I've always thought Del Shannon's 1963 "Keep Searchin' (Follow The Sun)"

Hi y'all,

That time of the day again... Let me take a minute of your time, and tell
you what happened in the past:

On January 30, in

1956, Elvis Presley recorded "Blue suede shoes", "My baby left me",
"One-sided love affair" and "So glad you're mine" at New York's RCA
Studios;
1959, James Brown recorded "Bewildered" at New York's Beltone Studios;
1969, the Beatles played their famous rooftop concert, on top of their own
Apple Studios.

Now, that didn't hurt a bit, did it!

Alan, You have the Phillips recorder if I remember, so just hook up some
cables from the " tape out " jacks on your amp/reciever to the "analog in "
jacks on the recorder, and the " tape in " jacks on the amp/reciever to the "
analog out " jacks on your recorder. In other words, it's the same as hooking
up a tape deck/recorder to your amp/reciever, it just happens to be a CD unit
instead of a tape deck.
Also inrelation to the auto track thing, I find on my Phillips, I have to
manually put in the increments between songs, so yeah you too will most
likely have to hit
" track " after each song, the automatic track function just doesn't really
work all that well.

a loud enough signal to record. It's very quiet, and the manual level

adjustment on the CDR machine, even at its highest setting, it's still too

quiet. So, do I need a preamp then? I figure that the turntable usually goes

into my JVC digital receiver, thus getting sound boosted that way. Going

directly into the CD recorder, it has no single boost. The thing I can't

figure out is that the tape deck goes directly into the recorded, too, so

why doesn't it need a signal boost? If I do need a preamp, does anyone have

any recommendations?

Actually, Del Shannon's records are great. The Brits loved him. The 67 LP
isn't a masterpiece like "Would You Believe", but studio versions of a few of
Billy's songs are only available here. It's worth owning. Better than most
but not as good as some. Also, make sure to pick up Billy Nicholl's

I've never heard this album...but I have heard FURTHER ADVENTURES OF CHARLES
WESTOVER, his 1968 LP...Del sounded a lot more convincing doing psych than
Tommy Roe (PHANTASY) or the Four Seasons (GENUINE IMITATION LIFE GAZETTE).

Well, I don't know if you could call these "thrift" finds, but a local CD
shop has been having a $5 out-of-business sale, from which I found: the Good
Rats (reissue of their Kapp album on the One Way label); a Gary "U.S." Bonds
compilation (I already have an earlier reissue on Legrand, but this
particular disc---on Rhino---has much more songs that I don't have than
actually do); DOWNEY BLUES (great compilation of sixties blues singles on
Downey, the label that originally gave us the Surfaris' "Wipe Out"); THE
BLUESVILLE YEARS, VOL. 11 (compilation of blues acts, again from the early
60's, who recorded for Bluesville, a subsidiary of Prestige, the jazz label);
a compilation of rare Sun country on AVI; the Greenhornes' GUN FOR YOU; and
finally, a collection of singles from 1995-96 released by Loverly, a Memphis
label caught in the crossfire between rockabilly, blues, garage, and general
avant-garde weirdness, ala Alex Chilton, Lorette Velvette, Tav Falco, Jim
Dickinson, etc. Although only Velvette appears on this disc, just about
everybody featured on these Loverly comps (there are three in all) are
planted in this tradition. I'd actually rather hear this stuff rather than
some of the soundalike, psuedo-hardcore material that Estrus has been
churning out, endlessly.

Hey Bompers and Bompettes! This is gonna be grr-8. The Cry Babies,Steve
Aquino as well as being famed for The Lyres tremolo drenched "Help You Ann"
is also a veteran of The Shambles circa 1987 along with The Lyres'
bassist,Rick Coraccio and drummer,Paul Murphy. The Shambles did a fab cover
of The Shags "Don't Press Your Luck".
                                        And the Cry Babies singer,Artie
Snidermen and Steve Aquino, before The Shambles were in a popular Worcester
area band,The Actions. I've yet to hear any recordings of this combo, but if
you are nice to fellow Bomper,Coraccio, maybe he'll turn you on to The
Shambles.
The Downbeat Five deliver a cool garage/surf elixir. Of
course,The Lyres are not to be missed. Wonder if they'll do "She Told Me
Lies","Don't Shoot Me Down","Made My Bed(Gonna Lie In It)",or all of the
above. Last night,I dusted off the archives and found a Lyres review in one
of my zines,GROOVY from August 1983. "The night The Lyres played,Maxwell's
August 6 was a real spiritual experience. Seeing The Lyres last winter at the
Peppermint Lounge was one of the things that reminded me why I started the
fanzine thing to begin with. I missed their last Danceteria gig with the
Neats due to circumstances beyond my control.(maybe I had a PSYCHOTIC
REACTION!!!) So,here I am seeing them again and Monoman hasn't changed-not in
spirit and I'm back at the Rat and suddenly it's 7 years ago. He's amazing-no
more "mommy's make up" or fluffy pink bedroom slippers(note:like in the early
DMZ days)-no more androgyny-just a funny t-shirt that cracked me up all
night-"Buzzy Roast Beef"(I passed this place when coming into Boston Nov
6,2000. Twilight zone music please.)Yet,Monoman's voice is more powerful than
ever and his energy is still manic.
The Lyres had the audience grooving.
There was that magic connection between them and the crowd and the dancing
people moved together like one body. The Lyres played faves like "100
CCs",their Sounds Interesting Single "Don't Give It Up Now"/"How Do You
Know", my fave, their incomparable cover of New Colony Six's "I Confess".a
slow, torchy "Tired Of Waiting"(Kinks),and the dance craze anthem,"Nobody But
Me"(Human Beinz).
Though a fan of 60s psychedelia like the Chcolate Watch
Band,Monoman's singing comes across very rhythm and blues
oriented-soulful,emotive,and full throttle. It's inspiring to see a true
believer in action!"--Nancy Neon

