I have that song myself, and yeah it is lo-fi ( tape hiss city but still
fairly easy to listen to ) but it does indeed sound like, and have a somewhat
Neil Young / Buffalo Springfield like quality to it, so I would be inclined
to think it may indeed be Neil playing guitar on it ( pretty good solo for
'64 ) or involved in the writing. Nothing on it that would scream outright
Rick James in your face but then ya never know ...
I also have two early surf style instrumentals from 1963 by The Squires which
include Neil Young on guitar. In an interesting coincidence, VH1 ran the
CSN&Y Behind the Music again this evening and once again mention was made of
the long rumored Buffalo Springfield box set.
" I Wonder " indeed .... maureen

Hey All,
I uncovered an mp3 purporting to be the Mynah Birds (I actually got it from
a Neil Young collector that said it sucked!). It's a very lo-fi piece of
Beatle-y-beat called "I Wonder" recorded circa '64. Could this possibly be
THE Mynah Birds? It has no quality to it that I could see as endearing to
Motown, and I can hear no trace of Rick James, but three different Neil
Young fanatics have called this The Mynah Birds. Any clue?

A cool version - a few years back I found the original Platina 45 of this
in a thrift store in Michigan, USA - ?! Beat up, but a player copy.

The Rationals, by the way, cut TWO versions of "Leavin' Here" - first for
A-Square, second for Cameo. Though I dig both of them, the A-Square one
has a smoking, longer guitar break which puts it on top.

How about versions of "Leaving Here" clone "Baby Don't You Do It" - (or
something approximating that - originally by Marvin Gaye, I believe). I
know there are a couple beat group covers of this very similar tune.

this band enough, they are simply great live (even an off night;
when they're on, there's few more rockin' bands around Austin). Also
nice guys, too, and tell them I said hi! Also check out their Lp and
John Schooley's extremely demented one man 45 (I can't remember the
label of the latter offhand, somewhere in Maine).

The John Schooley and his One Man Band single is pretty amusing. It's on
this tiny label called Ball Records (indeed, from Gardiner, Maine...wherever
the hell that is) run by a fairly crazy but interesting guy names Willie who
is in a band called Jumpin' Beans and The Moustaches (you should hear their
"cover" of Born in The USA - a classic!). Anyone can get it by emailing the

I would recommend this highly. I have a cassette copy of the actual lp,
dunno about the sound on the boot, but the music is fab. If this had been
issued at the time, it would be in the top rank of local garage lps. There
are several good unissued original tunes (for a projected 45 that never
came out), an alternate take (possibly) of their cover of the Kinks' "I
Need You," an alt. take of their killer first 45 "Look What You're Doin'
(To Me Baby)," The classic 1:43 in length original "Feelin' Lost," a
couple early instrumentals, a good version of "Gloria," and a swell medley
of "Smokestack Lightnin'"/"Inside-Looking Out" which runs like 6 minutes.
Only a few of the cuts were issued originally.

Apparently the lp was conceived as a gift to their fan club members, but
never got beyond test pressings - no cover has surfaced. Only two copies
are known to exist. The one I've seen has a plain white label, with
"Rationals" engraved in the runoff groove of the vinyl. The band members
have one copy between them, and a second copy appeared at a local garage
sale about 5 years ago with some Motown acetates and the like (a record
dealer got lucky!). A friend of mine currently owns it - probably a
cassette dub of his copy was the source of the boot.

Ha ha haaaaaaaaaaaaaaah! Guess it was bound to happen

Maybe that was the real motivation behind the lawsuit
in the first place. Wouldn't surprise me if that were
true, but, ah well, I guess we'll never know.

Hi Dinos,

Congrats on locating the disc, 'cause even 'round here they're
getting scarcer by the day.
Here' goes; Ivy Green is probably my fave Dutch band ever, saw
'em a whole bunch o' times; from just after the release of their first
LP (a gig I spend watchin' entirely from under a table 'cause I was
so young I couldn't yet distinguish the mayhem in front of the
stage from either a large fight or a frantic pogo), to their last ever
show, prior to which I spend 2 hours in some club owners office
listenin' to singer Tim Mullens tryin' to explain his personal demons
(of which he had a LOT). ALL the discs are recommended IMHO,
but then again; I'm biased, and some suffer from that typical 80s
drumsound. Tho' you might do just fine tryin' to find the 'All On The
Beat' LP or the 'Garage Land' EP (AKA 'Hamburger Heaven') esp
since you dug 'The Quest' so much. And yes, you're right with the
Saints comparison, 'Eternally Yours' was one of Tim's all-timers,
plus he had some vague notions of crossbreeding Wilson Pickett
with the Ramones.

