Hey Tom and everybody! The Moviees are one of my faves. They are on Living
Eye/Sundazed. The Moviees are managed and produced by Andy Babiuk and Greg
Prevost of The Chesterfield Kings. The grr-8 production on the CD,BECOME ONE
OF THEM speaks well of Andy's and Greg's talents in the studio. The single is
"Come On"(not the Chocolate Watch Band one)b/w "You Got What I Want". The
Moviees sound like a mixture of Kinks and The Who,some Texas garage, and some
Byrds-like jangle-a truly intoxicating elixir. The Moviees sound translates
well live as proven at CAVESTOMP 2000. They were by far my fave of the new
garagesters.
I'm glad WFMU is playing 'em. Dinos and Joe Viglione have
also played The Moviees on their radio shows. Here's wishing The Moviees much
success in 2001. I don't know what if they are single and/or available, but
they are very personable and attractive. The first thing Dawn Eden said to me
when they stepped onstage "Nancy, you are right, garage guys are cute!"-- Nancy

Oh boy, Evan! You ever been to a punk rock show? If you've never see The
Parkinsons then you're a liar! The gig I went to at a place called The
Verge in Kentish Town last was fuckin' mad! Got this demo tape in the post
and figured, well it's okay but I reckon they might be better live...
Jesus, were they?! The Parkinsons (named after the disease, not Britain's
king of the TV chat show), four young Portuegese guys living in London,
came on looking like a mix between 1967 and 1976. Before they'd started the
first song the guitarist was taking a piss from the front of the stage, the
bassist did something (I don't know what) that outraged one audience member
so much that he had a pint of beer thrown over him, by the end of the first
song the vocalist was down to wearing just his chelsea boots and underpants
(and the underpants were being worn on his head!) Before the end of their
set the bar staff had all walked out - maybe it was the masturbation that
did it for them? - leaving the headline band to play to an empty room to
get their money, cos the audience all decamped for a nearby bar to carry on
drinking. Gonna get these guys to play for me at the Dirty Water Club.
April 13th and seeing as it's Friday the 13th why not put them on alongside
The Cannibals. Fuck it! Our mics and mic stands have been through hell and
back already so a bit more abuse by the Parkinsons might put 'em out of
their misery. -- PJ

Rick,

Try www.estrus.com. Garage Shock is in Austin this year, from
May 25th-27th, down at Emo's. Perfect time for me to go home and see my
parents, eh? Depends on the bands that show up. Currently,
nothing has been said to that effect.

There is a Francoise CD called "The Collection" that is a great introduction
to her work. I tend to favor the material she did in the mid and late
sixties over the earliest, but this is a good 60's spanning comp.

I don't think the '72 single charted. In fact, I think it may even have been a B-side. However, the song does lead off their "Rock Of Ages" live LP from that year. And yeah, they had been performing that song since even before the Dylan days, back in Toronto. The band that Levon plays with nowadays, the Crowmatics, still does the song.

Has anyone else heard the Soulbenders reissue? I'm wondering what other people
think... I think the Soulbenders stuff is pretty great. They recorded at the
"Fenton" studios (Great Lakes in Sparta and Midwestern in Grand Rapids) but
released the stuff on their own label.

The version of "House of the Rising Sun" on the bonus disc doesn't sound very
good. Does anybody have the original album that this was on (from the 1967
National Battle of the Bands), and how does it sound on that?

The show is definitely booked. Billy's confirmed it with me.

Sorry, but there will definitely not be any tickets in advance because I've
got far too much work to do already (earning a living, getting the next
issue of Shindig! ready, booking up dates at the club for the rest of the
year, DJing at other venues - and trying to have a bit of a social life
somehow!). However, if you're travelling some distance then I'll organise
something to make sure you're okay. (This applies only to Bomp listers!)

Billy wants the Guaranteed Ugly as support but I think I've persuaded him
that it might be good to have the Wildebeests. Better idea? You might get
Armitage Shanks as second support band too.

The above message was sent to me (via dirtywaterclub@yahoo.com) because
they were looking to play in London while down from Scotland to record at

Supposedly, he wrote several songs for her that were recorded, but never
released. That's one version, I've also heard that the project never got

soundwise they're great, but they really should have left out all the
clutter and made this one single-disc comp. it's no coincidence i'm sure
that they put "makin' time" on one disc and "biff bang pow" on the other
one. i'd track down the edsel comp "our music is red w/ purple flashes"
instead -- much stronger.

Haven't caught them live, but as Chris mentioned they did a Wednesday night

I noticed reference to Ganim's Asia Minors in the archives. If anyone's
interested, a single was released in 1958 (yes! that long ago) on the
East-West record label (New York) titled "Daddy Lolo". This was a rock and
roll song, (typical lyric - "Daddy Lolo, Daddy Lolo, this is oriental rock
and rollo") but played by what sounded like a Turkish band. Composition is
credited on label to someone called Ganimanian. Flip side is "Halvah" once
again a Turkish influenced track. I know its useless information, but I
thought I was the only person in the world with this record!! Any one else
still have it?

Subject: Francoise Hardy

Funny, I was just watching the other day a tv documentary on her that I had
taped a few months back, and there's a recent interview with a very shy but
stil cut and dry Jacques Dutronc, where he claims between a few cigar puffs
that he never could stand her songs because he thought they were too
depressing! He said the only reason he agreed to write a few songs for her
was so that he could get closer to her!

It was unbelievable hearing the paradox between the two. The documentary 1st
shows a recent interview with Francoise, as she proudly claims how she loved
Dutronc and how they were both too shy during the 1st year to even admit to
one another how they liked each other. Then Dutronc is interviewed saying
how she was just "in the list" of babes he and his buddies wanted to
"score"! It was incredible to watch Dutronc beeing so blunt and macho about
this! Of course, he was pushing it for the entertainement value, since he
had a huge grin on his face!

Another thing the documentary had: rare clips from the 60's of Dutronc and
Hardy in studio recording some great, never before released tracks. Also
some shots of them singing Cleo's "Et Moi, Et Toi, Et Soie", (Ultra Chicks
vol 1, I think) but with different lyrics. It's some sort of tv promo clip,
but it's not from the Francoise Hardy special from 1967! I had never heard
this song before and I'm still wondering where the hell it was taken from!!

My favorite Hardy song is Gainsbourg's "Comment te dire adieu". Not a worthy
comp if you don't have that one! Another great one is "Je n'attends plus
personne".

months ago. It's also on one of the volumes of the Exploiting Plastic
Inevitable compilation.

Yep, that's him. He's the one who had the big hit
with it in 1962 anyway.

been a B-side. However, the song does lead off their "Rock Of Ages" live LP
from that year. And yeah, they had been performing that song since even
before the Dylan days, back in Toronto. The band that Levon plays with
nowadays, the Crowmatics, still does the song.

It did chart, a live version, it got to #34. The b-side was a live version
of Rag Mama Rag.

To the best of my knowledge -- and I believe it's rather definite at this
point -- Garage Shock will be at Emo's in Austin, TX in May (they club
announced it during a show). You can try http://www.emosaustin.com to see
if you can dig anything up.

I heard that Garage Shock will be held in Austin this year at the end of
May which suits me fine as its a lot easier for me to get there than if
it was in Bellingham. Can anyone here confirm this and give a web site
address? I tried garageshock.com and came up empty. Thanks, Rick.
