Written by Gene Clark, 'Boston' was recorded by the Byrds in the pre-'Mr
Tambourine Man' days and eventually released on the 'Preflyte' album. So
it's originally a Byrds tune.

Hey,
Does anyone out there have any clue about the quality of Gremlin amps? I saw
one today in a pawn shop for 20 bucks and it looked pretty cool (I didn't
have time to try it out). It was a solid state thing, which I am generally
opposed to, but it had reverb AND tremolo!! Any help would be
appreciated....

The whole concert contains Tommy in its entirety. The reissue only includes
two of the Tommy songs. Additonally, several of the reissue songs are edited
("Shakin All Over," "Magic Bus," "My Generation), though not as edited as
they were for the original LP. For the reissue, they also muted the mics
that weren't in use at any given time, resulting in various levels of
ambience coming and going in a most distracting manner.

In an astounding display of needless monkeying, the first two vocal lines of
"Heaven and Hell" were rerecorded by John Entwistle in 1995 for the reissue!
They say he was inaudible on the original master, but I can hear him well
enough on the boot.

The entire boot is available easily on Napster. Here's a link to an
exhaustive article comparing the two:

A general rule is that a good band will:

A) Start it's name with "The"

C) Or Both A & B
D) Or end with a number

I know what you're thing "What about Love? What about

are exceptions, but for the most part, the "The-S

can name 50 that conform to the rule.

If you still don't believe me, remember 80's
hair/metal bands like: Kix, Ratt, Winger, Mr.

I always thought it would be funny if plural bands had to become singular
and vice versa...

for instance, the Lyres become Lyre, the Fastbacks become Fastback, Mudhoney
becomes the Mudhonies, Big Star becomes the Big Stars, etc. etc. try it,
it's fun!

'cause it it totally fuzzed out!!! It's probably worth $20 bucks if you're
not looking for great sound...but then again, I use shitty
equipment(Silvertone and Vox guitars through Harmony and Silvertone
amps...). I actually sold the Gremlin amp for something like $80 to some guy
who said they were his favorite amps...go figure?!?

>>CSNY "Suite Judy Blue Eyes" da-da-da-da-da, da-da, da-da-da-daaah>>

No, it's "doo-doo-doo-doo-doot/DOOT DOO doo-doo doo-doot"!!
Yeah, that one's annoying, but I have to admit I liked the Deja Vu album a
lot when I was growing up, hippy dippy as it was. Especially the Hammond?
wandery organ and exquisite harmony singing (I'm a sucker for any kind of
organ and harmony singing) on "Carry On" and also LOVED "Helpless", and
"Almost Cut my Hair". I wuz a hippie chile! (Actually my dad didn't have
many rock albums so the few he did have I tended to like no matter what).

I have so many bad music memories. The stuff we endured on 70's and 80's
radio must be so bad compared to even the worst of 60's radio. Journey
stands out as one I hated and I'll never forgive myself for allowing my
friend to drag me to one of their concerts when we were in high school. Not
only was it terrible but we were almost crushed!! "Lovin', Touchin',
Squeezin'.. (YOUR THROAT SHUT!!)" "When the lights/go down/on the
cit-TAY../and the sun shines on/the BAy-EE-AY-AY.."
And how could I forget that REO dude braying "PIECES of EIGHT/A SLICE(?)
OF THE MONEY TREE" or whatever... Styx, Foreigner, Phil Collin's era
Genesis, Phil Collins' "In the Air Tonight", John Cougar's "Jack & Diane",
JAMES TAYLOR, Hall & Oates... all clogging the airwaves. Rod Stewart really
stuck in my craw: "Maggie May" ("the morning sun when it's in your face
really shows your age") and the sappy, ickily erotic,
more-than-you-wanted-to-know Hallmark Card to an underage girl: "Tonight's
the Night"
Though I never cared much for Led Zeppelin they are Mozart compared to
this shlock.
No one has mentioned Pink Floyd's THE WALL. This was HUGE at the time and
everyone had to get stoned and see the Midnight movie. Looking back I'm
surprised something so incredibly morbid and downbeat would become so
popular with the masses. I got sucked in, I have to admit!

definitely familiar with the other three, especially
Daddy Cool. I once had a Daddy Cool 45 on Reprise
("Hi Honey Ho") which I found at a Salvation Army in
Nashville, Tennessee when I was a kid. I thought it
was pretty decent boogie rock with horns. I was
always curious if anything else this band did was any
good. Any enlightenment would be appreciated.>