OK, here's what they did;

=Ivy Green (LP, 4-'78. reissued on CD in the late 80's and recently
reprod by the bootleggers.)
=Wap Shoo Wap AKA I'm Sure We're Gonna Make It (one sided
7", 4-'78
=Pak 'em Beet (On 'Uitholling Overdwars' comp LP. '79)
=Dreaming Of You/World Of Light (7", 1-'84)
=Garageland EP (7", 8-'84)
=The Quest (LP, 10-'84)
=Turning Point (Split 7" with Trockenerkecks, 3-'85)
=All On The Beat (LP, 10-'85)
=Whatever They Hype (2LP, includes entire 1st LP plus a
compilation of 7" tracks, '3-86)
=Good Thing Happen/No Love Is Kind (7", 4-86)
=Moon Raised (LP, '87)
=Real Slow Burn (CD, '90)
=Into The Deep/Come On Down (7", '90)

There's a couple more compilation appearances but non of these
feature exclusive tracks.

Hope this helps,

Jeroen

Yes, it's much better than the version by Who on the CD version of Odds and
Sods! Too much "Obscure Rockin' Pie" has been eaten once again in
Bompland. Your homework for tonight is to go home and listen to the
version which _every_ other damn Mod band in London took their version from
[Recorded as a demo by the Who in late '64]. I have the version by The
Clique - A.K.A. the men who dared to call Jesse Hector a friend - and it is
GREAT but lacks Keith Moon _swinging_ the beat.

O yes it is/was - well at least in the country where the film was
made. One of my greatest Bompland regrets is passing on a three quid copy
in a reduced bin in Rochdale several years ago. Such foolishness.

i agree - my fave version of this song has got to be the fontana demo
version, the one on the box set. the drumming on that is absolutely amazing...

PS steve - if you come across any more of those bargain videos of "gonks go

The Wailers do a version that's an absolute KILLER--easily one of the best
tracks they ever did.

As a guess, I would think that Columbia Records would be a beast to deal with to get the licensing for the
"Time" and "This must be the place" discs. This could create problems in getting Legit releases that Sundazed does so very well.

Subject: Phantom Tim Buckley 45? Need info.....

Hi, and apologies to those who are seeing this on multiple lists. Apologies
also to those who don't cotton to no Tim Buckley talk.

In several record collectors' guides, over the years, I have seen reference
to an American 45 by Tim Buckley: "Once Upon A Time" b/w "Lady." They even
list a catalog number, Elektra # 45618. However I have never seen one
offered for sale, reviewed, or otherwise commented-on.

What IS this?? Has anyone ever seen it? Heard it? Is it some sort of
phantom never-released thingy? Or, as I suspect, is it a misprint of some
sort.....and an actual Elektra 45 not by Buckley at all, but by Crabby
Appleton or some such?

If it exists I must have it. If it does NOT exist I STILL must have it.

Thanks all
Mike F.

Crypt Records DOES have a website, and the URL IS
www.cryptrecords.de, BUT from what I understand, it
has been abandoned...left for dead...ditched. If you
want the latest ordering info, you have to get the
printed catalog.

<Quad is interesting, because the went back to the original elements of
Townshend's demos, which are the basis for the album, and remixed it using
the 1st generation material. Sounds good to my ears. But then are Who Are
You they used some alternate solos so it no longer accurately reflects the
original album. Sounds good though, and the bonus stuff is very interesting.
..

The other strange thing is, having just picked up the remaster, that thew
running times on each Cd is slightly shorter than the mid-80s Cd issue.

Not sure which Rationals version I have on a volume of the Mindrocker comp
series, but I definitely concur that it's a brilliant cover of "Leavin'
Here" (complete with great "whoa yeah" backing vocals). Love that one and
the Birds' version. And I seem to recall a fine live rendition by Girl
Trouble as well. Did the Headless Horsemen also cover it?

Michele,

I've got around 12 or 13 volumes of this series (not sure if that's all
there were). It's not bad and contains some good obscure garage stuff with
cool cartoon covers. But the sound quality is only fair and not even close
to that of the Teenage Shutdown series by comparison. I think I dig the
"Go Go" and "Backyard Patio" volumes the best. The later volumes featured
more psych or off-beat garage and not quite as strong as the early ones.

Yeah, it's a real screamer called "Mynah Bird Stomp"!! It brought chills!!
And I am pretty sure that the cut that I have is a Neil Young and The
Squires tune, what with it being circa '64, not '66. I am going to post the
mp3 soon and I'll let everyone know where it can be grabbed.

Hi:
I responded to the earlier Tropics posting, but don't
know if you saw it. As far as licensing goes, you are
most probably right, not that Columbia ever did
anything for the Tropics. On the bright side, I have
a cd made by Randy Turnbull which has twelve tunes by
the Tropics, including Time, For a Long Time, Black
Jacket Woman, and, I guess, almost everything they
recorded. I'll be happy to copy it on cassette if you
like, if you have a tape of "This Must be the Place"
to trade. Randy can be contacted at
rfproductions@tampabay.com. He has an 8 volume
Florida garage set that is almost all killer..except
for the stuff by White Witch (Tropics Phase II) and a
band called Boot.
