this may be an odd place to ask but y'all are generally hip, so i'll give it
a shot:

nearly 20 yrs. ago there was a documentary called "in search of phil
spector" which aired on the usa network show, night flight (i think it was
originally made for the bbc). during the film, jeff barry is interviewed
briefly, and he states that "da doo ron ron" could have been written as a
ballad. he then performs a portion of the song as such, accompanying himself
on piano.

he had a great voice, and i thought it was a really interesting
interpretation... so, i've lately been wondering if barry or anyone else
ever recorded "da doo run run" as a ballad (and where i might find it, if
so)?

by the way "in search of phil spector" is very well done, and features a
great segment with the ramones, among many others. it is narrated by rodney
bingenheimer.

thanks, -gopher

Yeah, the Monks' earlier incarnation as the Five Torquays is cross
referenced with the California surf band, the Torquays. AMG is a grand
undertaking but there are hundreds of factual errors and the reviews
often don't even seem to match the corresponding star ratings. And yep,
sometimes I wonder if they've ever even listened to what they're
reviewing.

Subject: More Rutles thoughts

Re the below, re the Rutles "Archaeology" LP:

Um, well I've always admired Neil Innes since the days of the Bonzos - the
guy is tremendously talented and a clever songwriter, but for me the
"followup" Rutles album just didn't cut it, except "Joe Public". I thought
the rest of it veered into cheesy cabaret territory (Here be monsters!).
Whereas the original Rutles LP from 1978 was spot-on and the whole package
(film, book, album) brilliantly executed.

As for the recent "Rutles" Xmas show here in London - well, this was a major
let-down IMO and as a fellow audience member remarked to me afterwards, was
"akin to watching The Grumbleweeds" (a low-grade UK cabaret act). The only
members of the original band present were Innes and "Barry Wom" (drummer) -
the restofem were faceless session musicians, swaying gently in the breeze
as might the Shadows if you went to see them today. Granted, this show
obviously wasn't aimed at a rock-n-roll audience, but I think it was when
they wheeled out an uncomfortable-looking Barry Cryer (comedy writer) and
then (get this) Nigel Planer, STILL playing his "Neil" in the Young Ones
character, both to "do turns", that all credibility went out the window. I
squirmed at that point.

Ho hum.

Re this - Manfred Mann "Soul of Mann" LP

This is an instrumental LP, I think Paul Jones had left the band by the time
it was released or else he just had a day off (!). You'll need to dig that
late-60s jazz-rock crossover feel coz that's what it's about here: Lots of
tenor, vibes and Hammond, backed by the Manfreds rhythm section, mostly
playing covers I think. Since the original album was only about 30 mins
long, the CD reissue (digipack) you mention included both the mono and
stereo versions of the LP.

I could fix up a CDR copy for a trade if you can't score it locally

This reminds me of something they had at, I think, the old Ritz (on 11th
St.) around '88 or so: Joey Ramone's Glitter-Acid Rock'n'Roll Trash Ball
Extravaganza... Uh, or something like that. I remember The Waldos being on
the bill, and I think The Chesterfield Kings might've graced the stage, as
well, tho' I wouldn't swear to it. But the funny part was the "Slut Beauty
Pageant". A bunch of girls from the audience getting on stage and getting
down to skimpy parts of their outfit. The audience was supposed to vote a
winner. Meanwhile, a girl from the audience who hadn't been picked (and was
outdoing them all) made her way to the stage just as they were giving the
award to a girl who proclaimed upon winning, "I'm not really a slut". The
new one seemed more than happy to be known as such. Then came the guy from
the side of the stage who seemed to be pulling his pants down as he came
out. YEESH!

Soul of Mann was released when Paul Jones had left Manfred Mann, but it is a
compilation of tracks recorded when he was still in. It contains some songs
from earlier albums + all of the 'Instrumental Asylum' EP + a few unreleased
ones.

For some reason the album contains one vocal track "L.S.D."

