plea for
the Stooges went unheard.
Of course this all came to naught as I heard no noticeable difference in formats
since then. Oh well, for a weekday morning's "work" we got $50 and a t-shirt.

I can go along with that (well I guess not the killing people part). Also no
one's mentioned the mid-70s Fleetwood Mac which got way too much airplay
then. Guess people here like them, but I sure don't, especially considering
how they used to sound. Sorry, but as attractive as Stevie Nicks is (or
was), if I hear that Thunder Only Happens When It's Raining song, I can't

True, the first Queen album was pretty rockin'. They lost me after that. And
saying that Queen was into self parody may be engaging in a lil bit of
revisionist history. As for Oasis,I saw them at Jones Beach in 1996 and they
were a good rock 'n' roll band. As far as their "bigger than The Beatles"
statements those Gallagher brothers make, how much publicity mileage do you
think they've gotten outta that remark?! Guess the point is to be
adored, abhored, but never ignored. They had two good albums and now
unfortunately their music pales before this LARGER THAN LIFE image that they
created for themselves. "Bigger than the Stone Roses" might be more
accurate-ha ha.--Nancy Neon

It was actually written by Bruce Johnson!

Hi Gang,

"Feelin' No Pain" was by the Del-Satins (Columbia
42802, 1963).They did the backup vocals on Dion's
post-Belmonts records. If I remember rightly Dion
wrote or co-wrote the song.

'There was a 'Never Be Free' by Dale & the Debonaires on IGL, so that
could be who the Lyres are covering there. I admit to having never heard
anything by the Lyres, however.

I not only like Mike Fornatale's fave Queen era in addition to Jon Weiss'
preference, but I enjoy stuff beyond those. Yeah, I happen to like tracks
off Queen's "Jazz" LP (and not just 'cuz of the poster that made me a happy
teenager). That's right, I *like* "Fat Bottomed Girls". As for "The Game"
LP, I understand some people not liking "Another One Bites The Dust" (which
was originally meant as a Country & Western number, but... it mutated), but
somehow it's stuck in my cranium. As to the what some have called a
horrible attempt at r'billy w/"Crazy Little Thing Called Love"... It's not
great, but I like it. Easy to sing along with and, at least they seemed
like they were having fun.

But, yeah, I'd rather listen to "Keep Yourself Alive", "Sheer Heart
Attack", "You're My Best Friend", and "Tie Your Mother Down".

(Who also admits to enjoying "Under Pressure", the track they recorded
w/Bowie when both were in the same studio doing their own records.)

I'm right with you there, Andrea! I loved both those songs and other Pat
Benatar songs, too. Although I can't stand Pat Benatar's "later stuff" (like
she had such a long career) like, "Love is a Battlefield" where she and the
other trashbagwearin' dancers are doin' what JJ calls the "Shirley Feeney"
dance (aka not "THE Boob" but shakin' the boob dance). And even though
Heart's "Even It Up" is WAY overplayed on said classic rock crud stations, it
still stands up as a good song.

Not really a Benatar fan myself, but... It *could* be said she had a long
singing career - if you count her time doing opera.

Melissa and I used to work in a vegetarian health food deli in Tuscaloosa,
AL. Don't laugh, Alex Chilton was a regular customer.

Our motto-"Do a little dance, make a little lunch, get down to Manna."
There were T-shirts made, but that was after we moved to Huntsville.

We also had buttons that said "All you need is lunch" and "Wanna whole lotta
lunch"!

On the lunch train,
Kip

P.S. 'Drugs' is a good replacement for 'Love' (or 'Lunch') Kinda like real

Subject: Mid-sixties South FLA :the Wrecker Bar(was sucko states & music)

I was recently listening to a reelradio.com WQAM Miami aircheck from
1966, when an ad for the Wrecker Bar really caught my attention. I
remember finding and wearing a Styrofoam Wrecker Bar hat at my grandma's
house when I was a little kid. I always thought it was a "bar" bar.
Anyone (Lemlich?) have any additional info and/or stories about this
Coral Gables record store? The ad comes in at the 10:23 mark on the
RealPlayer:

http://www.reelradio.com/gk/index.html#rswqam66

Listening to these airchecks makes you wish you grew up in mid-sixties
Miami. South Florida had some great boss radio that created and
reflected the excitement of the times and area. After hearing Dinos
play "2s Better than Three" by the Maundy Quintet on his "Our Little
Rendez-vous" radio show, I'm going to check out that Florida
"Psychedelic States" comp from Gear Fab.

