Hi y'all,

Slowly getting settled-ish on my new location, unpacked all my stuff, mail
seems to work, Motorhead in the (not so) background, what else can one wish
for? Ah, a nice cup of pretty good espresso and a smoke... Back in a
minute...
There! Coffee n' Smokes n' Noise! Sounds pretty perfect, doesn't it? It
starts to feel that way...

Right! Back to the regular program: Today & Tomorrow (not a new Metal
band!), yester-century:

On January 26, in

1969, the Beatles recorded "Dig it" at London's Apple Studios;
1971, James Brown recorded "I cried", "Soul power" and "Spinning wheel" at
Washington's Rodel Studios. "Soul power" came in three parts, "Spinning
wheel" in two.

On January 27, in

1958, LaVern Baker recorded "Gimme a pigfoot", in New York;
1965, Astrud Gilberto recorded "Agua de beber" and "Meditation" at Los
Angeles' RCA Studios;
1965, the Remains recorded "Ain't that her", "All good things", "Say you're
sorry" and "Why do I cry" at New York's CBS Studios;
1966, Bob Dylan recorded "I'll keep it with mine" at New York's CBS
Studios;
1968, Lavender Grove recorded "Lavender Grove" at R.G. Jones Studios in
Morden;
1969, the Gods recorded "Hey bulldog" at London's Abbey Road. Two of these
Gods were Ken Hensley and Lee Kerslake. Hensley, after the Gods broke up,
founded Uriah Heep in 1970. They had some problems with drummers, so
Kerslake joined in 1971, becoming their fifth (!) drummer. The Gods
released three singles and two lp's from 1968 to 1970. Two other
(non-recording) members were Mick Taylor, founder of the Gods, but leaving
them in 1967 to first join John Mayall and later the Rolling Stones and
Greg Lake, who left in 1968 for King Crimson, to become a member of
Emerson, Lake & Palmer in 1970. Oh my Gods!
1971, the Persuaders recorded "Thin line between love and hate", in New
York;
1971, Wilson Pickett recorded "Don't knock my love" at Sheffield's Muscle
Shoals Studios;
1972, the Free recorded "Child", "Soldier boy" and "Travellin' man" at
London's Island Studios. All three would sooner or later be redone for
inclusion in the "Free at last" lp. These three are to be found on "Songs
of yesterday".

That's all for now!

L8er,
Jan (Everything louder than everyone else!)

PS. Jeroen! Do you actually remember when was the last time I bought
anything symphonic..... LOL!!!

recommend a really great sounding cd and cassette playing/recording blaster?
I want one with cassette to cassette and cd to cassette capabilities, but
also one that records really well (preferably stereo) with mic input AND
condensor mic...
Thanks folks!

Hi again y'all,

Guess yesterday you were all dying to know what happened in the past and I
let you down.... hahaha
Anyway, I didn't write all that shit for myself, so here goes:

On January 25, in

1955, Little Walter Jacobs recorded "My babe" and "Thunderbird" at
Chicago's Chess Studios;
1960, Jerry Lee Lewis ended a five-day recording session at Memphis' Sun
Studios. It were days well spent: the Bear Family Box holds no less than 22
selections, recorded during those five days. Titles? Alright, alright! Here
goes, alphabetically, of course: "As long as I live" (2), "Baby, baby bye
bye" (2), "Bonnie B." (2), "Don't drop it", "Gettin' in the mood", "Great
speckled bird" (2), "Hound dog", "I can't help it", "I get the blues when
it rains" (2), "In the mood", "Keep your hands off of it (birthday cake)",
"Mexicali Rose" (2), "Old black Joe" (2), "What'd I say" and "Your cheatin'
heart". (2) obviously means, that there's two versions...
1966, the Byrds recorded "Eight miles high" at Los Angeles' Columbia
Studios;
1967, James Brown recorded "Kansas City" and "Need your love so bad" at New
York's Beltone Studios;
1968, Cuby & the Blizzards recorded "The sunshine of your shadow" and
"Crying tears", in Hilversum, Holland. The two songs were released on a 45;
1968, the Sandpebbles recorded "The love man" and "Up nd down" at New
York's Bell Sound Studios;
1968, Big Mama Thornton recorded "Ball 'n' chain" and "Wade in the water",
in Los Angeles;
1968, Mark Wirtz & his Orchestra recorded "(he's our dear old) Weatherman"
at London's Abbey Road. The song is to be found on "Psychedelia at Abbey
Road";
1969, the Beatles recorded "For you blue" at London's Apple Studios;
1991, Paul McCartney recorded his "Unplugged" cd at London's Limehouse
Studios. Love him or hate him, this still sounds like tons of fun were had
by all involved.

There!

L8er,
Jan (still quite noisy....)