Brian,
You don't wanna know who Australian Crawl are (trust
me on that one) & as far as Daddy Cool goes I'm gonna
let that one go through to the keeper (Australian
cricket lingo that one) 'cos my opinion on them has
been somewhat sullied through over-exposure to them.
Gary Apollo you want to pick up the ball on this one?
See aside from the constant radio play they get, my
local (RIP) Rugby League team (that's Australian for
football) were the Sea Eagles whose theme song was
'Eagle Rock' done by none other than Daddy Cool.
Hearing that song was kind of like hearing that 'Na Na
Na Na, Hey Hey Hey, Goodbye' (I have no idea what it's
called but I'm sure you know the one I'm talking
about) one you guys have to sit through at your
sporting fixtures. Over on the ApolloJams list, Gary
described them something along the lines of better
than Canned Heat maybe? Apologies if I got that wrong
but I ain't into that boogie thing done by a bunch of
wacky hippie types so despite my long-winded response
here, I have no opinion. Buy a Rose Tattoo record
instead.
Karl.

The bandmembers include former singer of another Zep tribute band - Physical
Grafitti, as well as former members of Zebra, Ratt Race Choir, and Ace
Frehley's band.

I haven't even seen them myself yet, but I'll likely make the show on the 12,
as it's up in the boonies near me.

Not a big Zep fan myself, but I know these guys; and they're all damn good;
should be a fun nite.

Anybody seen the flick "The Phynx" ('69 or '70)? Is there anything
worthwhile in it music-wise to recommend it to Bompers? I know it's about a
'pre-fab' band, but is it an obviously fake band, or a real band thrown into
a forgettable film? How's the music?

Any info, pans, or picks will be appreciated.

Thanks!

Mike, I haven't seen it, but here's some info from the independant (or is
that international?) movie database:

For pretty complete credits, go here.
http://us.imdb.com/Title?0066221

I'd heard about the film before, but less from spectacular raves than for
mention of Col. Sanders appearance, LOL. Notice also Ultra Violet listed in
the credits... The most telling info was in the fan review at the bottom of
the page, which I'll paste in here:

<<Hoo boy -- the only thing worse than a bad comedy is a bad comedy from the
Vietnam era, especially one that was clearly made by old people who
distrusted and feared the youth movement.

So on the shelf with "Skidoo" and "Smashing Time," try and stock a copy of
"The Phynx," a ridiculous spy spoof featuring some very forgettable
Leiber/Stoller songs (the band-in-the-movie's big hit is "What Is Your
Sign?") and a whole lot of over-the-hill Hollywood notables (and Colonel
Sanders!).

This movie is pretty hard to find, and it's probably just as well -- the
only thing interesting about it is how obscure it is.>>

Hey! Wait a minute, didn't I hear The Lyres cover Barry And The Remains'
"Don't Look Back"?!(circa 1983/84 Peppermint Lounge,NYC,maybe the same night
Wendy Wyld of The Mad Violets was waving a pair of scissors in the direction
of Jeff's" shaggy,long hair"(well,that's a Magic Plants wave there) Or am I
dreaming? My long time fave was always their version of NC6's "I Confess".
Though I was told this is blasphemy,I PREFER The Lyres version cos it's more
soulful. That one really tears me up!!! But my new fave is their exquisite
rendition of The Stoics' "Enough Of What I Need". Yeow!! That one blew me
away!!! That has been walking around in my head for months!!!

That song went up a bit in my eyes after I heard the Let it Be album and
found out where he got the name from.

Hmm, was just listening to the Stoics original on an "Acid Visions" CD!
With all due respect to the amazing Lyres, I think it would be mighty hard
to top the Mystic Eyes version of this great snot-drenched tune.

And speaking of that AV comp, I totaly dig Neal Ford and the Fanatics
frenzied fuzzed-out cover of the Zombies' "Woman". And the Brood did a
nice gender bend with that one as well.

Squirrely.

Subject: Re: Pete Salant

I am constantly amazed at how many touchstones (good and bad) I keep having
with people on this list whom I've never even met.

While talking about this whole Classic-Rock-Radio swamp-stink, I just
happened to mention having known Peter Salant in high school.......he being
one of the foremost architects of that which we now know and hate........and
then here comes MopTop Mike:

<< THAT is hilarious about Pete Salant! What band did you guys play in?>>

Uhh....well, it was called "Stoanfield." This would be 1971. Pete played a
Yamaha copy of a Vox organ, if you remember those. We had a three-piece
brass section, one of whom was Bob Smith, who's now a very highly-respected
Jazz Guy...mainly in Japan. He made a big splash with an album called "Bob's
Diner."

