Hey all!

It's me again! Three weeks off and still a bit tired... First day at work
and I had already read the digests up till last Friday... Fuckin' hell!!
About a dozen new ones this morning!! How the hell am I supposed to keep
up?

Anyway, more historical dates now, starting with yesterday. Enjoy!

On January 7, in

1930, Lonnie Johnson recorded "She's making whoopee in hell tonight", in
New York
1954, Muddy Waters recorded "I'm your hoochie coochie man" and "She's so
pretty" at Chicago's Chess Studios;
1964, the Beatles were at London's Playhouse Theatre, to record a radio
session for Saturday Club, to be broadcast on February 15. They taped seven
songs: "All my loving", "Money (that's what I want)", "The hippy hippy
shake", "I want to hold your hand", "Roll over Beethoven", "I wanna be your
man" and "Johnny B Goode". Johnny made it onto "Live at the BBC";
1964, Dion Dimucci recorded "The road I'm on (Gloria)" at New York's
Columbia Studios;
1969, Deep Purple (Mk1) recorded "Emmaretta" at London's De Lane Lea
Studios. It was released as a non-lp 45;
1980, Magazine played a BBC Peel session.

On January 8, in

1951, B.B. King recorded "B.B. blues" at Memphis' Sun Studios;
1954, Coy 'Hot Shot' Love recorded "Harmonica jam" and "Wolf call boogie",
also at Sun Studios in Memphis;
1965, Barbara Lewis recorded "Baby I'm yours", in New York;
1966, the Zombies recorded a BBC session. "Sitting in the park" made it
into "Zombie heaven";
1969, Aretha Franklin recorded "It ain't fair" and "The weight" at New
York's Atlantic Studios;
1973, the Sharks recorded "Ol' jelly roll" at London's Island Studios. The
Sharks was Andy Fraser's band, put together after he left the Free in 1972.
Chris Spedding was the guitarist in this short-lived band. Did you know
Chris was also once a Womble, together with Mike Batt?;
1982, the Jam recorded "Carnation" at London's Air Studios;
1990, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds recorded acoustic versions of "Deanna" and
"City of refuge" at New York's Fun City Studios.

Yeah, really: Nick Cave at FUN City Studios!

That's it! Lunch break over!

L8er,
Jan (listening to early 80's Top 40, self-burned for a colleague, keeping
the original 45's for himself!!!)

I believe there're actually two versions of the Stalk Forest

- -A vinyl one, which i don't own, but i've seen it. it looked
pretty 'official' (for a bootleg), and was a bit expensive.
- -One i own: a cd (cd-r) which also contains their single.
(don't know if it's on the vinyl version as well)

>I was thinking about doing this "Songs We Taught the Lyres" thing as a
future episode of The Wayback Machine, too! This helps tremendously. So, it
looks like there are still a few left blank (unless I've missed something):

Give Your Love To Me -
Feeling No Pain -
Skinny Minnie - Bill Haley? Louis Prima?
What's A Girl Like You Doing In A Place Like This -

"Feeling No Pain" was a single on Columbia by the Del-Satins, released in
'63 or so. They backed Dion on some of his solo recordings after he split
from the Belmonts.
"Give Your Love To Me" is an unreleased tune by a garage combothat Jeff got
from a guy who used to be in the band. I can't recall the name right now -
the group was from Atlanta though. When the Lyres first began playing this
cut my pal Eddie and I asked Jeff about the tune and he told us the scant
details.

"What's A Girl Like You Doing In A Place Like This" is actually "A Girl Like
You" - it's found on the "B" side of the late 1964 single by Them on the
King label, who later became (well, on record anyway) "It's Them", famous
for the Lyres covering their "Baby I Still Want Your Loving" (one of the
best Lyres covers...

And no one mentioned the Lyres cover of Pete Best's "The Way I Feel About
You", a staple of shows circa 85-86 when I saw 'em monthly...

Hey, even though I've been permanently barred from attending a Lyres gig by
da man hisself, that doesn't mean I gave up on the music...
So, whadda youse guys and gals nominate as their fave Lyres cover?

According to a couple of press releases I saw they're doing several dates in
NYC later this week. Here's some cut 'n' pastes from the two releases:

On Thursday January 11, 2001, British punk rock pioneers Alternative TV are
playing their first New York City gig in their 24-year history. Guided by the
infamous and influential "Sniffin' Glue" fanzine editor Mark Perry (guitar and
vocals), ATV's current lineup also includes founding member Tyrone Thomas
(guitar); Buzzcocks' Tony Barber (bass); and newcomer John Just (drums). The
band -- whose recent UK appearances at the 'Holidays in the Sun' and '100
Club' punk festivals have drawn rave reviews -- are set to perform much of
their classic 1977-era material as part of their debut set.

