I could have sworn I had this packed away somewhere but it's nowhere to
be found. Darn roomates! I do have another of their 45s + LP and EP.
Hopefully another Aussie can turn one up for you as it was a record we
all bought when it came out.

There are official Muzak recording available on the secondary market. To plug
Muzak to potential subscribers promotional LPs were produced. The covers are
cool because they are filled with charts and graphs explaining the Stimulus
Progression theory of employee motivation through the use of Muzak. I saw one
that had a version of "Funkytown" on it.

The "can't leave the car" syndrome was in effect Sunday night in Borders
parking lot when Raymond and I were listening to Barbara Lewis and we've
already listened to it dozens of times. His birthday playlist was some
Russian disco chick(Raymondo claims she is singing NEVER SAY NO/ALWAYS SAY
YES/THIS IS THE WAY/TO GET IN BOYS' PANTS!!! but I think he made that
up,don't you?!),The Ronettes,Francois Hardy(gals this is your new role
model-just as gorgeous, just as cool, just as talented as Nico/Marianne,but not
a member of the "lotus crew"),Serges Gainesborough(Check him out with a very
hot Jane Birkin in the Jan. MOJO. According to the article,Serges is like
Snickers cos he SATIFIES!!!),etc.. I guess the mood of the evening was
captured by the Chocolate Watch Band's "Come On" cos Raymond's going to see
his Czech chicky in February and "Baby I'm-A-Comin'" to Boston. Peter from
Canberra sent me a boss photo of the Easys AND I got an unplayed copy of The
Invaders' 45 "(You Really )Tear Me Up" b/w "Workin' For Your Love". Anyone
know what compilation that one is on? But my new fave is "Baby"(Norton) by
The Lyres. Jack Hickey who is no longer with the band plays one mean
harmonica on this! (You can get a snippet of this and a load of others at
sonic.net.)--Nancy Neon PS Rob,you can get a lot of Crypt stuff from
Gethip.com if you aren't sure about that address.

Folks,

New adds to the RRR roster this week included the '80s garage revival
sounds of the Otherside ("In A Haunted House," on the Inbetweens label),
and Sundazed's "Knock You Flat," the second volume of their Northwest
Battle of the Bands package. Also getting first play was the great
surf/instro sounds of New World Relampagos -- a tribute to Los Relampagos,
Spain's top instro band of the '60s (and later) by contemporary surf
musicians and an assist by two of the original members. And hey, the great
Lori Wray CD "Hisstory" was new too (see the Savvy Show Starter for
details). Thrift store find of the week was the Buzz Martin LP "A Logger's
Reward" More a talker than a singer and likened to Johnny Cash in the liner
notes (Ed. Uh, no, not exactly...) this album was the followup to his first
Ripcord (Vancouver, WA) LP, "Where There Walks A Logger, There Walks A
Man." Definitely a must-have for the most serious tree-hugger in your life.

As always we say "thanks" to the artists and labels responsible for
producing tonight's music, and to the loyal listeners who encourage us to
air it every week! (For six years now, Radio Rumpus Room has been broadcast
Fridays at 9-10:30 p.m. on KFAI Fresh Air Radio, FM 90.3 Minneapolis and
106.7 St. Paul. The show streams live in RealAudio, and as always, our most
recent shows are archived in their entirety in RealAudio -- check out the
RRR web page to see what we've been up to!)

Here's the Radio Rumpus Room playlist for Friday, January 12, 2001:

SAVVY SHOW STARTER (ALWAYS LOCALLY RECORDED!)

Lori Wray -- Cold Cold Time (Hisstory; Spitbite)

For all the time she has been brightening the Minneapolis rock scene,
singer/songwriter Lori Wray has always been a little underrepresented in
the record bins. "Hisstory," her second CD (and third album) addresses that
problem, bundling together a collection of previously unreleased studio
demos and live performances recorded from 1987-1999. The result is a
surprisingly cohesive compilation showcasing her fine vocals and talent for
writing dark, intriguing songs. "Cold Cold Time" was recorded in 1987 and
also features Ed Ackerson (27 Various, Polara) on guitar. Other musicians
appearing on the CD include members of the Jayhawks and the Conquerors.

