Hi y'all,

Packing for the move to another location, tomorrow, not a chance of any
work to be done, so I'm already bored stiff!!

So why not take a break and bore you with my boredom?

Nah.... just some history....

On January 23, in

1951, Muddy Waters recorded "Honey bee", "Howling wolf", "Long distance
call" and "Too young to know" at Chicago's Chess Studios;
1952, Rosco Gordon recorded "Decorate the counter" at Memphis' Sun Studios;
1952, Howlin' Wolf recorded "Highway man" and "My troubles and me", also at
Sun;
1958, Elvis Presley "Steadfast, loyal and true" and "Young dreams" at Los
Angeles' Radio Recorders. He also re-recorded "King Creole", leaving his
January 15 effort redundant;
1962, Johnny Winter recorded "Ease my pain" at Jay Miller's famous Excello
Studios in Crowley LA;
1963, the Beatles, after having had a busy BBC day, now had a bad day.
Being scheduled for a gig at Liverpool's Cavern Club, they had to get into
their van and drive all the way north. Problem was, that the windshield had
shattered and it was one of those winters... Dutch Bompers will understand
'Elfstedentocht'... The Beatles tried to stay warm by laying on top of each
other in the back of the van... Three weeks later my kid brother was born
and his cradle was not allowed to be upstairs, as there was no heating
there... Poor, poor Beatles... Oh, they made it just in time for the gig!
Driver/assistant road manager Mal Evans survived as well... A toast to him!
1970, Tyrone Davis recorded "Turn back the hands of time", in New York;
1970, Jimi Hendrix recorded "Country blues" at New York's Record Plant;
1971, Fleetwood Mac recorded a BBC session. "Preachin'" from that session
is to be found on "Live at the BBC";
1975, the Rolling Stones recorded "Melody" in Rotterdam, Holland, using
their own Mobile Unit;
1980, Saxon recorded a BBC Friday Rock Show session, playing "Backs to the
wall", "Stallions of the highway", "Motorcycle man", "Still fit to boogie"
and "747 (strangers in the night)". Not really being a Bomp-ish band, Saxon
were the ones who triggered my intensive concert visiting for the next
decades, although after their gig I swore I'd never see another Heavy Metal
band again: I was half-deaf for three days! Within a month I'd picked up my
bad habit again, sometimes seeing three or four bands a week for the next 5
years. Noise is addictive...

That's it for now, maybe my PC is still hooked up tomorrow.....

L8er,
Jan (now, thru' the noise of people tearing up the place, to the Buzzcocks'
"Love bites", part of their great "Product" box)

JH & others, I have no intention to be unfriendly (or to defend high
record prices for that matter), I just jumped in at what I saw as a
presumptuous posting, with a certain over-eagerness in there as
well, on what has been my favorite record shop over the years.
Is that clear enough?,

money, do you really think it's good for business to price everything as
high as possible?. <<

Second off, I gotta agree as well, that prices are way too high, compared
to production costs anyway, but I basically have no choice: I want music
and loads of it, so I pay willingly and I pay to Jeroen or to Michel,
knowing that I'm not ripped off (at least, that's what they make me
believe...... LOL!!!)

>>PS; Jan, would you be so kind and explain to this gal that the shop I'm
tryin' to run is in fact much better than she makes it out to be?, vinyl or
no....<<

NO VINYL AT YOUR SHOP??? Sorry!

Vanya, dearest!

Plato & Da Capo are among the nicest record shops I know (and I've been to
a few...), but I guess it takes some time to find that out. I'm one who
likes to hang around in a record shop, listening, looking, chatting,
helping clear out the beer supply (it's a dirty job...), in short spending
some time in heaven. I gotta agree with Vanya, that there's a load of
shitty music at Plato's, YET, go down to the basement and find yourself in
R&R&B heaven!! And if you take your time, you'll find something nice on the
groundfloor as well (I ALWAYS DO!!). And if it's not there, I just order
it...

Being, sometimes against better financial judgment, a faithful customer, I
avoid other shops, basically because I'm happy with the shops I frequent...

Now there's one point I'd like to "attack" both of you on: you both compare
US Dollars to Dutch Guilders and German Marks, making just straight swaps
and I think that's not right! I was thinking about going to the latest
Cavestomp, yet left my plan, as soon as I saw hotelprices and ticketprices
etc. You both gotta take in account the 'normal' monthly income in national
currency and then start comparing record prices. I told this before to
someone Stateside: I wanted to have Billy Idol's "Vital Idol" and Jeroen
told me he could only order it Stateside but that I had to prepared to pay
some 70 guilders, whereas the European had cost me only about 30 guilders,
some 10 years ago!! Go figure!! I know it's not the best example, but
still!! US import is (too) expensive, but that is about to change, thankx
to G. Wanker...

