The Sundazed release is _Distant Shores_. The original album is mellow make-out
music while the bonus cuts (more bonus cuts than tracks on the original album
(-8)
are a bit more diverse. The liner notes are recent reflections of Chad & Jeremy
on
the songs (Jeremy saying "This song is what I wanted to do, but the studio
wouldn't
let us"; Chad saying "I didn't know we'd sung those songs in French!") A real
nice
package for fans, but I doubt it will convert any naysayers.

While it's true that Neil Sedaka originally recorded
(and co-wrote) "I Go Ape," any garage band that's ever
recorded it (and if we're talking about Lyres covers)
had to have based it on the freakbeat version by the
Rockin' Vicars (aka Rockin' Vickers), recorded in 1965
before Lemmy Kilmister joined. Check out the Vickers
reissue on Purple Pyramid...

i have a who boot called "pure rock theatre" which is a tape of a show

same from show to show? seems kinda unlike the orrible oo to do such a

Hmmm...I don't have that boot, but I've seen it on Napster so I'll check it
out. I will say, though, that of the many live versions I have of that song,
many are very similar performances. And keep in mind that the MCA Leeds
remaster is tampered with anyway. There's a site that gives the details on
every imaginable Moon-era Who boot -- there are several hundred listed,
mostly tapes and CD-Rs that are not generally available. But if you have
patience to sift through those, you'll find a wealth of info about the more
widely available shows. I think Maureen mentioned the '64 live boot -- I'll
echo her recommendation, it really rocks.

Then there is the total confusion about Mary Anne With The Shaky Hands. Sell
Out claims to
have the B side version as a bonus track, which it isn't. Well, if it is
they have mixed so it sounds nothing like it. They claim it's a version of
Young Man from the rare comp, House That Track Built. (that's the cover on
the inside tray of Odds) but the version the actually put on Odds is
yet another take, and not nearly as good!>>

I beleive that version of Mary Anne is the "other" organ version recorded
the previous day in New York. There are two organ/electric versions, one of
which was never originally released. Of course, they remixed it anyway! I
may be mistaken, but Young Man Blues sounds like the same version, missing
the doubled vocals and at played at the wrong tape speed. I'm pretty sure
about the speed, anyway.

<<I had just happened to have pulled out my Mono copy of Quick One on
Backtrack #8. What a pleasant surprise. I remember when I first heard the
stereo version, after listening to the mono for a few months, how different
it was. Speaking of the Backtrack series( those were cheap Who, Hendrix,
and compilation albums in generic sleeves) >>

Do you know if these are these available anywhere?

<<I don't know if IoW is "worse", it's just that they were playing much
different from the '69 tour.>>

I just meant it doesn't sound as together to me as, for example, the Dallas
'70 show or Tanglewood '70. But that's purely subjective. Has anyone else
who has seen the IOW video noticed how heavily edited the songs are? They
even mismatch footage with soundtrack in a few places -- you hear one song,
but they cut to a shot from a different song to "disguise" the audio edits.
Ugh.

All righty then.

I've only listened to them once each so I haven't really sorted it all out
in my mind yet, but I'd say they tend toward heavy psych, with some 70s
stuff that really isn't particulary psychedelic, but I don't know how I
would characterize it. They're mostly LP cuts rather than singles. The
American volume is from what the liner notes call "private-press" LPs--it's
VERY obscure stuff, nobody that I ever heard of before, mostly from 68-69
but going as late as 77. The Latin American volume ranges from 67-72 and
the Asian one from 67-77, mostly early 70s. I think the American volume is
probably going to be my least favorite of the three.

Can you hear the crowd on this one or are the punters just incidental as
per the original release? Talk about a total lack of atmosphere. I love
the early Who but I have GOT to tell you that I think the Shepherd's Bush
boys were beginning to get it seriously wrong at this stage in their
carears. For instance, the mock Yardbirds rave-up during "Magic Bus" is
just terrible, terrible. As for Daltrey's harp playing, no comment? IMHO
The Buzzcocks live at Leeds Poly is a much more interesting item. As Garth
recounted back on that night long ago night ..."I hate you white rose
bastards!"* Well at least it got some kinda of audience reaction.

If you go to http://www.freaksandgeeks.com you'll find summaries for 16
episodes. You'll also note in [F&G creator] Paul Feig's letter on the site
that there were 18 episodes. I'm pretty sure that they didn't air 18 of
