How ARE those Love, Peace & Poetry cds? All psyche? Heavy psyche, lite psyche? I've seen those but haven't picked them up yet. The same with the Mood Mosiacs LPs (which I think I've only seen on LP). One has a great cover of a row of nude women just laying down & hanging out. They all have gorgeous covers, but I have no idea as to what is INSIDE the covers!

Speaking of nude women (okay this is way off-topic, but a few people may be interested), there is a website www.nakednews.com, this is not a porn site but is just real newstories being broadcast by naked women. Just thought some of you might want to know this. . .

Back to the music, I *think* Exitos a Go Go is one of the CDs a friend of mine is sending up to me this week. I'll know when I get the package!

I have all of the Teenage Shutdowns but I still need to get the Fuzz Flaykes and Shakes!!!!!

three at once, I could have gotten a Teenage Shutdown and a Fuzz Flaykes and
Shakes volume that I don't have yet instead (I'm not just brown-nosing list

Okay. Let's twist this now. We've all had a lot of fun talking about the
Classic Rock Music we hate. And a few of us have then leapt in to defend
artists like Queen, Neil Young, etc.

So here's what I propose. Pick a "Classic Rock Artiste" that you despise.
And then tell us about the ONE (or two) tune(s) by that artist that you "uh,
actually kinda like, sort of."

Shouldn't be too hard. As I said earlier, if Queen's "Now I'm Here" or
"Stone Cold Crazy" doesn't move you, you may just not be listening PAST all
the "Queen Baggage."

And, of course--as someone said earlier--Syd's Pink Floyd doesn't count!!
But the 70s Floyd does. In spades. Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac doesn't
count either. But.....well, you get the idea.

I'll start this off, (and risk a SERIOUS flaming) by naming a band who I hate
beyond measure, beyond words, beyond expression. Easy target, too--Eagles.
There's a completely forgotten song on their first LP--"Chug All
Night"--which is an absolute KILLER. It's Glen Frey, of course. Henley
involvement is limited to drums and BG vocals.

Also, on their SECOND album, the even-worse "Desperado", there's
another--even MORE blistering--Frey rocker called "Out Of Control." If
you've never heard it, you simply won't believe they could come up with a
song like this one. Which is why you HAVEN'T heard it..........

No, it was Vin Scelsa, as soon as I read your post I recognized his name

I just saw Christof at the record fair about two hours ago, he is living in

he's not on this list) to him as he will probably be going to Hipsters next

Funny you should say this. This is exactly why I didn't pursue commercial
radio DJing as a career. I couldn't stand going on mic and pretending like I
was excited about playing Styx or Journey shite. Of course I discovered this
AFTER I spent four years of my life acquiring a B.S. in Broadcasting and
another year at a "professional broadcasting school," Broadcast Center, in
St. Louis.

To be honest, I never really liked Joe & Eddie---just another bland
hootenanny thing, along the lines of the Kingston Trio. I really do prefer
the Pair Extraordinare as far as that goes. You might as well get your feet
wet with that best-of, although (at least where I live) their GNP albums are
fairly common. (There was also an album on Sunset, a budget label, called
DOWN TO EARTH, which is yet another compilation of GNP tracks.) Even though
they were a folk duo, their albums sometimes get filed under "soul," mainly
because their covers show them looking like Sam & Dave, only not quite as
rugged.

<>

If you can get your hands on old rock magazines (public library?), there is
an old ish of Goldmine (dated 2/5/93, cover story on the Clash) that has an
in-depth article on J&E---it's a bit gushy, but otherwise it's well-written
and highly informative. Or you can e-mail me offline and I can Xerox it for
you (send me your address).

I do have one Joe & Eddie recommendation---"Swing Down Chariot," a 1964
single that also appeared on their album JOE & EDDIE, VOL. 4. This 200 MPH,
breakneck treatment of an old public-domain spiritual absolutely RIPS!
Again, it's not "soul" (as many expect this duo to sound) but if you can
imagine two Paul Robesons snapping their fingers to a near-jazz
accompaniment, you've got the idea. And a great li'l number to enjoy.

If that's true, that sure hasn't stopped them from
updating the damned thing. One time I had an oldies
station on and while the original stopped at Bobby
Darin and "Mack The Knife," this one added on Roy
Orbison, Stevie Ray Vaughn and a bunch of others who
had passed on since the original 1974 hit. Talk about
prolonging a migraine.

I don't see Queen as similar to either Sweet, or T. Rex, both of which I
adore. Well, not "Love Is Like Oxygen" period Sweet, but up to the "Give
Us A Wink" album I like a lot, and even that album is kinda patchy.>>

This was my entire post: Not that the bands are similar, but

you get the sweet with the wicked. I started off the post with "not that the
bands are similar..." You forgot to read that part.

