Some of the bands that will be playing Garageshock this year in
Austin are Monkeywrench, Sugar Shack, Mooney Suzuki, Soledad

the Fallouts. There will be advance tickets though I don't know when.
Last time I checked the Estrus website there weren't any specifics
beyond time (May 25-27) and place (Emo's in Austin). Hope some of

these are not european high prices - these are dutch high prices. Da Capo is
great shop and i used to buy lot of records there, but the prices are
getting higher and higher, and that's with almost all shops here in holland.
if you just go 100km accross the broder to germany you can find the same
records 5 US$, or even more cheaper. i really don't understand why they have
such high prices here. i go to Cologne and pay room in hotel for 2 nights,
buy some records and i spend the same money i would spend here only buying
records.
people in record shops here put high prices on records just because they
know they will sell them - specially 60s reissues. there is only 1 shop with
normal prices in amsterdam, but they don't have such big choice of 60s
reissues.
the best example is Turkish Delights LP. in Da Capo this lp costs 16 US$ and
in germany it's 11 US$. Turkish Delights lp is released in holland and guy
who did it knows Michel personally and brings it to him to shop. i just
don't understand how they have it in germany for lower price??!!!!??

This one is definitely Bompworthy. The Missings Links were described thus "If
The Easybeats are The Beatles and The Who,The Missing Links are the Rolling
Stones." Peter of Australia countered "The Missing Links are the Pretty
Things and Q65 of Oz!"
With such high praise,I was eager to get this thing.
The Missing Links exceeded my highest expectations. This CD on Half A Cow
Records has 28 tracks and a very groovy 40 page booklet crammed with pix .
The hard thing is getting past the first song , "Wild About You",their second
single. This song KILLS! The music is so raw and primitive and Andy James'
vocal is pure savagery. And those lyrics, they're classic:"You look so good I
could eatcha/But I wouldn't kiss a steak/So I won't eat you!"
                                                                The
Chesterfield Kings do a cool version of this on their video THE GOOD,THE
BAD,AND THE UGLY Volume 2. The Saints also did this on their first
album.Though the song is creditted to "unknown",singer/madman,Andy James
penned this slice of dementia. Other faves of mine are the first single
"You're Drivin' Me Insane" and two versions of "All I Want" which are both
cool in their own way,but the crashing tambourine and mad vocal(s)push the
balance in favor of the, previously unreleased, 1st lineup's version.
                                                                        If
you can't find this in your favorite record emporium,go to
www.halfacow.com.au It's not surprising that wildman,Andy James had a brain
hemorrage during a gig. This one will make your head explode!!!--Nancy Neon

I agree, Jake...the Soulbenders material is all pretty good garage stuff.
There's not enough of it, however. The Phelegetron cuts are mostly all
lengthy instrumentals....and FAR from garage. I'd recommend the package,
however, for the Soulbenders cuts, and the very informative and well written
booklet, which I thourougly enjoyed.

Subject: ravin about the rationals.

ok, i borrowed a CD off a friend this weekend, the flash boot CD of the
rationals crewe LP & various assorted single tracks & rarities...i just had
to rave about how fucking GREAT this stuff is!!! wow. i have been blasting
the stereo all afternoon to this CD, man this is really, really great stuff!!
total high-energy mod-beat ravers...that's the singles, not the sorta
hippy-rock LP (which i also really liked) - wow, those singles. only in
detroit in the 60s could a jingle for a men's clothing store ROCK like that,
the song "turn on." "feelin lost" reminds me a little of help-era beatles,
with that great firecracker "cant explain" style drumming. "sing" is just
amazing, all of these songs have incredible powefully soulful singing from
scott morgan, very similar to steve marriott & the backup harmonies are also
really excellent, great harmonies, firecracker drumming, and amazing crunchy
guitar. i am just blown away by this band!
all i really knew of them before was "i need you" on the nuggets box,
which i thought was OK, but then i started getting stuff off napster, like
"leavin here" and "feelin lost" & "little girls cry." it's a shame that the
early stuff is licensed to cameo-parkway & doesn't really have a fair chance
of being heard. i'm not often given to slinging around hyperbole like this,
but these guys were just amazing, and without doubt one of the very best
american bands from the 60s i've ever heard. if you dig the high-energy
detroit stuff, early who, small faces & 65-ish beatles, you gotta hear this
stuff!! it's just great .
what does everybody think of the crewe LP? i dug it, in its own way, as
much as i did the singles. lotsa acoustic guitar, more great singing & those
harmonies...definitely in the hippy-rock vein, but no stupid flower-power
stuff...maybe if the small faces had survived intact into the early 70s (with
marriott, i mean) they might have sounded something like this....kinda
acoutic, pastoral but still soulful and ballsy. what the concensus on the
LP?? i liked it, i'm curious if everyone else does.
    these guys were fantastic!!
sorry, had to rave. i feel better now.

If you're willing to go into the 70s, there's Magneto and The Titanium Man
by Wings. (The only super-villain song I can think of off the top of my
head. Side note: Magneto is the only Jewish supervillain I can think of off
the top of my head.)

Captain Marvel is mentioned in The Beatles' "Continuing Story of Bungalow
Bill."

The Ramones do a version of the "Spiderman" cartoon theme.
I think it was a hidden track on some copies of "Acid Eaters".

And there is also the cryptically titled "Niat Pac Lavram" ("Captain
Marval"?) by the Chevrons 5, if I remember correctly the name of the band,
in one of the volumes of the Teenage Shutdown series (is it on "Move
It!"?). Plus, the original version of "Nobody Loves the Hulk" by the

Rob,

There's a fab soul shaker called "Do The Batman" on the Pow City soul comp.
Also, the "Riot on Sunset Strip/Rarities" CD by the STandells has a
version of the Batman theme. And I think one of those cartoon-oriented
trib comps has the Ramones version of the Spiderman theme on it.

