Great stuff. IMHO it has a Hippy-Mod vibe with that flute weaving in and
out of each soulful track. "Handbags and Gladrags" is one of the best
versions I have heard, as for "Temptation 'Bout To Get Me" ...WOW! The
picture of the band on the back looks like a total throwback to '65 which
is funny 'cause the album came out around '70. This is the album that Paul
Weller always threatens to make.

Not a bad Saturday once again... First thing in the box that I pulled out
was an Easybeats 45, got it already but figured I'd have a friend that
would want it... Then, you don't see this very often, "Arnold Layne" by
Pink Floyd (Columbia)... Then, and I've been looking for this 45 for a
good while, "The Skies Above" by the Equals (President), and okay this is
the B-side but we all know that B-sides can more often than not be better
than the A-side. What was next? Something with one of those typically
pretentious sounding titles from 1969 by the pretentions sounding
Aphrodite's Child, but actually pretty good once I gave it a spin. This
is that Greek guy who had a few hits in the 70s, yeah? Also a version
of "Sweet Little 16", this one by Michael Cox (on HMV) but it's an RGM
(ie. Joe Meek) production so you gotta go for it, eh? And for only 50
pence each it's worth taking a risk... -- PJ

harmonies...definitely in the hippy-rock vein, but no stupid flower-power
stuff...maybe if the small faces had survived intact into the early 70s
(with
marriott, i mean) they might have sounded something like this....kinda
acoutic, pastoral but still soulful and ballsy. what the concensus on the
LP?? i liked it, i'm curious if everyone else does. >>

I see nothing wrong with it, and I have yet to see why everyone else hates
it. When you consider what else was going on in rock circa 1969-70---extreme
bubblepop on the left, "serious" hippie music on the right---you will then
realize that the Rationals' LP is an asskicker for its day, as much of a
Detroit manifesto as the Stooges or the MC 5 or even the Bob Seger System.
The only acoustic guitar I remember from the LP is during the between-song
interludes. I totally agree with the Small Faces analogy...that is, if
Marriott were still a member, they would sound like this.

Freddy Fortune (of Fortune & Maltese) once straightfacedly asked me why I
liked that album so much...for starters, the only other original Rationals
record I've been able to find (in a city as big as Chicago) is a Cameo 45 of
"Respect" b/w "Feelin' Lost." As you can see, I don't have much to compare it
to, but on its' own, the Crewe elpee is great. Garage fans tend to avoid this
LP like a bad disease, but this ain't the goddam Candymen---for the Woodstock
era, the Rationals' LP has a lot of truth, soul and energy in its grooves.
The average Deadhead would get a cardiac arrest trying to "trance-dance" to
THIS. Besides, gotta love that cover---here it is 1969, and they still dress
like 1966! Like they're auditioning for the Monkees or something!

Now, what I wanna know is: that live album on Total Energy (?). I've had my
eye on it, but there are only six songs...six LONG songs...is it rock-solid
Detroit music, or just a bunch of hippie jamming?

"I Am Gonna Unmask The Batman," a sixties soul dance number by Lacy Gibson.

It appears on Sun Ra's THE SINGLES, a collection of seven-inchers recorded
for the Saturn label. Ra owned the label, and played on all of the songs,
which run 50% R&B to 50% avant-garde jazz. It's a two-CD set on Evidence.

I was going to mention the Ides Of March's "Superman" single on Warner Bros.
(non-LP), but it IS from their Blood, Sweat & Tears period...if that's what
you want, there it is.

Anybody heard that other Spiderman rock record, on Buddah? (1972-73, or

superhero records, but apparently the concept was dropped after the Buddah

A couple from the 80's garage scene. Not sure of the title (wish I could
read the tracks on my records), but I'm pretty sure the C.H.U.D. had a song
to the effect, "I Don't Like Batman" on their kinky "Silouettes of Sound"
LP (on marbled green wax). And I can't remebmer for sure, but I think the
Marsupials may have had a song having to do with Supergirl's lungs! Anyone

That sounds like a cover of Donovan's "Superlungs My Supergirl," also recorded

Being a digest subscriber, someone may have hit this, but Jan and Dean
did a whole album in 1966 called Jan and Dean meet Batman and Robin. The
album is a weird mix of comedy skits and songs. If memory serves me
correctly, the villain is the Little Old Lady From Pasadena. My fave
song is "Robin the Boy Wonder", which I saw mentioned here by another
band, which I'm assuming is a cover.