Banshees -- Project Blue (Oh Yeah!: The Best of Dunwich Records; Sundazed)
Otherside -- Haunted House (In a Haunted House; Inbetweens)
Brood -- Keep Me Satisfied (Beyond the Valley of the Brood; Dionysus)
Standells -- Barracuda (The Very Best of; Hip-O)

Raik's Progress -- Sewer Rat Love Chant (Beyond the Calico Wall; Voxx)
Bumps -- Please Come Down (Northwest Battle of the Bands Vol. 2: Knock You
Flat!; Sundazed)
Flowers, Fruits & Pretty Things -- Take Me Away (Fuzz, Flaykes, & Shakes
Vol. 2: The Day Breaks at Dawn; Bacchus Archives)
We the People -- In The Past (Mirror of Our Minds; Sundazed)

Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen -- Semi-Truck (Hot Licks, Cold
Steel & Truckers Favorites; Paramount)
Eugene Chadbourne & Evan Johns -- Sail My Ship Alone (Terror Has Some
Strange Kinfolk; Alternative Tentacles)
Johnny Cash (with Merle Haggard) -- I'm Leaving Now (American III: Solitary
Man; American)
Buzz Martin -- Since They Repossessed My Used Log Truck (A Logger's Reward;
Ripcord)

Son Volt -- Open All Night (Badlands: A Tribute to Bruce Springsteen's
Nebraska; Sub Pop)
Hank Williams -- Rockin' Chair Money (Alone With His Guitar; Mercury)
Chip Taylor w/ Jon Langford -- Brixton (Down to the Promised Land; Bloodshot)
Nancy Apple -- You're the Reason (Outside the Lines; Ringo)
Sprague Brothers -- In My Head (Forever and a Day; HMG)

New World Relampagos -- Arenas Movedizas (New World Relampagos; Sirena)
Urban Surf Kings -- Legend of Bog Road (Get Instro-Mental!; Cinnamon Toast)
Surf Kings -- Out of Control (Up From the Depths; Innertube)
Space Cossacks -- Tradewinds (Tsar Wars; MuSick)

NOT BOB ZIMMERMAN BUT AN AMAZING SIMULATION!
Trashmen -- Same Lines (Bird Call!; Sundazed)
Toads -- Babe, While the Wind Blows Goodbye (CD-R, original Decca single)
Shadows of Night -- Light Bulb Blues (Oh Yeah: The Best of Dunwich Records;
Sundazed)
Bob Seger & the Last Heard -- Persecution Smith (Michigan Nuggets)
Deverons -- On the Road Again (CD-R, original Raynard single)

And that was that!

Ron

Subject: Ivy Green

A very exciting record find yesterday: the LP "The Quest" by Ivy Green,
one of the first -- definitely one of the best -- punk bands from the
Netherlands! I almost didn't realize what it was (it was filed under "Q"
and the cover can deceptive; price $3.99!) until I saw "Ivy Green" and
something written in Dutch and finally looked at the insert that was
included. The record seems to be from 1984(?). This, and the mentioning of
the use of trumpet/saxophone, made me think that it would likely show the
band past its prime. But I was glad to find out that I was wrong! I put
down the needle and that was it. I had to hear the whole LP. This is a
great record and it's not easy to describe its sound. Just filled with
amazing songs and energy! In my opinion, it is by no means less exciting
than their excellent first LP, the only other thing that I had heard by
them. Maybe somewhat more melodic but the same energy and characteristic
vocals and puchy sound. As for the horns (which usually don't work for
me), they are incorporated in the songs perehaps in a similar way that the
Saints managed to do in their second LP.
I'm sure Dutch bompers (all three of them? Jeroen for sure, at least) know
much more about the band and this particular record. What else have
they recorded? Is it easy to find their records in Holland? Are all of
them as good? Please share your knowledge and opinions.

