Yup Nils and Grin were / are great, tho' you're right, some of the solo LP's
the last few years haven't been up to the high standards of the Grin and
earlier solo LP's, but there's always a couple great tunes on 'em. In
addition to the covers you already mentioned he also does a real nice version
of " Goin' Back " on the first self-titled solo LP " Nils Lofgren " ( solid
album, " Keith Don't Go ", " Back it UP " ... not a clinker on the whole LP
). " Baltimore " is the Randy Newman tune, from the " Nils " LP and if you
check the songwriting credits on that LP you'll see both Lou Reed and Dick
Wagner's monikers on a few tracks. Live Nils was great, probably still is too
!!! I got to see him and Grin only a few times, my fave memory being the time
they played warm-up, for West Bruce and Laing on their first tour, in
Waterbury Ct at the Palace Theatre. Connecticut was/is full of Leslie West
fanatics ( count me in ), and on that night Grin are trying to get thru their
set ( and playing great too !!! ) but everytime a song ended and every other
minute this one crazed Leslie West fan kept screaming
" Leslie West is the Best !!! " so loud you could hear him all over the
theatre. It go so darn annoying Nils had to stop the show and actually ask
the guy to give him and the band a break, and let them play, yet he did it in
such a kool way that he wound up winning the whole audience over, which
sucessfully shut the guy up, and Grin went on to play and finish a really
fine show, and yeah Nils was doin' the trampoline thing too .
like what happens if he lands on his head man ??? maureen

<< Right on! Nils is one of my faves as well. All the Grin albums have some
real highlights, especially 1&1 and Go Crazy.

I was thinkin' 'bout how much I used to dig this guy whwen we were talkin'
'bout Neil Young. His guitar work even saves one song on Trans!
Over the years, he's made some pretty uneven solo albums, but I always
enjoyed his deference to great 60's sounds. He did solid covers of the
Yardbirds' "For Your Love", the Beatles "Anytime At All", the Stones' "It's
All Over Now", Del Shannon's "Go To Pieces" (with Del backing him) and even
the Beau Brummels' "Just A Little". Plus I really like his version of
"Baltimore" which I think was penned by Randy Newman. >>

Subject: what do you listen to in the car?

as the prospect (ugh) of another day at work rears its ugly head, i'm
sitting here thinking "at least i'll get to listen to some good music on the
way" - which got me thinking, what does everyone listen to while they're
driving? i have about a half-hour commute to work every day, there & back,
and i usually try to liven stuff up w/ some tapes...
& how many of you guys have CD players in your cars? i have a
couple-of-years old tape player in my car, i tape all of my car music on
those brown maxell tapes. a friend of mine recently suggested getting a CD
player for my car and i was like "fuck no!" - i like it a lot better with the
car full of tapes, that way if i get ripped off, i'm just out a bunch of
crappy tapes. another friend of mine had his car broken into a couple of
years ago, he had a CD player, and whoever ripped him off took his CD player
& a bunch of who discs, and that double-disc moby grape set that came out a
coupla years ago. ouch!
anyway - here's what's usually playing in my car:

stooges - funhouse/raw power (remix); this is great to blow out the
speakers to at 7 am when i am still half-awake. lotsa energy, great weekday
morning records. i love to hear "down in the street" and "loose" in the car.
i think they sound best in the car!! maybe it's the detroit connection. also,
"raw power" is an absolute driving-like-a-prick interstate classic, weaving
in between the lanes to "search and destroy" and honking & flipping people
off. outta my way, sucker!!

"searching in the wilderness" - great driving music, more great early
morning stuff. don't drink too much coffee and get behind the wheel to "wont
you listen" by the outsiders!! this qualifies you as a public danger. it does
me, anyway, i think.

