I heard that Garage Shock will be held in Austin this year at the end of
May which suits me fine as its a lot easier for me to get there than if
it was in Bellingham. Can anyone here confirm this and give a web site
address? I tried garageshock.com and came up empty. Thanks, Rick.

Midheaven is Revolver Distro's mail order arm. Revolver is Crypt's old
distributor. They are now handled by Mordam.

Hi Nancy,
         The Invaders track "You really tear me up" is indeed on Sixties
Rebellion, on volume 5 : The cave

My scoop on the SR series, since they are rarely discussed:
    I've got 10 out of the first dozen volumes on vinyl, for relatively
cheap, and i'm glad i did cause
    they are pretty good. The sound is ok. I read some reviews and some
people were not very happy about them
    back then, but the series hold true to what "music maniac" main guy
Hans Kasteloo had declared back then: that the
    comps will contain only previously uncomped tracks. A indicator of the
"relative success" of the series is that
    at least 1-2 tracks off every early volume were later included on TS.
Many tracks off vol.11 turned up on psych
    comps. All volumes were garage, except vol.11 which contains garagey
psych and vol. 12 which was modelled
    on pebbles vol.3 with many goofy, anti-protest garage folk, weird psych
and "oh no! they're going to take me away"
    style fun songs!
    A few volumes were compiled by moptop mike. Rudi Protrudi did the cool
artwork.
    There are 20 volumes announced, with titles in the back cover but I
think that vols 16 -20 never came out
    Overall, SR are pretty good, vol.3:"the auditorium" is my favorite

Cheers,
            George

Hi Kip,
            I've seen a vinyl boot of the FELT LP, and a cd too, here and
there in the past.
    But don't worry about them anymore because Akarma reissued the LP in a
quality edition (180 gr vinyl) in the
    past November. I've seen copies in several local stores and i'll get one
myself some time soon. I guess it came
    out on cd too.
    Hope this helps,

Subject: Garage rockin' in the Netherlands

Last week I spent a short four days in the Netherlands... I was at a travel
show in Utrecht. Naturally, I went to seek out people and places of good
taste. I was fortunate enough to stumble into Da Capo Records, easily one of
THE best record stores in Europe. I had run into Michel Terstegen, the
owner, in Vegas at the Grind, but had no idea he owned a record store until
I walked in and saw him behind the counter. Superb selection, but even with
the strong dollar those high European prices kept me from splurging too
much. Got the wild "Turkish Delights" comp (by the same fellow who put out
the Biet Het comps) and some assorted Nederbiet and an original French
Canadian comp with Les Hou-Lops, Les Coquettes and Le 25ieme Regiment.

I soon learned that he was singing with none other than Ronnie Splinter of
the Outsiders that same night at a small bar in Amsterdam, the Winston
(which is also a youth hostel). What luck! Ronnie and the Splinters were
really good; Michel is an excellent singer and Ronnie is a damned good
guitarist. I also spotted old Marcel Krupp on drums, who used to be in the
Kliek, whom I caught a few times in Germany when I lived there. They
finished it up with an incredible version of Mr. Soul.

The night before I left caught up with our own Jeroen "I'm not Eddie!"
Vedder at Plato Records! He was kind enough to put in my hand a Plato
sampler that he had a had in putting together called "The Birth of Modern
Pop." Probably compares to one of Tony the Tiger's Hipster comps - a healthy
dose of freakbeat, early black r & r, groove and soul.

Hey guys, thanks a lot for having me! Mijn besoek was uitstekend!

I had to come back Friday, and had a long layover at JFK, so I took the
subway to the hip area of Bedford Ave. in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. I heard
the Fleshtones lived in the vicinity, but unfortunately I didn't spot any of
the Living Legends making the scene. I dropped in to Drag Strip Music on
Bedford and toyed around with a red Farfisa compact in serious need of
repair. I stuffed a falafel down my throat, I took the train back to JFK.
The route passes a vast graveyard, which appears rather creepy when
completely covered with snow.

What a great week. And I was getting paid!

Definately worth it to grab the 2 Retroactive Creation CD's. Nice sound and
packaging ( tho' The Smoke CD's artwork is truly amazing ) kool liner notes
etc.
I'll agree with Lee, the track sequencing is schitzoid, but they're both
worth picking
up and enjoying.

    yeah, i forgot about that one! does one of the retroactive discs have
this? i have it on the old eva "mark four/creation" disc...& that's actually
my favorite creation album...
    i have been thinking for quite a while now of picking up the 2
retroactive discs. how's the sound on those? i have the edsel "how does it
feel" disc - is the sound noticeably imporved over that one?
    i have been really impressed with the releases i have so far picked up
from retroactive, the easybeats "gonna have a good time," and the smoke "my
friend jack." good notes, great sound & the packaging, especially on the
smoke disc, is great!! that one is definitely to coolest looking disc i've
seen in a long time, w/ the rubbley phil smee artwork. very cool,

Who knows anything about The Movies (label, output, where from)? I believe
I've heard talk of them on here, but I don't quite remember. Anyway Bill
Kelly played a great number called "Come On" on his WFMU show recently.