Despite my fondness for my home of Ann Arbor, MI (stomping grounds of the
Rationals, MC5 and Stooges), we also have to take credit for the cheesy
All Music Guide, which is headquartered here. But dig this - it was
started some years back by one Michael Erlewine, a founding member of
local garage blues band The Prime Movers. Between the Iguanas and the
Stooges, none other than Iggy Pop beat the skins for them. There is a
photo of Iggy as a Prime Mover on the web, along with Erlewine's account
of their career:

http://home.att.net/~s.m.geer/bands.htm

(it takes a while to load and you have to scroll way down to see the
photo - but the other info on the page is quite interesting for Michigan
60s Rock fans)

A couple of years ago a local newspaper printed an article on the AMG, and
described how Erlewine was basically screwed out of the business he'd
founded and now is no longer involved. From what I hear about the AMG, it
relies on hungry post-college folks who are willing to work for very
little to get a music writing gig - which probably explains the uneven
quality.

I don't know, I ask that all the time. You could also ask why is the music
business so sleazy, why do people take jobs as PR people hyping horrible
bands that don't have a snowball's chance in hell of getting anywhere, why
do major labels send me awful CDs Federal Express Priority Overnight Mail,
or how do terrible bands like At The Drive-In become super popular within a
matter of months, seemingly coming out of nowhere, while other great and
cool bands thrive in obscurity their entire existence? The rock business is
a very strange one!

Hi,
I don't know if this was mentioned yet or not - "Iron Man" by Black
Sabbath is a comic (if that counts).
Also,Joe Satriani used the "Silver Surfer" on the cover of his "Surfing
with the alien" album.
 Okay,they're BOTH comics....but I like them. : )

Well, since I blew the left front speaker in my car
while listening to "Nuggets" as I delivered pizza, it
helps to listen to anything mono, since my balance is
now all mixed up. That comes in handy as with my
abundance of '60s beat and garage, I have quite a
selection of crunchy mono rock and roll that sounds
the same no matter what speaker.

I drive about 6-8 hours a night as a delivery driver,
so I make sure to bring a good number of comps along
with me (I have a Sony Walkman that I hook up to my
cassette deck). Right now, I happen to have "The
Hollies At Abbey Road 1963-66" in my player. I
especially like stuff that puzzles my coworkers as I
pull in from a delivery. One night I came back blaring
"Paralyzed" by the Legendary Stardust Cowboy, and you
should have seen one of the guys looking around for
whoever was doing all that screaming.

By the way, the song that did in my speaker was "So
What!!" by the Lyrics!

Don't forget "Sylvette" by the Creation, which is
essentially an instrumental version of "Leaving Here"
which was left unreleased until the Retroactive set a
couple years ago.

The Who's version of "Leaving Here" is one of the big
highlights of the "BBC Sessions" disc.

I like the song simply because it's easy to play along
with no matter who does it....

Probably the reason people are asking about Ram Jam is
because "Black Betty" is included on that new TV comp
"Goin' South" (which includes some questionable tracks
like "Rocky Mountain Way" by Joe Walsh...I mean maybe
he was with the Eagles, but he's certainly not
southern rock...how far south _is_ Cleveland?). My
interest in Ram Jam goes only so far in that founder
Bill Bartlett was the guitarist for the Lemon
Pipers...which makes two Ohioans on a southern rock
comp?

Speaking of Ohio musicians, it was a shame to hear
about Jerry Wick from Gaunt. I wasn't too familiar
with Gaunt, although I liked what I had heard. I have
a friend who counted Wick as an acquaintance. I
haven't talked to him so I have to wonder what his
take on Wick's death is.

It's not by Manfred Mann on the soundtrack LP? That's weird, because on the
label of the 45 it says "From the Cerberus Films Inc. Production 'You Are
What You Eat'"...

I've got their single "For A Long Time" on a tape comp
someone made for me and if that's representative of
their sound then I say they are about due for a
compilation.

Sundazed did the honors for We The People and Big Beat
just put out their Nightcrawlers comp, so it seems
natural that some likeminded label should cement the
Tropics as the missing link in the trinity of '60s
garage music from Florida.

I don't have my copy of "From The Blue Angel" with me,
but I believe "Come On Home Baby" was an Escorts
original, written I believe by their manager. The
Escorts later singles all had a sort of Motown feel to
them, like "Head To Toe" and "Night Time" (the latter
written by Liverpudlian Paddy Chambers).

The Escorts first single of "Dizzy Miss Lizzy" could
be mistaken for an American teenage garage band with
just the right snotty vocals. The flipside, "All I
Want Is You" was also an Escorts original, later
covered by the Swinging Blue Jeans.