Everybody happy?

BatJan, SuperJan, whatever (still listening to those awfully fuckin' great
Buzzcocks)

If any BOMP-listers would like to check out a neat little cheesy relic from the psychedelic age (other than the Strawberry Alarm Clock, that is), here's one for ya...It's a psychedelic Gillette Razor commercial from 1968, with a song that goes 'He's got the knack,' sung by a very cool British female voice over a backing track that sounds like a cross between The Doors' "When The Music's Over" and The Shadows Of Knight's "Bad Little Woman." Cash-in on the psychedelic era? Hell yeah, but it sounds more authentic than most cash-ins.

Anyway, to hear it, go to http://www.musicradio77.com/brucie68.html This will take you to a page that presents a full length Cousin Brucie (Yeeeee!!!) radio show from WABC, September 9, 1968 in Real Audio. Select the 8-9PM portion, go in 47 minutes and 23 seconds (go a minute earlier if you'd like to hear Neil Diamond sing about Thom McCann shoes) and enjoy.

If you do check it out, please post your comments here. I think it's a pretty coool tune. :>

If you want to hear their jazz influences really come out, you need to get the
two
Chapter III albums. The vocals will probably take some getting used to, but
there's a great slow version of "Mister, You're A Better Man Than I" on the
first album.

God, really?? I LOVED that album. I thought, in fact, that the music on that record actually outstripped the stuff in the film. Now, don't all jump on me.... the "All You Need Is Cash" music was absolutely brilliant; but each song was a very obvious rip of the song it was intended to parody. A spectacular job, yes. But the stuff on "Archaeology" was the most brilliant collection of Beatles-INSPIRED music I've heard in a very long time. How can you not bounce around the room to "We've Arrived, And To Prove It We're Here"??? And I must've laughed for an hour when I heard the "Little Help From My Friends"-inspired tune wherein the Ringo character keeps trying to stop the others from horning in on his "moment"......" 'Ang on, who are you?" "We're the ootha membas of the band, we're only tryin' to help you with yer song.." "But I don't WANT any help!" "Oh yeah, what about the middle-eight then?"

Great stuff.

Everything from their Fontana period (after Paul Jones left) has been
collected on the 'ascent of mann' 2CD.
I think it's brilliant.

For their earlier period "Manfred Mann at Abbey Road" is worth checking out.

Folks,

This week we asked local artist Lori Wray and her collaborator Todd Newman
to stop by the Radio Rumpus Room to play a few songs prior to next Friday's
CD release party for her newest full-length, "Hisstory." (Local listeners
are advised that the 7th Street Entry event is this Friday, Jan. 26, and
will include performances of the 27 Various and the Conquerors.)

As always we say "thanks" to the artists and labels responsible for
producing tonight's music, and to the loyal listeners who encourage us to
air it every week! (For six years now, Radio Rumpus Room has been broadcast
Fridays at 9-10:30 p.m. on KFAI Fresh Air Radio, FM 90.3 Minneapolis and
106.7 St. Paul. The show streams live in RealAudio, and as always, our most
recent shows are archived in their entirety in RealAudio -- check out the
RRR web page to see what we've been up to!)

Here's the Radio Rumpus Room playlist for Friday, January 19, 2001:

SAVVY SHOW STARTER (ALWAYS LOCALLY RECORDED!)
Prince and the Paupers -- Exit (Mondo Frat Dance Bash A Go Go; Arf! Arf!)

Prince & The Paupers were a popular teen band in Mankato, Minnesota from
1963-67. The title of this instro B-side of their sole 7-inch was
reportedly "inspired" by the sign at the door of the recording studio.
Sheesh, boys!

