a LIVE "Mystery Science Theater"-style commentary by the most prolific Bomp

The Secret Cinema presents:
NUGGETS: CELLULOID ARTYFACTS OF SIXTIES ROCK

Moore College of Art and Design
20th & Race Streets, Philadelphia
(215) 568-4515, ext. 4099

Friday, January 26
8:00 pm

On Friday, January 26, The Secret Cinema at Moore College of Art and Design
will present NUGGETS: CELLULOID ARTYFACTS OF SIXTIES ROCK. This unique
hodgepodge of ultra-rare reels consists of various short films and
television shows -- almost all never shown before by the Secret Cinema (or
anyone else, since they were made) -- showcasing mod, garage and pop music
from the mid-to-late 1960s. To make it even more of a once-in-a-lifetime
event, we'll have Stewkey (lead singer and keyboardist of Philadelphia's
greatest '60s band The Nazz) on hand to present and discuss a rare print of
the promo film for "Open My Eyes."

As ALWAYS, all Secret Cinema presentations are projected in 16mm film on a
giant screen (that's right, no video).

There will be one complete show at 8:00 pm. Admission is $6.00.

A few highlights of NUGGETS include:

GIRLS IN SHORT SHORT DRESSES (1966) - Paramount made this topical film in
the final days of the theatrical short subject era, to capitalize on the
worldwide interest in then very-Swinging London. Incredibly, it stars
actual mod band The Thoughts, who are best known to collectors for their
recording of Ray Davies' otherwise unreleased song "All Night Stand," on
Shel Talmy's Planet Records label. In this previously unknown Technicolor
film, they perform two songs in the famous Blaise's nightclub, and in a
reverse on the usual rock band scenario, THEY chase GIRLS around tube
stations and Carnaby Street boutiques. The film also makes a visit to the
studio of fashion designer Mary Quant, inventor of the mini skirt.

THE ECSTASY IS SOMETIMES FANTASTIC (1966) - Made by the Canadian
Broadcasting Corporation, this is a rare cinema verite look at a working,
not-quite-made-it rock group. Toronto garage band Jon and Lee and the
Checkmates reveal all sides of their world, from belting out James Brown
numbers in packed clubs, to going over itineraries and accounting, to the
crucial business of getting the right haircut.

THE NAZZ: OPEN MY EYES (1967) - Rock videos weren't invented in the '80s;
they've been around since sound film was perfected. In the '60s they were
called "promo films," and this was one of the better ones. Stewkey, the
lead singer and keyboardist of Philly's greatest mod band, will introduce
this first ever public screening of his personal print (which is actually a
rare alternate edit of the clip MTV has shown!), and talk about what it was
like to make a rock promo film.

Hey music lovers!

London guitar-organ garage groovers (oh yes) The Dilemmas have finally
released a new single. Wow!

Yes, The Dilemmas In Color EP is out NOW on old-fashioned all-analog vinyl.
It's a limited edition red vinyl EP with a great big hole in the middle.
We've included the three songs we recorded a while ago at London's Toe Rag
studio: titles are Play For Today / All Inside Now / Lovers Day.
There's also a spiffy pop-art-ish cover. And no, it's not available on CD.

Bemuse the staff at your local hip record emporium by asking for some
Dilemmas by name: "Do you have any Dilemmas? I'd like their In Color EP."
Or tell them "Butterfly Records BUT-04, distributed by Clear Spot (Europe)
and Get Hip (USA)." It's also available by mail order from ourselves. EMail
me off-list if you'd like a copy.

Meanwhile, keep on groovin!

I only get the digest, so forgive me if 100 people have already responded to this. Andy Ellison was the singer in Radio Stars, and the "leader" seems to have been Martin Gordon, who was in Sparks back in the "Kimono/Propaganda" days. The two of them wrote most of the songs. No records released in the USA. They were on Chiswick in the UK. Two LPs (at least) and several singles, a few of which made substantial chart showings. It was slightly punky pop with a sensibility that veered fairly close to Neil Innes/ Rutles material at times.

I'm at work now and I can't look up anything else......if no one else fleshes this out by the end of the day I'll write again when I get home.

Wish I could be there to see this. I did an interview
with Ray Dennis Steckler ("Rat Pfink A Boo Boo," "The
Thrill Killers," "The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who
Stopped Living And Became Mixed-Up Zombies") and he
told me he directed the "Open My Eyes" promo film.

Subject: Speaking of CSN......

The other day, I picked up a DVD put out by MPI
containing 4 episodes (and 21 bonus scenes) of the
very-short-lived ABC series "Music Scene."
Apparently, this show ran five months during the
1969-70 season and was the last time a rock-oriented
show was tried in prime time. (Late night would be
the next refuge, as witnessed by "The Midnight
Special," "Don Kirshner's Rock Concert," etc.)This
according to a recently-published book on rock 'n'
roll on TV called "Station To Station," which is a
pretty good read.

Anyway, this is another show that featured
performances from some of the top stars of the day.
(These were picked according to the week in Billboard
on the pop, soul and country charts.) One of those is
Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young who do Young's "Down by
the River" and I'll be damned if it don't smoke. I
believe the show's director, Stan Harris, told the
author of the book mentioned above that he thought he
had the best CSNY captured and IMHO, he ain't too far
from wrong.

