**********Hey Linda Linda
Our university station here in Winnipeg (CKUW/CJUM) are nearly like that
only substitute shoegazer indie pop with The Dead. It seems to come down
to the average age of the dj and where they are at in their peer group.
These kids seem to have grabbed onto these boring, post grunge grinders
as spokespeople for their disenfranchised lives. I dunno. Are they that
unhappy. Do they ever just want to shake their asses and freak out dance
party mess? That'll cheer any body UP! They can all go fish as far as I
care. I pity them actually.

hey groovers

here are a few vinyl items i have going spare, most of these are brand new
review copies so have only been played once, all have some bomp content,
trades preferred but will always accept cash!
email me off-list.

slow slushy boys "boogaloo" l.p. (larsen) - french beat combo recorded at
toe rag in glorious mono
silver bullet s/t l.p. (clearspot) - swedish punk band i think! phalanxes of
raging guitars and shouty  vocals
buff medways "fire" 45 - billy childish's new project, sounds not unlike
all the old projects, he does two hendrix covers
various artistes "beat at cinecitta" - italian film music from the 60s on
white vinyl
various artistes "beserkely chartbusters" - 1975 comp of beserkely pop
singles, jonathan richman greg kihn etc
various artistes "sin alley volume one" - 1950s loony tunes with a distinct
rockin flavor
various artistes "stomping vol 27" - crazy 60s r+b - quite good - includes
big maybelle's take on "96 tears"
olivia tremor control "jumping fences" 12-inch single of quasi-freeform
musique concrete (ugh) and one powerpopish tune

more to follow when i get round to 'em!
anyone wanna save these from the thrift store !?

I'm interested in the following:

various artistes "beat at cinecitta" - italian film music from the 60s on
white vinyl

various artistes "sin alley volume one" - 1950s loony tunes with a distinct
rockin flavor

various artistes "stomping vol 27" - crazy 60s r+b - quite good - includes

Do you have a want list for trade material? If not,
how much for the three?

Thanks!

That's great! "Smells Like Holy Spirit" and "Jesus is a Cool Dude" (sung

"Cause I'm a Walrus".

Follow the bouncing bible and sing along:

Sitting in my zoo cage
driven by fleshly desire
swimming and diving
hanging out with penguins
man, why do you think
that I get so glum

(chorus) I can't get born-again
I can't get born-again
'cause I'm a walrus !

Three Billy Nicholls songs are on the Del Shannon-The Liberty Years CD.
According to the liner notes Shannon did a session with Andrew Oldham and
Immediate Record artists Twice As Much & Billy Nicholls both contributed
songs. The LP wasn't released until 1978 "And The Music Plays On" (Sunset
50412)
Shannon's version are great by the way.

"I read a bit in this month's MOJO about Del Shannon recording an lp in 1967
in London with Billy Nichols, Steve Marriott and other such musicians on
it.. the article called the lp "a big brother to Billy Nichols' "Would You
Believe". As a fan of "Would You Believe," I'm wondering what this Shannon
record is like... all I know of him is "Runaway".. and Del going British
pop-psych seems like an odd marriage"

Same guy, he's also got an on again/off again band called Spot, which makes
a for a little confusion. At the Poison 13/Motards show in Austin in
November he played a solo banjo set in the middle. It was fun, and I think
he had a record come out somewhat recently that sounded much like what he

Hi y'all,

End of another month... What did musicians do in the past, to celebrate
that?

On January 31, in

1956, Elvis Presley recorded "I'm gonna sit right down and cry (over you)"
and "Tutti frutti" at New York's RCA Studios;
1957, Chuck Willis recorded "CC rider", in New York;
1966, the Beach Boys recorded "Caroline no" at Los Angeles' Western
Studios;
1969, the Beatles recorded "Let it be" and "The long and winding road" at
London's Apple Studios;
1969, the Sandpebbles recorded "The garden of Eden" at New York's Bell
Sound Studios;
1979, Joy Division recorded a BBC Peel session, playing "Exercise one",
"Insight", "She's lost control" and "Transmission";
1989, the Dream Syndicate played a gig at Raji's in Los Angeles. 75 minutes
of this gig are to be found on their cd "Live at Raji's".

That's it, happy birthday!

L8er,
Jan (Tragically Hip's "Fully completely" now playing)

I knew Del thru his manager, Dan Bourgoise, who worked with me at United
Artists in 1973 before I left to start Bomp Records, and he left to start
Bug Music, now one of the biggest indie music publishers. Dan and Del were
old friends from Michigan. Bug has since reissued, or arranged for the
reissue of, most of Del's material. The UK album, entitled "Home and Away"
was recorded for Immediate and never issued. It's really great stuff. My
favorite track is, for me, the best of the many versions of "Life is But
Nothing". I have the album on an acetate somewhere, haven't heard it in
years. Dan tells me he's been speaking recently to Andrew about releasing
it, hopefully soon. (Actually I have some dim recollection of the album, or
parts of it, being released on vinyl at some point in the 70s or 80s... I'm
probably wrong tho. I usually am, when I rely on memory!)

Del was also very close with Jeff Lynne (probably thru the UA connection
again; part of my job there was doing the press and advertising for the
Move/early ELO records), and Del was to have been in the Travelling
Wilburys, just about the time he died I believe.

Hope this helps,

Greg