Bongo King -- Big Gun Shoot Out (Operation Latin Surf; Deep Eddy)
Fendermen -- Torture (The Best of the Fendermen; Plum)
Don Rich & the Buckaroos -- Spanish Moonlight (Country Pickin': The Don
Rich Anthology; Sundazed)
New World Relampagos -- Cuando Cesa la Lluvia (New World Relampagos; Sirena)

Hondells -- Death Valley Run (You're Gonna Ride With Us: Vol.1 -- 1964; ATM)
Super Stocks -- This Bike of Mine (The Complete Recordings; One Way)
Crestones -- The Chopper (Get a Board; Satan)
Preston Wayne Four -- The Hearse (Themes From Wayne Manor; Dino)

Crimson Shadows -- It's Cold (Out of Our Minds; Inbetweens)
Moviees -- Become One of Them (Become One of Them; Sundazed)
Live Five -- Move Over & Let Me Fly (Northwest Battle of the Bands Vol.2:
Knock You Flat!; Sundazed)
Creation -- Making Time (Painter Man; Edsel)

Colony -- Pseudo Psycho Intuition [Politician] (Yeah Yeah Yeah; Cheep! Cheep!)
Invasion -- Do You Like What You See (CD-R; original Dynamic Sound single)
Triumphs -- Lovin' Cup (The World Ain't Round, It's Square; Teenage Shutdown)
Bedlam Four -- Hydrogen Atom (Money Music; August)

Fred Eaglesmith -- Water in the Fuel (Lipstick Lies & Gasoline; Razor & Tie)

(Lori Wray and Todd Newman in-studio segment for "Hisstory" CD pre-release)
Lori Wray -- Trapeze (Hisstory; Spitbite)
Wrong Side Up (live, Lori and Todd vocals)
MTC 1990 (live, Lori vocal)
Lori Wray -- True Love in a Day (Hisstory; Spitbite)

And that was that!

Lee,

i'm pretty sure the newest G4s can be purchased w/ a cd burner inside. that
would definitely be the way to go if you're getting a mac -- apple just
released new software last week (free!) called iTunes that does what many of
the expensive programs like toast or jam do. it allows you to burn cds and
even converts mp3s for you to burn to cd. (but it only will burn to the new
built-in mac burners.)

also, i know some folks claim to be able to hear the difference between
audio burners and computer burners -- i'm no expert -- that may be the case.
but i do know that transferring vinyl via the computer is a WHOLE LOT less
hassle and gives you a LOT more control. (i also suspect that w/ much of
the stuff i'm into these days -- 70s new wave/powerpop comps and 60s garage
comps that are mostly boots transferred from vinyl -- the source is so
spotty you would never be able to tell the difference.)

i'm not trying to start another huge debate on the list, but i figured some
people might find this new info helpful.

A little off subject, but I picked up the Best of
Manfred Mann vol. 2, which covers the Mike D'Abo
years. Talk about underrated, too! There's this one
track, "It's So Easy Falling," which sounds like a
lost Beach Boys track from the Pet Sounds album.
Other real stand-outs are "Trouble and Tea" and their
original version of "Ha Ha Said The Clown" (though I
admit I prefer the Yardbirds' version). Who can
forget their great hippy anthem, "The Mighty Quinn?"
I could kill Jerry Garcia for appropriating that into
Deadheadom. Luckilly, Eating crap and doing drugs
already did. I don't find D'Abo's voice as gutsy as
Jones', but he had really great pop sensibilities.

Subject: CLUB 66/77 - JANUARY BACCHUS RELEASE GIVEAWAY

THURSDAY, JANUARY 25 2001

The Bigfoot Lodge and Dionysus Records presents CLUB 66/77
The last Thursday of every month. 9:00 PM-2:00 AM

Thanks to all who came to our last shindig! The club is quickly becoming
thee coolest weeknight hangout in all of Los Angeles! All night long you'll
hear the shakin, sizzling, raw AND sweet sounds of your favorite and
soon-to-be favorite (i.e. a few obscurities) '60s garage, pop, early psych,
mod, freakbeat and bubblegum mixed with '70s punk, powerpop and related BACK
TO BACK!

Last month, I was feeling quite zoned from being at the tail end of that
hideous flu. So, I forgot to do the East Side Sound Vol. 2 giveaway as
promised. Oops! To make up for it, if you enter the door between 9:30 and
11:00, TWO LUCKY PEOPLE WILL HAVE A SHOT AT WINNING A COMPLETE SET OF THE
NEW BACCHUS ARCHIVES RELEASES FOR JANUARY. THAT'S FOUR CDS!

THE HT3: 1965 recordings of a charming teen combo from Minnesota
SONNY FLAHARTY & THE MARK V "HEY CONDUCTOR": '63-'68 collection of stomp,
garage and early psych from former rockabilly cat who joined up with a
garage band, creating the amazing '67 title song and more.
THE EAST SIDE SOUND VOL. 2: Our second collection of East LA winners
featuring Godfrey & Friends, Mark & The Escorts, The Premiers, Thee Impalas
and more!
LEGEND CITY VOL. 1: Ferocious mid-60s garage, folk and psych Gems from
Phoenix. Features four songs by The Wildflowers, a group led by Michael
Bruce who soon became a part of The Spiders who became.. Alice Cooper!