And if you want a sight with hundreds of comic book references in songs

piece of crap, it's Burt Ward reading a sappy fan

I just posted an MP3 here:

Well, Joe, I hope you have a LOT of $$$ to buy these 45's you list.
Just about all of those Texas and Louisianna 45's have a hefty price tag on
'em.
Put it this way - ALL of the 45's you have for trade wouldn't cover ONE of
your wants (with maybe 5 exceptions)
I have a mint minus copy of the Clock Work Orange 45 on Creole for trade.
It USED to be a $75 record, but copies have dried up and a few have sold for
over $200.
If you're not aware of the high values, I hope I've enlightened you.
If you do know how rare and difficult your wants are, and you're tryin to
bait some no-nothing, well, good luck.
Don't think you'll find anyone on this list that dumb.

Well, Greg, the Ganim single was done in 1969, after the original lineup of
the Blues Magoos split up. This was just prior to the Peppy Castro
regrouping when they signed with ABC records.
The Ganim single is from June, 1969. Very HEAVY sounding take of "Who Do
You Love'.
Maybe Doug Sheppard would re-evaluate his Magoos stance on hearing this
single.

>Who the hell were (I'm assuming that's a past tense) these guys??

I got as far as learning they were a Boston band, and there's some early
Bomp-era Dwarves connection, but beyond that I know nada. With all the
Boston folks on this list, I figure someone knows more than I do. Are these
guys still playing in any capacity? Were they any good live? Just curious.

Lisa, I saw these guys play three times in New Haven, CT where I live back
in '86-88.
I bought their LP when it came out, and I couldn't believe how bad it
SUCKED! VERY slick, synthy-sounding...NOTHING like their live shows.
I thought these guys were incredible live. I got to talk with a few of the
guys in the group after the show. The first time I saw them, I was floored.
One of the best sets of 60's garage I've ever heard. Lots of energy, and
could these guys SING! They covered "Little Girl" by the Syndicate of Sound
(No one else has come close to doing this justice), and "Walk In The Sun" by
the Turtles, which blew me away, I mean, who in 1986 would cover that track?
Every other garage combo was playing "City Of People", "Good Times" "I Never
Loved Her"...The Malarians second show in New Haven took place on a Tuesday
night in the winter. There were maybe 20 people in the club. But the
Malarians did two long sets.
Their singer kinda reminded me of the singer for the UK band Madness - that
quirky body movement, except with a moptop haircut and Buddy Holly syled
specs. They all wore black turtlenecks and white levis with boots.
The Malarians, along with the Hysteric Narcotics, were two of the best
garage bands I've ever seen live (and yes, that includes the big name crews
like the Lyres and C. Kings).

I nominate my fave superhero song:

"Soul Superman" by the Hesitations (from Cleveland, Ohio. A KILLER soul
cut. Dunno if it's on any soul comp or not.

The Hesitations released several 45's on the Kapp label, with this one being
their best from May 1967. Also included on their 'Soul Superman' LP.

I remember seeing The Malarians at a Mind's Eye show at the old Tramps in
the late 80s. As I remember, they *were* pretty damned good, but when I
heard the record I, like Mike, was... uh, unimpressed. The Hysteric
Narcotics I liked better in both respects. They were fun live and on their
record they had some damn good songs. ("Monkey Bars" still runs around in
my mind from time to time.)

But I'd still pick the Lyres and the Kings live. Seeing either one in NYC
(or at Maxwells in Hoboken) in the mid-80s was absolutely phenomenal. For
that matter, seeing either one up at Scorgie's in Rochester during the same
time period was also pretty damned mindblowing.

Sometimes I wonder if certain bands would've gotten to the same level as
the C. Kings and The Lyres if the 80s garage boom had lasted a bit longer.
(Note: as far as I was concerned, by the time The Dive closed in '86, the
NYC scene was falling apart.) Hmm... perhaps this is another thread in
itself.

Uh, yeah sure, and all their customers are morrons. If you are
apparently smart enough to buy your records at a better price
elsewhere, don't you think that most of Da Capo's clientele 'd do
the same if given the chance?. The possibilities of obtaining music
these days are limitless, don't you think that overpricing records
would run one straight outta business?.
Truth is that most Mainland-European currencies took a nosedive
against both the dollar & pound since the introduction of the Euro ,
thus makin' imports way more expensive. (plus both countries have
had a real healthy economy over the previous years, at least the
americans were kind enough to elect Bush, and thus a guaranteed
downfall of their economy and better import prices for us in the near
future).
Whatever the reason for the price difference of that Turkish comp, I
dunno, but I get it wholesale at about 9 bucks (ex-tax, that is), so
maybe your German pals need their calculator checked....
Anyways, I've been dealin' with Michel for almost 20 years now and
never had the feelin' I'd been ripped off. As I'm also runnin' a record
shop in the same town as he, I'd even go as far that in some areas
he offers a better deal than I can ever do, and we're buyin' from the
exact same wholesalers, so there.
And another thing; if you have trouble with people or their policies
please go and ask those people IN PERSON instead of mouthing
off on some forum where they are obviously not part off and thus
can not defend themselves.