And YES, we did play some garage music. With some VERY wacky horn charts by
me and Bob.

<< I remember him as Pete Stone on WAVZ in the 70's, and later on WKCI before
he left to go into radio programming. Whatta jerk! That guy had/(has?) the
biggest EGO..bigger than any rock star you could mention. How do I know him?
Here in CT, I was working in production and as a weekend DJ on an AM radio
station in '86. Our PD informed me that the low-watt AM station in town was
changing format to "all-oldies", and that it would be programmed "in-house",
meaning no consultant bullshit to tell you what could and could not be
played. So, I sent three different airchecks of my show plus my own 60's Real
Don Steele/93 KHJ 60's styled show on my college station. Salant was the PD
and operations manager of the new station, and he would not respond to my
requests of employment. Not one to be ignored, I invited myself in to the
station, and demanded to see him. He looked at me, and said of the "Real Don
Steele" aircheck that "people don't wanna hear a fast talking
entertaining DJ anymore".........A few curse words exchanged, and I left.
When the arbitron ratings for the next "book" came out, Salant's AM oldies
station was 13 out of 13 radio stations in the listening area. Our station
was 3rd. I sent Salant a card, congratulating him on his brilliant
programming that attracted the audience he claimed was clamoring for
something "different" in oldies. Anyway, his station tanked in less than two
years, and he split. Now, he's based in Virginia consulting for "oldies"
stations. He was on the air up here a year ago for a DJ reunion show, and
all he did was talk about how important he was, and his new business.>>

Gulp. Well, Mike, I did my best with him, sorry! In point of fact he had a
truly encyclopedic knowledge of music, radio AND the piano.......(he could,
no shit, sit down at the keyboard, you could call out a song to him, and he
would play it flawlessly.....with his left hand playing in a different key
than the right. Scared the shit out of me. Name the interval.....half-step,
minor-third, whatever. )

He also was an extremely funny guy, ON all the time........then he left for
college. And the next time we all saw him, about three years later, he was so
serious and so DIFFERENT it was like talking to a brick. I guess, from what
you say, he just continued on that same spiral.

Well, I don't THINK any of this is MY fault!! But ya never know, do ya......

I've heard of this film for many years myself, and I'm
reminded of the review it received in "Leonard
Maltin's Movie and Video Guide" (formerly "TV
Movies"). It is not reviewed favorably at all. It
gets a BOMB rating and is called a "way off base
satire." Even so, it's still a curio to me that I
wouldn't mind seeing one of these days.

Video Search of Miami or a place like that that deals
in obscure videos might be the ones to point you to a
copy.

The infamous "Na Na, Hey Hey, Kiss Him Goodbye" by
Steam. The original record was bad enough, but the
Nylons did a cover of it in 1987 that was far worse.
It was a hit, too.

Subject: Radio Rumpus Room 1/5/01 playlist

Well, we didn't call it a "Best of 2000" show because we didn't hear
anywhere near enough to say definitively -- and who are we to judge,
anyway?!?!? What we DID do on this show was focus exclusively on some of
the great stuff released during the year that Jean and I found ourselves
coming back to again and again.

As always we say "thanks" to the artists and labels responsible for
producing tonight's music, and to the loyal listeners who encourage us to
air it every week! (For six years now, Radio Rumpus Room has been broadcast
Fridays at 9-10:30 p.m. on KFAI Fresh Air Radio, FM 90.3 Minneapolis and
106.7 St. Paul. The show streams live in RealAudio, and as always, our most
recent shows are archived in their entirety in RealAudio -- check out the
RRR web page to see what we've been up to!)

Here's the Radio Rumpus Room playlist for Friday, January 5, 2001:

SAVVY SHOW STARTER (ALWAYS LOCALLY RECORDED!)
Suicide Commandos -- Complicated Fun (Commandos Commit Suicide Dance
Concert; Garage D'Or)

Long out of print, the CD reissue of this milestone Minneapolis event was
one of the most satisfying surprises of 2000. Founded with the idea of
making the most amount of noise -- and fun -- possible with the least
number of people, the three-strong Commandos jumpstarted the whole mid- to
late-'70s Minneapolis scene. This non-stop CD, culling 32 songs from the 50
they played at Jay's Longhorn on their last night on Earth -- November 24,
1978 -- accurately pegs what the Commandos were all about: Big, dumb noisy
fun.