Going up I-75, Michigan is responsible for three of the biggest sucko
songs: "Hotel California," "Turn the Page," and "Old Time Rock & Roll,"
due to the fact that Glenn Fry and Bob Seger were from Michigan.
I remember hearing "Hotel California" and "Turn the Page" through the
thin walls of the college dorm almost every night because the mooks next
door had to listen to this sewage while getting high. "Old Time Rock &
Roll" is played on both oldies and classic rock radio, so its potential
to grate is double. Never minded Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir" because I
laugh at its bombastic nature & length and it reminds me of the movie
"Fast Times at Ridgemount High" and ex-USC quarterback, Todd Marinovich
(it was/is his favorite song). I think they mistakenly refer to it in
"Fast Times" as being found on "Led Zeppelin IV." Styx never really
bothered me because they were so pretentious that they set themselves up
as their own silly joke. The Cavedogs played an intriguing cover of
"Renegade" in their set opening for Mojo Nixon and the Dead Milkmen on
the 1990 Enigma tour.

A couple of years later at college, I would have to put up hearing the
modern crock of Pearl Jam's "Alive" and "Mr Jones" by the Counting Crows
being played over & over though the cinder block by the next room's
inconsiderate thickheads. Finally, the all-time most annoying and
painful song might be a tie between "Your Mama Don't Dance" by Loggins &
Messina and "Broken "Wings" by Mister Mister.

Keep those Bruce Hornsby, Don Henley, and Phil Collins records faraway,

Ted L.

Hello......

That WCPAEB article appeared in an issue of Ptolemic Terrascope of few issues
back(which could be a few years for all I know).
"I Go Ape" was originally done by Neil Sedaka (late 50's/early 60's?)!
Queens first record is pretty good (very loud) and was definitely part of the GLAM
scene. There is an issue of Melody Maker from 73 or 74 that the cover shows
about 16 groups/artists re:GLAM including the likes of Queen,T Rex,Mott,Roxy,
Slade,Glitter,Sweet,etc.,etc.-great cover, actually.
In regards to radio irritants, I'm suprised nobody mentioned Morris Albert-
FEELINGS and it's 90's counterpart, BUTTERFLY KISSES by Bob Carlisle (these
have to count!).
Speaking of 70's/80's lamo bands trying to pick up the "glory' of their "heyday" by
reuniting and touring-LOVERBOY had to cancel a gig here last summer because no
one wanted to go! AND it was at a club that probably had 300 capacity...
And last but not least
I saw Pat Metheny jump onstage at an Ornette Coleman show in Montreal in the early 90's
and he totally wanked away making so much feedback and noise all he did was break strings!
Avant noise to the max-my sister walked out! Stigliano would have gone apeshit (speaking of Neil
Sedaka!)
BOC's first 3 records are great-I've got a tape of them playing at Shakeys Pizza 1970 and they do a
wild cover of Born To Be Wild.
Styx at least recorded a decent version of Lies.....

That's very true. I have several in my collection from WQAM (check out
the Roby Yonge aircheck if you get the chance) and WFUN in Miami, along
with one from WLOF in Orlando. They're all winners.

If you just heard it once, it would still take up a good chunk of your high
school years, but if I have to listen to a 10 minute song I'd rather heard
something with actual lyrics, melodies, harmonies and an arrangement than
two minutes of song padded out with a drum solo. (which was done by Arthur
Lee, who seems fairly well respected around here)

The exception to this is American Pie. A song about the history of rock and
roll that barely uses an electric guitar? I just don't understand.