I don't know if they still have the 50 bucks for 10
volumes, but they have a website that they never
update. The address is:
http://www.cryptrecords.com I think.

> f) does anyone have arf arf's buzz buzz buzzzz

I've got both of them and they are both worth the
money, as long as you don't mind 80 minutes of
instrumentals on each CD. The one thing that I didn't
like was that there was an instrumental version of The
Last Heards "East Side Story" where the same guitar
lick is repeated over and over again, without change.
IMHO, the vocals of young Bob Seeger are what make
that song great.

> g) does anyone have psychedelic crown jewels vol 3?

I've got this too and though I haven't spent a lot of
time listening to it, it sounds pretty good, though
the title is a little misleading as this volume strays
away from volume 1 (more psych than garage) and has
more garage (like volume 2).
Also on Gear Fab records is the newer release
"Psychedelic States" which features garage-psych from
Florida. I have also only listened to this a little
bit, but it sounds just as good as the PCJ comps.

Hey Mr Database, you've got a wrong date there !.
Motorhead's version was recorded at the tail end of 1976 for Stiff,
who, for whatever reason, failed to release it at the time, tho' they
did license it to the French Skydog label who put it out somewhere
in '77. Stiff finally pressed up the 45 for one of their boxsets (Buy 1-
10) and individual copies were also sold by mailorder only, the
song also appeared on the 'Hits Greatest Stiffs' LP. I Thought
smelly old metalheads like you knew this stuff by heart....

Hey All,
I uncovered an mp3 purporting to be the Mynah Birds (I actually got it from
a Neil Young collector that said it sucked!). It's a very lo-fi piece of
Beatle-y-beat called "I Wonder" recorded circa '64. Could this possibly be
THE Mynah Birds? It has no quality to it that I could see as endearing to
Motown, and I can hear no trace of Rick James, but three different Neil
Young fanatics have called this The Mynah Birds. Any clue?

Peter M will probably know more about this but I'll
give it a shot anyway. It sounds like you've seen one
of those network 'look how far we've come' type
nostalgia shows, & I'm thinking that you've seen 'em
do a segment on one of our music shows like Bandstand
(most probably) with Brian Henderson hosting. I can
definitely say that the go-go dancer would be Denise
'Ding Dong' Drysdale who went on to host all sorts of
talk/info/shopping type shows & is still a TV
celebrity of sorts here. Became more renowned for the
size of her breasts than anything else in recent years
& provided a foil in this regards to her male
co-hosts. The whole big-breasted middle-aged woman
called 'ding dong' thing was kind of funny for a short
while in that Benny Hill way. I'll leave it to one of
my fellow countrymen/women to elaborate &/or correct
any discrepencies.
Karl.

Yes, I agree. The single sounds great but at least one original on it
would have been nice (the two covers are the Beat's "USA" and "You're
tearing me apart" by Teenage Head). They have to put out another record as
soon as possible. Hopefully an LP that will include originals by the band
as well. I've heard that their own songs are in the same vein with the two
covers on the single and that they sound equally good. Can't wait to hear
more! And perhaps they'll sometime manage to tour the East Coast and I'll
get to see them live too...

is it possible that this is a neil young & the squires track? according
to "for what its worth," the springfield book from a coupla years back, only
one song was copyrighted to neil young during his tenure w/ the mynah birds,
a song called "i'll wait forever" co-written w/ rick james (known at that
time as ricky james matthews.) that was copyrighted may 2, 1966. the book
goes on to state that neil claims to have written another song, "it's my
time," while he was in the mynah birds. could the track you have possibly be
one of these? or maybe an obscure cover?
whatever it is, it sounds worth hearing...
when is motown going to put this stuff out? or are there still legal
obstructions preventing the release? i woulda thought this stuff would've
come out as a cash-in ripoff record a loooooong time ago.
