That "Knack" spot WAS pretty cool.
And it was great to hear the Thom McAn "Do Your Own Thing" song again.
That was a REAL song, written by Lieber & Stoller, and recorded by Brook
Benton (as "Do Your Own Thing") on Cotillion 44007.

The reorganization comes after five years of declining sales at Converse and=

turned to overseas workers as a way of cutting costs."Converse is a brand=20

its filing, Converse plans to name Global Brand Marketing as its domestic=20

Okay, a little clarification on Sandy Nelson. I toured with Ronnie Dawson in
the Spring/Summer of 1999. On that tour, we found ourselves with a night off
in Vegas. Our drummer, John Palmer, knew that Nelson lived somewhere in the
area, so we looked him up in the phone book and called him. He invited us to
his house in Boulder City. We drove to his house - very modest, looked a bit
worse for wear - and he invited us in for a chat. He is insane. Really. His
house is a mess. His bathroom is covered with grafitti left by himself and
guests, he has three TVs going at once, he videotapes visitors and events
somewhat randomly, and - he has a "cave" in his yard. Yes, a "cave" that he
himself dug and constructed over the years. He showed us a video of him
playing a snare drum in the cave, but you couldn't really fit a drum set
down there.

I think he still does the occasional coffee house gig, and he played a bit
for us, and his chops seem intact. Re. his infirmity, he did lose his
left(?) leg below the knee in a motorcycle accident, but this occured in the
'70s, after his recording career had tapered off.

Go figure. Joe Viglione sent me a copy of BALLBUSTER magazine. Why wasn't he

list,but no one on the BOMPLIST would ever get away with the IGNORANT SHIT
that is on AMG.(I told a friend this and he asked "What IS AMG?!" Thank
you!!!)AMG is a place where Little Steven of Bruce Springsteen's group is
crossed referenced with Stephen Wright of The Easybeats. And The Easys VOLUME
3(my fave) is described as "nothing outstanding" when it's got hook laden
killers like "Sorry","You Said That" ,and "Going Out Of My Mind" as well as
moody,swoon masterpieces like "Say You Want Me" and "Dance Of The Lovers".
                                                                        Why
is "rock journalism" filled with people who couldn't WRITE their way out of a
paper bag and wouldn't recognize a HOOK if it hit them in the face?! Some
might call that sour grapes,but I think it's like the Dorothy Parker analogy
between writing and sex/prostitution; First you do it for love,then for a few
friends,then you do it for ca$h. I still do it(writing,I mean)for LOVE!!!--

Hey Beau,

What made you think Madrid would be the only place harbouring shitty record
shops? From what I've seen around Europe so far, there's more shitty ones
than 'good ones'. Just think mega-stores... Hell! it takes an effort to
find a good record store and THEN building a kind of relationship
(preferably one YOU feel comfortable with...), earning you the "advantage"
over (MOR) buyers of muzak. Basically, that's what most record shops have
to live on: big selling names, like it or not. There are mouths to be
filled. So, it's a choice: Plato chose a big (and great) store, satisfying
many people, therefore employing about a dozen 'mouths' (or more, correct
me if I'm wrong, Jeroen); Da Capo chose to satisfy a 'selected audience',
meaning that Michel has to work in and for his own shop, at any hour
necessary, employing only a few people. Still, prices don't differ too much
at either store, just the supply: at Plato's I can get just about any
available title, as long as it's new, at Da Capo's I can get a truck-load
of 60's stuff, second-hand stuff (if available) and mostly vinyl. Plato is
my main supplier, which I try to visit every Saturday; Da Capo is my first
choice for vinyl, yet on irregular visits (as temptation is always too
big...).
Oh, BTW, as far as I know, both shops sell new cd's at prices lower than
average. From colleagues, who buy cd's in smaller towns and villages, I
hear prices for new titles, that are sometimes up to 10 guilders higher!

>>There are 2/3 good record shops totally inaccessible for me. <<

What?! Were you banned? What did you do?!

>>I use to wonder how they even survive with those prices but I guess that
even if they sell one record, it saves the whole month. And I am not
talking about rare stuff, but new CD's and Lp's as well, most of which you
can find considerably cheaper 50m away in a less 'cool' store. <<

So: buy at the less 'cool' store, 50 meters, miles or minutes away! Who's
stopping you?! If all you're looking for is cheap thrills...

