There's a couple of extremely obscure Amerian mid-60s Batman 'homages':
"Batskinner" (Based on Muleskinner Blues - 'Good morning,
Commissioner...') and "The Bat-Mo". In fact they're SO obscure, I can't
think who did them - both were too lame to add to my database.

over 'em, but if I had equal numbers of opportunities to see them and the
Chesterfield Kings--The Malarians played here in Portland, Maine fairly
often--it would be a tougher call. Purists might balk, and you could make
an argument in favor of the Kings because they're more dedicatedly
straightfaced; The Malarians were strictly all about FUN. And for THAT
reason, I might lean in THEIR direction).

I realize that the C. Kings and the Lyres are holier than thou, and less
'famous' combos may not be worthy of measure against them, but as I see/hear
things, I judged my views on the Malarians, and the Hysteric Narcotics based
on the fact that I had never heard of either band prior to seeing them play
live, and also, that they delivered amazing sets which were unexpected.
I only saw the C. Kings play once, in 1986, just after Walter joined the
group on guitar. The show was good, I even liked the fact that they were
heading in the "...Doomsday" direction. And I've seen the Lyres more times
than any other group, at least thirty times over the years (and that may be
on the low side).
Needless to say, when I went to see the 'legends', I had high expectations
for their shows.
The Malarians, on the other hand, were a complete surprise. Ditto the
Hysteric Narcotics, who played out here in late '86 for the first time.
They may have had a record out before then, but I was unaware of them until
I saw them play in person.

Now, how about the WORST show by a garage-inspired combo? Besides my old
crew (we played lots of sucky shows, eh guys? I know you're here...) and
the Bean-town legend when he's on the sauce, what are some of the worst, or
most disappointing shows you've witnessed?
I saw Plan 9 at one of the Portland, Maine garage fests (lobsters cooking in
a pit on the beach yum!). Plan 9 by that time had gone completely
avant-garde or whatever you wanna call it. Awful. I couldn't even describe
what kind of "music" they were playing.

Greetings! If you guys get ahold of a video of Jacques Dutronc's "Les Gens

than THE MAN himself,Bobby Dylan. Imagine the offspring of THAT union. True,I
have an active imagination, but in "Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis

playing that song. It's a collaboration of Rick Coraccio,Kenne Highland, and

Re the below:

Yes I have this LP. Is it rare? <g> Anyway, the inside of the gatefold is a
Spiderman comic strip. It's a concept album. Don't think I've actually ever
played it all the way through though, just zipped in and out; ISTR it has
some fairly unremarkable (to my ears) early-70s-rock-ish songs interspersed
by over-serious acted dialog. Good for compilation tapes ISTR.

When I first saw both The Lyres and the C. Kings, I had no expectations
whatsoever. Why? Well, in the case of The Lyres, I was 18 and there (at
Irving Plaza, 7/20/84) to see The Mosquitos. The Lyres turned out to be an
amazing bonus. (By the way, I could be wrong, but I believe Steve Coleman
may have some of that set available for listening on his website.) It wasn't
till I got back to college that fall for my sophomore year that I heard _On
Fyre_ (and was blown away again.)

I saw the Kings for the first time sometime in '84, as well. Again, I didn't
have their records yet. Seeing them at Scorgie's in Rochester was a
revelation. They were completely crazed up there. And down in NYC, they were
also fantastic... It was sort of like a second home for them. The shows at
Maxwells in Hoboken were also pretty amazing, with killer parties next door
before and after at, I think, Bruce Planty's apartment.

i didn't know enough to consider them "legends" at the time. To me, these
were just amazing rock'n'roll bands and I was thrilled to see them play.
But that was true of *any* band I saw that delivered the goods. Heck,
between '83 and '86, I probably saw The Mosquitos 60 times. I can't imagine
how many times I've seen The Lyres over the years. With the Kings, the count
is lower 'cuz they've probably come down only once every couple years since
1990. (I was lucky enough to be in Rochester for a wedding in '95 and luck
into a C. Kings/Lyres double-bill for the first time in nearly 10 years.)
But there are TONS of bands I've seen more times than I can remember... And
that's 'cuz they blew me away so much. There are lots of other bands (The
Hysteric Narcotics definitely included) that I wish had played many more
times in my general vicinity. But that's the luck of the draw... I'm glad I
used to drive out to Bethlehem, PA all the time to see The Original Sins. To
me, those guys were one of the best damn bands around. And people *still*
haven't figured that out. Just listen to _Big Soul_, _The Hardest Way_ or
_Move_ and maybe you'll understand. Or The Voodoo Dolls... YEOW! The Devil
Dogs, The Vacant Lot, The Secret Service... The list (and the beat) goes on.