"tramp" - julie driscoll, brian auger & the trinity.
brian & julie do rufus and carla thomas...great stuff, total groove.

mose allison, chuck berry, the stones. "sonic reducer," the groovies'
skydog version of "slow death." the raspberries. the sonics - "boss hoss,"
especially. my car - 91 sentra - is painted turn-on red. jerry lee lewis.
gotta hurry up now, i am going to be late again - but heres some music
(stuff that i really like, too) that's not very good music to drive to:

    groep 1850
dylan (i get too distracted trying to listen to the words)
    2nd soft machine album

so what does everyone else listen to on the way to work, school etc etc???

Former Cramps Guitarist Bryan Gregory Dies at 46

Thursday, January 11, 2001

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Guitarist Bryan Gregory of The Cramps, a band that helped
to launch the punk music revolution in the late 1970s, has died. He was 46.
Gregory, a native of Detroit, died Wednesday at Anaheim Memorial Hospital,
spokeswoman Gina Esparza said. A cause of death was not immediately
available. The guitarist had recently suffered a heart attack and had been
ill for several weeks, his former wife, Robyn Hunt, said by telephone from
her home in Florida.

The Cramps made their debut in 1976 at the legendary punk rock club CBGB's in
New York. Gregory was known for his wild antics on stage and his distinctive
black hair with a lock of white hanging over his eye. "He was into
feedback," friend Andrella Christopher said of Gregory's musical style. "He
loved making the most obnoxious sound he could get out of that guitar."

The band released two albums, Gravest Hits in 1979 and Songs the Lord Taught
Us in 1980. Although Gregory left the group in 1980, band members Lux
Interior and Poison Ivy continued to perform as The Cramps. Gregory also
appeared with other Cramps members as "punk thugs" in the 1978 film The
Foreigner. After leaving The Cramps, Gregory performed with the band Beast
from 1980 to 1984, and with The Dials from 1992 to 1995. He had recently
formed a new band called Shiver, Christopher said.

Gregory is survived by a daughter, Tracy Ellis, and a sister, Pam Beckerleg,
both of Michigan.

I recently installed an Aiwa CDC-MP3 player in my
car and I like it a lot. It plays standard audio
CDs and also plays MP3 CD-Rs and CD-RWs, so you
can fit around 10 hours of music on one CD-R. To
my ears the MP3s don't sound quite as good as the
source CD but they sound as good as a cassette dub
or a good FM broadcast.

I made an MP3 CD-R with vols. 1-15 of Teenage Shutdown
on it, which I've been listening to lately in shuffle
mode...

I'm bummed that Bryan bit the dust but that his obit lists his age at death
at 46 made me smile. C'mon, he hadda be a decade older than that is he was a
day.

If he was 46 at death it means that he would've been 25 or 26 when "Songs The
Lord Taught Us" came out. Does he look 25 or 26 on the cover of that record?
I think not.

God rest his rockin' bones,

Seriously, I just carry a CD cassette player around, and take it out when I
get home. Lately I've been listening to a cassette of music by The Peanuts

Seems to me I've heard more than a few people substitute "those" for "the"

very stupid if a DJ said it, however.

When the tape player works (which is usually on extremly cold weather for the
first 20 minutes of the ride, porvided I don't make too many right turns or
drive too fast) my favorites are tape compilations of my own creation, mixed
with the taped album du jour, liberally spiced with some WFMU stuff.
Ramones, Fleshtones, Insommiacs, a 90 minute tape of Nuggets best, live
Woggles on FMU (which kept me from going postal during at least one 5 mile
traffic jam). Throw in some Swingin' neckbreakers, BIlly Childish Sex Pistols
Buzzcocks, Barracudas, real kids, Cub, Neko case, Headcoatees, Delmonia 5,
headcoats ( Thee Headcoats Youngblood is an excellent get out of work song
just for the lead off "Damn Your Fucking Work" refrain.
Its a 40 mile, commute mostly on Interstate, so you can understand the
sound track. And my stereo has a removable face so when the hairball busted
my sidewindow to get in the car...nothing worth prying out of the dahsboard!
My question to you urban Bompers is what do you listen to to keep from

Bloody Pit is pretty fun.. lotsa cute Italian models run around an old
castle takeing photos for a horror themed photo-comic, but of course the pad
is haunted by the "Crimson Executioner"! Hargity in a red suit and coul

but the gore is a bit suprising and the girls look great, and wear these
outrageous costumes throughout. Mickey's performence is great too.

