In a message dated 1/22/01 6:23:02 PM Central Standard Time, Mop Top Mike
asks:

<< Now, how about the WORST show by a garage-inspired combo? >>

Saw this band open for the Untamed Youth at a suburban banquet hall in
Bloomington, IL about four years ago. Unlike most modern-day garage bands,
they looked old enough to have lived through the NUGGETS era. They started
out fine, but took a wrong turn midset and started doing these extended jams.
I'd mention their name, except (a) I forgot, and (b) no one on this list
would know 'em anyway. I don't think they ever did anything significant.

I saw the Loved Ones open for fellow Hightone artist Dick Dale back in '94.
While it wasn't necessarily atrocious, I was wondering what the fuss was
about. (I'm referring to the Loved Ones, but truthfully Dick Dale was
beginning to suck around this time period, as well.)

Of all the clubs I've played in over the years, Ralph's Diner is one of the
coolest and most fun. I've been haunting the place for 20 years and this
weekends show promises to be one of the highlights.

Friday Jan. 26th Sit N Spin, The Deal, and the Downbeat 5
Worth the trip!

Coming up in about a month, also at Ralph's will be
Mondo Topless, The Downbeat 5, and The Nines
Worth a return trip!

Hope to see some of ya there.

Hey Joe!

First you wrote this, subject: 45rpm Want List:

>>Hey Bompers,
Anyone willing to part with the following 45s? Have a look at my trade list
at:

ORIGINAL (!!!!( 45s Wanted

ADAM - Eve/Where Has My Little Girl Gone - Mala
 + 66 (!!!) other 45's
ZOOFS - Not So Near/Get To Know Yourself - Deesu<<

To which Mop Top Mike commented:

>>Well, Joe, I hope you have a LOT of $$$ to buy these 45's you list. Just
about all of those Texas and Louisianna 45's have a hefty price tag on 'em.
Put it this way - ALL of the 45's you have for trade wouldn't cover ONE of
your wants (with maybe 5 exceptions) I have a mint minus copy of the Clock
Work Orange 45 on Creole for trade. It USED to be a $75 record, but copies
have dried up and a few have sold for over $200. If you're not aware of the
high values, I hope I've enlightened you. If you do know how rare and
difficult your wants are, and you're tryin to bait some no-nothing, well,
good luck. Don't think you'll find anyone on this list that dumb.<<

And I wonder if he found his tongue again, the thing being buried so deep
in cheek.....

To which you snapped back with:

>>Hey MopTop, Geesh! Sorry if my meager trade list offended the eyes of a
guru! Nobody trying to do any baiting. Just putting it out there and maybe
garner some interest. Guess I should sell off my collection and dry up and
blow away, cause I'll just never, ever, ever find any of these 45s. In
reality I should have posted that I would also be willing to purchase or
sell. Or maybe, this list is not the place for posting want lists?<<

Joe,

Lemme first state, that I have absolutely no idea of prices I'd have to pay
for 60's 45's, especially not originals! But I read a lot of insane prices
here on the list and sometimes pay insane prices (that are still only a
fraction of prices I read here...) for records I really, really want.

So when I saw your wishlist the first thing that crossed my mind was:
"Hell, here's an ambitious guy!" My second thought, after more close
exminiation of your list, was: "Fuck! here's another rich bitch!"

Then Mike gave his, no doubt well-meant, comment, after which I had me a
third thought: "Joe is even more ignorant about prices than I am!!" (which
is a reassuring thought as well.... LOL!!!).

And after your reaction I'm sure about the last thought I had: "Joe can't
recognize friendly advice!"

Hell! I would be glad to get those songs on samplers, I wouldn't even dream
of getting 45's, originals or even reissues, without running a serious risk
of going broke. I'm glad with a neighbour who, even after I told him how
rare that Rolling Stones' "Time is on my side" organ-version 45 could be,
was still willing to just give it to me, in exchange for a cd with his 4
early 60's John Coltrane 45's and 2 late 50's Sonny Rollins 45's, which are
all mine now as well... Oh, he also gave me a pile of original Beatles'
45's, Zappa's "It can't happen here" and some 40 other 60's 45's and he
still doesn't wanna know what they're worth. Guess I don't want to
either...

That's it, almost 8, time to prepare to go to work...

L8er,
Jan (listening to Eddie Holland's "Leaving here"!!! Really!!!)

Jeroen,

There is no reason to be so unfriendly.
I think Vanya is stating her opinions in a much more reasonable way than you
are.

And don't put words in her mouth ...

Just my 2 cents

Re this:

You must mean Mr Ron Decline.

The whole Rutles film is essential viewing, and it still surprises me how
cleverly it was done. Just one of the best moment IMO is the sequence with
the blues singer (Blind Lemon Pie?) in New Orleans, who says he taught the
"Rittles" everything they knew - that is, until his missus comes out of the
house to tell the camera
"He's lyin! Every time there's a documentary 'bout white music round here,
HE claims HE started it! Last week it was the Everly Brothers" hysterical

I have to say though that for me, the attempts to revive the Rutles haven't
been too great, I found their follow-up LP ("Archaeology") mediocre at best,
and I had a freebie to go see Innes & co at their Xmas gig as reviewed in
this month's Mojo mag, and I have to say that's a VERY kind review IMO. It
was a bit of a travesty. Shame.

Your own, your very own