Was there a point to this? Hmm...

I read, via Ted:

<<Upon further research, I discovered a huge error on my part. The Buckingham security guard is Dennis MICCOLIS, not lead singer Dennis TUFANO.>>

THOUGHT so. That made more sense. But this should not be disappointing, because Miccolis probably has an even MORE interesting story to tell. He didn't LEAVE the band before "Don't You Care"....he was FIRED. Both the Sundazed liners and the liners on that Sony Legact "Best Of" say this....and they do NOT elaborate. Has to be a story there. (Find out, also, if "Miccolis" is the correct name. That's the way it appears on the first LP and the Sundazed notes...but the legacy notes have it as "Miccols.")

Although, to these ears, Marty Grebb was much more of an MVP than Dennis M would have been in the latter-day Buckinghams....Dennis' much-cheesier organ sound really was a strong contribution to that first LP.

Get us the skinny, Ted!

I'd like to find their album, as it's close to the top of my "damn, I wish
I'd picked that up" list, even though when it came out I was disappointed
because it wasn't ALL as fantastic as the 45 I had by them, "Wild as Soul"/
"Such A Mystery" (I seem to remember that the B-side wasn't on the album,
though I could be wrong)

A while back, I found a post-album 45 they recorded with a new drummer and
keyboard player. "Never Do Know"/ "I Ain't Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore"
which isn't bad. The A reminds me of the Fleshtones and the B is a garagey
version of the Young Rascals song. (Sorta Lyres-ish)
Nice, but that first 45 was amazing, and it didn't sound like anyone else
around. BTW, the 45 mentions that it's from a second album, but I don't know
if it was ever released.

I saw them once at The Dive and, yeah, they were fantastic live.

Okay, so I thought I'd ask the Kaisers about this... I e-mailed Gus to ask
if he could tell me more about it and he replied, "Yes, but I've forgotten.
We did record an album at Toe Rag last year for release this year. I'm
quite busy with work just now but I will endeavour to get the details from
George and send you them asap." Erm, not a lot of help really. But - you

No, the b/w shot on the back sleeve of the album. The guys are walking
along a wooded path and are wearing Spencer Davis Group/Small Faces type
gear and have Mod haircuts. Great shot. Btw my copy of the Crewe album is
shagged-out but still pretty damn fine to hear. Is it worth shelling out
on the CD bootleg and is the mastering acceptable? Geez, how I wish
someone could get hold of the Rationals catalogue and do them justice in
the re-issue market. Boo, hiss to the nasty man at Cameo Parkway.

What about Paul McCartney's "Magneto and Titanium Man"? Definitely a

i don't think everybody has enough time to search for cheaper records. also
if you want to buy only 1 or 2 records it's not cheap at all to go to
germany or belgium and try to find them, so i think many record delaers in
holland misuse this.
also many people who are buying 60s reissues are middle age with good jobs
and high incomes and maybe they don't care if they pay 5-6 US$ more, but for
me it's too expensive.
i also have friends who are doing the same like me - just go across the
border and buy records cheaper. i can compare the prices and i'm not blind.
records in holland are TOOOOOO EXPENSIVE, not only for me but also for
somebody with STRONG DOLLAR in his pocket!

>Truth is that most Mainland-European currencies took a nosedive

not all records are IMPORT! example i named "turkish delights" is
EUROPEAN (DUTCH) release. do you have to import it for dollars maybe???

>Whatever the reason for the price difference of that Turkish comp, I
>dunno, but I get it wholesale at about 9 bucks (ex-tax, that is), so
>maybe your German pals need their calculator checked....

first i don't understand how you can buy records (VINYL) for wholesale price
when your shop is CD SHOP and you don't sell any vinyl at all!!! if you
bought only one record for yourself - then 9 US$ is not high at all (i whish
i could pay the same). but if you buy more copies - i think than it's much
cheaper than 9 US$.

all i know is that i pay records in Germany or Belgium (Antwerpen and
Mechelen) 5 US$ cheaper. maybe they have special calculators. i know only
one record shop here in holland where they have normal record prices and
it's INDEPENDENT OUTLET in Amsterdam - they probably use bad german
calculators!!!