>>I have several theories about it. The main one is that their clients
10/15 years ago now are all respectable wealthy middle age men who doesn't
mind to pay more because they can feel closer to those middle age owners
(after all they wear the same clothes) and laugh at the younger ones when
their eyes are open wide after seeing the prices. <<

Yeah RIGHT! I see those 'younger ones' spend money like water on shit I
wouldn't even want to get paid FOR to take home with me. Most of the time I
'laugh' at those young ones for their poor taste and the amount of money
they spend on shit that won't last till the end of the year, artistically.
And don't you think I'm limited to 60's stuff: I'll buy just about anything
that touches just about any of my organs (Jeroen would LOVE to tell you all
about my shitty taste...). And don't you fuckin' dare call ME respectable!!
LOL!!! You know what I DO wanna pay for? Respect! Any possibility of
advice! Shop personnel who think with me and for me. Who order me things I
missed, without me having to ask for it (Thanx for ordering that Purple
box, Jeroen!). Personnel that is different from the people who work at a
supermarket (no dis-respect!!), having at least some affinity with what
they do! THAT'S what I wanna pay for! (Jeroen! Je mag dit gebruiken tegen
Rein, als er weer eens onderhandeld moet worden... hihihi).
Again, it's a choice: I could let quantity prevail over quality, I choose
quality and will do so, whatever it takes!

>>Because these gentlemen wouldn't dare to go near another place, afraid
they would be looked at like old hippies. So that's what they're paying
for. <<

Yeah RIGHT again! Not daring to go near another place might have more
medical, psychological reasons? LOL!!! Or might they, like me, just be
happy where they are?

>>But you're being cheated! Like when they sell to you those Munster vinyl
reissues like if it was some kind of rare import and they are released on a
Spanish label!!! Buff, and I nearly worked for one of these shops...(I was
the only one who passed the interview because I was the only one who knew
what power-pop was)<<

Didn't you inquire before you applied for that job? Or do you think there
are shops that sell records out of hobby? Oops! I did it again! Woke up
someone, disturbed an idealist's dream... ;=)

>>Germany is a bit far for me and still I don't know if it would be cheap
because our currency here is the lowest of the lowest. <<

Yep! It wouldn't be worthwhile to go to Germany for your records! Unless
you would choose to save up your money and go only once a year...

>>I use mail order which kills the fun of looking around in a shop but it
is definitely cheaper.<<

I couldn't live without THE RECORD SHOP! As long as I CAN avoid buying mail
order or web, I WILL. I can't imagine my own fingers not doing the
walking...

Basically, I dig your point on prices, I dig your point on record stores
(or mail order, if you like that stuff). I'd LOVE to see prices fall, I'd
love to see all mega-stores go out of biz, I'd love to see all Backstreet
Boys II Men in Black die yesterday etc. I'd love to see the whole world
loving the same music I love... But hey! What fun would we have in my
perfect world? In the end it all comes down to choices: how much and where
do you wanna spend on what?

End of the goddamn fuckin' sermon, once more it's way, way past midnight,
alarm in just over 5 hours...

Jan (listening to "The best of Italo Disco", cheap as hell, yet funky like
fuck!!)

Hi y'all,

My whole room here in the office is empty, except for the cd-player and the
computer... So, here goes for another bunch of dates in the past:

On January 24, in

1956, Sonny Boy Williamson recorded "Don't lose your eye", "I know what
love is all about", "I wonder why", "Let me explain" and "Your imagination"
at Chicago's Chess Studios;
1957, Ivory Joe Hunter recorded "Empty arms", in New York;
1957, Elvis Presley recorded "One night of sin" and "(let me be your) Teddy
bear" at Los Angeles' Radio Recorders;
1964, Walter Horton recorded "Friday night stomp", "Hard hearted woman",
"It's alright", "Wee baby blues" and "Wrinkles" at Chicago's Chess Studios;
1966, the Beach Boys recorded "You still believe in me" at Los Angeles'
Western Studios;
1966, the Byrds recorded "Why?" at Los Angeles' Columbia Studios;
1967, Aretha Franklin recorded "Do right woman - do right man" and "I never
loved a man (the way I love you)" at Sheffield's Muscle Shoals Studios;
1969, the Beatles recorded "Maggie Mae" and "Two of us" at London's Apple
Studios;
1971, the Byrds recorded "Green apple quick step" at Los Angeles' Columbia
Studios;
1974, the Guess Who recorded "Clap for the Wolfman" at New York's A&R
Studios;
1982, the Stranglers recorded a BBC session, playing "The man they love to
hate", "Nuclear device/Genetix" and "Down in the sewer";
1986, Lil' Ed & the Blues Imperials recorded their debut lp "Roughhousin'"
at Chicago's Streeterville Studios. It took 'em just three hours to lay
down one of the finest modern Blues lp's ever. No wonder Ed has that smile
on his face... His uncle J.B. Hutto taught him how to play that biting
slide.

That's all for now, hope the computer will be hooked up tomorrow.....

IMHO 'Soul of Mann' is OK, but not outstanding.

There's some nice organ and vibes on it, it has a jazzy feel, which I like,
but in general the material is not so strong so I prefer other MM albums.