I haven't seen the Collectables thing. Does it have the same front cover as the LP? That's one of my favorite cheesy album covers....with the poor betrayed "nice girl" discovering her "cheater" with two Nasty Floozies on his arm.

That bastard!

Inside....one of the few one-hit wonders whose LP was about as good as the 45 was. "Cheater" is definitely the stand-out tune (Like a revved-up Deon Jackson song) but the whole album is good. I am such a sucker for that sound........

The one with "Mister You're A Better Man Than I" is their first,
simply called _Manfred Mann Chapter Three_. The second album
is called _Manfred Mann Chapter Three Volume Two_. Both
were issued on CD in 1979 by Bronze Records. The copies I
have are from Germany. There were plans for a third album.
According to the liner notes for _Glorified Magnified_, the song
"Messin'" was written for that never released third Chapter Three
album.

You gotta hear the original version by Benny Spellman. I found it on a fab Italian Charley comp of New Orleans stuff.

Funny, I just sat down and learned "Alive But Dead" from this Shannon/ELO session. I've had a tape of it for ages. I can't even remember who gave it to me. Too bad they never
followed up on this combination. The best part is hearing ELO playing it simple. It sounds more like the Idle Race than what you might think of ELO.

There's been some good finds in the thrifts lately. I scored a big chunk of someone's early 70's collection. A few things I'm not wild about, but at a quarter each, and they
were in good enough shape; couldn't pass. The best deal was at a Pawn Shop in Billings. Kazzer asked the guy how much for her stack of cds. There was some debate about if the
Mudhoney March Of Fuzz was a single disc or a double (twice the price) One clerk said to the other "is this any good? Have You ever heard of this band?" No? Okay, it's only
$4!

Subject: LEGEND CITY RECALL

Hello fans and especially any writers out there:

Among our January releases, we had pretty bad mishap with "LEGEND CITY
(Ferocious mid-60s gems from the vaults of Phoenix's Viv-Deborah recording
studios 1965-1967)"

The LP print had lettering added by the printers, knocked out of our art,
that stated "HEAD FRONT." a printer term. After their admission that they
messed up, they arranged for the LPs to be shipped back from our distributor
in San Francisco to the printing/pressing plant in Downey. Now we had to
postpone the entire release from January 22 to Feb 26 (note, we always
release both LP and CD formats at the same time.)

Now, on to the CD, manufactured by an entirely different company. We
discovered that the last three songs were left off the CD, the fault of the
guy transferring the 1630 to glass master. So, now, we have to get the discs
recalled from San Francisco, the discs remanufactured in Georga and the
parts assembled in Santa Moncia. Fortunately, the place that printed the CD
paper did a wonderful job.

WRITERS, WE'VE ALREADY SENT MOST OF THE PROMOS OFF, PLEASE WAIT TO REVIEW
THIS DISC UNTIL YOU GET OUR PACKAGE OF FEBRUARY RELEASES including Tony the
Tyger Presents Fuzz Flakes and Shakes Volumes 4 & 5, and the
long-anticipated legit reissue of the legendary surf album by THE AVENGERS
VI. We will put the new version in your package.

Thanks. I won't apologize because this was not my fault!

They have a new drummer too.
Mike Sessa from the Streetwalkin' Cheetahs is now drumming
for them. He's a great drummer, so I'm sure that
has a lot to do with their playing rising up a
level or two.

I just wanted to say that I once again witnessed the incredible aural
hurricane that is the Bellrays last night here in Seattle, and once again
they exceeded my already high expectations. The new bassist is one of the
most badass bassists I've ever seen! Talk about an almost relgious
experience, and one of the few times I've see a band placed second on the
bill before the headliners (after the Blowup and before the Briefs, both of
whom were way cool) get two encores!!

Yowza Folks:
Well, thanks to the brand new Mojo magazine I felt validated in my past
love for none other than those boogie hair boys Status Quo. The usual
brand of mixed messages this week and of course a mini-set of QUO!
classics. They were ONE DIMENSIONAL! THEY ROCKED! All y'all must know
that Monday FEBRUARY 12TH is my FUNDRIVE show and if'n I don't raise a
significant amount of dough they may start asking questions about me and
the company I keep around the station. Please try and support us with
your pledge DURING MY SHOW! I'm counting on all you high (!) rollers to
come through in the crunch. PS I believe that on the George Harrison
track that he says "Beware of ABCKO" in one verse. Any takers on this?