Of course, like MPI's "Hullabaloo" DVD (which I also
have), there's a lot of dreck from people like Bobby
Sherman, Paul Anka, Oliver, Gary Puckett and the like.
Plus the comedy segments (from six different hosts
including David Steinberg and Lily Tomlin) are, for
the most part, lame. But there's still a lot worth
seeing. There are performances on view from Janis
Joplin, The Dells, Smith, Ten Years After, Sly and the
Family Stone, The Temptations, The Rascals, BB King,
Spirit, James Brown, Ten Years After, Issac Hayes,
Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Merle Haggard, Buck
Owens and others. So, if you have a DVD player, the
disc is worth getting to see the good stuff.

P.S. There's also some promo clips for the show
featuring The Rolling Stones. (Too bad there's no
performance footage.) And a clip from the "Archies"
cartoon show to promote "Sugar, Sugar." The disc
concludes with one of the strangest clips I've ever
seen, of The Everly Brothers attempting to go through
a hippie phase and attempting heavy rock. It's either
pathetic or fascinating depending on your point of
view, but at least Don and Phil look like they're
having a good time.

Wow! I have the 45 of their version of "Remember

That name's very familiar... isn't he on the first Neanderthals record? Like
Mike, I'm at work now and can't just check the album but I think he is.

Unfortunately, the Dirty Water Club is fully booked up and I can't give

I have a single on A-Squiared on which they have a song called "I Need You"
but it's not the Kinks' song. So does this mean they did two songs with the
same title...just to confuse me? -- PJ

The member of John's Children who was in Radio Stars is Andy Ellison, the
singer. Boz Boorer's first group was in the very late 70s, The Polecats,
who had a couple of records in the charts here in the UK in around 1981 or
so. I saw John's Children three weeks ago here in London which featured
Andy and Boz and original John's Children drummer Chris Townson. The
guitarist? No idea who he is but he's definitely not the original John's
Children guitarist. For a good article on John's Children there's a PDF at

Fie on all of you who said his career was over when he
split from the Neckbreakers!

========================================
The Beatles Remain Un-Shaggable

The Beatles showed once again that getting shagged is
not on their agenda.

The Fab Four's first single-CD greatest-hits album,
aptly titled 1, held the number-one spot on the pop
album sales charts for a sixth consecutive week
despite a growing threat from red-hot reggae-popster
Shaggy. The Beatles sold more than 260,000 copies of 1
for the week ended January 14, according to SoundScan.
Shaggy's Hotshot--which trailed 1 by more than 100,000
copies on last week's chart--is steadily closing the
sales gap, moving an impressive 191,000 copies.

Shaggy has made an incredible comeback with his new
hit song, "Wasn't Me," which was also number two on
the singles chart for the week. Shaggy has since been
tapped to perform "Wasn't Me" on NBC's Saturday Night
Live February 24.

That day I' ll leave in order to spend a few days in Dublin, so a stop in London can be easily scheduled (I just have to convince my travel-mate!). I' m going to book the flights next week so I was wandering if you could possibly confirm that the gig would take place exactly that evening.
If the guys at the club will change their mind and decide to sell tickets in advance do you think you could possibly buy them for me? In that case I would send you the cash by mail....
Last year I lost my only opportunity to see the Headcoats playing in Italy, so I REALLY would like to be present!
Thanks in advance

I believe The Band did a version of this that charted
in 1972 under the title "Don't Do It."

Yes, they had a big regional hit with the Goffin/King ballad "I Need You,"
on Capitol (post-Cameo) and I think the Kinks cover was released after
that. The Kinks "I Need You" was on A-Square as a split single with The
Scot Richard Case's (listed as "The old exciting Scot Richard Case"! - the
owner of A-Square and the S.R.C. manager had acrimoniously parted ways
sometime earlier) killer cut of "Get The Picture." The Fan Club lp version
has an added "slate" at the start ("'I Need You' Take Four"), other than
that it sounds about the same to me. (If anybody needs this A-Square 45,
I have an extra copy for trade...)

Perhaps I'm biased, as well (is there anyone who is not?). Even if this
is one of the reasons that I liked "The Quest", I still think that a lot
of you will share my opinion when you hear some of the songs on it. My
favorite ones so far are "Cool Aid" (seems to fit well thematically with
"Hamburger Heaven"!), "Ain't no sunshine", and "Searching".

There's a very good self-titled anthology of her material from the 60s on
BMG/VOGUE(#74321261622). It's a double disc that I've seen pretty widely
available. There are a LOT of anthologies out there, so I picked the one
which I felt best represents her work in the 60s. If you find you like some
of the material over the rest, you can see which album it's from at the FH
online discography:
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/geroki/
I for one like her more heavily produced songs from the mid to late 60s,
though I know quite a few folks prefer her early british beat influenced
material. Though I find earlier 'yeh-yeh' stuff charming, I think her
ability as a songwriter really began to flower with her 3rd lp (entitled FH2
aka "Je Veux Qu'il Revienne") It's really amazing the level of maturity her
material acheived between this and her previous release (her 2nd lp entitled
FH1 aka "Le premier bonheur du jour" I think) I haven't gone very far into
her 70s stuff, so maybe someone else can help you there.
Anyway maybe some wouldn't agree, but hopefully this is some help to you.
Though most of her original lps have been released on cd, most online stores
only carry the anthologies. I have found a good selection of the original
lps on cd at OtherMusic.com.
