Yeah I love BOC too !!! The first 3 LP's are solid stuff, and they did some
great stuff on their later LP's, they just weren't I felt as solid and
consistent as they were on the first 3 LP's, tho' after Spectres they really
seem to lose it. I saw them a number of times in their early days, and my
fave show was on the " Tyranny and Mutation " tour, where they played the
Trinity College Field House. It was a hellish brick walled place with a dirt
floor but BOC were just killer that nite. Closest they ever came to sounding
like the live promo ep that Columbia sent out to radio stations titled "
Bootleg EP " .
In an interesting aside to BOC, and for the other Clearlight fans on the
list, I came across an article/ review in an old issue of Crawdaddy the other
day on Clearlight ( while digging for some artwork/pics on the Kinks )
written by Alan Lanier, done apparently before he joined BOC. Also in the
article / review is a bit where the editor ( Paul Williams )interjects that
reader's should check out the Soft White Underbelly's version of " Street
Singer " soon. Also Sandy Perlman and Richard Meltzer were both staff members
at Crawdaddy back then.
Hey Rhino Handmade, now that you're doing so much work with Elektra, how
'bout a 2 CD box set of the Soft White Underbelly and Stalk Forest Group LP's
??? maureen

Ahhh Bloodrock !!! I still like the first 2 LP's, don't listen to 'em every
day of the week but lotsa good fun when one is in the mood fer 70's heavy
rock . Particulary the first, except for that boring " Fantastic Piece of
Architecture " song, yeesh what a snooze fest . Whenever I'm out in the car
with my friends ( who'd rather listen to Celine Dion and club music ) I like
to shake 'em up every now and then by slipping on something like Raw Power,
the first Montrose LP, Introducing The Sonics or some other suitable chunk a
sound . Anyway this New Years Eve ( actually morning after ) we were driving
home, me as usual at the wheel, and after a nite of club tunes, divas, and
boy band music I couldnt take it anymore. So in an attempt to soothe my
already hungover, tired and crippled with intense headaches, friends, who
wanted to rest and hear more Celine Dion ( what could possibly be worse,
except maybe Alanis Morrisette ) , I popped in the CD of the first Bloodrock
LP, zipped it up to " Melvin Laid an Egg " and watched their heads explode
as the stereo panning of distorted Marshalls riffing full out on10, drums
thudding mercilously and Hammond organ shrieks came crushing outta the
speakers. It was beautiful ....
good times ... maureen

Laurent,I was talking to my long time friend Raymond(aka Astroboy)on the
phone(how retro)about all the space devoted to peoples' dislikes. I wonder
what it says about human nature that we seem to get more excited about stuff
we hate than stuff we love?!(Notice,I said "seem" before anyone FLAMES
me!!!)I know a certain amount of rant is healthy, like I'll bitch about my ex
awhile til I bore even myself, then it's time to get on to the groovy stuff
like...lotsa cool Easybeats stuff on ebay to make me drool even an
autographed copy of EASY(everybody but SNOWY signed it) and a copy of the
"Power Pop" issue of BOMP with an Easybeats piece and Vanda/Young
article...speaking of V/Y,on Retroactive's GONNA HAVE A GOOD TIME "In My
Book" and "Women(Make You Feel Alright)" are credited to Vanda/Young. I
thought those were Wright/Young tunes. Funny how that comp is all Vanda/Young
tunes, almost makes you wonder how much those two had to do with the issuing
of this. Vanda/Young tunes are great, but the Wright/Young tunes on the IT'S 2
EASY and VOLUME 3 are my absolute faves.
It's cool seeing all The Lyres'
stuff on the list. I heard Rick Coraccio's gonna sing The Brogues' "Don't

My record of the year if there is a need for one. And
also they're great live as I said a few months ago.
There is a cover of Eddie & the Hot Rods. Do you know
whose is the other cover in the album? I haven't
stopped playing this record since I got it. I wonder
why the jacket is so similar to the Registrators' "16

But I REALLY hate Queen.

hell yeah!! what a great movie. if i remember right, when rat (he was a
wussy - part wimp, and part pussy) was taking out jennifer jason leigh and
rockin out to kashmir, it was (where else) in a jacked-up late 70s firebird
with the logo on the hood. these cars were MADE to smoke pot and drive
through people's yards in.
there are so many classic scenes in that movie, i can't even remember
them all. first thing that comes to mind this morning is spicoli's
dope-inspired "wide world of sports" fantasy where he has those boxer shorts
and zinc oxide on and is surrounded by hot chicks ooohing and aahing all over
him. he says something like "now i'm gonna wing it on over to london and JAM
with the STONES!"
they really don't make em like that anymore...

JenRazz1@aol.com wrote:
<<Yup -- I totally agree. Neil Young just ain't crud. Not in my book,
anyway. For some reason, one of my favorite songs is Sedan Delivery.>>

I have to pipe in on this one. I'm a big Neil Young fan from way back.
In my teens and early 20s, I played tons of Neil Young songs on my acoustic
guitar. I picked up his style of playing - what I used to call "bang
and pick". My fingers used to bleed but I had a blast.