Hi y'all,

Guess I forgot all about you yesterday! We're having frantic times in the
office: our floor is in the middle of a merger-related move to another
location. Hard to get anything done at all.

Anyway here's Yesterday & Today & Tomorrow in the last century, no extra
charge!

On January 18, in

1950, Charles Brown recorded "Don't fool with my heart" and "I've got that
old feeling" at Los Angeles' Radio Recorders;
1955, the Cardinals recorded "The door is still open", in New York;
1955, Jimmy Reed recorded "You upset my mind", in Chicago;
1958, Jerry Lee Lewis recorded "Breathless", "Cool, cool ways (sexy ways)",
"Down the line", "I'm sorry I'm not sorry" and "Milkshake mademoiselle" at
Memphis' Sun Studios, during a three-day session, which started on January
16;
1965, the Rolling Stones recorded "Play with fire" at Los Angeles' RCA
Studios. Also recorded was "The last time", although the vocals were
re-recorded on February 17, also at RCA L.A.;
1966, the Beach Boys recorded "Let's go away for awhile" at Los Angeles'
Western Studios;
1967, Paul Revere & the Raiders recorded "Ups and downs" at Los Angeles'
Columbia Studios;
1970, the Doors played their second night (two shows a night) at New York's
Felt Forum. Reportedly all four shows went very well. I have their early
show from the 18th on a bootleg and that one is very good...
1972, David Bowie recorded a BBC session, playing "Five years", "Hang on to
yourself", "I'm waiting for the man", "Queen Bitch" and "Ziggy Stardust";
1972, James Brown recorded "King Heroin" at New York's A&R Studios;
1972, the Guess Who recorded "Guns, guns, guns", also at New York's A&R
Studios;
1974, Hound Dog Taylor played a gig at Northwestern University in Evanston,
Ill. See digest 649 for more details;
1978, Wire recorded a BBC Peel session, playing "Culture vultures", "I am
the fly", "106 beats that" and "Practice makes perfect";
1984, Echo & the Bunnymen played a gig at Tokyo's Sun Plaza Hall. Somehow I
got hold of a tape of this gig...

On January 19, in

1945, Louis Jordan & his Tympani Five recorded "Caldonia", in New York;
1954, Billy Love recorded "Gee I wish" and "The news is all around town" at
Memphis' Sun Studios;
1957, Elvis Presley recorded "Blueberry Hill", "Have I told you lately that
I love you", "Is it so strange" and "It is no secret (what God can do)" at
Los Angeles' Radio Recorders;
1968, Joe Tex recorded "Men are gettin' scarce", in Nashville;
1970, Yes recorded a BBC session, playing "Sweet dreams" and "Then", both
Yes originals;
1971, the Byrds recorded "I wanna grow up to be a politician" at Los
Angeles' Columbia Studios.

On January 20, in

1952, Big Joe Turner recorded "Sweet sixteen", in New York;
1954, Big Maybelle Smith recorded "I've got a feeling", "My big mistake",
"No more trouble out of me" and "You'll never know" at New York's Okeh
Studios;
1965, the Byrds recorded "Mr Tambourine man" at Los Angeles' Columbia
Studios;
1965, Otis Redding recorded "For your precious love", "Home in your heart",
"Keep your arms around me", and "Woman, a lover, a friend" at Memphis' Stax
Studios;
1967, Arthur Conley recorded "Sweet soul music" at Sheffield's Muscle
Shoals Studios;
1967, Pink Floyd played a gig at London's UFO Club. Two of the songs they
played that night, "Interstellar overdrive" and "Mathilda mother" ended up
on the "Steel breeze" bootleg;
1975, the Shaggs recorded the songs for their second album "Shaggs own
thing" at Fleetwood Studios in Revere MA;
1977, Rory Gallagher played a gig at London's Hippodrome, which was
recorded and broadcast by BBC radio. Three of the songs played that night
ended up on 1999's "BBC sessions": "Calling card", "I take what I want" and
"Jacknife beat";
1983, the Sound played a gig in my hometown Utrecht, at Tivoli. I think it
was at this gig the late Adrian Borland at one time muttered towards the
crowd that he was 'so fuckin' ill, y'know', sniffin' like a walrus, turning
back to the band and blasting off into the next song... It was a blistering
performance...

That's it for this week, have yourselves a great weekend!

L8er,
Jan (listening to Van Halen's debut, kinda triggered by Gary thru' the
AJ-list...... REALLY!!!)

hey groovers

Well last night I had my ear pressed up against a tranny (!) and I think the
station was XFM 104.9 (London's sort-of indie/alt/underground station) and
playing there was a cool punky tune by a band who were announced as "The
Strokes, from New York". Does anyone have any info on this band? Hip me to
them! I need this  record.

thanks y'all
