It's the b-side of "My Name is Jack," from the summer of '68. For years I
carried a fuzzy childhood memory of seeing a promotional film on TV
(presumably on American Bandstand, though I didn't normally watch it, I
watched cartoons) for "My Name is Jack," with a band member (Manfred?)
sitting with a host (Dick Clark?) and introducing the film. All I really
remembered was the words "My name is Jack and I live in the back of the
Greta Garbo home," with mental images of the film and of the two men sitting
in the studio. Eventually I learned who did it and then later found the
record, which happily matched my memory. I think I'll go listen to it now,
and the b-side as well. I don't know where else you can find "There is a
Man."

there's a big hitch though -- only the high-end (read: expensive) dvd players
will play burned/cdr dvds. for example, the dvd player i just got last week
for my birthday (yay!), which is really nice, will not play 'em. kinda blows,

yeah, that would be the way to go, though cash-flow makes it not possible as
i have to upgrade my whole office (i.e. high-end laser printer, usb zip
drive, new scanner, etc. oh, and of huge importance, a new chair!). i ended
up scoring the imac dv se with 256mb ram/30gig hd for a cool $1325.

I am just looking at DVDs tentatively, but from what I read, ALL the
Phillips-Maganvox DVD players will play recorded CD-Rs (and I assume
DVD--not sure) since Phillips (which popularized, maybe invented, cassettes
in the 60s) is heavily into recording units and making the disks to record
onto, too.

Any verify this info?

"Magic Mirror" is a b-side as well! The a-side (I think it was a hit) of
the single is awful. I haven't heard "You always stand in my way". What

i discuss this with you and i discussed it with other record shop owners.
nobody is giving me any good reason for such high prices in just few years.
all of you have the same reason and that's US dollar, but i saw that record
prices in holland are even too high for people from USA (and their incomes
are not dutch guilders, but US$s). and anyway dollar didn't go that high.
but what i know is that standard in holland went high and many people have
much more money than before. and to me it seems this is the real reason for
high record prices. anyway now we are going to talk about economy and
politics and i don't feel like that.

i don't know what they do in germany, BELGIUM (which is smaller country than
the netherlands) and INDEPENDENT OUTLET (record shop in AMSTERDAM), but i
know there are many more new bands records to buy in germany and many more
gigs (i'm talking about garage punk). and i don't see how they are killing
new music and new bands with that.

i don't know much about Crypt, but i know their records were cheap from the
begining. even now Teenage Shotdown serie is very cheap, at least i got it
cheap in Independent Outlet.

anyway, i got many records in germany and belgium (like Frankenstein Drag
Queens From PLanet 13, Los Banditos, Mensen, Gee Strings, Mighty Gordinis,
Accel 4, ... and "I could go on here for ages", great bands that you can't
buy anywhere here in shops. you can't sell them for big money (put high
marge), so you don't sell them at all. all those bands don't tour holland
at all (maybe Vera Groningen, where some real fanatics work). but they tour
neighbouring countries. i really miss all these things and i remember very
well how it was before when we had almost every week good gigs in Utrecht
and almost every day somewhere in holland.

i suppose that the problem is more complex but i think that (at least) dutch
record shops can do something similair as their german coleges.

There Is A Man was the flip of My Name Is Jack. I don't think I've seen this on cd. The original single used to be pretty common in the cut out bins, with pic sleeve! There are a few other good B sides that aren't on album like I Want To Be Rich. I've always rated Manfred pretty high. This sort of surprised old Manfred when I interviewed him back in the mid 70's. He was out with the prog like Earthband.
I just played Each And Everyday Another Hair Turns Gray from Mighty Garvey on my show last week.

I have a couple of old Fontana/Mercury era comps, I want to say they were called What A Man and This Is. They gather up some loose ends from eps and singles.

well, i wish i could provide some more insight on the band, but i know that
dave feeny (organ, maybe bass) now runs a recording studio in suburban
detroit called the Tempermill. the most notable thing he's recorded was the
2nd demolition doll rods album on Matador. he's now in a band called Blanche,
which is creepy, Appalachian styled folk/country/no depression that should
not be missed. later...ben

i already wrote that Da Capo is definitely the best record shop i ever saw.
Plato - i don't buy cd's much (almost not at all) so i don't go there often.
most of the bands i like don't release their stuff on cd's anyway.

i used to spend the whole day in Da Capo looking through records, specially
new garage punk bands 7"s and come back home with a whole bunch. and i
really miss that now.

i hate cd's and for me they don't have the magic vinyl has. i also think
that choice of garage punk on cd's is not so great.

yes but if i go somewhere else i always go to record shops - what else can
you do - it's much more fun than going to museums - ha ha ha - records, gigs
and beer what else do you need!!!

Hi Blair et al,

Something appears to have gone wrong with the link to the Irving Plaza
show. Sadly, I cannot gain FTP access to the Pro-Net account at the moment
and check out the file. If there is a demand, I can look into this and
re-post the details to the list. The file is a thirteen minute extract
from the show broadcast by WLIR. A vintage performance by the band and up
there with the "Let's Have A Party" album.

Hi, Ari:
It's "You Don't Mess Around With Jim" - it continues: "...You don't
pee into the wind, You don't fool around with the Old Lone Ranger, and you
don't mess around with Jim". Even though it's not garage - Jim sure had a
way with a lyric. (Damn, that'd be a cool song for someone to do a rockin'
cover of).

John:

I love the Chapter III album, I guess it's volume one
of two? The one with Mister You're a Better Man than
I. What's the other Chap III called? Where can I find
it? Is the one I have available on cd? I have the lp
and it's in good shapre, but I also like to have cds
as back up if, God forbid, the vinyl gets scratched.

I'd love to hear it. I may have been at this show. Say, Blair or anyone
else who may remember, was this event hosted by a Long Island radio station
that staged a somewhat embarrassing "Beach Party" costume or dance segment
between bands? Or was that ANOTHER Lyres Irving Plaza appearance?

Manfred Mann's "There Is A Man" is available on the two-CD set "The Ascent
of Mann" Polygram/Fontana 534 806-2. It came out in '97 so I don't know if
it's still available, if you have to special order it at your fave record
shop.

Well of course there's The Barbarians of "Moulty" and "Are You a Boy or Are
You a Girl" fame... I really thought Def Leppard TOTALLY missed the boat by
not covering "Moulty."

had a hit with
 " Sugar and Spice ".

Hmmm, I've always heard the line to be "You don't spit
in the wind, not "You don't pee in the wind." And I
had this 45 when I was a kid, too, and that's the way
I've always heard it.