Bikini May Shake And Stir Auction

LONDON - The white bikini that left James Bond shaken and stirred in one of the most memorable scenes from the British spy film series has been put up for sale.

Swiss-born actress Ursula Andress shot to stardom when she emerged from the sea wearing the white cotton bikini in the 1962 movie Dr. No, the first 007 film.

This bikini made me into a success," Andress, now 64, said.

The actress decided to sell the two-piece after she discovered it in the attic at her home, the Daily Telegraph reported on Friday.

The bikini is expected to fetch up to $75,000 when it is auctioned at a sale of Bond memorabilia at Christie's in London on Feb. 14, the paper said.

bugged me, but maybe that's just from knowing that the extreme mix was
intentional. it's weird in a car though, b/c you have to adjust the
speaker balance! depending on what side of the car your on, there's too much
voice or too much velvets (is there such a thing?).....

Unless you have the mono mix, which I actually prefer of that album.
Another extreme is "The Murder Mystery" on the 3rd LP, which has two
distinct different things going on in each speaker, so if you nix one
channel, it's like a different song! Another example of extreme stereo is
the Blue Cheer. One time I had a rented car in L.A., and bought some cheap
tapes to listen to at Tower, among them a "Best of Blue Cheer" cassteee.
Well, turned out one of the speakers was blown, so when I had the Blue Cheer
on, it was all echoey vocals, bass and drums! It sounded really bizarre!

<: Re: Ramones On Fox (1/24)

Most of the Ramones oriented stuff was at the beginning of "grounded for
life", involving the Ramones playing a festival in Staten Island.
(Obviously this was pre-farewell tour, which they were good enough to
mention) >

Actually, what they said was it was one of their farewell tours "We go to
all their farewell tours," says one dude "You never know, it might be their
last!"

<nyway the parents drag the kids and one of them gets in
trouble for not having a school project done because they went to see
the Ramones instead.
  Dad goes to argue with the Nun (it's a catholic school) and the kid
gets suspended for a week.
   Probably the funniest bit is the Nun arguing about the detoriation of
the Ramones over the years with the dad.
  Nun: "They can't tell the difference between "Rockaway Beach" and
"Rock'n' Roll High school">

That part was pretty funny. She makes a comment about the "stylistic
limitations of the Ramones" or something like that.

And bringing this full circle, the first Ramones album (original mix, not
the later CD mixes) is very extreme stereo. All bass in left channel,
guitar in right, drums and vocals center. Many a bass player have learned
bass by cranking the balance to the left to get just the bass. The Seattle
band Head did the same thing (as a tribute to the brudders) on their first
few releases!!

Subject: Re: Gentrys/Aphrodite's Child

In Bomp Digest 59, "Boldface" compares an Aphrodite's Child song to a
latter-day Gentrys cut ("I Need Love"). No, "I Need Love" ain't exactly "Keep
On Dancing," but if you have a taste for schizoid, trend-jumping rock, get
CINNAMON GIRL, a Gentrys compilation on Collectables that spotlights their
years on the revived Sun label (circa 1970-71). By this time, only future
wrestling promoter Jimmy Hart was left over from the 1965 edition of the
band, and Sun (now owned by Shelby Singleton) decided to release something
other than Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis reissues. It's plain to see that
both Sun and the Gentrys were throwing things against the wall, trying to see
what would stick. Literally, the Gentrys don't know whether they want to be
the Grass Roots or Johnny Winter, moving between AM pop and FM rock in a
heartbeat. Their versions of Cat Stevens' "Wild World" and Neil Young's
"Cinnamon Girl" were regional hits (probably in backwater communities where
neither Neil nor Cat were superstars just yet).

The centerpiece is "Love You All Of My Life," a dippy pop ballad that
features running drunken commentary from a (presumably) fortyish lady with
a thick Southern accent. You practically expect her to say "kiss mah
grits!"...she doesn't, but she does command an off-mike (male) interviewer
(Hart?) to "feel mah leg...come awn, FEEL MAH LEG!!...you SCARED?" There's
also a toilet flushing at the end, which might be someone's opinion of the
tune. Strangely enough, this oddity isn't alluded to in the liner notes.
Anybody know the story behind this?

It was obvious that both Sun Records and the Gentrys were made for each
other--two Memphis institutions at the end of the line, barely croaking. For
all that, this is a fine, fine CD. Don't expect this to be a late-blooming
garage manifesto ala the Rationals LP on Crewe, or the Woolies' BASIC ROCK LP
on Spirit---yes, it's a fading 1960's band that the music industry left
behind, trying to adapt to the changing times, and not exactly succeeding.
This is still worth hearing, in a perverse, trainwreck way. Sun did release a
self-titled album in 1970, but get the CD reissue---some of the better tracks
didn't make that original album. Including the scandalous "Love You All Of My
Life."