Junior Varsity -- Bam B-B-Bam Bam Bam (Bam Bam Bam!; Peek-A-Boo)
Swingin' Neckbreakers -- Let's Have a Jam (Return of Rock; Telstar)
Freddy Fortune & the Four-Gone Conclusions -- Dracula's Deuce (Monster
Party 2000; MuSick)
Go-Nuts -- More Mayo (Dunk and Cover!; Lookout!)

Small Faces -- Sha La La La Lee (BBC Sessions; Fuel 2000)
Ides of March -- Roller Coaster (Ideology; Sundazed)
Los Shakers -- Give Me (Por Favor; Big Beat)
Gants -- My Baby Don't Care (Road Runner: The Best of the Gants; Sundazed)

Johnny Cash -- Solitary Man (American III: Solitary Man; American)
Handsome Family -- Up Falling Rock Hill (In the Air; Carrot Top)
Sally Timms & Jon Langford -- Watching the Horizon (Songs of False Hope and
High Values; Bloodshot)
Deke Dickerson and the Ecco-Fonics (with the Calvanes) -- Wang Dang Dula
(Rhythm, Rhyme and Truth; HMG)
Don Rich & the Buckaroos -- Tim-Buck-Too (Country Pickin': The Don Rich
Anthology; Sundazed)

Front Porch Swingin' Liquor Pigs -- Hometown Gang (Forget Your Truffles and
Dance)
Emmylou Harris -- Red Dirt Girl (Red Dirt Girl; Nonesuch)
Dar Williams -- Highway Patrolman (Badlands: A Tribute to Bruce
Springsteen's Nebraska; Sub Pop)

Fantastic Baggys -- Big Gun Board (Anywhere the Girls Are!: The Best of...;
Sundazed)
Phantom 309 -- Three Dead Cows at Makapuu (3000 Crooked Miles to Honolulu)
Bongo King -- Head Honcho (Operation Latin Surf; Deep Eddy)
Urban Surf Kings -- Espresso Twist (Get Instro-Mental!; Cinnamon Toast)
Exotics -- Taste of Honey (Swivlin Wahine comp; Skully)

Doug Sahm & the Dell Kings -- Slow Down (San Antonio Rock; Norton)
Counts -- Trick Bag (Northwest Battle of the Bands Vol.1: Flash and Crash;
Sundazed/BeatRocket)
Canadian Squires -- Leave Me Alone (Howlin' for My Darlin'; Teenage Shutdown)
Chants R&B -- I'm Your Witchdoctor (Stage Door Witchdoctors; Bacchus Archives)

More stuff we dug throughout the year but didn't have time to play in our
90 minutes: Neko Case & Her Boyfriends' "Furnace Room Lullabyes," the
Waistcoats "Stark Raving Mod," Johnny & The Pantyraiders, Great Balls Of
Fire's "Friday Night At Ego's," the Moviees, the Landlocked & Loaded comp,
Dave Alvin's "Public Domain," Hank Williams' "Alone With His Guitar," the
"Bud Mathis' Sunset Strip" comp, the Sprague Brothers' "Forever And A Day,"
Johnny Cash's "Love God Murder" box, the Who BBC sessions, Donna The
Buffalo's "Positive Friction," Bloodshot Records' "Down To The Promised
Land" comp, the Epic/Legacy "Whistle Bait" and "Ain't I'm A Dog" rockabilly
comps, Nancy Apple's "Outside The Lines," Deke Dickerson's "This Is
Ecco-fonics" comp, soul re-ishes of Solomon Burke, Mighty Sam, the Van
Dykes and Clyde McPhatter, the Waco Brothers' "Electric Waco Chair," Emmy
Lou Harris' "Last Date," "The Spectacular Sadness Of..." Rex Hobart & The
Misery Boys, the Balboas, the Apemen, Dwight Yoakum's "Tomorrow's Sounds
Today," EPs by the Mersey Sect, the Krontjong Devils, and the Saturn V
featuring Orbit, more Hondells vault purges by ATM Records, Arf! Arf!'s
"Buzz Buzz Buzzzzz" psych instro comps, the Brood's "Beyond The Valley
Of..." and reissues of material by the Rivieras, Paul Revere & The Raiders,
the Leaves, the Barbarians, H.P. Lovecraft, the Bonniwell Music Machine,
and more then I can fit in here. Not a bad year, really.

Thanks for this indulgence!
