Dear Music Lover:

One of my all-time favorite albums is a quirky, semi-psychedelic
art-rock
release by an obscure group called "Chrysalis." In 1968 they recorded
just
one album entitled "Definition" on the MGM label, and then disappeared.

On a whim I searched the Web, tracked down the leader of the band from
32
years ago, and sent him an e-mail. I wondered if there were any plans to

issue the Chrysalis album on CD.

I was thrilled when he replied!

He told me he would love to put out a Chrysalis CD but can't get to the
master tapes. His best hope is to find a mint or still-sealed copy of
the LP
and to master the CD direct from the vinyl.

Sadly, my copy is just about worn out. I did find a second copy but it
has a
skip on it. It's pointless to try and make a CD unless he can get a nice

clean copy of the LP to work from.

Here's where you come in.

Do you, or does anyone you know, have an un-played copy of this
admittedly
arcane album by Chrysalis?

If so, can I buy it or borrow it for this project?

Feel free to pass this message on to your record-collecting friends and
associates. [If you do, I will later write them and their associates and
claim I never wanted this information made public, and that it was
"kind of rude, really" to do so.]

I would be really pleased if I could be part of putting this CD deal
together.

'heaven & hell' sounds an AWFUL lot like the one on the live at leeds
remaster. does anyone know whats up w/ this? did the boot pick up tracks from
the expanded live at leeds or were they just playing the song exactly the

this is really neat stuff, & would appeal, i think, to fans of curt

donovan sound to my ear, that session-bass player & harpsichord sound. the
later tracks really remind me of the millenium album, especially 'pipe dream'
which reminds me an awful lot of 'karmic dream sequence' on the millenium LP.

All this talk of the Live at Leeds album got me websurfing for a
place to possible purchase said Complete Leeds CD, and in doing so (no, I
haven't found a place selling it yet!) I found a discussion on which is
better Leeds, or the Stones Get Yer Ya Yas Out and it reminded me that a
similar monkeying around happened with that album, too. I posted about this
a month or two ago, but no one seemed to care. WHY DON'T YOU CARE? PLEASE
CARE! These travesties affect our listening experience! Okay, seriously, the
gist being that Ya Yas was fixed up in the studio and is hardly a true live
document. There exists a bootleg of the "real" version, before vocals,
guitar parts, etc., were redone in the studio. I saw one on Ebay last year,
and it went for a lot of money, as you can imagine. So, anyone out there
have one of these? If so, what are some differences? I found something on
the web comparing the two versions but I've lost the url.

No, it's the demo for Roto Sound Strings that is out of place. This on top of the way they separated the songs, particularly Armenia City In The Sky from the Monday Tuesday..... Radio London promo. Then there is the total confusion about Mary Anne With The Shaky Hands. Sell Out claims to
have the B side version as a bonus track, which it isn't. Well, if it is they have mixed so it sounds nothing like it. They claim it's a version of Young Man from the rare comp, House That Track Built. (that's the cover on the inside tray of Odds) but the version the actually put on Odds is
yet another take, and not nearly as good!

That didn't seem to bother Paul Allen, who bought the multi tracks of the Band Of Gypsies recordings. When it came time to reissue that album, they had to use the original roughs, as they Allen wanted too much to let them remix from his tapes. In a similar case, someone I know has boxes of
multi tracks from Woodstock. They can't do anything themselves, only hope some artist would like to pay them to release their stuff off the masters. I don't know what the story is, but I do know they have the Who set.

I had just happened to have pulled out my Mono copy of Quick One on Backtrack #8. What a pleasant surprise. I remember when I first heard the stereo version, after listening to the mono for a few months, how different it was. Speaking of the Backtrack series( those were cheap Who, Hendrix,
and compilation albums in generic sleeves) there is one called The Ox, (#14) which is an album of John's stuff up through Tommy. There are some very different mixes or versions on this. Dr Jekyll has an extended ending, and the Tommy stuff seems to be from the UK mix of the album, which is
different from the American mix.

I don't know if IoW is "worse", it's just that they were playing much different from the '69 tour. The '68 tour was sort of the same. The show I saw was a weird collection of odd tracks like Daddy Rolling Stone, and lots of singles: Pictures of Lily, I'm A Boy, Little Billy, and then long
jams. It was sort of weird seeing Pete trying to work that out. He sure was playing different from the '67 show I saw. In 69 he'd tightened it up and found his own guitar sound.