I highly recommend their Edsel comp "From The Blue
Angel," although it only contains 12 songs, all are
killer Merseybeat.

There's a group in need of reissuing! I've heard so
many of their tracks spread around. "Stop! Get A
Ticket" of course is now a Nuggets classic, and I have
their Date 45 of the same complete with stock company
sleeve and jukebox title strips. The flipside "First
Tell Me Why" is rather pedestrian folk rock.

Two Clefs songs really blow me away. "So I'll Try" is
on Sony Special Products disc "Have A Nice Life" and
has great harmonies. It's so great, I will forgive
them for nicking the style from "I Still Love You" by
the Vejtables.

I am still regretting my reluctance to pay $12 for the
single of "It Won't Be Long" b/w "Play With Fire" at a
record show. Killer versions of the Stones hit and a
relatively obscure Beatles album track. The latter is
probably even better than the original. Somebody else
snatched up that single at some point and I'm sure
they're enjoying the hell out of it...

How many Clefs Of Lavendar Hill singles actually came
out?? And what is the likelihood of stuff in the
vaults?

Is there ANY word on Get Hip's compilation "The
Mus-I-Col Records Story," covering the '60s Columbus,
Ohio label?? I've been hearing about it for several
years now, and it was supposedly close to ready for
release. 50% unreleased tracks, 75% from the master
tapes. I even sent some copies of local newspaper ads
for several of the bands featured.

So far, I've heard nothing about it coming out.

Hi Dave:

Count me in for an official Tropics comp. I have a
rough cd of twelve Tropics tunes, including For a Long
Time, but the quality is not great. I also bought a
Tropics sampler from Tropics' bassist Charlie Souza at
his website, but it's all rerecorded stuff. Not bad,
but not so great. If you want a tape of what I have,
which I think is about all they ever recorded, let me
know off list.

Subject: Re: Record prices in the Netherlands

Vanya,

OK, so we agree on the fact that records/CDs are too expensive
these days. As Jan stated there are a number of
economic/socio/political reasons for this that differ from country to
country, same goes for completely different retail systems around
the world (FI; US stores can return their unsold stock to suppliers,
something that is definitely not the case over her), but you don't
wanna go into detail here, fine, simple conclusion; different
countries = different economies = different prices (once the global
village becomes fact this will obviously all be in the past and we'll
all be at the mercy of Sony and BMG).

One thing tho', and that was what really offended me in your first
post, was the idea the "certain shops" mark up their prices in an
attempt to rake in the money because their costumers had little or
no choice in obtaining their records elsewhere and hinting to the
fact that such was common practice at my favorite record shop.
This is definitely NOT the case.

Obviously the entire record bizz ain't no charity (far from it), and as
stated before there are mouths to be fed/rent to be paid, etc etc.
As for my own shop; yep, we sell a lot of crap (but not THAT
much), but that same crap makes it possible to also stock a large
amount of blues and soul music that's hard to find anywhere else
these days, it also provides a home for lost souls like Jan, and
maybe one day it will lead him away from the evils of symphonic
rock and other such nonsense that he insists on buying even when
warned beforehand.

Clear enough ?,

Jeroen

I listened a bit to the Cousin Brucie show on Real Audio. The Gillette
commercial's music reminded me of the Shocking Blue. Great organ! "He's got
the knack/he's got the Knack/The light new razor from Gillette/long, tapered
handle/opens and shuts with a twist/shave with the flick of the wrist".
The Hai Karate one was funny, too, with the ultra serious narrator saying
"Hai Karate after shave and cologne presents: sounds in self defense, or,
how to make scary sounding noises in case your girl loses her head over your
Hai Karate. When your girl clutches at you at a disco, wedding reception or
square dance. Use in conjunction with the printed instructions inside every
box of Hai Karate. (Martial arts Bruce Lee type noises follow).. Hai Karate
- - be careful how you use it!"
How about the ad for Carnation Instant Breakfast where they say "Put the
magic ingredient in your day - THC, Take Home Carnation" (are they implying
what I THINK they are??).
News bits on Vietnam War and Appollo pre launch exercises were interesting
too. Cousin Brucie seems a little Manic! Crazy Eddie style.