And the man can write some lyrics. I agree that Sedan Delivery is a
great tune. I could do without "My My, Hey Hey"
and much of the Harvest and After the Goldrush stuff I used to get into, but songs like
"Ambulance Blues" and "Tonight's the Night" are long-lasting faves. Re*ac*tor is
good too, and I even llike some of the Trans stuff. Even cheesy albums
like Everybody's Rockin' has some funny stuff, like "Payola Blues" (wasn't
there a video for this?) I think his last decent album was Freedom.
As for Harvest Moon, blech.

Speaking of Trans, I saw Neil on the Trans tour in Baltimore. The
first part of the show, he played solo acoustic guitar and harmonica
and did all the Harvestclassics. The crowd ate it up. The second half, he came out
doing his electronic Trans material. Bad Neil. I thought he was
hilarious, but I must have been the only one, because people were
*pissed*. People started throwing those fold-up metal chairs at the stage. They
had to stop the show!

i have always liked the acoustic version of "transformer man" on the
unplugged record - not only was that a clever middle-finger at everybody
(like me) who always dissed his trans stuff, it also showed that underneath
all of the electronics, it was a great song.

The Highland Clan has a song called Koda to Cub ready to go. Maybe if we
can get a gig with Big Meat Hammer (hint hint), we could play it along
with "No Sleep Til Geno's".

BTW, I have a fondness for Wesley Willis, especially his songs
"Outburst", "Rock and Roll Mconald's" and "The Chicken Cow".

Well then, go ahead and discuss these bands you mentioned! I'd love
to hear more about Firestarter in particular. Pardon my ignorance,
but I don't know much about 'em at all. Do tell!

BTW, I *don't* think it's sad at all. Let the people say what they will...

"It's Over" by the Scavengers is also on the comp and is currently in
the Lyres set list.

Never Be Free - Dale & The Devonaires
(ALSO on that comp)

Alex,

I propose that we do a Lyres' tribute show a la "Songs The Lyres Taught
Us". We could fill up three hours easily, limit the hard hitting topics,
and give the people on the BOMP list what they want!

Just heard something on NewsRadio 88 here in the NYC metro area about a
poll taken in Great Britain dealing with songs people could do without ever
hearing again. It seems 100,000 people were polled about the very subject
we've been discussing lately. Their choices included tracks by Elton John,
Celine Dion, and The Spice Girls. So, I wonder, what will be the result of
this poll's findings?

The result ran on TV over here last night. The top 5 most hated were:
        1 Spice Girls - Wannabe
2 Celine Dion - my heart will go on
3 Elton John -candle in the wind
4 Chris de Burgh - lady in red
5 Britney Spears - baby one more time
Which is a pretty scary list. The poll ran alongside one to find the 100
'greatest' number 1s of all time. Only UK no 1s qualified (which excluded
quite a lot - the Who, the Sex Pistols), and voting was only from a
shortlist determined by some commitee, and I believe the shortlist was only
of something like 106 singles. So Imagine by John Lennon is now 'officially'
the greatest ever single. You Really Got Me was 18, and the Clash were 41,
but with Should I Stay or Should I Go, which was their only UK no 1 thanks
to a Levis commercial a few years back.
(I reckon Norton should release Great Big Kiss from Hard Night's Day by the
Dolls as a single over here - It's been used in a chewing gum commercial for
some time now).

Her first three albums were actually pretty good. Neil Geraldo is a
great guitar player. Too bad her later albumd feature him less. She
actually covered "No You Don't, a Chinn/Chapman song that was previously
covered by the Sweet (and Kenne Highland Clan w/Gumdrops on Runt of the
Litter Volume 5 - Go buy one when it comes out so I can send someones
kid to camp).

I think there was more Chinn/Chapman stuff as well.

You Better Run was a 60's garage type song (The Rascals, I think).

Get Nervous wasn't too bad, but classic rock started taking a bad
freefall (at least for me)m after the summer of 1981 when synthesizers
started getting used very badly. At least early disco, people played
their own instruments.

something different....I admire ANYTHING on radio that's "different"
nowadays.......but most BOMPers (including me) would run from the room if
forced to listen to a lot of the music he plays. An awful lot of
Whine-And-Cheese.

A lot of people confuse Pete and Vin, their voices are slightly similar in a
very "non-radio" kind of way.

Me, I was the first (and last) guy to play "Woe-Is-Uh-Me-Bop" on WFUV. I
think they're STILL washing the trasmitter down 27 years later.

I love Welsey Willis, too!

My favorite Wesley Willis song is "Cut The Mullet" with the lines:

"Get that rat's nest off your head
Get that crazy-ass mullet off your skull
Take your ass to the barbershop
Tell the barber you're sick of looking like an asshole
Cut the mullet! Cut the mullet!"

Wesley Willis kicks a brown bear's ass!

Glad to know even the Lady Di loving Brits can't stomach #3 anymore... I'm
sure the results will be dutifully ignored by the programming giant's in
Marketing Research...
It's funny, of the five, their choice for the WORST is easily the BEST song
of the 5, IMHO--at least it's got a bubblegummy sensibility...

The exclusion of the Sex Pistols is a spurious one indeed, considering they
HAD the best selling single in the UK during the Queen's Silver Jubilee week
with "God Save the Queen"... which was dutifully omitted from their
listings, which only went as high as #2... Nothing like rewriting history
to suit your needs...