Yeah I guess so. Let's talkabout something fun. Does any one out there know
much of the Surfteens? I found an album by them on Sutton(I think that's the
label, I'll have to check and see) in a 25c box and it's GREAT!!!

i absolutely agree about loverboy and reo speedwagon (who, by the way, just
had a street named after them in their hometown of champaigne illinois!).

still, i'd have to say the absolute worst of all was steve miller band --
i'd like to take the money and run my foot right up his ass!

but i gotta disagree on the queen bashing. i still listen to their stuff
(Blair, i even still dig some of hot space believe it or not). freddie
mercury never seemed to take himself too seriously, and always seemed to
really be having a lot of fun. plus he and brian may were really meant to
make music together. (i read a great piece on freddie mercury ages ago that
rightly pointed out that it takes a talented guy to outshine david bowie
when singing alongside him.) and for all the crap i got in high school for
loving them and hating van halen, they might as well have been the sex
pistols.

despite them being my favorite band for probably 5 years, i pretty much
forgot about them until i heard the fastbacks do a great version of one of
their tunes (brighton rock maybe?).

Hey everyone (or at least those in the NYC vicinity),

Some of you know that I'm playing drums in an AC/DC cover band... just wanted
to let you know that we've got a show coming up on Thursday the 18th, 10pm at
the Continental in NYC. The Dirt Cheap also features Sam Elwitt (Sea Monkeys,
Nutley Brass, Silly Pillows, etc.) as Angus and Kris Parrish (Rotgutter, Big
Baby & the Strollers, numerous Dave the Spazz Xmas bands, etc.) as Malcolm.
Our Bon Scott (and occasional Brian Johnson) is Tamara Bowman, and Doug (Eat
Doug) Botero rounds out the band in the Cliff Williams role.

The details again: The Dirt Cheap // Thursday, Jan. 18 //
Continental, Third Ave at St. Marks // 10pm

Hope to see you there!

Your friend,

    Perhaps the modifiers help things. That only leaves London and the
United States of America. Maybe we can eliminate the latter from
consideration 'cuz they have a few words, rather than just one? Then only
London is a problem.

    I was under the impression that DMZ was military terminology for
"De-Militarized Zone". So, while a code phrase, it's also a place. To hear
it in use as such, watch "Good Morning, Vietnam" as Robin Williams says that
they're rockin' "from The Delta to the DMZ."

Yes I remember this well. It's worth remembering that for a while in 76-77,
the Great British Establishment was actually genuinely shocked and peturbed
by this new-fangled scary punk rock thing. The Pistols single was indeed
kept away from the number one spot in the Top 20 (I forget what was actually
the official replacement #1 but it was something fairly drecky) so as not to
offend delicate royal/national sensibilities during Betty's Silver Jubilee
week (mid-77).
In fact ISTR it was quite unusual to hear any Pistols material at all on the
radio for quite some time too. And, when the "Bollocks" album was riding
high, even the title of the album could not be mentioned on radio because it
contained a VERY RUDE WORD - Crapital Radio and Radio 1 for example had to
either bleep it out or replace it with something else (the word "precisely"
from the speaking clock was a popular choice).

And as for the Pistols on Bill Grundy (late 76) well we've talked about this
before but let's remember that it was all the fault of QUEEN, who were
booked to appear dropped out at the last minute. THose jokers at EMI just
sent along the Pistols as a substitute band.

She keeps the Moet Et Chandon
In a pretty cabinet... la la laaaa

Nope, back the 80's when Mr. T was one of (if not the
most) recognizable celebrities in popular culture, he
recorded and album called "Mr. T's Commandments"

"Mr. T COMMANDMENTS
Following close on the heels of such influential
recording artists as David Hasselhoff and William
Shatner, Mr. T stepped up to the microphone and
bellowed out a seven song children's album to
complement his 1984 book and video: Be Somebody, or Be
Somebody's Fool.

The album was everything you'd expect (and more),
containing such memorable hits as: "Treat Your Momma
Right," "The Toughest Man in the World," "No Dope, No
Drugs," and the uplifting "Mr. T, Mr. T (He was made
for love)".

This was a staple of my college radio show. You see
the album cover at:

http://sucka.users2.50megs.com/stuff.html

Scroll down a bit. It's worth it.

Ah-hah! You're missing the obvious here! Note that
most of the sucky Geographic Reference Bands are
singular, whereas the good GRB's are plural.

A general rule is that a good band will:

A) Start it's name with "The"
B) End it's name in "S"
C) Or Both  A & B
D) Or end with a number

I know what you're thing "What about Love? What about
Big Star? What about..." It's a general rule. There
are exceptions, but for the most part, the "The-S
Rule" works. For any good band that's singular, you
can name 50 that conform to the rule.

If you still don't believe me, remember 80's
hair/metal bands like: Kix, Ratt, Winger, Mr.
Mister...

You forgot Alabama. And let's also not forget the worst of them all: MISSOURI. Ok, maybe Boston WAS worse...

You could also throw in Nashville Pussy, as far as I'm concerned. Knoxville Girls, on the other hand, are fairly decent.