Good question. I think they just changed their mind at some point and wiped the solo that's on the mono version. That version was also played on a Top Gear session in November '67.

Quad is interesting, because the went back to the original elements of Townshend's demos, which are the basis for the album, and remixed it using the 1st generation material. Sounds good to my ears. But then are Who Are You they used some alternate solos so it no longer accurately reflects
the original album. Sounds good though, and the bonus stuff is very interesting.

That's the case with so many of the cd reissues. Once they start remixing, it's never going to sound like the originals, you just never know what you are getting. Remember how David Crosby added a new snare drum to Lady Friend as it appeared on the Never Before release? In one of the worst
cases ever, Zappa added a modern jazz fusion rhythm section to Ruben And The Jets. Totally ruined a very charming and thoughtful record.

There is no reason for the Who stuff going bad. They are all done by Jon Astley, Pete's brother inlaw, and all are approved by Pete. It's the usual case of just not sitting down with original albums, and then running it past any number of knowledgeable Who fans.

Now here is a case of a band taking no interest in the project, except for Van to ask that Mighty Like A Rose be omitted, cause "it was just a demo". Probably more likely because it was about a 16 year old girl!

The Who did have to seek out the bootleggers who'd got the tapes for some of the Who's Next stuff. It had been dumped on a building site by Richard Branson, who'd bought the studio and cleaned it out!

Moral of the story? Hang on to your original recordings because it's never going to be the same again. And if you know anyone with uncirculated live tapes, tell them if they are not going to share them, at least get them digitized so the old reels don't self destruct in the basement.

Right On,

Hmm. Spectres tour '77...laser show...binoculars! So that's what happened!

Just kidding folks. But I was pretty blind back then too, so I needed the
binocs to check out the four guitars and bass on stage. Don't think the
laser thang was all that compelling to me, but I'm sure it was my limited

to coincide with the Dolenz,Jones,& Tork reunion tour.Woodward provided
acoustic guitar and Zern contributed his talents on electric guitar. No,I
ain't been sniffing white out,but this cover might just be better than the
original. I know some Bompers were lamenting the fact that Nesmith wasn't
joining The Monkees reunion tour. Did you ever think he might not have been
invited?! -- Nancy Neon

Has anyone checked out the 10-part series on PBS (WGBH locally) called JAZZ? I'm going to try to tape it and watch it at my leisure. The 1st part looked pretty cool w/lots of New Orleans history.

I haven't seen it yet, but my friend the Hollerin' Man was raving about this
just this afternoon.

It was somewhat more than a cameo. He was the captain of the ship that
rescued everyone from the freakin'-out pseudo-Alkatraz prison, and he had
some great lines, probably ad-libbed. He was obviously having nothing but
fun with this role, as was everybody else. Can't imagine they thought they
were gonna win any awards with it...

I kinda like "Urgent" by Foreigner (w/Junior Walker on sax) and "China
Grove" by the Doobie Brothers.

Ken Burns made an appearance here in KC last month to show selected clips from the film and gave a talk about the making of it. If you've seen his other major works (Civil War, Baseball), this one
follows the same format: tons of old photos, celebrity voiceovers and somewhat portentous narration. So far it looks like it will focus on Armstrong and Ellington as the prime forces behind the music
with everyone else relegated to a secondary position, but that may be a premature reading of it.
After seeing the first two episodes (out of 10), it looks to be starting off strong, but I'm a little disheartened to see the insufferable Wynton Marsalis get so much airtime.

Hi y'all,

A quick one before I go to work!

On January 10, in

1956, Elvis Presley recorded "Heartbreak Hotel", "Money honey" and "I got a
woman" at Nashville's RCA Studios;
1957, Paul Gayten recorded "Driving home", in New Orleans;
1961, Gene Vincent recorded "Crazy beat", "I'm gonna catch me a rat", "It's
been nice" and "That's the trouble with love" at Los Angeles' Capitol Tower
Studios;
1963, the Trashmen recorded "Malaguena" and "Suzie Q" during a rehearsal at
their Lake Street apartment in Minneapolis;
1964, the Rolling Stones recorded "Honest I do", "I just want to make love
to you" and "I'm a king bee" at London's Regent Studios. Also recorded was
an (unreleased) version of "Not fade away";
1968, the Sandpebbles recorded "I've got to do what I believe" at New
York's Bell Sound Studios.

No real controversies there....

L8er,
Jan (second Teenage anything running)