I totally dig that "...Hulk" tune. I've got the original on one of those
"Relics" comps, but can't recall who did it.

Rocky.

Subject: The Malarians

So, it's a Saturday night and the mister's playing out of town and there are
no good shows in Atlanta tonight, so the evening has degenerated into what
all good icky-weather nothing to do weekends degenerate into - drinking beer
and listening to records. And that has spawned yet another attempt at
making a new workout tape, so I was pulling out some of my moldy oldies, and
THAT brings me to something that's been bugging me for about 14 years now.
So, back in the S.F. days, I picked up 2 records by a band called the
Malarians. Umm, this woulda been '87-'88 or so and one of the records (an ep
to be exact, I think) has this KILLER instrumental called "Hexon Blood Beat"
that I love (love love). Which brings me to my question:

Who the hell were (I'm assuming that's a past tense) these guys??

I got as far as learning they were a Boston band, and there's some early
Bomp-era Dwarves connection, but beyond that I know nada. With all the
Boston folks on this list, I figure someone knows more than I do. Are these
guys still playing in any capacity? Were they any good live? Just curious.

Back to taping....

We goofed the first time. Let's try again.

Here's a few more off the top of my head:

Batman Theme - The Marketts

Spiderman - The Unbelievable Uglies

Batman Rides Again - The Invisible Burgundy Bullfrog

Robin's Theme - The Sensational Guitars of Dan and
Dale (This is also part of an exploitation album put
out by Tiffon which features nothing but Batman and
Robin-oriented songs. I only have the single released
from it which features a version of Batman Theme
that's extremely similar (if not an outright copy) of
The Marketts' version on Warner Brothers. That's on
the A side of the single, while Robin's Theme is on
the B. I've been told that the extremely frenzied
guitar solo on this song is by Sun Ra.)

> nobody loves the hulk - the not quite
Umm, are you sure you don't mean "Nobody Loves The
Hulk" by The Traits? That's the version I have with
the original cardboard sleeve. It's from 1969 and
it's in stereo, but it still sounds like it could've
come from 1966.

Back to Batman again: That version by The Standells
mentioned in an earlier post is also a bonus track on
Sundazed's CD reissue of "Dirty Water" if you can find
it.

the only version of this tune i have is a cover version by maureen's old
band the not quite, from a late 80s demo tape - great stuff!! never heard the
original, but i have just learned it's on a teenage shutdown, so i'll have to
pick that one up....cool song!

A...that reminds me...don't forget Link Protrudi and the Jaymen's "Batman"
on the Drive It Home album. Really funny back and forth schtick about
Batman and the Boy Wonder between Rudi and Mad Mike in the middle of the
song!

There are any number of Batman albums that came out in
66-67, generally with the Batman theme and a bunch of
Batman related instrumentals. The one I have is
"Let's Dance With The Villains - A Go-Go Party with
Bruce & The Robin Rockers". The songs are "Pow! Zop!
Wham!", "Fruggin' The Riddle" and "Batman Chase".

Marvel put out "Rock Reflections of Super Hero" with
70's AOR songs about Spider Man/Peter Parker. It is
truly unlistenable.

The New York Dolls covered "Courageous Cat" (who was
created by Bob Kane of Batman fame).

Then you have the Go-Nuts, who are actually snack
superheros in their own right.

Flaming Lips have "Waiting For A Superman".

Spin Doctors (yuck) do "Jimmy Olsen Blues"

The Makers have a song called "The Red Headed Beatle
of 1,000 BC" which is named after a Jimmy Olsen comic
book story from the 60's (natch).

AND OF COURSE....

Don't forget "(Wish I Could Like Like) Superman" and
"Catch Me Now I'm Falling (this is Captain America
Calling...)" by the Kinks.

One incredibly cool superhero tune is an instrumental by Nelson Riddle
called "Nelson's Riddler" It was on the flip side of Riddle's version of the
Batman Theme released in 20th Century Fox Records. It's a familiar tune, one
that they'd play anytime the Riddler appeared onscreen during the TV show.
It's given a kind of a jazzed up swingle singer treatment.
Has anyone named the Kinks' "Plastic Man"?

A band called the Shame Idols did a great one called "Superman". The
lyrics go "We're tired of Superman/He's a panty-wasted creep/He beats us
up for the fun of it/It's time we got him off the street....and so on!
It's a really great puky tune.

A couple more Batman-related tunes by European bands:

"Batman" - The Batmen (not the usual theme tune from the tv show, but an
original), on Prae Kraut Pandaemonium #9 and Die Deutschen Beat Bands CD.
"Robin Boy Wonder" - Robin, on The Big Freeze #2

A British group called Icarus recorded an entire album based on Marvel comics
characters in 1972, "The Marvel World of Icarus," that I'd like to hear
sometime.

I have a cassette copy of this 1966 album; used to own the LP too,
when I was a kid (it's long gone). One time I tracked down someone
who worked on this album (an engineer? his name escapes me now
(Ed Knowlton? or something like that?). I remember he told me it was
produced by Tom Wilson and featured Danny Kalb and Al Kooper
of the Blues Project...and yes, Herman Blount (alias "Sun Ra") is also
on this one. The twangy-surfy instrumentals have names like "Penguin's
Umbrella," "Penguin Chase," " Flight of the Batman" and (my favorite)
"Batman and Robin Swing."...if anyone's interested in more info, I
can do a little more digging and find the tape...