>Anyways, I've been dealin' with Michel for almost 20 years now and
>never had the feelin' I'd been ripped off.

MICHEL IS OK! HE NEVER RIPPED ME OFF! HIS SHOP IS THE BEST SHOP I
EVER SAW IN MY LIFE!!! but his prices are not for my pocket anymore!!
i still buy records there - stuff i must have. few years ago i used to buy
much much more. he didn't have such high prices before. in last 2-3 years
record prices in dutch record shops (not only Da Capo) went for about 40%
and very often even higher. as far as i know US$ didn't go so high comparing
with euro. anyway dollar went high for german and belgian record shops too -
so why don't they have such high prices??!!!

>As I'm also runnin' a record
>shop in the same town as he, I'd even go as far that in some areas
>he offers a better deal than I can ever do, and we're buyin' from the
>exact same wholesalers, so there.

i don't know why you compare your CD shop with Da Capo? they are 2 totaly
different kinds of shops. you are selling mostly new alternative (college)
and mainstream rock + some alternative dance CD's for students and Da Capo
is specialised for 60s, garage, punk, psych. he also has some brit pop and
funk stuff, but not much. you also have some 60s reissue cd's and new garage
punk, but very very little.

>And another thing; if you have trouble with people or their policies
>please go and ask those people IN PERSON instead of mouthing
>off on some forum where they are obviously not part off and thus
>can not defend themselves.

i know Michel and i told him that i don't like his high prices IN PERSON. he
wasn't so pissed off about it at all. anyway, my email wasn't about high
prices in Da Capo, but about high record prices in whole holland (including
your CD shop). and i think it's not ok that people think that it's like that
in whole europe when it's not.

i'm not happy with this situation here at all. i would like to go to Da Capo
and buy tones of records like i used to do, but i just can't afford it
anymore. and that's the case with other good record shops here. because you
can't sell new garage punk bands for such high prices, many new records and
new unknown bands are not available in shops here. i think such situation
kills new music.

"Robin Boy Wonder", included in the second(?) volume of the Big Freeze
comp, is great!(was the flip comped anywhere? I don't think I've heard it)
However, my favorite Batman themed song is on a 60's LP by Pachito -- la
voz infantil de Puerto Rico as proclaimed on the record's cover! -- a 10
year old who sings in Spanish "Yo quiro ser Batman" backed by what looks
like an American garage band. Anyone else has heard this one? It's absolutely
crazy!

Aphrodite's Child featured more than just one Greek guy with major
hits! Both Demis Roussos and Vangelis (V.Papathanasiou -- "Chariots of
fire" soundtrack...) were members of the band. What were the songs on
the single that you got? Most of what I've heard by them (not very much)
is, to put it mildly, uninteresting but if you ever get the change listen
to "Magic Mirror". It's a psychedelic (a better description might
be "psychotic"-- like if the band is on amphetamine) killer!!!

Hey, does Bazooka Joe count as a Super Hero? If he does, what is the name
of that damn band who wrote not one, but THREE, songs about him? Answers

oh, ok - that's the front cover pic on the boot CD...the road they're
walking down looks like part of a park south of here where i used to drive
around w/ my punk-ass teenage hoodlum friends, smoking pot, drinking warm
meister-brau and doing doughnuts in flower arrangements. ah youth.

<< Boo, hiss to the nasty man at Cameo Parkway. >>

right on! isn't the bad man in question none other than allen klein? i
would be tempted to say "fuck allen klein" if i wasn't afraid he was going to
send some angry teamsters after me to break mr smarty-pant's legs for him and
teach him some respect. mr klein - we fixed that LEAKY FAUCET real good.
remember john belushi doing the allen klein character in the rutles? that
may be my favorite part, when he comes outta the elevator w/ his thugs and
people start diving into potted plants for cover.
anyway, a lot of rationals stuff is floating around napster - i highly
recommend that those unfamiliar w/ them check some of their stuff out -
they're great!!

In "Save Me" by Aretha Franklin, the lyrics go:

It's gonna the Caped Crusader, Green Hornet, Kato,
too/
I'm in so much trouble I don't know what to do

Peter Zaremba's Love Delagation covered it, too.