Each CD is lovingly detailed with accurate liner notes, photos and great
sound! If the winner(s) are more partial to '70s stuff, we'll have
Controllers CDs on hand as a consolation prize. We look forward to seeing
all our old friends and many new ones as well!

Thanks from "DJ Lee."

Are you sure that was '86, because I thought Walt joined them after
>"Doomsday" came out in '87!
Mike is absolutely correct in this. Walt (ex-BBBs, The Swing
Set, and The Insiders, I believe) joined up when Ori left (after a
Buffalo - or maybe Cleveland - show) in early '86. Something puts the
time around March in my mind.
Rick and Walt played together in the band till Rick left around
June '87. In fact, the Doomsday record release party (late June or early
July '87) was the first show I saw them do without him. In fact, it was
probably the first one with "Sonic Boy" Mike Pappert (who did an
excellent self-released semi-solo Power Pop/Mod single as The Group
Image). When I saw Rick in the audience before the band was about to go
on, I obviously had to ask. At the time, he just said that he was
planning to go live with his girlfriend in California.
A year or so later, I ran into him at the Big Kahuna in NYC. I
remember him telling me he'd had offers to join both The Fuzztones and
The Lyres at various points, but wasn't interested. He did say that the
reason he'd left was that he'd become disillusioned with the band's
direction. He also indicated that Walt was feeling much the same way.
(This probably explains Walt's departure, as well.) Of course, there are
many sides to the story. A couple years later, Walt and Rick
joined forces in a group called The Pawns. I don't think that lasted
too long, tho'. And now Rick's in McFadden's Parachute. (Or was last
time I heard.)

- - - Blair >

Yeah, you're both absolutely right! I was confusing Walt with Mike! So,
it was Mike that was playing the guitar even though Rick was helping out
as a roadie. I remember that Group Image single, although I never got
one, it was a cool single.

Sigh, there is one Manfred Mann B-side that I have yet to find on any
compilation.
I don't remember the A-side, but the song I'd really love to find is called
"There
Is A Man." It's this really weird thing, more spoken than sung. The
narrator talks
about a little man over in the corner that only he can see. When he tells
other people
about the little man "They beat me" whereupon the rest of the band chimes in
"We
beat him." Does anybody know of an LP or CD that includes "There Is A Man"?

Subject: If you got two channels where does the damn Mono go?

I picked up a clutch of Imperial/Stax LPs...fairly clean, tho' not without
any marks...right, and they feel like they are pressed on the evil styrenne
(the imperials LPs are of that unfortunate hazy grey wax...think Golden
Crest quality)...point being, these are relatively static filled w/o being
excessively worn or dirty...HOWEVER, last night I noticed the static only
really plays through one channel...so, here's my question, so when playing
a Mono record through a stereo (magnetic even) cartidge, which channel
actually plays the correct side to side reading of the Mono record?

Second question...Should I presume I can find a ceramic Mono cartridge for
my stereo rig or do I need to set up another system w/a (older?) turntable
rigged for Mono only?

Yep. I mentioned this off-list to Lee, but others might be interested,
as well. Go to http://www.apple.com for more info. I think the important
addition in this respect is the new program they're including called iDVD.
Yep, the new Macs are being set up to burn DVDs (CDs, too, I think) right
outta the box. Now *that* sounds fun! Use iMovie to create your own flicks,
then burn 'em to DVD and show 'em. Actually, I'd love to shoot video of some
bands, then burn that to DVD for my friends. Hmm... *I* want a new G4.

<< Now, how about the WORST show by a garage-inspired combo? >>

I can't remember what they were called, but I saw this band once at the
Silver Dollar in Toronto, it was at that Chesterfield Kings show I think,
and they were terrible. They did all the "typical" garage covers you know,
"City Of People," "99th Floor," "Green Fuz," "I Can Only Give You
Everything," etc. etc., but with this awful female vocalist trying her
hardest to do Janis Joplin but failing miserably. Also, they had an
incredibly wanky lead guitarsist pulling out Eddie Van Helen-esque riffs,
and who seemed like he hated playing this stuff, and doing these stupid
guitar solos was all that made him excited about it.

A year or so ago, my band the Infernal Three played a show with this band 24
Robbers opening, and they really sucked. They did the worst version of "Have
Love Will Travel" I've ever heard. They later played with the band I'm in
now, the Reckless Bastards, but before I joined, and apparently they were so
lame, they got kicked off the stage by the promoter!!