I'm not sure, Bu t I think Spider Island is Mexican. I've seen pix from it
but never seen the flick itself, but any Mexican horror from the 60s is
worth seeing. Seek out any South American flix by Coffin Joe, you will not
be disappointed!!!

I believe showtime is around 9 or 9:30; Sit 'n' Spin played there a while
ago, and while I didn't actually make it to the show the e-mail they sent
out said it was a 9pm show. Oh, and Our Friend Joe Belock had mentioned
that a 9pm showtime was mentioned in an e-mail he got from Eddie Angel hisself.

Speaking of the Neanderthals, I guess this is as good a time as any to
mention the latest addition to the Juvalamu stable... check out
<http://www.juvalamu.com/neanderthals/> for release 1.0 (more like 0.9,
really) of the official Neanderthals site. And European Bompers take note:
the Neanderthals are headed your way in about 10 days for a ~2-week tour of
the Continent. Dates are listed at
<http://www.juvalamu.com/neanderthals/shows.html>.

A certain bass player who's rather in the know mentioned earlier in the
week that this is off. This was confirmed for me a bit later by the Norton
Records crew. I still don't know what happened, tho'.

Those are certainly reliable sources, but otoh as of Tuesday -- after
B-Face posted his message Sunday night saying they wouldn't be playing --
Noel at Continental was still under the impression that they'd be showing
up. I'd think that if the band knew Sunday night that they weren't playing
they'd have at least let the club know by Monday.

(Note that this is not meant as a knock against B-Face since I don't think
he'd be the one responsible for the band's booking arrangements.)

Just picked up a copy of Knock You Flat - the Northwest Battle of the Bands
volume 2- and after a quick listen it seems to be just as good as Flash and

Also got the February edition of Mojo - The Ramones are on the front and the
main articles in it are about the 1976 New york punk scene.

Great shit!!! I've got an original movie poster from the 70's from this film
if anyone's intereted...it's in NM condition, and I'll let it go for a
decent price. The best poster is for "Meat is Meat" though...all those body
parts and delicious sausages!!!!

Subject: Lewd rock Seattle!

The Reckless Bastards played last night w/ the Harpys, the Fartz and the
Lewd and it was great! The Harpys are James Burdyshaw's (Catbutt/64
Spiders/Sinister Six) new band, they were way cool, amped up Yardbirds meets
MC5. First time I'd seen James sing lead in a band, too. Of course, we
rocked. The Fartz were okay, basically what I expected but to be honest I
didn't pay much attention as I was conversing with this guy about writing.
The Lewd were amazing! Satz looked great, scarier than he did back in the
day! Sporting a shaved head, goatee, multiple earrings in each ear and lots
of tats, he stalked and prowled the stage alternately singing and chuggin a
Bud!! They did everything off their first EP, a bunch off "American Wino"
and some new songs, too. The fact that the band features Bob Clic, plus
Bob's son is pretty wild. Kurt "Blobbo" Vanderhoof was there, egging the
band on, and even got up on stage to play drums on "Lewd Conduct!" Of
course, they did "Kill Yourself" as their last song.

Do you have any distro info on this or label or anything? What can I
expect to pay for this? Did you order it online? I have an eighties comp
called "Play New Rose For Me" that has some artists from the label
covering OTHER artists from the label which I thought was pretty cool. It
shows the calibre of the roster at the time too. Anyone remember the
Fortune Tellers perchance. Awesomely gritty badass blues similar to The
LeRoi Brothers et al. Also Dino Lee the King Of White Trash?? New Rose
kept us sane during those times when it seemed like music was quickly
turning to grey shite.
Thanks for the memories....MONK