Foiled again! They are good tracks, but the exception rather than the

Subject: Today's Music Purchase

I need to thank Brian and Rob for recommending the Greenwood Karma
Records store. Not only did they have a bunch of CD's I wanted but also
a vinyl section that proved to be fruitful as well. Hell, I spent damn
near $200 bucks today. As someone said earlier in the week, it's a good
thing I'm single.

Generally speaking, Karma isn't known for its music selection. They are
primarily a local Ticketmaster outlet and retailer of local classic rock
station Q95 merchandise. But this store in Greenwood is definitely
different. In fact, it may be the finest record store in Indy.

I hadn't been in this store since my college days, over a decade ago.
Still, one of the guys behind the counter looked like the same guy who
worked there when I used to go in, sans the long hair.

Anyway, amazingly, about three minutes after I walked in, they started
playing the latest Insomniacs disc over the sound system!

I purchased on vinyl: Tee & Thee Crumpets (even though I already had the
CD!), The Woggles' latest, The Embrooks' Separations, a compilation from
The Dogs, the latest Norton Rivieras release and Vol. 3 of Fuzz, Flaykes
and Shakes, among others. I found on CD: the Standells Cavestomp disc,
a Rich Kids comp., The Arf Arf Yeah Yeah Yeah disc and a Teenage
Shutdown that I still needed. They had 45's and videos too but I'd
already done enough damage. I shall return though...

of Australia, promoting her "Yodelling the Classics"
album.

Lenny>

You know something Lenny, I'd never heard of her until
someone mentioned her on list awhile ago. Funny thing
is, on the rare occasion one of our countrymen/women
become famous overseas, the media over here jump on
the story like you wouldn't believe. Unless I've been
totally ignorant at what's been happening over here
popular culture-wise (a distinct possibility) I'd say
this world-famous yodeller is being somewhat ignored
in her homeland. Sounds like a bit of a shame
really.....

As for the whole 'Classic Rock' radio thing. We get
the usual suspects here (Led Zep, Deep Purple etc) but
the ones that drive me most nuts were our very own
homemade variety (referred to as 'Oz Rock' over here).
Most of you non-Australian Bompers wouldn't be
familiar with the likes of Cold Chisel, Australian
Crawl, Daddy Cool (hey Gary!), Skyhooks (hey Mike!),
Men At Work (who you'd all know), among many others.
The Easybeats, AC-DC, & Rose Tattoo are among the few
cool bands that you're likely to hear on our so-called
'Classic Rock' stations though. A couple of years
back, the tape player in my car broke & I was forced
to listen to the radio. Only having a small number of
stations to choose from, I found myself in frustration
flicking between our 'classic rock' one & our
so-called 'alternative' one. Despite the unbelievable
amount of shit they played on both, I gotta say I
preferred to hear the likes of the Easybeats over the
fucking Smashing Pumpkins so guess which station
(begrudgingly I must add) got most of my listening
attention? Thank Christ I bit the bullet & bought a
new tape player for the car shortly after. There was
only so much Sydney radio I could put up with. If guns
were legal down here I saw myself doing a Harvey
Keitel in 'Bad Lieutenant' to that shitty car radio
while sitting in peak hour traffic on the way to work
& hearing 'Stairway To Heaven' or 'Flame Trees' (look
it up kids!) for the millionth fuckin' time.....

Karl.

Hey MJ, sounds like an Australian punk/ska outfit from
(I think) a town called Newcastle just north of
Sydney. Can't say I'm familiar with them except for
hearing that they released a ska version of a Radio
Birdman tune a few years back. The whole idea of a ska
'New Race' or whatever song they picked to do was kind
of unsettling in my mind so I failed to find out any
more. I think they are kinda popular over here, or at
least were.

I'd never heard of it before. Just assumed that if it sucked it must have
been from the '70s. So what is it - '68, '69? Same thing.

I love this song! I'd never call it tedious, but half
it's charm lies in the fact it is so bloated &
overlong. Hell, I'll take 'Macarthur Park' over
'Bohemian Rhapsody' anyday! I've got a copy of Richard
Harris' 'Love Songs' album, & it's filled with these
sensational heart-wrenching odes to love by the Duck

it left out in the rain? Aaaah, the genius of Jimmy

I've done that more than enough times at that place,
believe me. I know how easy that is.

AMEN To that!

One of the reasons that particular Karma is so
different is that years ago Gary bought the store and
kept the name. So, technically, it is part of the
chain, but it's not, if that makes any sense.

That's probably Gary. He's run that store as long as
I can remember and I've been going there nearly 20
years. A lot of the same people have worked there a
long time, too.

They're big fans of that disc over there and it isn't
hard to see why. Sometimes they have to do mixes of
some of the current releases, but they always manage
to throw on one cool thing or two.

They had 45's and videos too but I'd already done
enough damage. I shall return though...

Maybe you'll see me there one of these days, as I'm
there quite frequently. Most of them know me by name
because I'm always bugging them as to when they're
gonna do another Get Hip order! (Hey, it does work!)