I didn't make the show as (a) my niece was having her 2nd b-day party and

I will, however, be sure to make the 2/10 gig w/The Insomniacs and The Gold

My guess is that it is in Austin for a couple of reasons: 1) to breathe
some life back into it, to give it some fresh appeal and 2) Tim Kerr,
close friend of Dave Crider and Estrus house producer, lives in Austin.
Austin is a great place for this sort of thing due to the various and
sundrry amenities for out-of-town visitors, which quite frankly were
missing in Bellingham (though you could always make the trek down to
Seattle). I would like to see some local bnads as well as non-Estrus
bands, but as Blair says, this is Dave's show. I think it will still be a
fun time for those of you who make it down (in late May it's warm enough
to take advantage of the area lakes for swimming if you're the outdoorsy
type and can actually make it out of bed before noon). I'm pretty sure
that there will be lots of "satellite" shows and in-stores going on as
well. And, Blair, yes, there willl be BBQ but by all means don't forget
about Tex Mex!

 And bringing this full circle, the first Ramones album (original mix, not
the later CD mixes) is very extreme stereo. All bass in left channel,
guitar in right, drums and vocals center. Many a bass player have learned
bass by cranking the balance to the left to get just the bass. The Seattle band Head did the same thing (as a tribute to the brudders) on their first
few releases!!

Ah...the Addrisi's...something I know about. The Addrisi Brothers
Don and Richard ["Dick"]) Addrisi recorded singles for Del-Fi in
the late Fifties/early Sixties, then became talent scouts for Valiant,
who signed the Association. The Addrisi's wrote songs for the
group, including "Never My Love," which is right Paul McCartney's
"Yesterday" as BMI's top-played single of all time. The Addrisi's
also continuing their performing career, scoring a few hits in the 70's
with "Slow Dancin' Don't Turn Me On" and "Ghost Dancer". Don
passed away, but Richard is alive and well. I talk to him now and
then...

The Hollies' "Evolution" is also great if you wanna figure out their
harmonies or work on yours.

"Loudmouth" and "I Don't Wanna Go Down To The Basement" were my fave Ramones
tunes to play bass to, using the channel separation. Does anybody else dig
the Flesheaters' cover of "Basement"? What a killer.

Does anyone know if there's any truth to the rumor
that the Clefs heard the song performed live by the
Talula Babies (aka Baskerville Hounds) of Cleveland
and recorded it, taking the writing credit as their
own? This was a possibility stated in the liner notes
for one of the Ohio volumes of "Highs In The
Mid-Sixties," but the same one that had a New York
band (the Denims) pegged as an Akron band...

Dave

P.S. I also think "Stop -- Get A Ticket" is the
weakest track I've heard from the group.

The pre-"Green Tambourine" Lemon Pipers 45 was called
"Quiet Please" and I think "78 R.P.M." was the name of
the flipside. I've never heard it (is it even comped?)
but I do have a copy of the Prism single "Just Let Her
Go" by Ivan & The Sabres, the Dayton group led by
future LP lead vocalist Ivan Browne. It may have even
been the same personnel that became the Lemon Pipers.
Straight pop songs with a hint of psych, but with the
unmistakable voice that would later sing of green
tambourines, jelly jungles of orange marmalade, and
the niceness of rice on any day. :)

<< Another extreme is "The Murder Mystery" on the 3rd LP, which has two

the Blue Cheer.

It sounded really bizarre! >>

    ok, i heard a great (awful?) example of this today at work, so perfectly
typifying all the horrors of the lovin spoonful mix i almost posted from
work, but i was too paranoid about getting busted (one of THOSE kinda
jobs...) - anyway, i was listening to the oldies station at my desk and got
an earful of roy head's "treat her right" that was all echoey vocals & a
disproportionately LOUD horn section. zal yanovsky is rolling over in his
grave...and he's still ALIVE.

    i scored the coolest book today (actually two, one for me & one a
birthday present for a photographer friend) - a great big. fat coffee table
book of david bailey photographs from 1964 to 1969. there are some absolutely
AMAZING pictures in this book, some gorgeous portraits of a very young
marianne faithfull, the stones "out of our heads" LP cover & outtakes from
the session, the "between the buttons" cover & outtakes, great brian jones
shots & probably the best (with the possible exception of the avedon summer
67 photos) portraits of lennon & mccartney ever...very cool the way he shot
john & paul together, like mirror reflections of each other. i am physically
restraining myself from pulling pages outta this and getting them framed. oh
yeah, there is a totally cool punkish january 1966 shot of the who lookin
like thugs. very cool!!!
    does anybody know of any website w/ bailey photos from this era?? this
stuff is screaming "desktop pattern"....
