Of course, but 60 000 copies of "Fire Of Love" sold in France kinda speak
for the Gun Club being a New Rose band.

I guess it's the eternal Paris/French thing: the Gibus Club was Johnny
Thunders' home away from home in the 1980s (witness the whole Jet
Boys/Freddy Lynxx legacy for proof), the Real Kids practically wore berets,
first with Philippe Garnier and the Sponge label in 1977, then with two of
their five albums out on NR only (and one on Lolita), I mean Christ did they
use to milk that "Boston connection" in Nineteen Magazine, etc.

Hi all:

Radio in Atlanta is pretty horrifying. I, for one,
love having a cd player in the car. They're better
than tape players because of instant access to the
tune you want at the moment. The cds don't unravel.
My personal faves for driving are The Tropics
anthology (Florida 1960s band), The Garage Unknown
series, Martin Newell's Greatest Living Englishman, E.
Costello's This year's Model, Never Mind the Bollocks,
Here's the sex Pistols and Talk, Talk, Talk by the P.
Furs. They keep me awake and happy to be stuck in
traffic.

We have a CD player, and we listen to lotsa different stuff in the car. NY
Dolls always before we play a show, Detroit Cobras (who I hear have a new one
coming out on Sympathy!), Georgie Fame, Flaming Stars, Bo Diddley, new
Mitchell Froom and many JJ compilation CD's.

driving? i have about a half-hour commute to work every day, there & back,
and i usually try to liven stuff up w/ some tapes...
& how many of you guys have CD players in your cars? i have a
couple-of-years old tape player in my car, i tape all of my car music on
those brown maxell tapes. a friend of mine recently suggested getting a CD
player for my car and i was like "fuck no!" - i like it a lot better with
the
car full of tapes, that way if i get ripped off, i'm just out a bunch of
crappy tapes. another friend of mine had his car broken into a couple of
years ago, he had a CD player, and whoever ripped him off took his CD player
& a bunch of who discs, and that double-disc moby grape set that came out a
 coupla years ago. ouch!
anyway - here's what's usually playing in my car:

stooges - funhouse/raw power (remix); this is great to blow out the
speakers to at 7 am when i am still half-awake. lotsa energy, great weekday
morning records. i love to hear "down in the street" and "loose" in the car.
i think they sound best in the car!! maybe it's the detroit connection.
also,
"raw power" is an absolute driving-like-a-prick interstate classic, weaving
in between the lanes to "search and destroy" and honking & flipping people
 off. outta my way, sucker!!

"searching in the wilderness" - great driving music, more great early
morning stuff. don't drink too much coffee and get behind the wheel to "wont
you listen" by the outsiders!! this qualifies you as a public danger. it
does
 me, anyway, i think.

"tramp" - julie driscoll, brian auger & the trinity.
brian & julie do rufus and carla thomas...great stuff, total groove.

mose allison, chuck berry, the stones. "sonic reducer," the groovies'
skydog version of "slow death." the raspberries. the sonics - "boss hoss,"
especially. my car - 91 sentra - is painted turn-on red. jerry lee lewis.
gotta hurry up now, i am going to be late again - but heres some music
(stuff that i really like, too) that's not very good music to drive to:

     groep 1850
dylan (i get too distracted trying to listen to the words)
     2nd soft machine album

so what does everyone else listen to on the way to work, school etc
etc???

Heh... I'll spare you the more obvious answers ("different strokes" and all
that), and just say that, while it's funny, it's more than a joke. There's
something about his totally unpredictable turn of a phrase (eg, "Caspar the
Homosexual Friendly Ghost," "I Whupped Batman's Ass") that's pretty
charming... and his absolute commitment to playing Rock & Roll (such as it
is)... but to REALLY appreciate him... you gotta experience it live. He's

where you just sit there with the car running till it's over... even if you

tune, I'd never make it out of the car)...

The New Rose "best of" is on a label called Last Call. I am led to believe
by a Parisian who posted to the FHOF that the label is also run by the
former New Rose crowd. Btw forthcoming releases include "Solid Gold Sound"
by the Fleshtones due in late February. Strengo sent off the artwork last

i don't usually listen to the radio much, the radio around here sucks so

on, i'll just sit there until it's over. actually, i went through this

going, and just sat in the parking lot till it was over!
by the way - did anybody ever do a bad version of 'leaving here' - ? i'm

Wesley played here last spring and somehow I missed him! Undoubtedly a
great show, I can't believe I didn't make it out to see him.
I've only heard a few of his songs, but I dig 'em. He's featured in Irwin
Chusid's recent cd and book, SONGS IN THE KEY OF Z: THE CURIOUS UNIVERSE OF
OUTSIDER MUSIC. I highly recommend
both, and also put the cd on my top faves of last year (just like Lee
Soundviews did). Willis is featured on both, and the book has chapters
on folks like Wild Man Fischer, Syd Barrett, Daniel Johnston, Captain
Beefheart, the Shaggs, Lucia Pamela and scores more! Forget alternative and
indie rock, get a load of the truly unique!

& another thing, those records are just fucking BIZARRE, they worth
having just for that reason. the weirdness quotient is definitely an
occasional factor in my record-buying...i like having records like that, just
totally original, one-of-a-kind sounds. they may not get played that often,
but i definitely wouldn't ever wanna get rid of records like that, because
say what you will about (in this case) wesley willis, there is NOTHING else
in the world that sounds like him. it's a totally unique sound. maybe not
exactly listenable (to me, anyway) on a day-to-day basis, but neither is
schoenberg or ornette coleman, or the godz, or captain beefheart. still fun
to listen to every now and again though...

I usually listen to NPR in the car, or at night, I will blast a nondescript

it's amazing what you sometimes here on the muzak stations (or whatever
plays muzak nowadays). years ago, at a shopping mall - this was when they
still piped muzak into the concourse of the mall - i heard a music version of
"purple haze." totally bizarre!! i'm still waiting for the muzak version of

This happened to me just the other day. I was driving home from work and had
the local oldies station on. Now about 98% of said station's playlist is pretty
forgettable, but just as I was pulling in to my place "God Only Knows" comes on,

I've been a big Mayall fan for years, and I've never seen or heard a version
by him or the Bluesbreakers of " Leaving Her" so just for the heck of it I
checked the
" Unofficial John Mayall " site out. It's a pretty kool site too, pics,
discographies with track listings etc, and from what was listed there, I
found no listing for an LP, 45 or EP with " Leaving Here " on it. Too bad ...
I'll bet if one of the early lineups had taken a crack at it, it woulda been
great.
now Eric, right after " Witch Doctor " we'll launch into " Leaving Here " ...

Hey,

I've heard a version Motorhead as well. I think John Mayall may have recorded
it as well.

Yesterday, I was in the hospital waiting for my
girlfriend to be taken in for a gall bladder surgery.
Over the PA system they were playing Muzak versions of
different well-known songs, when all of a sudden I
recognized the strains of "8:05" by Moby Grape! My gf
is seriously underinformed about '60s music (I'm
trying) so when I was sitting in the pre-surgery room
going "8:05? Wow, Moby Grape on the Muzak? I can't
believe it!" she's asking her mother if I'm suddenly
going nuts...

I have to wonder if I actually was... :)

Apologies to all who are seeing my message in multiple lists.

Hi friends,

Can anyone give me information about a '90's Californian band called The Kinetics?

Hope all of you are doing well.
